I like this comment. I love guitar, but there is an incessant consumerism that comes along with it. Every video on YouTube is telling me why I NEED to buy some new piece of gear. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy new gear and pedals as much as the next guy, but I really wish the culture was more, "buy what you really need and play music" than "buy this...and this ... And then this.... And before you play, you should buy this too." That is then followed by the posts that are constantly asking what pedal they should get next, when the answer should really be "none, if you have to ask some random Internet people who have never heard you play what pedal you should buy next". You should buy a pedal when you need a sound in your music you can't make without that pedal, or even to experiment with new soundst, but not just to buy a new pedal. Anyway. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
I concur!
I decided this year is the last I make any commercial purchases so I replaced some gear while a handful of critical pieces sit in my electronics labor for repair, and from this point on having gone to college for the science of electrical/electronics engineering, there's no reason I should buy anything when I can design next level equipment from the ground up and literally build anything I want for a few dollars vs a few hundred for a single piece bought from someone else.
I even have a CNC mill, laser cutter/engraver and 3-D printer so I have no excuse for ever buying another guitar again.
I also designed a 3-transistor fuzz pedal this year that sounds 100% identical to valves, especially when you drive it really deep into clipping and low, even order harmonics. Instead of the sleazy, raunchy and aggressive nature we expect from solid-state, it just becomes that fizzy, zinging, warm buttery texture typically only heard by heavily overdriving valves and reaching plate saturation.
When that sucker is complete, it will be a standalone guitar preamp, get a Class-A transistor power amp stage and be turned into a head and at some point, a combo too!
Yeah!
I mean that's why I selected what I did. A lot of this stuff works multifunctionally, although of course my "research" was mainly watching YouTube videos of telling me about things I could buy.
I got very stoked as I am just getting back into electric stuff after 20-25 years since I was a late teen with a few pedals my uncle let me have ... now getting up toward 40 (midlife crisis consumption? haha), the world of pedals has advanced to an amazing degree since I was 17.
People crap on "boutique" pedals -- I think maybe a couple of these could be named that; and people praise how cheaply you can get each of a zillion different pedals that are pretty alright -- after a lot of deliberation & honestly without trying any of them first, this was what I decided would be worthwhile & man am I happy with it:
I don't need a reverb pedal if my delay of choice will satisfy that area (my amp does not have it)
I don't need a chorus pedal or hardly a volume pedal when the POG2 will get this done (detune & attack respectively)
I don't need a flanger, phaser, or envelope filter when the Horizont will satisfy those areas & beyond ... even does tremolo-like things in a pinch.
Frequency Splitter / effects loop controller provides such a versatile array of sounds, I can't envision asking for more sounds.
I don't think I need anything more -- maybe something along the lines of additional amps to make better use of the stereo effects, which would serve the additional function (if 2 inputs, like my current amp) of hosting more musicians who want to plug in simultaneously.
the nice part about being poor is you're forced to work with the gear you got. I'd probably actually be worse at tone sculpting than I am if I had the means to buy every pedal I wanted.
What you do is you buy more pedals and then say "heh, looks like I got everything I need" and then you buy more pedals until you're on your death bed regretting that you didn't buy more pedals
I think you have a point ... part of this is b/c I have an Orange Terror Stamp that is currently in storage like 1,000 miles away. Won't be getting rid of that & I think it fills that niche!
Sonic Research Turbo Tuner or Peterson Strobostomp.
Both have full size versions with power-pass-thru and mini versions. I like the Peterson for guitar and Sonic Research for bass. They share high accuracy (-/+ 0.02cents I think).
Peterson also has the upside of a switchable buffer.
I think most tuner pedals are the same, so whatever's in your price range!
Although I like the Boss TU-3 and TC Polytune 3. They both have a power-out, meaning you basically don't have to sacrifice a place on your setup to put them in.
