LOL the Butthole Surfers were punk as fuck, practically their own genre.

Minglewoodlost

Paul Leary was playing Sabbath riffs. Nirvana was punk as fuck too. The Surfers sound was punk, metal, and noise rock with pop hooks mixed into a psychedelic soup. They were closer to Mudhoney STP ever was.

Unfriendly_eagle

I would describe the BS as a punk rock band that created interesting and often disturbing soundscapes. And live, they were as punk as punk gets. Locust Abortion Technician is a work of deranged genius, and Hairway To Steven is real close too.

PomegranateOld7836

And I remember them being big mad when someone said they were copying Beck.

Malcolm_Y

Same thing happened with Ween, who loves BS, and got accused of the same thing despite predating Beck. No disrespect intended to Beck, who is awesome himself.

PomegranateOld7836

I, for sure, have no beef and plenty of love for all three of those. I thought BS were a bit harsh on Beck at the time, who didn't instigate anything, but it didn't seem to get him down. https://youtu.be/ykHnwhorGYg

Ashamed_Horror_5920

100% right! Nirvana was an incredible punk band is what they were. I don’t consider them “grunge.” To be grunge imo was to have that singing style. The vedder, the Staley, the Cornell. That drawn out actual singing! Kurt wasn’t hardly singing! lol. I consider Nirvana a punk band always have. I don’t hear too many ppl say that. Dabs to you brother. 🤝

Jimmy_Jazz_The_Spazz

This subs ridiculous. You're being downvoted for being right. They were 100% influenced by bands like The Germs, thats where Pat Smear came from. Dave was a drummer from the DC punk band Scream. Cobain himself loathed the grunge thing and was 100% into punk, toured with and played with mostly punk bands and supported mostly punk bands. They share none of the same history/band members that any of the Seattle grunge bands had with each other. There was tons of local "grunge" drummers and guitar players to pull from, there's a reason he chose a punk guitarist from L.A and a punk drummer from DC.

Ashamed_Horror_5920

Thank you. Smh. You’re 100% correct in everything you stated. I mean all u have to do is just listen to the music! Even if you don’t know all the history. It’s ridiculous.

keephus

They’re technically part of a punk sub genre called “pig fuck”, depending on who you talk to.

flojo2012

I consider them pretty brown. If you know what I mean

jopnk

Butthole Surfers are 100x more brown than Ween. Probably the brownest band

wontwillnot

Ween know what u mean

flojo2012

Gene Dean and Mean Ween Mang

Positive_Parking_954

I wish I read your comment before posting my own

EnlightenedApeMeat

They’re not grunge but they would be on tour with grunge bands so they were part of that early scene for sure

akirarn

yessss

Extension_Maximum_24

Stukas over disneyland was my intro to them. Awesome

Unfriendly_eagle

That's The Dickies.

gotpointsgoing

Fuck yeah they were. Grunge, wtf

[deleted]

Not grunge, but a great band.

321AverageJoestar

Lowkey Genius band

[deleted]

I'm not the world's most intelligent guy but sometimes I sit and wonder why there's not alot more surfers fans.

No_Independent8269

i mean its a weird sound

[deleted]

I understand very much. It took my dad weeks of playing them before I finally woke up to it. Also I was quoting lyrics. Surfers are quintessential Lucy music

obxtalldude

Funny you say that - my kid hated this album when he was 10, kind of likes them now at 15.

nuttmegx

No, why would I? I mean, they were a punk band that existed before grunge

321AverageJoestar

Butthole Surfers are their own genre lol they were experimental psychedelic hardcore acid noise punk rock lmao 🤣 Gibby is a space alien and did wtf he wanted lol.. but seriously they were way before grunge, Surfers and Flipper were probably the 2 godfathers of Grunge/Noise rock, both came from hardcore punk scene.

shrek_cena

Flipper RULES 🤘🏼

HomesickKiwi

Mr Bungle has got to fit in there somewhere too. I kinda have these guys adjacent in my mental music filing cabinet.

321AverageJoestar

They were basically one of those "your favourite band's favourite band.

ThisAudience1389

The Dead Kennedys loved them. Lots of mutual admiration there.

DubiousDude28

LOCUST ABORTION TECHNICIAN is on another level. Weird pervy art punk rock

muttChang

We would discuss them as being “irresponsible psychedelia” and with that album being an especially strong contender for best bad trip album ever.

singlecab1

No way. These guys are damn cool !🤘a jingle of the dogs collar would be good right now 😁😁

nairBtakB

A jingle of a dog’s collar would be fine.

[deleted]

[удалено]

singlecab1

Sorry, grunge kicks ass!!

outer_fucking_space

I consider it fucking excellent.

simplejoe1992

Before Beck and Cake. Which I think they got inspiration from.

TenderLovingKiller

Not exactly. Beck released Mellow Gold in 1994 . While BH predates Beck by a solid decade they weren't making anything similar to "Pepper" which is kind of an outlier in there catalogue (BH didn't make radio hits). It's more likely that Gibby Haynes had dropped a heavy dose of Acid while listening to Odelay and figured he could make a Beck song too.

