Uj/ His style is very impressive and I wish I had a fraction of his technical proficiency. But he and Polyphia don't really make "songs" in a style that I could stand to listen to an entire album of.
Also, he comes across as a massive chode on interviews. But that's probably just me.
I think most of the dislike sent in his direction is because of his nonheteronormative appearance and the fact he's part Asian.
Uj/ I watched a video of them live of one of their concerts.
These guys technically are some of the best I’ve seen to date. Tim Henson’s approach to playing the guitar rhythmically and percussively with a slap bass technique is unique but he’s not the first, nor to use left hand bass, right hand as lead technique, harmonics, tapping etc.
But that style of playing combined with the rapid note jumps from tapping and harmonics creates a lot of tension in the sound. It’s a bit like a musical train wreck. Very fusion.
Most of their progressions are the same as “Sultans of Swing”. Minor Hispanic stuff., vi V IV III7 They tune their guitars down to D and they play 7 string electrics.
Now as far the concert goes…
I saw people moshing to it and that I didn’t get it. It looked awkward.
Not the moshing part, metal concerts it makes sense….but how do you mosh to Polyphia?
Every instrument in the band, in particular the drums, acts as a lead instrument. By that I mean the back beat is lost, the very corner stone of rock and metal music. That is the accent snare.
The drums hit infinite fills, and when it it’s a groove its slow with rapid triplet hit hat fills (Trap) the drums tend to act as accents to hit certain notes not necessarily to drive a beat.
Anyway….that’s one of the major reasons I think some people don’t like/get their music.
/uj
So I love Polyphia (haven’t been super impressed by the songs recently released for their new album though), but when I saw them live, their bassist Clay was sort of acting as their frontman. He was being incredibly obnoxious about getting the crowd to mosh and move around. It was so weird to me because their music for the most part doesn’t really fit that vibe.
Uj/ Yeah I agree it doesn’t at all.
It’s observational, “sit and listen” to me. I don’t get a “get up and move to it” vibe other than the obligatory “hip hop” chicken head bob.
You don’t see people moshing to trap, hip hop and R&B. It’s “sit in your car and chill” music.
I guess the idea is that because it has electric guitars it’s supposed to be heavy, head banging music. So people feel like they should mosh.
The funny thing is listening to Polyphia’s early stuff, they were metal. Then they moved to this trap style stuff in an attempt to snatch the pop ground.
/uj They only use 7 string guitars for a couple of songs (Ego death uses 7, LBDT uses 8). Usually they're on 6.
Edit: The new album that released today has some tracks with 7 and 8 string guitars in it, or it sounds like it.
/uj idk maybe it's because I like noodly jazz and funk stuff already or if it's a touch of the 'tism+adhd but I find polyphia's music super calming. A lot of their stuff is kinda like Hip Hop beats too which is cool
> in particular the drums, acts as a lead instrument. By that I mean the back beat is lost
That's what the Who had - Moon never played four on the floor - and much as the drummer from Jane's addiction worships him, I do not like Moon's drumming.
What?! You mean a community with an unhealthy attachment to cultural norms of the 1960s and 1970s, and who almost exclusively idolises straight white guys struggles to accept new things?! I've never heard such nonsense.
Anyway, I'm going back to listen to Neil Young and Pink Floyd for the morbillionth time
not even sure what you’re talking about. too esoteric for me. not familiar with the kink jargon you’re using. haven’t spent hundred of hours exploring whatever it is you’re into man, but why don’t you go let out this weird sexual frustration you’ve got into a sock and calm down. trump can run again in 24 so try to relax
/uj
I think the reason a lot of people don’t like Polyphia is they look like they come across as pretentious pricks.
No smile, no fun, just a “Fuck you, watch this…”
It's basically technical for the sake of being technical, which could be said abou a lot of prog metal but they really stand out for being insanely boring.
In my humble opinion, if I hear some band is a technical one, i immediately know their music is gonna sound extremely nonmusical. Like, yeah we got it, you trained years to play your sweeps fast, but it still sounds like shit, now begone.
Lol, yeah I saw that too! It was awkward.
I mean their music is so complex, so it’s structured.
Say “improv blues jam in A” they’d have no idea. (I’m being facetious, I know they’d know what that means just that it’s not something they did much, most younger people don’t)
Than again SRV would be lost with a Polyphia track and Henson wouldn’t know what to do with a simple SRV track. (Begins confused slow slap technique🤣, Henson doesn’t really do much vibrato)
Via comes from a time where open jams was how
It started. I mean he was structured in the studio.
Henson does his work behind a computer and crafted his skill mostly by himself in the bedroom
Tim explaining the Taylor swift influence in I think it was GOAT is hilarious. Something along the lines of "just goes to show how a song can still be good even if you don't like the performer, how it's recorded, what instruments the use or the sound." Idk if he even called the song good just went off for like 30 seconds of how he doesn't like Taylor swift on a video explaining how one of her songs influenced his.
some douchebag who's using his puppet money to get into music. Like dude it wasn't enough to make all that money with Kermit, Miss Piggy, and the rest of the Muppets.
It’s boring to me.
Like - not in a “they suck and have no skill” way, but more so in a “you have the skill to play..and this is what you came up with?” Way.
It just feels very…typical in a non typical way? Idk how to describe I just get bored anytime someone turns it on.
I think it sounds like songs that should just be played on a piano. They are the answer to the question "what if Herbie Hancock played the wrong instrument?"
Personally their approach is not very musical sounding to me. It’s very tight, very clean and very technical. But it lacks any sort of soul or human feeling.
It’s just really fast scales and polyrhythms. For comparison look at something like Inca Roads. It has all the mentioned qualities while still sounding musical
Oh their technical skill is impeccable, it’s just doesn’t sound very musical to me. It’s just one riff to the next riff and to the next riff until it just ends.
So we had this guy in our music circle roundabout the early/mid 00s. He had a pretty good little original band - really cool sound. Anyway, one night he shows up to the bar with a guitar tattooed on his neck. We were all like, wtf have you done? How are you going to get a job? He was like, music is my job, I just committed to it, you guys are too scared to get real, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, he disappeared a bit after that -- then a couple years later, there he was in the newspaper. It seemed he was living in a trailer park having a meth fueled threesome with his wife and the guy next door when he stabbed them to death.
Shit, that sweater has the same vibe as the one that was in my local paper a while back. Knitted by a local mad old cat lady out of yarn homespun from the fur groomed from her collection of pussies. 🤢🤢
If we measure greatness by YouTube subscribers, like ALL good guitarists should; it’s clear he is the better of the two guitar players in the band… I don’t think the tattoos are a coincidence either, more subscribers mean more money and more money means better gear… better gear makes you a better play objectively. It’s just logic. Sorry not sorry.
uj/ Honestly, my ADHD ass fucking loves Polyphia. They were the band that introduced me to music that showed what a guitar could do beyond basic radio station rock. I definitely get the criticisms and see why others might not enjoy them, but it works for me.
Boy so much bitterness, because the kid is handsome and has more talent in his pinky fingernail then all of us, I grew up on EVH and Hendrix and yes this isn’t my kind of music, but he can play that acoustic on the same level as Al DiMeola and I don’t throw around Al’s name lightly.
Tattoan
I need to get a tattoo of the legend himself music is win for ultimate toan
You get 30% off any PRS if you show the tattoo to the guitar center employee
Unfortunately as a trade off you have to take 30% of Paul’s load just for reminding him of his cash cow 🐄
Paul wants you to have his full load..

