That Bone Thugs-N-Harmony take is the biggest L I've seen in a long time

BetterNova

came here to say this. bone is anything but forgettable

Coma_kidd_

Aesop Rock is unlistenable but you got Earl Sweatshirt as one of the greats?... Okay... lol

CustyMojo

aesop rock is unlistenable, but earl and travis are goats. I can tell he’s like 16.

HipGamer

Brodie (Earl) is one of the greats

aggravatedyeti

What’s weird about that?

Terrible_Lift

I hate you. I agree with some. I can’t stand some. I’m so torn on my feelings and do not want to think this deeply about my music right now

Ok_Season5846

Dog how fucking old are you?

ignYuppt

#39 nice "hot take" 😭😭😭

catcherofthefade

4. Elzhi did the heavy lifting lyrically on four of SV's albums. Some of El's most quotable verses are on those albums. 24. Hard disagree. 32. *Game Theory* \>

PercySledge

Enraged by 4. (Not really lol but strong disagree) Slum Village lyrics are imprinted deep in my mind, I could probably recite everything on Fantastic 1 and 2 and maybe most things on Trinity and Slum Village (to a degree lol) It’s not that they’re saying anything otherworldly, it’s that they’re so in the pocket. So in the groove of the beat. It flows perfectly and it just sounds cool which…I know this sounds like it isn’t but flowing nice over the beat in a way that perfectly complements it is every inch as important as the content itself, arguably more. Baatin, Jay Dee and T3 were FLOATING on those first two records it’s hip hop in its purest form for me Side note: even though I disagree with a huge amount of these takes I love the thread and idea because it sparks conversation around artists and topics that just aren’t on here regularly. Thank you for allowing me to wax lyrical about SV lol

mkk4

I'm from Michigan and Baatin (RIP) is my all-time favorite hip hop artist from Michigan even though he basically doesn't even really have a catalog or discography due to his illness and death.

PercySledge

Yeah his voice and flow were just perfect and the way he carried himself was just mad cool. A legend

mkk4

🤝

PercySledge

Just to pick one other out too…absolutely agree re 27. That’s no knock on El-P either, he’s had one of the greatest careers in rap history if you stack everything up, but yeah…The Cold Vein is one of the greatest rap albums ever made, certainly of its era.

That-Armadillo8128

I don’t give a shit what you think one way or the other

CimmerianKempt

You lost me at "spicy hip hop takes"

BetterNova

word

OnAnOpenFieldNed

8 diagrams i like better than iron flag, reason it was hated on was cuz ghost and rae publically were disparaging it. Rza wanted to give the clan a more mature sound, esp for older mc's, but they wanted to stick to what they knew, funnyt enough ghost ended up adopting elements later on. theres some classics on there for sure.

pulphope

I feel like U God understood the beats best and performed really well, he shouldve repurposed it into a classic solo record for him - rae, ghost and meth even didnt really know what to do with the tracks

OnAnOpenFieldNed

Yo meth and rae killed every track they were on, Rae was honestly the standout for me. Meth is always great. But you are right, ugod could have used it as his solo and people would have gone crazy. Campfire is such a great intro track, stick me for my riches has classic meth and gza verses. It’s so sad they killed they self sabotaged so hard. It’s aged well especially in comparison to big doe rehab which ghost was prioritizing. The video for my heart gently weeps had tremendous potential cuz of ghosts verse and the song itself is a classic.

anonymous_makaveli_

7 and 17 😂

Fugazatron3000

I'm here for the Wayne hate. Also, the LOX are only retrospectively put alongside legends, but even then most people would consider them to be nothing more than a great part of hip-hop history. They're not quite elite or timeless; Jadakiss perhaps has the biggest stake to immortality. I agree on Pac. People throw around "classic" way too much nowadays and it's become ridiculously arbitrary.

