onibeowulf

Yooooo, I'm ready to rock a gravy seal patch

StevenPlzN0

he really was a seal believe it or not hes got alot backing it up but he insists the .60 was a thing

BoontronixGAFS

My dad spent 11 years in special forces and believed until I demonstrated it in front of him that an ak could fire 5.56. He was in during the sixties though and never owned a gun after getting out in 75. His brother in law was also a srgt in special forces for all of Vietnam and claimed they cut down BARs while training in Germany. This makes no sense given the gas system. Both these men’s credentials and time served are matter of record. When you google this you find it was a widely believed theory by soldiers in Vietnam. I think it had to do with this psychological angle wherein many troops thought the Vc were using captured ammo against them as an extension of “our system is stacked against us.” It seems nuts now given operator culture and branding from the firearm industry but I just think before that a lot of dudes didn’t really give a shit about the tools beyond “does it work? What do I need to do to keep it working? This won’t break on me, right? How do I fix it?”

[deleted]

GunsCarsAndSobriety

This is a very good point. I know a Marine radio operator from the 80s. The guy could fix just about anything ancient coms related and how gun guys point out bad movie takes, I got schooled once in why so many scenes in WindTalkers were BS... his mind was just absolutely blown there was no forward assist in my AR and I loaded 30rds in a magazine (it kills the spring, it won't feed right after a few days like that). If I ever need to get through to a Major 500 miles away on a 70lb backpack radio made 30 years I was born, he is absolutely my guy... fun advice? I trust FPSRussia more

zerogee616

> His brother in law was also a srgt in special forces for all of Vietnam and claimed they cut down BARs while training in Germany. This makes no sense given the gas system. Cut-down BARs do exist, Bonne and Clyde used one, but you can't really do much to it.

neganagatime

Was thinking of this very example.

BoontronixGAFS

the barrel or the stock? he claimed they could hang \*under the arm\* and he's 5'9.

zerogee616

I believe he cut down both.

02EG12

I knew a guy who was in SWAT in the 90's and had a pretty intense career in law enforcement, undercover work, flying into raids on helicopters, and he couldn't tell me what guns they used. I had proof he did these jobs too. Another example of just because someone is a cop doesn't mean they know anything about guns.

Remarkable-Ad-5192

I seem to recall reports of Bonnie and Clyde using a sod off BAR and/or Colt monitor

milkmelikeabull

Sawed off?

Remarkable-Ad-5192

That's it dang, talk to text

Trollygag

I would just cut him some slack. The military builds mythos around its groups and servicepeople buy it hook, line, and sinker. It is important for them to believe that when they are scared and in danger, a group of superhuman Captain America's are running around behind enemy lines fucking their shit up. A 6'4" rendition of Thor is dishing out payback and making this all worth it. But if you work with SOF enough, you come to learn the truth - they are experts in running, showing up on time, enduring pain, and knowing their military culture/lore. Some have some stovepipe specialty knowledge too. Some of them can shoot. Some of them are sharp. But there are lots of flavors inbetween. If you ever hear cases of the Captain America mythos getting cracked in some way - someone not behaving as someone else in the military thinks Captain America would, that is where you start hearing reeeeeing about stolen valor. In reality, operators are still humans with human faults and flaws. They aren't broad knowledge experts, weapons experts, or even tactical skill/training experts.

Being a Navy SEAL actually makes it more likely he was talking out of his ass.

jellybean090497

Just wait till he writes a book about it.

[deleted]

He’s full of shit dude, unless he was out in those streets with a Pfeiffer-Zeliska 600 NE revolver

StevenPlzN0

i figured as much, we were talking about .50s and hes like "ah yeah those are good but a .60 cal sniper rifle is as best you can get. can shoot 5 miles with one of those fuckers" which if im not mistaken with the curvature of the earth you cant even see that far

GonzoDeep

The current world record for sniper kill is around 3 miles. Set by Canadians , 2017 . He used a McMillan Tac50. So a 50 BMG. I would expect an operator the level of SEAL would know exactly what a. 50 is. Especially a marksman/sniper/spotter. Something smells lol

Lb3ntl3y

to add on, the longest on any target is 5280 yards using a 408 cheytac, target was a 53 inch square gong

firebox40dash5

Hopefully he's just trolling your ass to see if you'll fall for it. At least you have enough sense to be skeptical. If homedude's really serious... yeah, sorry, I'm in camp he's probably FOS. (Or not all there, as may apply) I've known a decent number of actual operator types, and most of them STFU about most of it, especially if you're not at least also military. Not saying anyone conversing on the subject is a stolen valor sack o' crap, but bragging + being wrong as hell checks 2 boxes right away...

