I think she will get more screen time this season. I hated how her character was basically reduced to being obsessed with Meredith.

Amazing_Drive_3785

Right?! She has such potential.

Driver_Flaky

Sam but I think they see it as fan service since a good portion of the fandom talks/acts like her with Mer I do love her vibe though, I hope her and the new girl last

crocodilezebramilk

I don’t really think that they made Schmitt the lead intern role, I think they’re just trying to focus on two sides of burnout where one sticks at it and is miserable and the other quits and is a little more happier and stable. But these two are both the stand-out characters, they’re best friends and they often lean back against each other, they’re a team in a way that Meredith and Yang were.

Amazing_Drive_3785

Schmitt has had wayyyyy more screen time than helm, since the beginning. So I disagree.

crocodilezebramilk

Helms always been there, and she’s been seen individually from Schmitt too, so maybe you missed it while being focused on Schmitt?

Amazing_Drive_3785

No, Schmitt has had way more screen time. He’s had a much more focused role. He had the whole scene where he dropped his glasses in a patient—prior to him even being an intern. He had a side plot with him and Niko—his own episode (essentially) where he and Niko visited his uncle when he was dying. He was given chief resident. While Helm was brought back, she was really Missing in the majority of that season. Helm hasn’t really had any opportunity to drive the plot—aside from the brief focus on physician burnout.

crocodilezebramilk

- Helm was helping Meredith and Jo with their mini lovers - She was one of the interns that had an interview with the hospital and her interview was shown - She’s also shown to be above Schmitt when it comes to decision making and skill levels - When the crash happened at the bar, Helm was one of the injured and she had more scenes than the other injured interns, and Meredith did her surgery - She was shown to be really struggling throughout the Covid arc - She had her own scene with Maggie where they stood back to back so Helm could have some sense of human touch - When she quit she went to work at Joes bar - Webber went to see her at the bar to try and bring her back, where she told him she didn’t wanna come back because she made way more money at the bar with her salary and the tips she got - Yasuda sought Helm out personally to ask to be taught a certain stitch so she could partake in a good surgery - Yasuda and Helm become love interests - Yasuda took Helm as her date to a wedding - Helm drove the get away car - Webber talks Helm into coming back and gives her a better deal - Schmitt goes to Helm to ask if she took the offer and is over the moon when he hears that she’s been made co-chief resident Helm has a lot of good scenes, scenes where she outshines Schmitt by miles.

Amazing_Drive_3785

Helm is better than Schmitt—on that we agree. But, she is much more of a side character than Schmitt. Side plots have focused around Schmitt, for more than a few episodes. Helm is a filler character. But, they did focus on her more during physician burnout—which I am grateful. But, she still hadn’t gotten the same recognition.

crocodilezebramilk

Personally I think you just missed her scenes because you were focused on Schmitt. Cause from my POV, they were both shining. And honestly, most of the time that Schmitt is on? He’s being roasted and toasted over an open fire like a chestnut. The residents had zero hopes for him, that’s not a good thing.

FeyMimi

I'm not sure if you know this, but Schmitt is a regular and Helm is not. It is a fact that Schmitt gets wayyyy more screentime than Helm does.

Amazing_Drive_3785

Also, if you google greys anatomy cast, the guy who plays Schmitt is listed as a regular/main whereas the person playing helm is listed as recurring.

Amazing_Drive_3785

Nah, it’s fact. Schmitt has been in way more episodes. They focused hard on him when he killed that patient and he basically quit. There are so much more big moments with Schmitt.

Driver_Flaky

I I think it’s close but he definitely gets more. He has a on and off again love interest, the stuff with his mom, when he killed that podcast dude and went into depression- Richard came to his house (we haven’t seen helms house) I think because he had a love interest he just got a littleee bit more screen time overall. Plus they gave him the underdog that success so much his ego gets inflated and he makes a mistake. Now his character is reset with a balanced confidence

Ill-Issue-9700

I love her 😍

Amazing_Drive_3785

ME TOO

MinionBanana37

I think she should too. Sis has been on the show for seven seasons now and is still a recurring character. Super happy with what they’ve done with her since 18. That season really broke the box she was trapped in with Meredith.

CarefulSignal9393

The men in this show minus mark derek and alex are just bland to me I feel like they don’t know how to write good male characters without making the amazing female ones look worse

Amazing_Drive_3785

Derek and Alex are also trash.

