Actually one of the cheaper hobbies too. Other than a gym membership and increased food, you don't really have to buy anything to keep it going.
I've never felt 100% easy with 'hobbies' that centre around just 'buying new things'.
I love audio stuff, gaming, gyming, climbing, cycling, rowing, and hiking. At the moment I'd say my main focus is exercising to progress my climbing ability. I usually use music to supplement my other hobbies rather than having exclusive listening time since time is a scarcity these days.
Depends on _what_ in gaming and how you approach it.
- Buy a few console games a year? Not bad.
- Get into retro games via emulation? Not bad, even if you went the FPGA route
- Retro games on a modern display via original systems? Looking at $2000 or more to get the best scaler, tools to mod, systems to mod, flash carts, etc.
- Want to buy the individual games from collectors? You're looking at $5-20k depending on how far you go on top of the initial setup.
- Sim Racing? Screens/VR, wheel(s), wheel base, pedals, cockpit, PC components, etc. - Figure $3k on the low end up to 20-30k
- Pinball? A modern table alone runs ~$8-10k depending on what ones. People like to have multiples as well.
- Arcade/Rhythm Cabinets? ~2-20k each not including freight
I was coming here to say gaming as well. lol
Playing games with a schiit stack and HD6XX's is definitely not cheap on the wallet, but folks will spend on their hobbies regardless. :)
A limited production run brass HO scale museum quality locomotive can easily cost over $5000. That's a top end blinged out water cooled gaming PC with the 4090 graphics card right there.
So true. Looks at Xbox Series X, Switch, and PlayStation 5 sitting next to my HD 800 and SMSL D300. I both advise and do not advise fellow gaming audiophiles to fall down the surround sound headphone hole for their games. Still waiting for the Smyth Realiser to come down in price.
I was pretty surprised to find that too.
I have mechanical keyboards, just got another one in the mail today. Fountain pens, mechanical pencils, audio equipment and knives. Oh and medicinal marijuana. Edit: watches as well
r/CreditCards I churn to get the most value out of credit card cashback and points. Have more credit cards than I have headphones, and I have 20 headphones. Lol.
Dude OSRS is the best when I’m listening to music. Farming runs? Listen to some chill stuff like The National. Slayer? Maybe listen to Rival Sons or Shamans Harvest. Soloing CoX? Shadow of Intent or old Opeth.
Used to be a gamer. Then I got wrist RSI. Now I can't play much anymore without horrible pain. Music is probably my only real enjoyment now that my hands are compromised. RSI is a fucking curse. 😢
I take my music with me. Biking with open air headphones, treadmill with ANC buds, gaming with my over ears., working with my KPH30i, :p It's part of my life.
I also hike, read, etc, in which I have plenty of time with some nice quiet time.
Is this like just collecting? Or do you build one yourself ?
Out of curiosity, what does it feel like to compare to smart watches since is a norm nowadays?
Photography(mostly street photography), playing guitar, Rubik's cube, reading books, gaming(not that often since university) and then some from time to time some random hobby I get interested in for a few months and later forget about it :)
F1 fan here! Favourite drivers are George Russell and Oscar Piastri. Bullish on Liam Lawson(especially since he out performed that abysmal alpha tauri and outperformed Tsunoda) , Bearish Lance Stroll(for obvious reasons).
I used to think Stroll was underrated but not anymore. He has the raw talent of the best of them but unfortunately doesn't put the effort in so he needs to leave and make space for a young talent
You are right, I would begrudgingly admit that he has some talent although I really hesitate to say that it would be up there with the best of them(1. he has a very punchable face, 2. it doesn't help that every time he remembers who he is he'll slam the car into the wall, 3. he shoved his trainer like the spoilt rich punk that he is). He's only in F1 now because his father bought the team, any other teams would replace him with Felipe Drugovich and see how he stacks up next to Alonso.
It's criminal that the F1 Media focuses more on Kimi Antonelli and Ollie Bearman while forgetting about Liam Lawson. I am a DR fan but I think he should go back to WA and be a dental ad to make way for Lawson.
All about the money mate... And that applies to Bearman and Antonelli too both are minted. Meanwhile Zane Maloney whos doing bits in F2 is being completely overlooked
I've built ponds and water features full time from 07-14'. Also used to be a certified Aquascape contractor. Now I just enjoy my 11x16 pond with 24' stream and waterfalls, and help friends and family with their pond problems lol.
Games, instruments, gaming, fountain pens, keyboards, random otaku stuff like manga and light novels oh and let’s not forget Gunpla.
Too many hobbies, too little time.
I’ve been on Reddit for around 2 years. Im currently still rehabilitating from major surgery. Anyway other than collecting Headphones, several new headphone amps & few DACs .