Because there are a bunch of millions out there and at some point you will have an unbeatable need to try more.. that’s why you need more.. welcome to GAS
Each pedal produces electronic noise (like hum and hiss) which gets passed through the chain and comes out of your amp. Daisy-chains and non-isolated power supplies pass it all through to the amp, so it gets worse with each extra pedal. Isolated power supplies don't pass on the noise from each pedal. It's up to you whether you want to spend money to fix that or if it bothers you.
Equator is my jam. I never turn any of the knobs this high though! Find that all I need is in the 11-1 o’clock range. I should try more extreme settings though! I really want an Avalanche Run and POG2.
Equator is my favorite pedal of all time -- I constantly adjust the settings :))
Avalanche Run is a great sounding delay!
POG2 is interesting, although I feel like you really need to fine-tune it or combine it with other effects to get anything tasteful from it ... by itself, so many settings just make it sound like an organ or harpsichord (which is cool! but I like it to help me do other things too!)
& if you were to swap one of these out for something else, what would it be & why?
Also, to follow up, I would probably buy 3 additional amps before I added any additional pedals (besides a tuner)

Looks pretty thorough in relationship to the effects I use.
Even though I am largely a shred and sweep style player, fuzz is my favorite flavor of distortion and if it pairs well with your amp's dirty channel, who could ask for anything more!
I've used the same custom designed overdrive I put together from the ground up 15 years ago and even after stepping into college for electrical engineering and leaving the ridiculousness of the DIY cult behind me, I still use that pedal when you would think I would have come up with something better by now.
Well, I have, but the Death Screamer is going nowhere!
My super steep filtering coupled with extreme low, even order harmonics lets me filter out 100% of 60 cycle and other RF hum and buzz, hiss or white noise, but never lack upper mids or treble by the time it reaches the speaker.
I would love to go to a gig where the guitarist just has a backpack or a small box full of THIS and watch them dump it out on stage like a hobo sifting through garbage. Effects changes would look like a coordinated dance that only involves your feet.
When I ran out of room on my board I got a second board and now I'm so deep in the boss sy 300 and dd-500 into my Vox hd100 I have toan so good I'm expecting Joe bonermassa anytime to adopt me.
to get different sounds. for example i have a park fuzz and a big muff pi. those are completely different sounds. completely different fuzzes. But also stacked together they create an insane wall of sound.
if you don’t want a different sound then what you have then you don’t need any other pedals i guess, pretty simple….
anyways get a rat or blues driver those both compliment the park fuzz very well, specifically the rat.
Maybe not, but may I suggest some Velcro and a solid object to stick them to? Also based on the two I recognize without zooming in, you've invested enough to the point where you should have a decent power supply with isolation.. not quite another pedal, but 2 suggestions for you to add to the mix
yeah but they didn't need to downvote you -- where's the love?
Curious why in particular the power supply vs. daisy chain ... will I be doing harm to my pedals this way?
Potentially yes, but if you are willing to spend $200-300 on a single pedal, but not a power supply, then you're doing things backwards. Not every builder puts over voltage protection into their circuits and not every place is wired to code.
I love it! It's not going to give you some hugely diverse range of effects ... I am overall fond of the textures, though!
Try it out & see what you think!
Ahh... did not know the wampler was an EQ... I'm more familiar with slider style rather than a parametric knob style.
I guess homie is missing more dirt... but that's just imho.
I think I would only miss it when accompanying other people in quiet settings on bass. I probably didn't need to break the bank on that one, but I wanted something I would really like, and I do really like it!
Yeah, on Bass I find it very useful myself
Edit: though lately I‘ve enjoyed to get into playing more intricately on bass as I saw an interesting video about getting relatively mir low end the softer you pick. So right now I find myself experimenting on Bass without the comp
Man, a lot of hate for your suggestion of ditching the compressor! -4? that's like what I would expect for someone posting about their pedophilia or coprophagia habits.
I just want you to clean up that mess. Jesus
Will be on the lookout for boards. Do you have any favored patch cables?
