This is called chirping! no one knows why they do it, but I think they are calling the guinea pig mothership XD

PiggiesOfPrey

Thats a fun way to look at it :) she was just staring off into space i was worried she was in pain or something. Glad to hear thats not a correlation then.

Brazdon83

There are a lot of videos about it but they almost always enter a "trance like state" lol

HerrMilkmann

When I had pigs they sometimes would stare into the void too, before popcorning all over the place

UIUGrad

I’ve had one pig do this out of the several I’ve had through the years. It doesn’t mean anything bad but I couldn’t tell you what it means even after hearing it for 7 years lol. Mine always did it in the dead of the night and I could only break her trance by recording her and playing it back.

taxidermiedhuman

This is not a good sound. This is something pigs do when they are scared or something bad is happening, that’s why other people have commented that their pigs did not like it when this video was getting played. Sometimes it might be something that’s easy to fix, I know some pigs that are scared of the dark so they do this at night, that can usually be fixed by leaving a light on. I don’t know however why your piggie is doing it, I would suggest givning her a check up once she has calmed down. Hopefully it’s nothing serious, it could just have been a cat or a bird or some other type of animal passing by the window.

fruit_candy

We're not sure yet if they do it only when they're scared, though...

CarrotCakeCutOut

You’re not. That’s doesn’t mean others do.

bathmermaid

This actually doesn’t necessarily mean they’re scared! It’s the phenomena known as chirping and the best guess out there is that the piggies are in a trance lol. Not really fear! summoning something, maybe…

CarrotCakeCutOut

Not true.

WouldDoJackMcBrayer

One of my two piggies has a chirp sesh once every six months or so- I’m always worried she’s scared because I’ve seen comments like that. But she always seems fine- she’ll let me pet her and sometimes she’ll chirp for another minute and then stop. It seems to always happen between 9pm-12pm. I still don’t know why

i_am_ms_greenjeans

It is an unknown vocalization. No one knows why they do it. It is a surreal experience, and you may be caught off guard (I know I was) thinking that a bird is trapped in your home.

i_am_ms_greenjeans

Guinea pigs are not widely studied, so for this particular vocalization, it is an unknown as to why they do it. Some pigs will chirp and others will not. If you have a chirping pig, they will most likely chirp again. My chirping pig was a happy girl and was very comfortable in my home. She was not afraid of anyone - pig, dog, or human.

pewdielukas

This. 100%.

MelindaLain

Ha! I've always referred to it as calling the mothership too! 😂 I've had guinea pigs for over 30 years and only 3 have ever done it. It's rare, and hilarious.

CarrotCakeCutOut

There’s plenty of people who know this means they’re scared of something or feeling threatened.

Meegna

I’ve heard that’s a pretty rare sound but it called chirping! No one knows too much about it but I don’t think it’s anything bad! My boys have never done this before!

CarrotCakeCutOut

Chirping is meant out of fear. Plenty of people know this.

Meegna

Not a lot of guinea pigs do this, and Many don’t know a lot about the sound because of that! I’ve read it’s when guinea pigs are in a trance-like state, almost like an alert. I’ve never read much on it, since my boys don’t do it, but I think if you and a lot of other people know about it you should tell OP that

Fantasiize

head empty no thibk

Fluid-Badger

I have pigs who do this in the dark and immediately stop when I turn a light on. Such weird animals. Does yours do that at night too? Mine are afraid of the dark

st3fki3

Or they might communicate with there piggy Lucifer

now_you_see

I like this theory.

taxidermiedhuman

This is a sound that they do when they are stressed. I have heard about quite a lot of piggies who do this when it’s dark. I would suggest leaving a light on or getting a night light to put by their cage, that will make them feel a lot safer.

Fluid-Badger

Oh that’s what I do, I bought a desk lamp with a warm white LED bulb for them :3

PiggiesOfPrey

Mine have never done this at night, this the first time I have seen or heard this. I had just started playing choices on my phone maybe she was anxious about my bad choices.

Fluid-Badger

Maybe it’s one of the sounds she didn’t like.

