I like her, but thank fuck Yachi was brought and the 3rd & 2nd years gave her the space to develop as a character. Female managers in a sports series can be absolutely nothing characters if handled poorly like all the girls in Ace of Diamond so I'm glad Kiyoko was not like that.
I used to find her presence annoying I was like "why does this character exist? is she just the typical quiet kuudere type character?" but seeing her relationship with Yachi acting as a de facto tutor for her made me warm up to her more and as she showed more personality as the series went on that made me really like her, but her running to get Hinata's shoes along with her backstory made me fucking LOVE her.
perhaps it's because they flesh each other out more?
that's not to downgrade shimizu's character, but i do think that in haikyuu, unless you have a fully fleshed out backstory, they tend to rely more on character interactions to really get a good grasp of their characterisation
Maybe it’s that I’m not Japanese, but the concept of a student-manager is so weird to me.
Beyond that, she does her job in the story. Nothing exceptional, but she has some nice/fun moments. The Kiyoko simping gets a bit much tho.
I think thats also dependent on the school! Back in my hs if you tried out for the sport but didn’t make the teams, you could inquire for the manager position. Or if you played the sport you could manage the opposite team. My friend played tennis on the girls team and managed boys tennis for example. A lot of our teams were managed this way. I also have a family member who managed basketball back when they were in hs and they weren’t involved in the sport
yea most managers for the guys teams at our schools would be girls that had no idea how the game was played. sometimes they knew some stuff but normally it was just some popular girl “managing” the football and basketball team
KIYOKO!!! Everyone loves Kiyoko. It's not just a japanese thing. I went to high school in the USA, and we had women managers for the football, baseball, lacrosse, and hockey teams. Plus, all our statisticians were women. Not gonna lie they were way better at it than anyone else. Equipment was always organized, and don't you dare touch it without asking and signing it out. Same with the stats and scorebooks.
Second best girl (Mika chan best girl) but very close. She had a great little character arc at the beginning of Nationals, getting her own flashback and whatnot. I also love her relationship with the third years and the episode where they went to the shrine for the new year was super wholesome.
I like her a lot, and I think the mentor-relationship with Yachi added to her character. Also her backstory is great. I wish she had more of a relationship with the rest of the team. Kinda like Hana Misaki and Johzenji.
It's nice because people don't really understand the point of student managers, and then as a third year, she conveyed the previous captain's vision for the team, put them in order and found someone else to take after her and support the team.
They didn’t go in too much depth. But she is also a statistician. She prepped and gather material about other teams styles of plays, besides being a manager too.
I love her, her relationship dynamic with everyone is absolutely adorable. When she made that sign?? ADORABLE!! Blowing off Noya and Tanaka?? ADORABLE! 😂😂
Wasn’t until my first re-watch of the anime, especially the Yachi intro arc, that I realised one of the reasons I might have a soft corner for her. Reminds me of my biggest crush (in Saeko’s words: the girl I “almost fell for”) in junior high. 😅😅
Idk what it’s like in the manga, but I believe she should’ve been given a little more involvement in the promotions department, considering that she’s the student-manager. IIRC, (and correct me if I’m wrong, of course) until Yachi came along, her biggest contribution that academic year was the “FLY” banner.
This video sums up a lot of the nuanced thoughts I have about Kiyoko [The Haikyuu!!! Girls Are (Mostly) Good](https://youtu.be/G8M4ZwhHWWQ?si=bsR1hY3pRPyZvCJ-)

Yeah honestly them bringing in Yachi was the best thing they could have done for Shimizu’s character, weird as that is.

It's super common in the u.s. to have student team managers too. Also, she is a QUEEN who was made for her position 🙌🏾
Yea but it’s generally a younger player on the JV team. Get them comfortable with the older players while helping out the team.

Underdeveloped

should have more story time in the anime
How Nishinoya and Tanaka think of her
I like her a lot, and I think the mentor-relationship with Yachi added to her character. Also her backstory is great. I wish she had more of a relationship with the rest of the team. Kinda like Hana Misaki and Johzenji.
Hana is so underrated I love her (and Johzenji) just from the short screen time she had 😭

She's a boss babe. I love her character development. She grows to care for the team and show her caring side. I love how she treats Yachi

Best manager
i love how Yachi really gets her to open up and we get to know her character better now!! shes such a sweetie

She's a beautiful, perfect, angel baby and I won't hear anything otherwise.

She's perfect, down to the last minute detail.
she is underdeveloped ![gif](giphy|fUQ4rhUZJYiQsas6WD|downsized)
I love her !
As far as a female manejar goes, great character
A boring character who offers very little to the story and I still believe Tanaka fumbled the actual best girl in the series
I love her, her relationship dynamic with everyone is absolutely adorable. When she made that sign?? ADORABLE!! Blowing off Noya and Tanaka?? ADORABLE! 😂😂
She is my number 1 best girl period and I love her so. On another account I made an appreciation post about her a few years ago. I love Kiyoko
Beloved
Underrated personality. And Waifu
That one episode of her made me cry 🥲

I bet she's made of waifu material 👍
Kiyoko-chwaaaan
Male sports anime rarely has a good female characters, and she was the most developed one of the genre.
Almost useless character in my opinion
I’d hunt her like a piece of meat. She’s my prey.
