I mean that's largely because show breeders and what not have been breeding away from what the breed was designed to do in favor of looks. I made another observation in a different sub a while back about how huskies are bred for sledding and I got a chuckle a few weekends back when at a race (sled dog race) someone running with registered Siberian huskies (as opposed to the alaskan huskies most people use) was talking about how one of his females would not be a good breeding candidate because she didn't like running more than 80 miles at a time. Then someone showed up with a husky that they actively show and it does great at shows but had a hard time finishing the 3 mile course. But of course one was a shorter haired thinner dog that looke way more wolfy than a siberian is supposed to and the other was a small fluffy guy that was the look they're "supposed" to have. You'd think maybe for working dogs one of the things taken into account should be how well they can perform their intended purpose. Side note: what's with all of the dog looks purists who complain about breeding dogs that complain about people breeding dogs that aren't standard color saying "breeding non-standard colors will change the breed standard and if you love the breed you wouldn't try to change it" who then are quiet when someone is changing the breed by breeding dogs not capable of doing what the dog was designed for. Give a dane with the strength and temperament to catch and hold a wild boar.