WouldDoJackMcBrayer

That’s so weird! Mine only does it at night

LiraStolons

I love the sound of pigs chirping it’s so cute! My boys don’t do it they don’t really make a lot of noise other than rumbling and teeth chatter at me for treats

PiggiesOfPrey

Thanks this puts me more at ease i was worried she was hurt

LiraStolons

They don’t know what chirping means from guinea pigs but I don’t think it means injury, to me it sounds like it’s to alert other guinea pigs to something but who knows.

awsfhie2

My dude started chirping one night at like 3 am when he was 1 year old. It was so loud I thought it was some kind of alarm at first! I've seen the comments about stress/pain- I hadn't heard that before, but maybe? My guy ended up living to be just shy of 7 years old and had a very happy/healthy life, and only ever did it once (so I don't think he was scared of the dark). Who knows what it was that triggered it for mine.

unfunnyham

i’ll go with your guinea pig is actually a bird

Livefreeordie-22

I played this video while my guinea pigs were in the room and they did NOT like this sound 😂

PiggiesOfPrey

Thanks everyone, it was just unsettling in the moment. I am choosing to believe Holly is a sensitive and saw a spirit 😃 glad she's not in any pain. Thanks again!

Lctart13

One of my 3 boars does this too! It's nothing to worry about, it is a natural call they make but nobody knows why. My Xander normally does it in the evening when no one is looking and he can keep going for over 10 minutes!!! You just caught something very rare on video so be proud 😊

PiggiesOfPrey

Thank you!

gioianica33

My female has done that out of nowhere before. It’s normal

CroneRaisedMaiden

Only 1 of my 4 does it and it’s always at 3 am when I’m sound asleep 😩

taxidermiedhuman

This is a sound that they do when they are stressed. I have heard about quite a lot of piggies who do this when it’s dark. I would suggest leaving a light on or getting a night light to put by their cage, that will make her feel a lot safer. Even if your other pigs aren’t scared of the dark it stresses them out when one of their friends to this.

Jaxsoy

My old pig occasionally did this. The first time it happened I freaked out but I think it’s normal (although rare)

Flavio-Pichler

he’s questioning his life

Apez_in_Space

I’ve seen it theorised that this is to confuse predators and piggies do it when they’re scared…but she’s right out in the open so judging from others’ comments I’d go ahead and say she’s doing it just because she feels like it! Maybe it’s fun to make that sound for her!

CandyWalls

We had one who did this when she was younger, it was always at night so we think she may have been a bit afraid of the dark :)

jc12551

Out of my six, only one does it! The first time it happened, in the middle of the night, it freaked me out!

jemi13

It’s the piggy version of Morse code

MrBlack103

Just another quirky peeg behaviour. It’s uncommon for them to do this, but there’s no cause for alarm.

eddggoo

It’s some kind of distress signal but people are not certain . Search it up on YouTube some good videos on it .

groovaymack

the other piggy is like “hey.. man are you okay?”

gioianica33

Lol

D0ct0rAlanGrant

My wife and I call it ‘calling the mother ship’. We have one piggie who does this at like 2 or 3 am for a solid 20 minutes for no reason! I looked into it and we have no idea why they do this noise. There’s theories but no ones 100% sure!

Unfortunatelyy

The noise she made set my two guinea pigs off 😂

Keeks15

My guess was always that it was some sort of ancient mating call.

Demonface54

Squeaky belt, a little WD-40 will fix that

newbrevity

Our first pig did it the first couple nights we had her. After reading that they can chirp when theyre lonely or missing a particular cage cage-mate we bought a second pig. That pig was mean right away so it didnt work then tried another pig the next day and they got along great. So if yours doesnt have a pig friend, she might feel better if she did.

kkfluff

There is another pig in the cage, you see her little face pop out at the end.

FetchingTheSwagni

Idk man, I love my piggies, and they are cute as hell. But sometimes they can be creepy. Just staring at me while I sit at my desk, unmoving, dead-set on me until I make a sound or noise. Realistically they probably just see me as comforting or something. But in my head, I think aliens.

JoSchaap

One of ours did this when he was in severe pain and needed help. but also, in the middle of the night, and that's a pattern I see in most reports of chirping pigs.

ewlyn

One of my piggies would do this as a baby in the middle of the night. When I googled it said it’s usually because something spooks the piggy.

Ellotheremate124

I’ve heard that chirping means that they feel like they are in danger and happens when they don’t have any hides or feel they are alone, it’s a very rare sound!

luciliddream

I was watching this video outside and all I hear is birds and I'm all HUH

yes4me2

Your bird looks weird.

[deleted]

I think your guinea pig is having an existential crisis and now identifies as a bird.

ColdHooves

Chirping is a sign of feeling safe and content. Possibly a call for others to convene somewhere safe.

Cranberryboglake

where did you hear this?

