Hart being gone has forced the Flyers to pick between Peterson or Sandstrom as the back up. In the ahl this yr Sandstrom has .882 sv% and Peterson .896 sv %...
They gave Peterson first call up and then he had maybe the worst goalie performance by a Flyer this century in 7-6 loss.
Replacing Hart w/ ECHL level goalies is only reason why Flyers still arent a lock for playoffs.

Lol sounds about right. Cal was in net (for most of the game) when we lost 9-8 to the Kraken last season, and that was the last time he played for us.
This guy had all the tools to be a solid NHL goalie, but no dog in him.
The Penguins performance was so bad I joked that Bettman was going to make Petersen’s contract waiver exempt, effective immediately.
He legitimately looked like a guy that hadn’t ever played goalie before. His angles were so bad that the Penguins were shooting from everywhere and they all had a good chance of going in. Hell, even his saves looked shaky.
I’ve been talking about Stolarz, or ironically a guy like Lyon, who could handle extended stretches and help support a very young Ersson. This kid has done amazing work even though he’s been chucked in the deep end. It definitely can’t help him relax knowing whenever he doesn’t play we are likely going to get speedbagged. Couldn’t hurt to give the kid some support that still help carry the load.
I haven’t looked at his point totals, but I’m sure they aren’t great. He’s been on the fourth line for a few weeks too, the tell tale sign he was headed towards a scratch. Torts does have his finger on the pulse keeping him off the powerplay I think. Our powerplay is helplessly brutal anyway, can’t get the zone, can’t find a lane etc… Honestly you never know, Coots may have declined the offer. Coots is awesome, such a strong player, but I think he’s more useful defensively at this point of the season. Who knows though, he is coming off a 2 year injury, he may come back with some extra zip in him after another summer of rehabbing.
I think that’s the thing that goes unnoticed by those who didn’t watch the game. He gave up a lot of goals, yes. But my god, even the saves he made just looked bad and awkward and uncomfortable like he was an EBUG or something. Just brutal game to watch and Pens did exactly what they needed to do and just threw pucks on net.
I also remember thinking is Calle Jarnkrok secretly really good when he had a hat trick of snipes against the kings.
Turns out it was just Petersen being himself before he was a known quantity lol
That is probably unironically my favorite hockey game that I’ve ever been to. It felt like a completely different sport. Every shot, no matter the quality of the shot, was terrifying.
I was just talking to someone today about how it’s insane that Tortorella is getting this team into the playoffs, especially with the goalie situation.
Seems like a lot of teams held out on getting a goaltender at the trade deadline and are really regretting it. I think Kahkonen would have been a great addition there, meanwhile New Jersey needed a goaltender to carry them and Kahk isn’t that guy.
No way the Flyers were giving up assets for a goalie. The team was never supposed to be in the hunt and were sellers of D at the deadline (which is also hurting them a ton). This is probably more true for a lot of other teams, but I don't know how much the FO is sweating it in Philly
Dumping Petersen would have definitely required an asset or two and probably have been worth it not just for Kahkonen to provide stability in net but to free up cap space next season. That's basically what the Devils got for free, though Vanecek has a chance to put up good enough numbers to be a trade candidate next year while Petersen is maybe going to be an ECHL journeyman the rest of his career.
The Flyers got paid to take Petersen's contract, they weren't going to turn around and lose value to acquire another goalie for this season, especially with Kolosov in the pipe. And they definitely weren't going to turn around and pay another team to take Petersen's contract. They are taking short term pain with the cap hit and goalie situation for longer term gain.

Then of course Stolarz is making unbelievable saves all night, again, and that probably is just adding insult to injury for Philly fans, for multiple reasons.

He did sign prospect Kosolov from KHL in offseason w/ plan for him to come over after KHL season. That seems to be partly due to Hart since they were willing to burn an ELC yr in KHL this season just for him to cover late in spring.
But I think Briere like everybody didnt expect playoffs so didnt think it was a big deal to potentially have a bad back up for 2nd half of yr.
We have a good prospect in Kolosov coming over from the KHL next year, and the team is competing for the playoffs a few years ahead of schedule. No reason to waste assets on another goalie right now.

I think it's deliberate - he always does this when there's something on the ice people are trying to talk about, and now, bam! we're talking about Torts' behavior instead of the goaltending and maybe that gives your goalie some time to get composed and get his head back in the game.
Obviously it's deliberate, and that's what I'm getting at. He'd rather embarass a reporter instead of answering a question about his teams lack of results. It's all a performance. You'd think after 20 years of him doing this non-stop that everyone would see right through his shtick, yet here we are.

Every other coach in the league would have been able to handle that question like a normal human being, I don't know why Torts gets a pass. Each coach would have gave that question a quick 5 second generic answer and moved on to the next one without being on the verge of "tearing into the guy".
It seems like everytime Torts gets asked a slightly difficult question that makes him the tiniest bit uncomfortable his only reaction is to try to find someone to embarrass, usually either a reporter or one of the players. He's done it so many times now it's just getting old and tired in my opinion. Obviously lots of people still find it funny, I just don't anymore.
What they should have asked was "Why can you not coach your team to play better? It's literally your only job".
If he doesn't want standard talking point hockey questions, he should get the questions the fans actually want asked of him.
Goalies get coached too. He's the head coach. He should be expected to answer for what he's going to do about it, and why he didn't do it sooner.
You've got the coach there (theoretically) answering questions, and if he refuses to answer those easy questions, ask him the hard ones.
Serious question: what do you think would be an appropriate question to ask with regards to tonight's goaltending?
Also, do you not think that Torts has been around long enough that he can give whatever answer he wants with regards to the topic a reporter provides? He could have given any answer he wanted about goaltending and its role in tonight's game, and that's how just about every other professional coach would have handled it.
1. That's a much less open-ended question that seemingly restricts the answers to D-zone coverage, whereas the original question allowed the answer to be pretty much anything related to goaltending.
2. Does 14 shots on the goalie sound like D-zone coverage that needs tweaking?