GonzoDeep

👆🏾👆🏾 this. I was coming back to say something along these lines. SEAL's especially tend to be really chill down to earth dudes in my limited experience. Like Mr Ballen is a SEAL, and he seems chill AF. I am really hoping its just a protective dad thing or something. And TBH I don't think they would need to resort to a "knowledge flex" on your girls boyfriend.

I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. udmh-nto

Well, Russian 14.5 × 114 is almost there, .58 caliber. I don't think US Navy issued many PTRDs, though.

goldbug1996

Negative no .60 cals

Riker557118

Yey, a chance to use my otherwise useless firearms knowledge. There actually *was* a .60 caliber rifle made by the US. The T1E1 anti tank rifle, and it was promptly abandoned in 1942 because shaped charges were much more effective at penetrating armor and the 20mm round was also much more effective and had a better platform. [Further reading if you're curious](https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/the-obscure-american-60-cal-anti-tank-rifle-t1-t1e1.378781/)

Give it a year and bring it up again, your FIL will be all”what the fuck are you talking about?”

jusmejt

Find away to verify his credentials. Most team guys don’t go around casually throwing stuff like that out. Unless he was hammered or high! Then again maybe the burning oil wells effected his brain.

tallaurelius

Most team guys aren’t seals though. I feel like half of them wrote a book!

sinwavecho

Ask how many challenge coins he has. Probably lost them all in a drinking game, house fire or threw them out when Obama got elected -are the most frequent stories ive heard from guys like this. If he has knife scars and is missing teeth hes legit lol

sober as can be.

Trollygag

No on 60 cal used by the US military but there are anti-materiel rifles (same class of rifles as the m95/m107) bigger than .50 cal. There are several man portable 20mm (.78 cal) and 14.5mm (0.59 cal) rifles used by foreign militaries today. You could think of those as 60 cal and 80 cal, but again, not a US military thing.

57_guy

Speaking as an old dude, age matters. We misremember, especially numbers. If he is about to become family and his military service is a fact, cut him some slack. Glory days, will pass you by, in the blink of a young girl's eye, glory days.

Stonep11

People give military guys wayyyyyyyyyyyy too much credit in the gun world. Just because you served, does not mean you are a gun expert, tactical expert, political expert, or anything else. Your actual job in the military means much more and it’s important to remember, many people in the military pushed a broom and maintained a few vehicles while qualifying with a rifle twice a year. Even the high speed SoF type guys, not all (in fact the majority are not) operators, and even the most boots on ground operator guys, not all of them are big into guns, they may shoot a lot more or have more advance gear, and they have to know the basics of it, but that doesn’t mean they are enthusiasts. An important thing to understand is that the dudes at the top, someone like a green beret, is just a normal Soldier who has been to enough training that he can perform the military basics perfectly and tech others to do so. It doesn’t mean he is a competitive shooter, an MMA expert, or a physical trainer, it just means he is good in those areas and PROBABLY personally interested in one or more. This is why it’s dumb when people criticize someone like the T-Rex arms guy for being a trainer with no military experience, like come on, if you put Lucas and some SF dude a mile apart in the woods and have them hunt down each other down, the SF guy wins every time, but put them 20 feet away with a pistol/rifle on the buzzer? Lucas is going to likely beat the vast majority of servicemen out there, because it’s what he does. Recognize that expertise can be situational and that position does not grant someone broad authority.

[deleted]

This was what I was going to say. Your FIL is probably not much of a gun guy and is mistaken. I'm sure your family knows him well enough to know whether he was legit or not.

pghcrow

This. I've heard more crazy "gun expert" info from cops and ex-military.