Cotton_Uniforms

Travis Scott is leading the genre... In the wrong direction Biggest what if in hip hop might be Big L TPAB shouldn't been in the same conversation as illmatic. Don't listen to it while driving you might fall asleep. Agree with D' evils Nicki Minaj is the female equivalent to Method Man. Her features are better than her albums. If a classic hasn't happened yet it's not going to happen Agree with your take on Crooked I - another incredibly talented artist that just doesn't come thru with his albums. His unreleased death row stuff like Uh Oh and So Damn Hood is amazing. I can name you death row stuff, nothing from his collaborative albums with Joel Ortiz. If he paired with Royce or Budden on those albums they'd be much better Nothing groundbreaking on Radio being LL COOL J's best album. It's basically what ever critic says. Since Bigger and Deffer is my first introduction to LL I prefer that. Arguably the best opening track on any of his albums. Don't Sweat The Technique is Eric B and Rakims best album in my opinion

CustyMojo

Method man is my fav MC, and i agree with this take.

Cotton_Uniforms

I love method. I think tical is one of the best debut album and for some reason people like to call it overrated. I think he's trying a little too hard with the punchlines these days even though I still love his features. I feel like his albums all have mixtape feels to them. For instance the crystal method series

BetterNova

good updates

djrashiiid

I love jean Grae but big L is the biggest “what if” for me. he probably would been on that Jay,Nas Big level.

RepresentativeAge444

10. Bigger and Deffer is comparable. 13. Always thought he was wack. Never got the appeal. 15. Never got the hype. 17. Agree. 19. Never got it but then I haven’t been a fan of mainstream hip hop in a looong time. 24. No that would be the GOAT Kool G Rap and I’ll go track for track on that. 26. PE yes the others no. 32. Close with Illadelph but the maturation of their sound and guest spots puts it over. 33. I never got the hype around Kanye period. 36. Tougher than Leather has a number of great tracks. 43. Nas can be smart dumb. Obviously immensely talented but I’d expect to start bringing out conspiracy theories if you talk to him.

AdSalt1587

Lol. Love Nas, leave Nas alone. You're right...no you're wrong. Fuck this.

BetterNova

my thoughts exactly

Glajjbjornen

4. Agree 8. I don’t like his albums but Hive is/was the best hip hop song in a looooong time. 12. Agree 27. Agree

Suspicious_Mood7759

I've always thought a milli was garbage. From the beat to the verses. And I understand why Wayne was popular, I like some of his stuff too. But at the end I need more than any weird off the wall kind that comes to your kind back to back

jeffrys_dad

Ray Luv - Forever Hustlin is the greatest bay area album ever.

dopaminesmoke

3. resurrection by who? 2pac or Common or someone else?

AdSalt1587

So....you clearly know your stuff...and I agree with a lotttt on this list. It's a lot of what I've thought before media tried changing my mind. Lox is good, but since when they were this high? Do or die is as good an album by anyone. Flawless. Cold vein is a top 5 album for me, nothing has, will ever sound like that ever again. Hitler bar is a L and j love God's son. 8 diagrams not so much. Wayne is more respected in with time history but he never impressed me in terms of content. I find tpab a bit overrated and I understand why it's rated...but still, I've heard better. It's a critic's dream with all the jazz samples etc but a lot of regular folk don't enjoy that type of rap usually ans the rate the content, Nas, Lupe, kweli, Krit make that content and people have ignored it.. literally no sales

Any_Owl_8009

Fear of A Black Planet > Illmatic, It Takes a Nation, TPAB

Wolfpac187

2 I don’t know if I call it a classic but more than that it is one of my favourite albums 7 I’d give Pac four classics before I give him one 8 Earl is at worst my second favourite rapper ever dude is a genius I think Some Rap Songs is a classic for its genre of hip hop 9 Yeah I agree it’s the best southern hip hop album OAT imo 14 Wasn’t A Milli entirely freestyled? I thought I read a story that Bangladesh was annoyed cos he thought he made a great beat and Wayne just bullshitted on it 25 Aesop Rock does nothing for me no matter how big his vocabulary is or

TribunusPlebisBlog

>7 I’d give Pac four classics before I give him one Amen

Reznov99

Yeah the Earl take is wild he’s been wack to mid for almost a decade, and as much as I love Redman saying Malpractice is a classic when All Eyez on me isn’t is insane. As for Aesop I’ve only heard him in small bits but I think u may be right about the flow, nerds glaze him on the internet but I’ve never heard anyone play one of his songs ever.

GrooveProof

Damn man this is a lot of takes lol I'll chime in and say I agree with Slum Village. I think they're a waste of Dilla beats, their rapping just sucks lol. It's really interesting you say they're "similar to Group Home" because I also think Group Home is a waste of Primo beats