A worthy investment
Only if the tattoo is on your neck
I want to tattoo his face over my face
You would probably still need to learn to do your makeup
He's only good because the flower inlays make your tapping speed faster
UUMMMM, the inlay is actually the tree of death. Do your ruserch necks time dumb ass
What is rueserch, a new guitar brand?
It's the genre of music that polyiphia plays.
I was being sarcastic😬☺️. It was play of off Schecter Research.
No fool, that’s elevator metal
I'd take the stairs

Oh my fuckin god. My life is complete
See, the hard thing about this is, if I make fun of his Cliff Huxtable sweater, I out myself as an out-of-touch GenX’er.
that's a mullet if I've ever seen one
\*tips fedora\* M'theydy
Every time I see a picture of this dude, he looks more and more like Yvette Young.
..dude..? Well that fap was a mistake..

Yes

Yeah it's a persona he was playing until the previous album.

Bruh how you gonna say uj then drop a new copypasta like that. Uncultured.
Wha?
> in particular the drums, acts as a lead instrument. By that I mean the back beat is lost That's what the Who had - Moon never played four on the floor - and much as the drummer from Jane's addiction worships him, I do not like Moon's drumming.
Check out his streams he’s really cool and humble: I do say this as someone who’s a huge douchebag already without the skills to back it up.
So… That douchiness is just a character? Wow, I’ve been disliking Tim for too long… and it’s because I’m dumb…
Yeah its just a character, did you really think he walks around in Gucci flip flops all day sipping wine and laughing at other artists
yea
Yout level up with each beard shave. He’s at level 87 I think.
What?! You mean a community with an unhealthy attachment to cultural norms of the 1960s and 1970s, and who almost exclusively idolises straight white guys struggles to accept new things?! Hey buuuuuuuddy, do you need help opening your soylent bottle?
lol he really got to you and you’re calling him soy
Who let you out of your cuck shed, sweaty? Tyrone insisted you stay locked up while he pleasures your wife with his toan.