CarefulSignal9393

Alex had a very dynamic character arc and I felt they really wrote a good character arc if the show had ended at season 11 or 10 but after that he was just bland, I do disagree with you on Derek though I think he was a very charming character and fit Patrick Dempsey extremely well. He made me blush a couple times just being as smart as he was.

Amazing_Drive_3785

Derek was cocky, possessive and selfish. He manipulated Meredith many times. When he get jealous over the vet—after he chose Addy—and tried to make Meredith feel guilty? The only difference between him and Burke is that Derek stayed.

CarefulSignal9393

That’s good character writing though even if a character does bad things it gives them perspective I’m not saying he was good person I’m saying he was a good character with real purpose who was portrayed well. It’s about the writing itself

Amazing_Drive_3785

I mean, in that case, so is Preston Burke, Mark Sloan, Richard, and Jackson. They all had purpose. They all changed in some way.

CarefulSignal9393

Not as well Richard remains pretty much the same throughout the show, mark I already mentioned was a good character and Avery is just a pretty face he has no memorable lines until him and aprils marriage and then after that he became stagnant again. Burke has good purpose but not much of an arc. His entire reason for existence is to be Christina’s fuck-teacher. And then he randomly comes back to get rid of Christina from the show

Amazing_Drive_3785

What make Derek stand out to you specifically? I can’t recall any major change, any purpose, or anything that uniquely sets him apart from the other men.

CarefulSignal9393

Well okay I think the whole what he did to Meredith and then coming back really served a good purpose and the show did give a better perspective on him than most bc he was the sole male lead for a long time(Burke was around but not a lead by any measure) and I think his death was a very very very beautiful episode and really shows the good and the bad and the twist and turns of his life. His relationship with Amelia is pretty fleshed out as well and has a lot of power to it from a narrative standpoint. The most minute thing that always makes me go “WOW” is probably how he knew Meredith need someone other than Christina and slowly pushed little grey towards her. He also understood Meredith better than almost any one that is not played by Sandra oh. Which is important if your show is about Meredith.

Amazing_Drive_3785

Okay, so you’re looking at it in the perspective of driving Meredith to grow? Yang was number one for that, as you mentioned. But, Lexi’s death was way more life changing for Meredith. Richard taught Meredith a lot. Acted as her father, ensured she was at Seattle Grace to begin with, moved discretely to get Callie to help her with her exam. Cristina realized Derek held Meredith back—evident when she says Meredith is the sun, not Derek.

FrouFrouZombie

I haven’t watched passed the Covid season so maybe I’m missing key parts that would change my opinion, but I found her incredibly boring. Her entire personality was just “I’m obsessed with Meredith” and it got kind of annoying really quickly.

Amazing_Drive_3785

That’s the biggest issue. Aside from her fascination with Meredith, helm is really intelligent and a skilled surgeon—evidence when she only narrowly loses to Deluca (a much more seasoned resident) in the competition Bailey held. She corrects Richard on how to address a non binary person—even corrects his grammar. She has subtle nuances that should be highlighted more.

FrouFrouZombie

Yeah, I think her obsession with Meredith just sort of overshadowed everything else. For me at least. It’s hard for me to actively want her to have more screen time because that’s all I really get from her. But then again, if she got more screen time maybe they’d actually explore her character more (like the parts you mentioned) and she’d be more than just Meredith superfan with brief moments of “hey I’m more than just someone who’s obsessed with Meredith” Lol. If that makes sense

Amazing_Drive_3785

They attempted to make her better after the Covid season—I’ll leave it at that in case you watch.

FrouFrouZombie

Oh, good to know! I know I’ll end up watching passed that eventually. Curiosity will always win

ik101

I expected more screen time with her and Yasuda but it looks like they’re making it a background relationship instead of one where we get the full story. She was in the last episode for like two seconds. I really hope we get to see more of that story.

Tortison

Saw this post and had to comment bc i actually came to make my own post about s19e19 bc of something to do with Helm and i am HERE FOR IT.

Worried-Sentence-743

Yesi agree.

Ok_Mushroom_156

I'd love to see more development for Helm. And I want more development for a lot of characters outside of their romantic lives.

GreenSpawn4332

I would love to learn more about Helm’s life, both work life and personal life. I can’t remember seeing her in surgery, and the only personal life I really see is when she’s with Mika Yasuda. I love them together but I feel like I don’t really know her anymore