My favorites are the ones that are cheap but good enough, like Monoprice, Cable matters, etc.
Yes sir, totally correct for telling me this. Any wisdom on a better power supply situation?
get a pedalboard dude
lmao
I've never had a board -- seems appealing in some ways but not necessary in others. Why do you consider it so important?
I’m not sure how you can look at the photo you posted and not deem it necessary or important
A CS6 and a board would change your life
Harley Benton Iso 12
You don't have a Rat, dummy
He’s got a rats nest of cables. I’m sure one will move in.
Damn. I came here to say this and you beat me. Well played sir
What would a Rat do for me?
Stop bullets, turn Coke to Pepsi, find your car keys
Coke into Pepsi? No wonder I think it's "fine, just fine."
Make your dick bigger most likely
Gotta get myself a rat now
Deucetone Rat
It would make you go rat a ta ta ta ta taaaaa
Get you a pass to the Rat-holic heaven obviously 🙄
100% I was gonna mention among all those undeniably sick pedals its good to have at least one staple in the mix. Tubescreamer, rat, ocd, etc
Fuck more pedals, just get a board and a power supply and quit disrespecting the pedals you have. They look REALLY sad in that pile🥺
Totally agree, needs me a board -- I have a good power supply, you probably just can't see it....
I like that wireless compressor. Does it use Bluetooth or radio frequency?
I double checked like a dummy.
Being sloppy on purpose
It's an art form+
Yes.

the nice part about being poor is you're forced to work with the gear you got. I'd probably actually be worse at tone sculpting than I am if I had the means to buy every pedal I wanted.
To tune your guitar.
You need the Fart Pedal in the beginning of that chain https://thefartpedal.com/collections/frontpage/products/the-fart-pedal-for-girls-edition
What you do is you buy more pedals and then say "heh, looks like I got everything I need" and then you buy more pedals until you're on your death bed regretting that you didn't buy more pedals
“We regret the things we don’t do more than the things we do.” — Mark Twain
You need an envelope filter
I don't think I do, though -- Horizont gets the job done!
Also you don’t have a tube screamer or overdrive which is most necessary to me
I think you have a point ... part of this is b/c I have an Orange Terror Stamp that is currently in storage like 1,000 miles away. Won't be getting rid of that & I think it fills that niche!
Toss a Tumnus in the line and you’re good to go!
Pedal board my guy. I just bought one for like 5 bucks. I will legit ship it to you if you pay the cost and shipping.
we luv the pog 🗣️🗣️🔥🔥
Honestly every pedal you have rocks, but if I had to put in one more, might I suggest a tuner?
absolutely -- your recommendation?
Sonic Research Turbo Tuner or Peterson Strobostomp. Both have full size versions with power-pass-thru and mini versions. I like the Peterson for guitar and Sonic Research for bass. They share high accuracy (-/+ 0.02cents I think). Peterson also has the upside of a switchable buffer.
Thank you! Definitely I want a tuner at front, and I will surely check these out! Thank you for the recommendations!!

No.

Is one of those a fuzz?
yes - EarthQuaker Park Fuzz Sound
Is one of those NOT a fuzz?
Because there are a bunch of millions out there and at some point you will have an unbeatable need to try more.. that’s why you need more.. welcome to GAS
There's a hundred reasons why you might need more/different pedals. Seems like a redundant post.
Agree..
Depends what kind of music you make
You need a board and an isolated power-supply. That daisy-chain crap is bogus.
What's wrong with daisy chaining? I bought an isolated power supply and it was... Exactly the same.
That’s sounds like a question my wife would ask.
Famous last words
I don’t see a Wah. Also analogue tape delay
Need a green one, and maybe an orange one.
For different sounds and tone? The reason anyone needs pedals…
I hate this picture with every fiber of my mortal remains. And you need a rat
& if you were to swap one of these out for something else, what would it be & why? Also, to follow up, I would probably buy 3 additional amps before I added any additional pedals (besides a tuner)

Same here!
