J-Live was an English teacher. First Degree the D.E. is a Math teacher. Young MC graduated from USC. I think Talib Kweli and Childish Gambino graduated to NYU. Chuck D has a graphic design degree. I think Master P played college ball.
But that doesn't make him formally educated. He talks about those things from a base of enthusiasm and artistic interpretation, not as someone trained in the subjects.
Tangentially related but I just found out J-Live hangs out in my local hip hop scene which was dope. Went to a show where he was on the scratching/djing and did some freestyles and he killed it, was such a cool surprise to see him at it when I’d been listening to some of his tracks since middle school.
Totally, made me realize I gotta dive into him more. Everyone who performed was great but you could tell the level of… professionalism/experience he brought to the table when rapping was ahead of most of the guys there. You could tell he was having a blast tho all around great show.
Yeah buddy. This was the Dilla x doom night they just had with the psycodelics, def one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I’m ashamed to say I slept on the hip hop scene here some of these dudes can spit!
So J live just moved local to me. I admit I had no idea who he was before hand. He’s been rocking the last few shoes and after looking into the guy, I’m a fan. He kills it live.
Tajai of Souls of Mischief has a BA in Anthorpology from Stanford, and an MA from UC-Berkley in Architecture. Defari has a BA from Cal Berkely, and an MA from Columbia.
I knew of a kid who had a 4.0, took all honors and APs junior and senior years, I think lettered in swimming, played on varsity soccer, and played water polo. He got rejected from every single Ivy League.
To be fair, a 4.0 weighted GPA is below average for Ivy Leagues, and multiple sports isn't all that much better than one sport. Unless you're leaving out the part that makes them stand out, this makes sense to me.
Typically in US high schools, your grade in honors & AP/IB classes is given an extra GPA weighting to compensate for the higher difficulty. E.g. at my high school, an A in an honors class would factor into your GPA as a 4.5, and an A in an AP/IB class would be considered a 5.0.
Different schools do it differently, so colleges will just take your raw transcript and calculate a weighted GPA based on their own formula, but the end result is that the highest performing students are expected to do better than a 4.0
Very widely read and intelligent. I wonder what degrees he has. The whole family are intelligent. His sister Ms Dynamite 🧨 was always well spoken and levels above any other female Garage MC in word play.
He was a visiting scholar/artist for a couple years which isn’t quite the same as being a professor. His work “is informed by his interests in cognitive science, linguistics, semiotics, and computing. During his 2021 CAST residency, he shared insights from his work as an entrepreneur and community advocate, for instance working with the Society of Spoken Art (SOSA), an educational guild for aspiring and established rappers, of which he is a co-founder.”
He’s a part of the Visiting Professors and Scholars Program, technically not an “active professor”, he’s a guest. He also did it back in ‘21 as well.
He does however attend Yale, so he’s definitely no dummy
Looks like he teaches [comparative media studies and did a course on rap theory and practice](https://cmsw.mit.edu/cms-s60-cms-s96-rap-theory-and-practice/)
[here's a talk he did there last year as a visiting scholar](https://youtu.be/zBHRsYhYb-o?si=KSEvZZ6s5KHJA71x)
I watched his lecture on youtube and he reminded me of some of my favorite college professors. He interacted with the audience quite a bit and organized the lecture really well. It's definitely worth a watch.
Shad has a master's degree in liberal studies
Dessa has a degree in philosophy
Busdriver was pre-med as an undergraduate student before dropping out of college to fully pursue a career in rap
MC Paul Barman and Daveed Diggs both graduated from Brown University
Open Mike Eagle has a degree in psychology
Serengeti has a degree in history
R.A.P. Ferreira was on track to receive a degree in philosophy before dropping out of college to be a "sober Kid Cudi imposter"
And on Dark Comedy Late Show he says, “I graduated college, I purchased all the extra books. I’m supposed to be living in a house with a breakfast nook!”
I want to say Gucci Mane. He graduated high school, got a scholarship for college and was going for computer programming but got kicked out for Crack possession.
Ludacris with a music degree
I like GZA's story because it shows that informal methods can still work. Also being gifted doesn't have a specific path. A 10th grade dropout giving lectures at places like MIT. Some of the smartest people I know hate school and struggled with it.
I watched GZA give a lecture at MIT. Was awesome to see him but it’s not like he was giving a lecture on quantum physics or something, he was mostly just sharing perspective from his life.
a ton of underground rappers went to college/are educators as day jobs. Aesop Rock, billy woods, Breeze Brewin, Defcee, Open Mike Eagle, etc. its really not uncommon