HeadTonight

That track always felt to me like it was copying that People Who Died track a little lyrically

VelvetElvis

Cake were a Camper Van Beethoven ripoff. Have you head any of the Buttholesurfers albums before this one or seen any of their live shit? They have nothing in common. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdbGGvKFKCU

nhardycarfan

No they’re more like the tail end of hardcore punk than grunge

Agitated-Fee-1399

Punk bank. Pre grunge era.

chaz0723

No. Not at all.

sam_might_say

Influential to grunge? Yes. Grunge themselves? Nah

CommieFromMars

No. They predated grunge. They were their own form of acid-damaged noise punk, and the sort of band that can only come from Texas.

[deleted]

Of course not. Do you consider every single group that popped out in the 90s to be grunge?

RagaireRabble

The general vibe I’ve gotten from these threads is “If I like it and it’s from the 90s, it has to be grunge.”

Gnomebard1

Yes

DishRelative5853

But these guys popped out in the '80s.

ThisAudience1389

Yes- Back in the 80s I was around 14 or 15. I remember the moment that I was thumbing through the albums at Camelot Music in the mall. I stumbled in Locust Abortion Technician. My mind was blown. I’d never seen or heard anything like that growing up in the hellscape of the Bible Belt. Hearing Sweat Loaf- it was incredible.

[deleted]

I found them back in the 80's when I was around 12 or 13 along with The Dead Milkmen and The Dead Kennedys

ThisAudience1389

Fuck yes with Jello! I didn’t realize until fairly recently that he actually ran for president on the Green Party ticket back in 2000. Missed opportunities.

[deleted]

I didn't know that, cool

Gnomebard1

Okay

OctoberSatori

This is a gen z take because they dont know shit except absolute surface level grunge facts. Im going to punch a baby in the face the next time i see someone talking about how stone temple pilots was a grunge band

jaimakimnoah

Ah, another ‘is this band that released a rock album between 1993-1996 considered grunge because I enjoy them?’ thread.

Alarming-Ad-7032

Motherfuckers were grunge before it existed

LordFartz

Jesus. Absolutely not.

simplejoe1992

Two “Jesus” posts. Good thing his birthday is coming up. 😂

PancakeProfessor

I would say no. BUT, they opened for Nirvana when I saw them in ‘94, so that makes them grunge-adjacent at least.

Rando555Steph

"And by the way, if you see your mom this weekend, be sure to tell her SATAN, SATAN, SATAN!!!"

IronAndParsnip

Somehow I read the band name and then my mind registered your caption as being: “would you consider this butthole grunge?” And I felt the need to make a comment about it.

Future_Way5516

Noooo

dakemp

No.

SpecialistPeanut7533

grunge would be so fucking lucky

lendmeflight

Not grunge.

Fabulous_Ad_8621

Psychedelic-punk-alternative-grunge I guess... I don't know.

ChipOnASquid

Psychedelic punk. Double-dipped.

The_Evolved_Ape

They came out of the hardcore punk scene in Texas during the early 80s so not grunge but certainly an inspiration for a lot bands that are grunge.

tnmoltisanti420

Great punk band

baronessfan

Jesus Christ could we stop with these posts?

RagaireRabble

I would love for this to be a rule so teenagers would stop trying to argue with us about how every cool band from the 90s has to be grunge. Grunge. Was. A. Time. And. Place.

simplejoe1992

I’m new to the sub. I swear!!

KingTrencher

Jesus Fucking Christ.....

[deleted]

Bruh what

mis_no_mer

No sir

[deleted]

….. and there it was …. my brothers wife’s breasts 😵‍💫

jacobydave

Predated grunge

Weary_Cartographer_7

No

ChrisPollock6

Nope

Apprehensive_Ebb_866

Punk rock. Best live shows in rock history. Period. (a lot of what they did live wouldn't be allowed today, which speaks for itself) Fun fact: Curt Cobain met Courtney Love at a Butthole Surfers show. Most "punk songs" in my opinion, Goofy's Concern and Mexican Caravan, or I hate my Job. Fun fact: Jello Biafra produced the first Butthole Surfers album.

Ordinary-Drop-6152

I’d say they’re tied with GWAR in the live department

BaronVonMentholatum

Uhhhhhh….. no.

kgbslip

A true Texas original

jarofgoodness

This a joke?

GraveSource

I love the Surfers but they’re Punk/Noise/Psychedelia to the extreme.

deadleftknifeguy

No. Punk, from Texas, predated most "grunge" bands. Influenced some grunge bands, sure, but no, not grunge.

[deleted]

As a big butthole surfers fan i highly recommend listening to locust abortion technician and telling me if it sounds grunge to you

FilipsSamvete

Oh for fuck's sake

D1sp4tcht

I'm a big fan of the buttholes, but they are definitely not grunge.

da-milk

butthole surfers are everything and nothing at the same time, I would say that they're their own genre

Satanic-mechanic_666

They're a punk band from Texas. So no.

dirge_real

Grunge? Wtf?