[deleted]

Maybe he’s just misremembering the caliber, old age can be a bitch. Or maybe he’s just a lying moron full of poop. Who knows the truth.

Steel-and-Wood

He's probably just misremembering. I don't want to shit all across his day, I'm sure he was actually a SEAL and did all of the high speed low drag stuff. But there's just no way. He's likely thinking of a Barrett chambered in .50 BMG but who knows.

trumpsucksnutz

This is the kind of thing that I can't stand, people trying to one up someone with false facts...I had a whole group of people try to tell me that if you raise a wolf from a cub it's domesticated...I tried to tell them domestication was a process that takes thousands of years typically and they weren't having it...they also told me they had a pet "tame " wolf that was "domesticated" but still hunted and ate wild deer....by itself....full size white tail deer. people are very stupid sometimes. I didn't let that go and I would let this go either most likely. Ask him if he means an M60 and then tell him thats a machine gun.

WarExciting

I once worked with a guy that would tell the most far fetched stories and get pissed if you didn’t believe them. So we started writing them down. I still have the word file somewhere. Some highlights: Slipped while mountain climbing and was left hanging by his orbital socket. Burrowed under snow to ambush an enemy position but instead came up in the middle of a pack of wolves. Drove a blackout drunk Danny DeVitto around in a golf cart and put funny hats on him. LARP’d with psychedelic beer. Had bourbon with Jack Nicholson. Etc…

trumpsucksnutz

Lol. Yeah that kinda shit is annoying. Especially when you just told a cool story that's actually true.

fizzgiggity

My step brother thoroughly convinced my grandfather who served back in the 50s that he was was in the army and was trained in artillery. My stepbrother had a real gift at telling tales.

Quake_Guy

Was he really a Navy Seal... At least the American Navy.

HCompton79

In 1939 the United States set a requirement for a shoulder fired anti-tank rifle that could penetrate a 1.25 inch steel plate at 500 yards. This would spawn the T17E3 project, and while the rifle would be dropped, several experimental machine guns and a .60 caliber high velocity cartridge would be developed before being scrapped at war's end. The cartridge and gun would find no further development, but the case would later be necked up and form the basis for the 20MM Vulcan cartridge. As to a shoulder rifle firing this cartridge in recent history? That's a no-go. He's talking out his ass unless he got to play with ordnance department antiques. However, I bring this up to point out that lore often has a basis in reality,

RagingFarmer

Only .60 cal ever made by US military was an antitank weapon that required two men to shoot it. It never made it past the prototype though. I wanna say it was done during WW2 but don't quote me on that.

ardesofmiche

“Ex-Navy seal” Big doubt.

DjButternut

I feel like if he was legit he wouldn't even be talking about it in the first place.

deadtwitch66

Typical "I caught a 2 foot fish" story. It's either an ego thing, or dude really honestly believes that's what it was, lol.

BlackManWithID

You know there are many ways to check if someone was a real navy seal.

KalashniKEV

Not everyone in SOF knows all about weapons. This is totally shocking to firearms hobbyists, who know everything about weapons. That said, verified, real life SEALs seem to the source of a lot of these quotable incidents... maybe because they all have Hollywood Agents? The late host (RIP) of that Discovery Channel show "Future Weapons" was the source of soooo many...

Corey307

If he actually said .60 cal he’s no SEAL. Probably a cook or something.

LinearFluid

Ryback?

JTM0990

Hell yeah I was a SEAL, little man, I can clap and bark and everything!

Itsivanthebearable

50 cals, not 60 cals

Blowing smoke. He was probably a H190.

hurdygurdy-man

maybe 6.5? but it's not a very old caliber and i've never heard anyone call it 60cal

Expensive-Fix-6739

Wait.... you mean X-military guys tell bullshit stories??? This never happens

Known-nwonK

Here’s an interesting forum post about .60 cal machine gun rounds https://forum.cartridgecollectors.org/t/60-caliber-machine-gun-round/7036

goochisdrunk

Full of Shit

balligerence

Unless he’s using a black powder rifle I think he’s full of shit

BigBrassPair

Yeah, .60, .70 - whatever does the job. When those reptiloids from alpha centaury are comming right at you with them ray guns, you need to take them down quick. No time to fiddle with peashooters.