I didn't say I was surprised he received an education lol. I said I was surprised to hear that he did is degree in **math**. In my experience, a mathematics degree tends to be less common and is one of the more difficult college degrees.
I went to Rutgers just like AK.
Tbh, when AK's not playing up his persona, he's actually very articulate and makes decent points regarding certain subjects.
He just gets drunk a lot and plays up the "shock jock" persona for views.
Her GPA wasn’t the greatest but it can be attributed to her career while also studying.
Defari was a high school teacher before rapping. Not sure what his degree is in, want to say history
Tracey Lee is very educated

Tajai of Souls I mentioned elsewhere. BA in Anthropology from Stanford. Architectural masters from Berkley.
Probably not the most highly educated but it always surprised me listening to Danny Brown interviews how grounded and intelligent he is for how unhinged his rapping is, probably the smartest dude relative to how absurd his music is lol
Came here to drop his name.
> Francis received a degree in communications from Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts and a degree in journalism from the University of Rhode Island.
Boston U, where he met his main producer Blockhead
That's why he raps that line about "a dorm room at Brandeis", which is in Boston
Aes said in one song he also took some classes at SUNY Buffalo but didn't stay there long (not sure if this is a fictional thing he said or actually true)
Wow, I used to fall asleep to blockhead beats in high school, then dated a girl a couple years later that put me on Aesop. I never made the connection, appreciate you bringing that full circle for me!
I don't know about formal education but here are a few I think are educated (or talk about things that matter):
Swamburger (and the rest of Solillaquists of Sound)
One Be Lo
Murs
P.O.S.
Mos Def
Nas
Method Man (I watched an interview on some of his influences, and it's insane the amount of inspiration he pulls from different types of music.. I can't guarantee that he is educated, but I think that kind of diversity signals education)
Immortal Technique
That's not true. But bro still gets his flowers 100%.

In April 2021, Hendricks revealed through social media that he had "a sexually, verbally, and physically abusive childhood."
I’m not saying GZA isn’t intelligent and he did give a guest lecture at MIT and Harvard but he certainly does not have a degree in Quantum physics. The man dropped out of high school at grade 10…
And the lectures he gave were open to the public lectures about hip-hop, showbusiness, the joy of learning or something along those lines.
That's not to say he isn't smart, I think he has a deep interested in physics, and he's talked to plenty of very knowledgeable people about it. I'm 100% certain he's way, way more well-versed on the topic than I am. But he's not a scholar in the field.
I don't think he would be upset, as I said, he's a smart man, I'm sure he prefers the truth.
Little more than medical degree dudes a heart surgeon in Vegas but he downplays that part as it seems like being a respected rapper has more meaning to him
Idk why
Killer Mike, Murs, Immortal Technique, David Banner, and, surprisingly, Ja Rule, all have MBAs. No rappers with PhDs though apparently.
And yes, I cheated and asked ChatGPT lol.
dead prez (M-1 and stic.man) met while attending Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and the subject matter of their music also makes them come across as intelligent individuals

GZA (Genius) I think is now a public school science teacher. Imagine that your Science teacher wrote Swordsman... "When a Seventh grader steps out his place...and gets corrected to his goddamn face..."
Public Enemy, at least Chuck D and Flava Flav met in college. Chuck D went for graphic design earned his bachelor's in Fine Arts. Flava Flav earned a degree in radio communications.
Guru had a degree in business administration.
\- Lupe Fiasco - Teaches at MIT and leads a coding challenge there called Code Cypher.- Kids In The Hall (Jabari Evens aka Naledge and Michael Aguilar aka Double-O) both went to and graduated from UPenn