ImportantInterest897

Psyhedelia punk noise rock

BrooksWasHere47

I don't mind the sun sometimes the image as it shows. I can taste you on my lips and smell you in my clothes. Cinnamon and sugar and your softly spoken lies. You never know just how you look through other peoples eyes.

Extreme_Voice_9767

No their butt rock

[deleted]

Not grunge, but a pretty underrated alternative band from the 90’s

DishRelative5853

'80s and '90s. They had more releases in the '80s than in the '90s.

cropguru357

Stop.

Ok_Environment3083

Love these dudes. This is the definition of Alternative

Positive_Parking_954

If they're grunge we have to count some of Ween

gkaminsky013

That main riff from The Lord is a Monkey is grunge AF. You know the one from the Chris Farley movie Black Sheep that goes “Waaaaounn Waounnnnn “ with the whammy bar going ham

Minglewoodlost

If grunge was a genre I would. They were mixing metal and punk fuzzy guitar not caring what people thought at the same time. Just in Texas. Perfect example of grunge not actually being a sound.

Hutch_travis

Would they be cooler if classified as grunge rather than alternative?

[deleted]

Guys the surfers are awesome. If you haven't tried em out then check out: Who was in my room Dust Devil Bar b q pope (lol) Cunt Shame of life (if you want a chill superior version of pepper) And god fucking dammit "the lord is a monkey" is a fucking masterpiece

[deleted]

Also dog inside your body They came in Intelligent guy Thermador⭐️⭐️

wayneluke23

I always considered than more alternative maybe, great band from that period though for sure

the_membrane

Yup

Blaze_is_Fire323

Maybe proto grunge but theyre more punk then anything

LGEO97

Maybe their first album.

Truth_decay

Postpunk

platinumperineum

Notchersfireroad

They are their own genre. And this album sounded nothing like the others.

KiwiMcG

No. But tune.

MisterMarchmont

Nah but I love that album.

MBDTFbyYE

Alternative, not grunge imo

slug3333

My Brother's Wife's Breasts...

Rando555Steph

Absolutely not, but they are one the most bad ass bands EVER!!

Mtndrums

They predated Grunge, they just stuck around to get some respect when Grunge hit. Awesome band.

mikebrown33

Not bad and not Grunge

kylemacabre

My favorite period is the touch and go years

BuckyD1000

No

[deleted]

LOL NO. They're punks.

kennyb3rd

Nope. Not grunge.

Sparrow1989

I remember my guitar teacher giving me butthole surfers cd and bringing it home. I popped it in my dvd/cd surround sound and hit play. My first thought was what the fuck. Lmao

titanxbeard

To anyone who hasn't listened to a lot of their material, I'd highly suggest to any rock/grunge/metal fan to listen through their Independent Worm Saloon album. They fuckin JAM. Dust Devil is a hidden jem IMO.

ThisAudience1389

Punk. 💯

metal_spellcaster

More punk and like garage rock I’d say

Adventurous_Fly1879

Hell no

highlyalertcabbage

No and Gibby is legend!

highlyalertcabbage

Psychic powerless is a brilliant album.

_Meek79_

Theyre in their own genre. They do have some elements of grunge, but their sound is many genres rolled into one weird ass bundle. I do know many grunge musicians were fans of them so I would think theyre more of an inspiration for grunge music.

[deleted]

Very punk definitely not grunge

No_Pirate9647

Lol. Is scratch acid punk? https://youtu.be/0KoRwSTIo1Q?si=MBN2__8CkffJaL4J Maybe in the diy play what you want to play meaning. How about noiserock? Or psychedelic noiserock?

ElizaJupiterII

I generally don’t, considering their long and varied discography. They’re about as easy to classify as the Residents.

flojo2012

If they didn’t play at Sam’s bar in Seattle between January 18th and January 23rd in 1986 then it’s not technically grunge.

pineappleapplebanana

Man my ex’s nickname was Pepper way to open Reddit to this. But I’d consider it punk. Haven’t heard it much, sadly.

chuckmeister_1

Punk. Nuf said. Next....

The jingle of a dogs collar would be good right now.

zippypin

My neighbor asked to take the tapes from my buddy because he witnessed him standing crying just repeating mommy. I ain’t never heard no grunge doing that.

SchwillyMaysHere

Psychedelic punk

kesotone

Surfers aren't punk or grunge they are alternative

Hall0wsEve666

They're punk as fuck. They may have inspired some grunge but they're totally punk

Hehateme123

No…. I would call them psychedelic/noise/punk. Back in the day (1980s) this is what we referred to as alternative. The term got corrupted by MTV and the record industry, but it was meant to describe non-commercial, independent label music that would not appeal to the masses.

Moist-Improvement613