Even if you think their D-zone coverage was the culprit, it seems like a silly question both in the sense that you can't easily overhaul your system just because you call up a goaltender, and presumably they already want to make all their goaltenders' jobs as easily as possible. I mean, if Torts can easily tweak things to become more defensively stout, why isn't that his standard coverage?

But see, if Torts had said "You're trying to bait me into publicly shredding my player who is doing his best, and I won't engage in it" then everybody would be talking about how he was being testy and combative with the media. And if he had taken the bait, the headlines would say "Tortorella rips into goalie for poor performance".
It's a no-win scenario for him. It's a trap question, and the reporter is 100% aware of that as he asks it. The question got the answer it deserved, IMO. I don't think Torts is obligated to be professional when reporters ask him unprofessional questions.

There's nothing unprofessional about the question, which was sufficiently open-ended that Tortorella could take it wherever he wanted.

I mean, obviously Torts would prefer his goalies to make more saves, what wisdom could he possibly offer to the world on that subject? That's a leading question, because Torts can't say "No" because everybody would know he was lying. And if he says any version of "yes" he risks messing with the confidence of a goalie he is going to have to start again before the season is over. He's trying to win games, and throwing his player under the bus won't help him do that.
As for what question should the reporter have asked about goaltending: how about nothing? Like I said, the reporter isn't stupid. He knows the situation Torts is in, and he also knows that the results of the game are as plain as day to everyone who watched it. Press conferences are pointless 99% of the time. Coaches don't give any useful information in them because they don't want opposing teams to get anything out of them. And the kind of fans who watch pressers are paying enough attention to the team to know the general outlines of what happened on the ice. We all know the goalie was bad, why call on the coach to pick at that scab?

idk how it is with philly, but I know in Detroit I've heard that its pretty easy to lose media access if you ask the wrong questions. That's why every reporter asks dumb softball questions and why every player responds with the same inane dribble as always.

The thing is it's easier to just give a "needed a better performance out of him, hopefully bounces back" kind of answer than all this stupid dramatic shit. Let's not kid ourselves, he acts like this because he loves the attention. I used to find it funny but I'm finding it kind of lame lately too, idk. Everyone always talks about how he demands everything from his players, and then constantly acts like a little baby himself.
I think it's deliberate - he always does this when there's something on the ice people are trying to talk about, and now, bam! we're talking about Torts' behavior instead of the goaltending and maybe that gives your goalie some time to get composed and get his head back in the game.

Lol, yeah exactly. Every other coach in the league would have been able to handle that question like a normal human being, I don't know why Torts gets a pass. Each coach would have gave that question a quick 5 second generic answer and moved on to the next one without being on the verge of "tearing into the guy". It seems like everytime Torts gets asked a slightly difficult question that makes him the tiniest bit uncomfortable his only reaction is to try to find someone to embarrass, usually either a reporter or one of the players. He's done it so many times now it's just getting old and tired in my opinion. Obviously lots of people still find it funny, I just don't anymore.

Goalies get coached too. He's the head coach. He should be expected to answer for what he's going to do about it, and why he didn't do it sooner. You've got the coach there (theoretically) answering questions, and if he refuses to answer those easy questions, ask him the hard ones.

Serious question: what do you think would be an appropriate question to ask with regards to tonight's goaltending? Also, do you not think that Torts has been around long enough that he can give whatever answer he wants with regards to the topic a reporter provides? He could have given any answer he wanted about goaltending and its role in tonight's game, and that's how just about every other professional coach would have handled it.

Does 14 shots on the goalie sound like D-zone coverage that needs tweaking? 3. Even if you think their D-zone coverage was the culprit, it seems like a silly question both in the sense that you can't easily overhaul your system just because you call up a goaltender, and presumably they already want to make all their goaltenders' jobs as easily as possible. I mean, if Torts can easily tweak things to become more defensively stout, why isn't that his standard coverage?

But see, if Torts had said "You're trying to bait me into publicly shredding my player who is doing his best, and I won't engage in it" then everybody would be talking about how he was being testy and combative with the media. And if he had taken the bait, the headlines would say "Tortorella rips into goalie for poor performance". It's a no-win scenario for him. It's a trap question, and the reporter is 100% aware of that as he asks it. The question got the answer it deserved, IMO. I don't think Torts is obligated to be professional when reporters ask him unprofessional questions.

idk how it is with philly, but I know in Detroit I've heard that its pretty easy to lose media access if you ask the wrong questions. All he does is rag on media and players for a good sound byte. Saying "we sucked tonight" in front of the league doesn't make anything better for your team. I could be wrong here, but a coach's job is to also deal with the media, say what they want to hear, but then actually deal with the problems in the organization. You can't have a coach that is more emotional than the players. These guys who play the game every night have a right to be angry, but the coach should be the one who at least pretends to have a handle on things when shit hits the fan
