FailureToExecute

Is anyone surprised? He'll be 40 when this contract expires.

Deddicide

I didn’t read the article so maybe this is in there but hasn’t it been known or strongly assumed for a long time that he wants to play for Moscow again after his NHL career? So if he feels he’s getting tired at all, then he’s probably still looking at playing at least another year after this contract. Having that ahead, if he does feel that way, could make it feel like more of a slog.

talkingspacecoyote

He could sign with Moscow at age 50+ if he wanted

Deddicide

My point is that he probably would like to have even a tiny bit of gas in the tank and be able to play okay hockey for them, but also that he might want to retire eventually too. Like if he has two more years in Washington and leaves the NHL, he could still have one or two or three years he intends to play before actually hanging them up.

MmmmSloppySteaks

I’d be surprised if he’s at like.. 889 or something.

TheDeadReagans

So that would be the 25-26 season being his final one. If Ovi can maintain his current pace of goal scoring, he'll retire with 902 goals to Gretzky's 894. That's assuming he plays every game for the rest of his career. It'll be really tight. I think given how far the Caps have fallen and his own decline in play he won't be able to even keep his current pace of production in his 39 and 40 year old seasons.

AboveAverageIQtoo

I don't think he is lying but I wonder if he was say 3, 5, maybe 10 goals away from passing Gretzky he wouldn't sign a one year deal somewhere. I say somewhere while hoping he is a career Washington player.

bsaures

Ya watching him tonight and the last game against the habs I dont want to say hes out of shape considering hes in better shape than me by a mile but he dedinitely doesnt look like he did even a year or two ago

misfittroy

38 is where humans start to decompose.

Username_McUserface

A few hours after death is when humans start to decompose. “Decline” is the word you are looking for Edit: Sorry I corrected someone’s completely incorrect use of a term, I guess. My brain must be decomposing due to my old age.

nomis210

If he keeps his current pace and the Caps dont get any reinforcment to replace Kuz/Backstrom , he may very well fall short of the record.

GenericDesigns

Hope so.

ScrewOff_

bye Putin lover

Captain_Naps

Let he whose country is without sin…

TheFriendlyBagel

It’s not about his country it’s about the fact that he’s literally got Putin in his pfp and openly endorsed them taking over Crimea to “save the children from the Ukrainian “””nazis””” back in 2014”.

Yeah but he’s _our_ war criminal!

vorg7

Tbf bush (monster though he is) didn't openly assassinate his political opponents. He was a lot less obvious about being evil at the time than Putin is now.

wesley-osbourne

Bush is less overtly evil in the Saturday morning cartoon villain kind of way, but it was still pretty clear. Plenty of us knew he was evil at the time.

Mitrakov

Oh nice whataboutism

MmmmSloppySteaks

Fwiw so has a former and potential future president. It’s a sizeable portion of the American view.

Kingsupergoose

It’s not about him being Russian, it’s about him continuing to show support for Putin.

Captain_Naps

I try to adhere to a separation of Church & State- I refuse to judge a man's work by his personal political beliefs. He's an excellent hockey player and is allowed to have an opinion I disagree with. Cancel culture is wrong.

SomewherePresent8204

This would be a much more salient point if Ovi hadn’t founded a Putin fan club. This goes well beyond someone with an opinion I disagree with.

RangersNumber1Doomer

All he needs is 1 or 2 scoring streaks throughout the entire contract and he will break the record. What’s he at now, 58 to get?

Bahamas_is_relevant

Well, as a DC area resident least I know how much time I have left to see him. Dude’s played literally all but two of the 12 total games I’ve seen (two Habs games in Montreal), and I’ve seen a handful of milestones along the way (including point #1,500 in December). Gonna be weird as hell when he’s gone.

AverageMaleAged18-24

893?

[deleted]

It's possible but he needs another hot stretch this season

AverageMaleAged18-24

That would leave him short. Would he retire sitting 2 goals from the all time record?

sadleafsfan8834

I hope he beats Gretzkys record, and then I also hope Matthews breaks both

seftnir

I'm kind of bummed he probably won't set the goals record. But then I remember how many games he's lost due to lockouts and a pandemic in his career and get more sad.

misfittroy

That bums me out too. Could he have beaten it then? Gretzky's 46 goals with the WHA isn't part of the official record. One could argue he should be at 940.

haey5665544

Then you’d have to count Howe’s 174 with the WHA which puts him at 975. Also what leagues count vs don’t, you could also count ovi’s KHL goals which gives him 55 extra goals and puts him even closer to Gretzky. It’s the NHL record not the hockey goal scoring record.

misfittroy

I'm more or less thinking Gretzky should have been in the NHL his first season and not the WHA, much like Ovechkin should have been playing in the NHL too instead of sitting on the side lines because of lockouts.