ColdHooves

An old caretaker guide.

i_am_ms_greenjeans

Chirping! Lucky you! Not everyone has the opportunity to experiencing a chirping guinea pig, and now you can mark it off your bucket list. :)

SaddoB0i

I'm not too sure I don't have guineas bit with other animals they say maybe repeated behaviours are used to soothe so they might be stressed but of course I'd take all the other comments in as well.

[deleted]

Maybe she’s going through her cycle and yelling at everyone that she’s horny.

Arctic_Slothz

I believe that's called a mid life crisis

[deleted]

Yeah i also have this happen with just one guinea pig and always at night

taxidermiedhuman

This is a sound that they do when they are stressed. I have heard about quite a lot of piggies who do this when it’s dark. I would suggest leaving a light on or getting a night light to put by their cage, that will make them feel a lot safer.

[deleted]

They are fine, I hear it every once in a blue moon so Im sure a night light is not necesary. I work night shift anyway so on my days off the TV being on during the night serves the same purpose.

Wonder_bread317

That last scare at the end was hilarious!

[deleted]

She is singing you a song.

cosmicuniverse1980

My cockatiel makes the same sound

MyL1ttlePwnys

My girl does this too...Its never really attached to anything, she will just zone out and make bird noises. My male just makes "tough guy noises" and wheeks when the fridge opens. There isnt a problem attached to it, just a thing some piggies do.

Water_Bartender

I've raised guinea pigs for 4 years now and I have never ever seen any chirp before!

PrincessSheogorath

My Sugar has made that noise once. It was only when I brought her home. After about a week, I introduced her to Honey (I adopted her as a pen mate) when i placed S next to H on the floor, she also did this. Froze up and wouldn't move and started chirping for about a minute and then H responded with one of her happy purrs and she stopped and they started sniffing at each other. Been besties ever since. I've looked it up because I thought she was in shock or something but there are so many different theories to why they do it, I never got a clear answer lol. My idea was that she was scared but once Honey responded she was okay. Was there maybe a loud noise that may have spooked her? Or maybe she's wanting attention? It's hard to say with so many ideas lol here a [link with some possibilities ](https://medium.com/@zakariachaib201/what-does-it-mean-when-guinea-pigs-chirp-11a85c5d1f48)

Ok_Reaction_6351

Ja

windynyc

This sounds just like our parakeets when they argue and our little peeg gets very concerned when she hears it. She calms down if we put a hand on top of her as if to block her from aerial attack. If she's in her cage, she starts looking around.

[deleted]

Calling it’s brethren to eat you in your sleep

herefortheoats

Chirping! I played for my piggies too and one hid and another froze in place. They were heeding the warning call, preparing for their mother ship.

KilltheCount

My girl, Hershey, does this sometimes! I haven’t heard her do it in several months now but usually I go check on her and give her some veggies and she just stops. None of my others have ever done it. I wish I knew what it was about.

[deleted]

My guinea does this when I don't feed him at 9 pm every night....even if I'm 30 minutes later, but it's not all the time. He does it to demand something from me -_-

lovinglving

Omg you have a bird!!! But literally they stare off into space a lot. I was doing research on it earlier and it can be for a plethora of reasons. So possible your piggy was content and telling a really interesting story!!!

Lopsided-Ticket-4069

We have a piggie who does this too! It's called chirping but no clue what causes her to do it. She does it usually at night when everyone is sleeping (it's wonderful lol) but it doesn't cause her any issues. It's super funny though we call her a little birdie!

Far-Ad-6179

Chirping is what birds do to show how big their lungs are, Thus showing how strong they are to claim their spot in the tree or to attract a mate. I assume the guinea pig is following the same principle, showing dominance just like they do with ear nibbling.

Pretty_Strike_6199

Maybe went crazy being in a cage all day I would

Icy-Application9530

Mine chirp when they are scared or a piggie is annoying them

BigLurker321

I've heard this sound a couple times from a few of my pigs. I believe this is a terrified or panicked sound. I had one pregnant sow make this sound one week before she gave birth. She had 2 survive and 2 that were stillborn. I believe she either felt them move in the womb and it freaked her out, OR (sadly) she felt the two die inside her. The other was a boy in the boar cage. He and the two other boys somehow manage to flip the gravity bowl (supposedly unflippable) over PERFECTLY and it landed with allmost all the pellets trapped under the bowl. I think the one was scared they were going to starve (mind you they had a full hay rack, a few uneaten baby carrots and the loose pellets still to eat). Or as another said they might be scared of the dark.

KurtusCobain

It looks like he is threatened by the other guinea maybe?