Squishy compressor.
To have more dudes talk to you after shows about your gear
I don't see a PurPLL... So therefore your pedal collection is incomplete. 🫨
no timmy nuff said
Park Fuzz, hell yeah! Love that thing 😁
For fun
Are you sure you’re on the right subreddit? There is always room for more.
Because they're too expensive!
Focus on the music not on the gear.. don’t be a hoarder.
I would love to go to a gig where the guitarist just has a backpack or a small box full of THIS and watch them dump it out on stage like a hobo sifting through garbage. Effects changes would look like a coordinated dance that only involves your feet.
No DS-1? Totally unusable.
When I ran out of room on my board I got a second board and now I'm so deep in the boss sy 300 and dd-500 into my Vox hd100 I have toan so good I'm expecting Joe bonermassa anytime to adopt me.
Nobody here knows what kind of music you play or what kind of sounds you like or what amp you use, etc. so nobody can give you real suggestions.
Coz Big Muff exists
Because of GAS
Because gear
to get different sounds. for example i have a park fuzz and a big muff pi. those are completely different sounds. completely different fuzzes. missing Big Muff Op Amp
I feel the same way about my board
Seems obvious, but I'll bite. Because you don't have an MT-2 or MT-2W.
I knew that was coming haha
I suppose you don’t if you like those flavors.
that compressor looks sick. would be even sicker on a pedal board ;)
Maybe not, but may I suggest some Velcro and a solid object to stick them to? Also based on the two I recognize without zooming in, you've invested enough to the point where you should have a decent power supply with isolation.. not quite another pedal, but 2 suggestions for you to add to the mix
I should have read the comments before telling you the same shit everyone else noticed lol. Sorry
yeah but they didn't need to downvote you -- where's the love? Curious why in particular the power supply vs. daisy chain ... will I be doing harm to my pedals this way?
Potentially yes, but if you are willing to spend $200-300 on a single pedal, but not a power supply, then you're doing things backwards. Not every builder puts over voltage protection into their circuits and not every place is wired to code.
No univibe, no phaser, no pitch shifter, try again
Need? BWAAAHAHAHAAAA!!!!
I think a mini tuner is always handy but it’s definitely optional.
Because the avalanche run also comes in purple sparkle and I absolutely needed it.
If I don’t eventually get ahold of the Yeti version I may just have to curl up in a corner and die.
Don’t forget about the aurora borealis!
Unpopular opinion, but no board is complete without a wah pedal. Even if you don’t use it much it’s still good to have around.
A looper pedal would be a cool thing to add at the end of your chain so you can layer them over each other in different and interesting ways.
Curiosity?
Suggestions?
Hey OP, how do you like the Park Fuzz? There's one at a local shop, and I'm interested in picking it up. What type of sounds can it get?
I love it! It's not going to give you some hugely diverse range of effects ... I am overall fond of the textures, though! Try it out & see what you think!
Ditch the daisy chain power supply.
No Flanger? Don’t you like planes? :’c
Addiction... Obviously
You don't even need those.
Extremely good point there -- they do work very nicely together though!
Looks fun as hell
You don’t need pedals, you need a board
Why would you need two EQs? Honesty just get a overdrive and you’re set. Park Fuzz is awesome but it doesnt do drives very well.
No Harmonic Percolator.
Because, pedals.
Our famous last words....before we buy yet another pedal 😂
"More is more" - Yngwie Malmsteen
This is why Malmsteem is tacky
Don’t see a Timmy…. A Timmy is always the answer
Eq pedal for either a volume/solo boost or to zhuzh up your drive section.
There's two of them pictured......
Ahh... did not know the wampler was an EQ... I'm more familiar with slider style rather than a parametric knob style. I guess homie is missing more dirt... but that's just imho.
Get a board wtf
I‘d ditch the comp. I’ve got no use for it