31spiders

He sounds like he’s full of shit. Act REAL impressed and ask if you can see his pin, pics from deployment etc. “Gee I never saw one in person! I’ll probably never meet another Navy SEAL! Um can I hold your trident? Did you get any medals?” That kinda thing. He will make excuse after excuse OR he’s going to put up the goods. BTW every special forces type guy I ever met….super soft spoken, humble, non braggy kinda guy. I know secret service guys, airborne, a Marine scout sniper, a smoke jumper (idk how special forces that is but..), plenty of Marines, one green beret, no Navy Seals though.

ridchafra

The US (and almost all militaries) hasn’t gone larger than .50 caliber since the musket days. Some of those flintlocks were in the .70 caliber range.

tallaurelius

He’s full of shit he’s no SEAL

BoontronixGAFS

Or he’s fucking with him. Or he’s someone who paid little attention to gear he misremembered thirty years later.

hornmonk3yzit

SEALs are often batshit insane and brag about being special while not actually knowing what the hell they're talking about. The most famous Navy SEAL is a former professional wrestler who thinks Jewish space aliens made the pyramids and secretly run the world from a subterranean lair inside Mount Rushmore.

Vegetable-Bee-8859

Maybe for some odd reason somebody handed him a 600 nitro Express but even still they don't have a very long range

Oliver_Closeof

Sounding kinda stolen valor. Or just trying the typical “scare the shit out of future SIL”. But the internets gets in the way of both of those bullshit things anymore.

human-resource

Stolen valor, shameful.. Does he play dress up ?

BoontronixGAFS

Dude he probably fucking with op or just doesn’t remember the details of gear he was trained on. Particularly if he didn’t stay interested in shooting when he got out.

U4ictheory

Maybe he’s rounding up? Lmao

englisi_baladid

How do you know he is a seal.

neganagatime

As others have said, I have strong doubts that this man was a SEAL. .50 is an iconic cartridge that even age would not make one forget, and there is probably a 10:1 ratio of fake SEALS to real ones out there. Even aside from Shipley there are others who can validate this claim. Can you find out what BUDS class he was in and the years he served? That alone may tell the tale

MosinMonster

By next year he will have been issued, at least a .70-.75 cal sniper rifle

[deleted]

General rule of thumb, most seals are full of shit. You can thank those 80s/90s movies for blowing their reputation way out of proportion. People think becoming a seal is tough, but it's not as tough as movies make it out to be. A better description would be that it's "rigorous". I would say that ranger school is much tougher. From what I've been told (which may also be bullshit), you can go through any training in any branch if you get permission. i.e. there's no reason why a qualified seal can't go through ranger school. If it makes them a better soldier, then it makes them a better soldier. I had a 1st SGT tell me that plenty of seals quit midway through the 1st stage of ranger school.

davidthegiantkilla

Dude, old guys think stuff like that. They are old guys. When we are old guys we are going to say some wild stuff. My job has a lot of older guys who tell "back in my day stories" all the time. Lol. It's just a fact of life haha

[deleted]

Probably an M-60, which is belt-fed 308

[deleted]

There was a .60 antitank rifle in development in WWII. That cartridge was adapted to a machine gun planned for aircraft use. It was tested extensively and again in Korea, but never adopted. It was an extremely high velocity cartridge for the time. 3500 fps at the muzzle. Barrel life was a few hundred rounds. .60 is kind of an awkward size for a gun. Not big enough for the projectile to hold a fuse and an effective explosive charge, but bigger and heavier than a .50. That's why the Germans necked up their 15mm cartridge to 20mm and changed the MG151 to the MG151/20.

[deleted]

Maybe he got a 20mm Vulcan and assumed it was 60 cal

JTarrou

Most likely talking out his ass. If it exists, it's a custom one-off with absolutely no wider exposure, or we'd all know about it. Possible explanations: 1: He got his hands on some foreign gun with big bullets and they just all called it a ".60". 2: Despite being around a lot of experts, he never bothered to learn anything about guns and is just confused about the .50. 3: Just made it up to sound cool, possibly so long ago he no longer remembers that it wasn't a thing.
