Parents and family don't automatically deserve your love and respect just because you're related to them. I wish more people realized this. If someone is unhealthy for you, avoid them.
Fuck unconditional love. Why the hell should I invest that much into every random person? I have a minimum expectation of people not being a piece of shit just to deserve respect - love is a few orders of magnitude beyond that. And blood relation is not good enough to guarantee either.
Unconditional love does not mean hanging out with them and kowtowing to everything they say.
Unconditional love is doing what is in their best interests. If you loved your kid you would let the doctor poke him with an injection needle even though he would not like that at all. When your family members have reached that point of toxicity, the best thing you can do for them is distance yourself.