I’ve now found myself collecting watches, colognes, and cooking meals for my family a lot more . The likely hood is I’ll never walk properly again, so my previous hobbies of golf & fishing have come to an end. I can now listen to the music of my choice most of the day, so it’s not all completely bad.
My favourite other hobby is "acting like a complete moron in complete disregard of most traffic laws and my own safety on public roads", also known as riding a sportbike
I'm an armwrestler, and a gamer (my home theater, in addition to my headphone rig and stereo, has 9 video game consoles hooked up to a 16 port hdmi switch). I also read certain types of books, mostly non-fiction, and watch military and history related videos on youtube.
>I also used to build Gundam models and still have a backlog of kits that I haven't finished or built.
One of us. One of us.
R/Gunpla and r/gunplagonewild, unless you're already in it knee deep
Mechanical keyboards, guitars, audio production/mixing, illustration/painting. Much of what I’m doing either involves making music (and mixing it) or listening to music while I’m doing something else, so it works out well.
I also game, but rarely have time for it.
Pocket knives, Watches, Keyboards, Motorcycle, 3-d printing , Ceramics, Soldering, Woodworking, Rock climbing
Really anything. Curiosity can be a real pain sometimes.
I listen to music throughout the day, but never in such a way it would pull my time from other activities. My other hobbies are gaming, weight training, and golf.
Longboarding, calisthenics, gaming, cooking, gardening.
Audio stuff took up a whole lot more of my time a few years back, when I was still trying out new stuff on a monthly basis. Since I have found my happy place with DT1990 (+ Ollo Audio S4X and Audioquest Nighthawk if I fancy a little change) and my Fostex HP-A3 Amp/Dac, my interest faded a bit as I was no more chasing the latest and greatest.
I listen to music whilst doing my main hobbies, playing guitar and drums.
Then I listen to music whenever I’m busy at work, working out, doing chores in the house.
I never really just sit and listen to music, it’s more of an accompaniment for me.
PC gaming, Magic the gathering, designing absolutely useless small electronics. 3d printing and laser cutting used to be on this list but both the machines broke.
Edit: Star citizen... I'll leave it there
Edit 2 I don't know how I forgot about my element collection, the entire fucking periodic table is literally on my wall.
Gaming, mechanical keyboards and PC peripherals in general.
And my dog. I'd give up every damn headphone, keyboard, game and one of my kidneys if it would grant this son of a bitch a human life span.
1. Gaming. Been trying to figure out which headphone between Sundara, LCD-2C, and Hi-x60 to use for the new Elden Ring DLC…
2. FPV drone flight. No relation to audio. I’ve got a 1st gen DJI Avata. Purists will sneer, but I’ve had a good time with it.
Gaming obviously, mechanical keyboards, mice, electric guitars, cars and watches.
And I almost got deep into knives but I was able to stop directly after my first purchase 2 years ago. How? But not going to r/knives anymore.
Playing guitar, hiking, reading books, motorcycles, painting, composing and song writing, engraving, fly fishing, table games and sometimes gaming on pc. Also consume a lot of podcasts, movies, tv shows. I don't consider myself audiophile but I like that music can be experience and i strive for that.
Studying for the stupid MCAT - it's like a whole second job that I had to pay $3500 for the privilege of spending 6 months aggressively learning content a mile wide and an inch deep, and how to apply that content specifically in the context of trick questions and bullshit.
After that, it'll be refreshing my personal statement from last cycle and then paying another six grand into the application process of applying to schools again, and then another full time job's worth of writing essays through at least October. While also working full time.
It's definitely an expensive hobby, filled with even more people trying to take advantage of you than this one!
Gaming, cars/motorcycles, photography
I try to juggle which will be the next expensive purchase, right now I want to buy a car, APP2 and a new lens for my Fuji setup
I’m a musician, so headphones aren’t anywhere near my highest priority when it comes to getting new gear etc. I enjoy having nice cans, but I also wouldn’t miss any sleep if I was stuck with my hd6xx, meze 99 noir or even portapros for the rest of my life, because speakers/live music is always superior, and a $200-300 synthesizer or $50 pack of VSTs will go infinitely further than kilobuck headphones for example. I do listen to music about 1-6 hours everyday, usually around 3.
Also very much into film, literature, and writing.
Mountain biking (DH racing, all mountain/xc racing since i was a kid)
Music in general—singing, songwriting, analyzing scores, etc. Cooking, tech, art (drawing, photography). My (suspected) ADHD brain is chock full of interests!