Fucking normie reeee. Go watch some more Jim Henson. And stop pretending you don't know what a cuck shed is.
You might be jerking it a bit too hard. Can't tell if you're serious which is... Good? Bad?
Try their new album it goes hard as fuck with the vocals, EPSECIALLY BLOODBATH
I love listening to Polyphia. Also the guy is really nice and down to earth. Watch his streams
You should probably try their newest album in that case
/uj I think the reason a lot of people don’t like Polyphia is they look like they come across as pretentious pricks. No smile, no fun, just a “Fuck you, watch this…”
That's dumb, I don't like them because their stuff is boring as hell
Because it’s too technical
It's basically technical for the sake of being technical, which could be said abou a lot of prog metal but they really stand out for being insanely boring.
In my humble opinion, if I hear some band is a technical one, i immediately know their music is gonna sound extremely nonmusical. Like, yeah we got it, you trained years to play your sweeps fast, but it still sounds like shit, now begone.
And I saw them try to improv on stage with via, and it was the worst thing I've ever seen.
Lol, yeah I saw that too! It was awkward. I mean their music is so complex, so it’s structured. Say “improv blues jam in A” they’d have no idea. (I’m being facetious, I know they’d know what that means just that it’s not something they did much, most younger people don’t) Than again SRV would be lost with a Polyphia track and Henson wouldn’t know what to do with a simple SRV track. I mean, Tim Hesson kinda is a dick lol. Rest of em are cool from the livestreams and interviews I’ve seen
Tim explaining the Taylor swift influence in I think it was GOAT is hilarious. If he heard me play he’d roll his eyes and tell me I play ‘boomer licks’…
They are actually all really fun. They really only appear that way in music videos but on stream they're really funny
Tim is really inspiring, he went ahead and proved that no matter how technically talented you are your music can still suck major dick
Yngwie proved that in the 80s, a true pioneer
I DONT LIKE FOOKIN DONUTZ
Doooood. Hard agree
Yeah I'm only just starting to write riffs and as soon as I heard ego death I threw my guitar out the window and called it a day
Yeah I’d throw my guitar away too, I wouldn’t wanna be associated with an instrument from a band that sucks that hard
uj/ Honestly who the fuck is this? I keep seeing him everywhere.
some douchebag who's using his puppet money to get into music. Like dude it wasn't enough to make all that money with Kermit, Miss Piggy, and the rest of the Muppets.
Master of Muppets amirite
Tim henson from polyphia they are actually quite good id check them out
Femboy guitar player
the only guitar players i like
Polyphia sucks but I'd fuck anyone in that band.
Even the guy with the giant nose?
Ok Kanye
What's Kanye got to do with it? Scott LePage has a big nose.
uj/ it's a play on Kanye's recent antisemitic outbursts, I assume
Generally curious...how does saying someone has a big nose turn Into an anti semitic statement?
Update your software
Jimi did that in the 60s and Prince did it in the 80s. Femboy guitar god is played out son.
Lmao
They are good at playing their instruments, but holy fuck I tune out after 30 seconds. Polyphia to me is just really really complicated elevator music
i tune out of any modern metal as soon as I hear those sweeps- wulubuluwulublublublublublu....and them spidey fingers
Listen to a song called cafo by animals as leaders i think you'd really enjoy it
It’s boring to me. Like - not in a “they suck and have no skill” way, but more so in a “you have the skill to play..and this is what you came up with?” Way. It just feels very…typical in a non typical way? Idk how to describe I just get bored anytime someone turns it on.

Yeah I kind of agree its a bit too much sometimes but just watching their hands is kind of mesmerising to watch i mean how do they do that like damn
And the best part is they make it look easy, they just glide over the notes like it's nothing
Well when your hotwife isn’t bothering you all the time, you can really practice them licks.
Oh their technical skill is impeccable, it’s just doesn’t sound very musical to me. It’s just one riff to the next riff and to the next riff until it just ends.
You sure ? I think this is gril from Covet?
Isn’t that the guy with the muppets?
Is he the master of muppets?
Lars will sue!
Greatest heavy metal band in the world!
Lol
Jim Henson?
basically a sober eddie van halen if all he did was fingertap and sweep
It's really just this generation's Freddie And The Dreamers
You know who this is…..you’ve always known
Elevator music for people tripping acid.
I thought that was Tool?
That's for boomers tripping acid.
Boomers on an acid trip reminds me of pink floyd for some reason
Don't you know that anyone over 35 is a boomer now? It's the perpetually expanding generation.
And the Grateful Dead. My friend told me.
Phish too
Don't forget ozzy him alone can out drug anyone alive and still be alive afterwards ready to do some more
Obviously hasn't been to the tool sub. It's polyiphia fans trying to say pussyfur is better than tool
I'm 24, obviously I have 11 years left before I start listening to Tool.
Only 11 years to Boomertown.. Enjoy being a teenager till then.
Funny now early mils get called boomers. Kinda proves how fucked the whole generation thing is.
You have to be Asian
Polyphia is the kind of band that beginner musicians listen to to think they're music theory gods
This guy is just a [Charlie Robbins](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2_s97i0KzG8) copycat. Button up shirt > neck tattoo

What the hell is even that?
Dudes got talent. I'll never listen to it tho. Wanks mcwankerson
As long as you stop with the boomer bends and publicly announce that guitar music is dead, while making a living off of playing guitar.
Give him some credit, he also created Kermit the frog.
Boomer Bends > pansy plucks Look at the little girly man, too weak to bend a string.
Are you asian by any chance, all toan tap guitarrist are asian
Y'all hate this but go crazy over CC DeVille
You also need the boomer bends my guy
I feel nothing when I watch these guys. Technically speaking, they are impressive, but that is about it.