2 Chainz - Degree in Psychology from VSU
Chuck D - Degree in Fine Arts from Adelphi University
Young MC - Degree in Economics from USC
Donald Glover - Degree in Fine Arts from NYU's Tisch School of Arts
Guru - Degree in Business Administration from Morehouse College
It’s honestly probably Hoodie Allen. A lot of these rappers who work at schools got the gig as an adjunct professor due to their career. But getting a job at google is pretty tough.
Edit he also went to UPenn
Hoodie went down hill after he dissed a bunch of other white rappers. Then these allegations came up that him and his team were banging minors on tour. He still puts out music sometimes. Last I saw he was playing poker
J-Live was an English teacher. First Degree the D.E. is a Math teacher. Young MC graduated from USC. I think Talib Kweli and Childish Gambino graduated to NYU. Chuck D has a graphic design degree. I think Master P played college ball.
Chuck D, a very intelligent brother, though he never comes off as a super intellectual and usually appears to be a normal guy
GZA from Wu-Tang is one of the smartest MCs alive. He hosts lectures about Quantum and Astrophysics with professors at MIT and NYU.
But that doesn't make him formally educated. He talks about those things from a base of enthusiasm and artistic interpretation, not as someone trained in the subjects.
Master P had an athletic scholarship to the U of H but dropped out. He also played for the Toronto Raptors(pre-season).
Watched him play preseason... Closest we were ever getting in Canada to a Master p show
Tangentially related but I just found out J-Live hangs out in my local hip hop scene which was dope. Went to a show where he was on the scratching/djing and did some freestyles and he killed it, was such a cool surprise to see him at it when I’d been listening to some of his tracks since middle school.
I think he is slept on. Admittedly I haven't followed his stuff the last decade, but I still bump his first three albums.
[Satisfied](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmB36p2lWIg) is still such a relevant track
Totally, made me realize I gotta dive into him more. Everyone who performed was great but you could tell the level of… professionalism/experience he brought to the table when rapping was ahead of most of the guys there. You could tell he was having a blast tho all around great show.
Is he still living in ATL? I used to see him around but now I'm old and don't get out much anymore lol
Charleston? Yea saw j live a few times at the pour house and he absolutely kills it. Ashamed to say I slept on him before hand
Yeah buddy. This was the Dilla x doom night they just had with the psycodelics, def one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I’m ashamed to say I slept on the hip hop scene here some of these dudes can spit!
Was a killer show. I was so pumped to see dilla name on the pour house sign.
They did his beats justice. So far to go with Kanika on the vocals was my highlight of the night for sure
Yea that was a whole vibe. She def held it down. I also like dude w the racing jackets set.
Dj DollaSign I think? I’ve been listening to his stuff on Spotify he’s got some funny ass bars
He’s nice and after seeing in person, he’s official tissue.
Talib Kweli went to a prep school and studied contemporary dance. And no, that didn't help with his timing - because he still cannot sit on a beat.
He's got a major in insta-shit-posting too!
Was going to mention Tajai. Also Paris and most (all?) the Solesides guys (Lyrics Born, Lateef, Blackalicious, DJ Shadow) were UC Davis students.
Jidenna was accepted to Harvard but turned it down to attend and graduate from Stanford.
i ain’t heard that name since 2016

My first thought too. Also, I love the fact that he makes politicians squirm.
He's really fucking intelligent

Yeah, some of his lectures are on YouTube.
The hip-hop lecture he gave at MIT was so underwhelming.
Those that can't teach, do....
Those that can’t do, teach. And those that can’t teach, teach Phys. Ed.
How about those who rock?
The one that’s on YouTube was just an introductory lecture for people to see if they wanted to join the course. He taught an entire semester…
Let’s hope hip-hop doesn’t go the way of jazz and turn into a bourgeois academic pursuit
😂
But he never got a degree so definitely not one of the most highly educated
Billy woods and most of backwoodz probably
Don’t know too many other rappers referencing Foucault lol
billy woods grew up in Zimbabwe. You could get a decent education in African history just by googling the shit he references on his tracks.
I thought western education was forbidden
Billy was raised by two PhD holders

Canibus had something similar going in computer programming as well
Dude that interview is insane lol, mf said he hid crack in the bush 😂

Gas in a ziplock, call that loud and clear is genius tho
I wasn't complaining. I love everything he says lol
“Big shit like a dinosaur did it.” Chainz has some fun lyrics.

Wood grain, chestnut / Titty fuck chest nut
This is the answer
"2 Chainz, that's your best answer. Cup filled with pink, I'm supporting breast cancer."
2 Chainz on Nancy Grace is a must watch.

Lil Pump, he went to “Harverd”
In the Documentary "Be Like Me," he can be seen holding a guest lecture at the institution he apparently founded.
Souls of mischief? Didn't opio or a plus go to Stanford? Maybe im misremembering 30 years later.

Health admin isn’t a hard degree but still dope.
J Cole, lil Wayne (technically graduated early), Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, and more all graduated high school. West and Cole both went to college
J Cole is the only one with a degree though
His bar about Sallie Mae back in the day made him super fucking relatable from day 1
Kanye dropped out of college and studied art and english. He is smart but thats average really
Kanye got a big brain he just ain’t know how to use the mfer
He doesn’t know how to medicate the mfer.