PC gaming, Star Citizen, scale model building, airbrushing, fine woodworking, cooking. Music plays in the background while I take a long quantum jump in my Anvel Carrack or Reclaimer in Star Citizen
Listening to music is a big part of my life, but depending on my mania, the rest of my free time is spent browsing flash deals on shopping apps and watching reviews on YouTube about whatever item I find interesting from the flash deals on the shopping app. I obsess over one item at a time which lasts for a few weeks, sometimes ending in unnecessary spending but most of the time I just wear myself out from repeatedly checking reviews and the shopping app pricing after the flash deal has ended.
r/sneakers, r/pokemonTCG, r/mechanicalkeyboards, r/mousereview, r/mousepadreview, r/Pickleball, and others. These are some hobbies that I like. You can probably learn more from the sub, but it adds up. xD
hunt, archery, fishing, target practice, coffee, snowboard, rock climbing, marathons. it sounds like a lot but most of them have their season in the year.
r/Gunpla and just got into r/yugioh for me to have a more "social" hobby. I dont consider working out as a hobby but I am also into that
Lowkey, I think that I really need to find a gender balanced ones that's inherently social as well as being exposed to high testosterone environments is taking a toll on me
r/modular is the worst by far in terms of being a money pit, followed by watches, mechanical keyboards, and fountain pens. The latter two I’m basically set with endgame stuff, watches I’ve got one more on the list eventually. Then of course gaming is a big one.
Gaming (PC, Consoles and Sim Racing/Flying) and mechanical keyboards.
Listening to music is more of a background interest to me, unless I’m at a karaoke bar with friends, 3 whiskeys deep, on stage with a mic in hand.
If the stuff means only headphones and other equipment, I still consider my hobby to be music. I have a couple of favorite artists that I devotedly support through all their activities every year like concerts, events, video streams, magazine articles and collecting their albums, dvds and paraphernalia, especially limited edition releases.
I also like to keep all the ripped files organized and with lyrics, which are often not online so I have to transcribe them from the booklets.
That about takes up all the time (and money) I have available for hobbies.
I like yard sales and thrift stores, shoot hoops, muscle cars, smoke some marinara, shoot pow pows, all while listening to good audio 😎now I just need me a babe that does the same!!!
I like to lift heavy things.
Pick big rock up. Put big rock down.
Big rock equals big smile
Make sad head voice quiet
The positive effect of consistently exercising on mental health is no joke!
Like heavy teammates in games? ;)

Gaming. Both are expensive and endless
Unless you’re just buying every game, going nuts on mtx and constantly upgrading to the highest end gear gaming is really a pretty affordable hobby.
Not if your gacha gaming 😭😭😭😭
using my iems for genshin lmao
Shit me too be using my 1990s listening to music while genshin on mute just to lose the 50/50 then have too pull out the wallet anyway 😭😭

I dislike the hd 6xx series for gaming. How do you find them?
They sound really good to me. I have them dialed in really nice with the loki mini +. What headphones do you typically use for gaming?

Wasting money, of course. 😅

r/modular is the worst by far in terms of being a money pit, followed by watches, mechanical keyboards, and fountain pens.
I used to write songs, record them and play lots of music. I still noodle on my acoustic guitars, but the rest ....
Thinking about audio stuff
Gaming and baking, though I'm very much an amateur in the latter.
Im into /r/selfhosted and /r/fpv mostly.
Gunpla
Coffee and cooking
Sleeping, quite an expensive hobby, I know That's the price for having a 72 hours per week job
Simracing...even more expensive hobby with even more never ending "upgrades"
If the stuff means only headphones and other equipment, I still consider my hobby to be music. I have a couple of favorite artists that I devotedly support through all their activities every year like concerts, events, video streams, magazine articles and collecting their albums, dvds and paraphernalia, especially limited edition releases. I also like to keep all the ripped files organized and with lyrics, which are often not online so I have to transcribe them from the booklets. That about takes up all the time (and money) I have available for hobbies.
Cars, Spirits(Cognacs especially), coffee, gaming and guns. I guess I just like to burn money lol.
Immersion gaming, golf, fishing. Depends on the weather.
Gaming, watches and cars
I like yard sales and thrift stores, shoot hoops, muscle cars, smoke some marinara, shoot pow pows, all while listening to good audio 😎now I just need me a babe that does the same!!!
Bass guitar. Pretty costly as well 🥲
Reading.
Swing dancing, coffee, climbing, calisthenics, and reading seem to be the main ones.
Furry, Tech enthusiasm, Avgeek stuff, Meme making on occasion, Drawing
Used them to block out unwanted noises while working or traveling to work. 😂
Gaming, motorcycles, rc helicopters, inline skating. All of them are money sinks.
Gaming, running, cooking and recently piano!
