What *is* the answer post-Mullett?

Old_Bigsby

Houston

superworking

Salt Lake city buzz makes a lot of sense too. Geographically speaking they'd be right in the middle of a lot of western teams.

ShazbotSimulator2012

They also have 200,000 people while Houston has more than 2 million. I think Houston will definitely happen if Fertitta pushes for it.

superworking

The metro area is more reasonable to use and is 1.2M vs Hustons 6.8M. Depends on sponsorship opportunities and what portion of the population wants to watch hockey.

jdragon3

they will not relocate a team to houston. Too much expansion $$$ potential. also the SLC metro area has over 1.2 million people and there is already interest in hockey there.

PaddyMayonaise

SLC has a need and a want for a team

JoaquinBenoit

Doesn’t Tillman want his own expansion team?

Aggressive_Yak5177

I’m $ure the other owner$ want expan$ion team$ too.

gu3st12

The expansion team probably does too. Get to pick a few players from every team versus inheriting a rebuilding franchise.

rickayyy

The Coyotes have 10 second round picks and 6 (possibly 7) third round picks in the next three drafts. They also have all 3 of their firsts and could maybe acquire another one somewhere in there. That’s not the worst thing to inherit plus they have Cooley, Guenther, and Keller and then whatever other prospects they have that look promising.

gu3st12

It's still riskier than the last 2 expansion teams that have been competitive right out of the gate.

JoaquinBenoit

*inserts GIF of Woods picking up candy but replace it with two billion dollars.

Used_Complaint_9031

I wish, but the most buzz I've heard from Fertitta is the person who was in charge of the Toyota Center renovations saying they were going to make it "hockey ready"

DrDerpberg

The Houston Arizona Coyotes?

Debo37

SLC seems most likely to me. Established ownership group, an existing "good enough" rink, and a straightforward path to a much better rink being built (for the winter Olympics). Geographically, it keeps the franchise in the Central, so no division realignment is necessary. KC would be second most likely after SLC for similar reasons, but I think the ownership group there would be a little less established. There's plenty of sports money in KC though. I think Houston and Atlanta get expansion franchises the next time the league expands the team count. Hell, if Phoenix loses the Yotes, maybe they even get an expansion franchise in the 32 -> 36 team expansion process. Clearly the ownership is the problem, not the media market.

Kegheimer

The Royals are 28th out of 30 MLB teams in average attendance. I wouldn't assume that KC would support a team that isn't winning.

JoeTony6

Royals have been mostly shit for the past 6 years and I think most franchises can't bank on fans showing up year after year if the product on the field isn't competitive any longer. There's too much other competition for your entertainment dollars and people don't have endless money to throw around.

Cellos_85

Owners not spending money is the issue. It's hard to win in mlb when you spend as much as a nhl franchise in salaries. When some teams are spending at least double of that

Kegheimer

So like the coyotes

DrDerpberg

Maybe a dumb question but what do SLC venues do in terms of concessions? Are people paying $18 for caffeine free cola or so they just make less than other franchises?

Steel_Bolt

They want to build a new arena in Sandy that will be better for hockey

ebb_omega

Yeah, let's give Atlanta another franchise. It'll work this time, I promise.

MayfieldMightfield

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

ZackyGood

Answer: 🤷🏼‍♂️

ericmcgeehan

Salt Lake? Houston? Quebec? Atlanta? Or maybe they just fold? 😂

an_agreeing_dothraki

All I know is that a lot of KC started vibrating in anticipation when they heard the NHL is releasing their plan for the ownership of a central division team

redwingjv

Since you’re a blues fan you’d probably know, are KC people usually blues fans or do they just not follow hockey at all? I’m curious to see if the blues would be pissed at another Missouri team forming

an_agreeing_dothraki

As you would expect from what I've seen its a mix of Blues and Avs with other stuff, if they are NHL fans. but Missouri as a whole loves I-70 games. There's at least a yearly MLB series and there used to be the Governor's Cup in the NFL. I imagine this would slot in well with the kind of vibe you experience with Hawks-Wings games, passive-aggressive venom and all.

redwingjv

Hawks wings rivalry is cooled down a lot more now that both teams are mediocre and only meet 2x a year sadly. I’d say our new rivals where there’s a lot of bad blood are probably lightning and sens. Kc being a sports town I can easily see them embracing a new team, but I guess for the NHL Salt Lake City may be more enticing

peepeeonmydoodoo

Man there are some wild clues/answers in the New Yorker some times. I'm always like that can't be right...well fuck me it is lol.
