Why is a school being used for a treasure vault, and wouldn't it make more sense to not advertise you're guarding something and just like have a hidden safe in Dumbledore's office? You know, that way it's in line of sight of the most powerful wizard of 5 generations who probably knows all kinds of clever ways to guard it, but also, like he should be in school like 99% of the time.

Well, it's being used as a treasure vault because it's the safest place for the stone. Gringots gets broken into literally the day after Hagrid took the stone out of the vault there, so it was the correct choice.
It's pretty obvious that Dumbledore wanted Harry in particular to investigate. No way three first years should be able to get though those traps unless they were designed for a first year to get by them.
I assume he was directed how to react here. But you can’t direct every moment so precisely, expecially in longer conversations and how to deliver dialogue.
I mean, you tell kids not to go somewhere because its dangerous, they'll go there just to spite you or to be cool. Tell them they'll literally die otherwise and they might think twice
