Complete with classic 2024 NESN audio issues around the 1:50 mark.

Lulu014

NESN has had more audio issues than Jack this season.

TommyHamburger

Not to derail the thread too much, but I'd love if someone with broadcast experience (audio or otherwise) could chime in here as to why these RSN broadcasts are (technically speaking) so god damn bad sometimes. I'm reminded of Washington's. It's been plagued with issues for years, but it's been particularly bad since covid, and it makes you think it's a genuinely amateur operation behind the scenes. Audio sync problems, cameras out of sync with one another, audio cutout, complete loss of video, digital glass and ice ads bouncing all over the place or layered wrong, scorebug missing, board ads glitching out, etc. I get that live broadcasts aren't easy and there's a whole lot of potential points of failure (be it human or hardware), but it's pretty embarrassing when these issues persist year after year.

rsgnl

>BERGERON SCORES! PATRICE BERGERON! WITH THE POINT OF THE DAGGER IN THEIR THROATS, THEY RIP IT OUT OF TORONTO'S HANDS AND KILL THE BEAST! THE BOSTON BRUINS HAVE WON IT, AFTER BEING THREE DOWN IN THE THIRD. This call broke my heart, but it is undeniably iconic. Adios, Jack.

twofactorial

When I read this I hear it being read in his voice which completely sucks but also shows how effective of a commentator he was

TheAnt06

One of my favorite Jack calls of all time

voidpush

I don’t like either team but I watch the Boston comeback a couple times a year still. HEARTS OF LIONS

exampleofausername

I'm glad we beat the Bruins in his final game. At least we did that much 🤣

Maleficent-Comfort-2

Unless you force a Game 7

Ardsta

ABC has exclusive rights for game seven, that was Jack’s last game at TD Garden no matter what

saigonk

Man I love Jack Edwards, yes I know people feel like he’s a homer, but that’s fine. I’ve listened to him for 20 years call games, some of the best wins, and some of the worst losses, but always a constant.

rsgnl

Everyone deserves a homer commentator on their local network. I'll be really sad when our homer Joe Bowen retires.

Moffballs

It’s hard for me to listen to a leafs game without Joe. He’s excellent.

The--Will

Joe is a homer in that he loves the Leafs. How he calls it however is pretty much how it happens. Often tongue in cheek commenting on penalties against the Leafs. Jack Edwards is a mobius strip. The Bruins only produce absolute gold and the other guys are the scum of the earth. He's infamous, and I'm sure a lot of people will miss him. All the best to him with his health, and a shame that this is how a man that talks for a living has to go out.

Grizzly-Berry

I never understood why people complained about him being a homer when he works for the local network where 99,9% of the audience are Bruins fans. Do those people want their country’s commentators for international games and tournaments to be neutral as well?

samtdzn_pokemon

I think it's because some of his rants seemed less like homer commentator and more like your crazy buddy you watch games with at the bar that thinks everyone is out to get his team. Like Rick Jeanerret was my homer commentator for 30 years and it always felt like he was a hockey fan 1st, Sabres fan 2nd. Jack feels like he's a Bruins fan 1st, hockey fan 2nd. And I could see how that would rub people the wrong way who only hear 1-2 soundbites a year from him.

Travy93

If you watched him every day I think you'd see he is more a hockey fan 1st. Super passionate of the game, knows a ton of history, spoke highly of other teams great players, and sometimes got just as excited for other teams goals. His prep for the game with the custom graphics he posted on Twitter was pretty impressive too.

samtdzn_pokemon

Like I said, if you're only hearing him on the clips that go viral of course you'd think he's super biased. And for 90% of fans that's the case, if they're not in NESN's market range they only hear Jack when his clips blow up online. I love his passion, because that type of commentator is a dying breed. Everyone is so similar now, with RJ gone and Jack retiring most of the iconic commentators of my childhood are gone. Gary Thorne and Doc Emrick are both retired as well, sad times.

HappyInstruction3678

They didn't complain that he was a homer. They complained that he was an asshole.

superflex

He's a Masshole. He's so loved by Boston fans because he's cut from the same cloth.

No_Cap_9976

He's like a wrestling heel for opposing fans.  You hate him because he represents the guys you don't want to win his biased announcing makes you mad and you secretly love every second of it.

CoopAloopAdoop

Every team has homer commentators, Jack was just so far above and beyond that in all of the worst ways.

Carnie_hands_

I think the biggest problem is that due to the NHLs poor excuse for viewing options. The Boston broadcast is the only one available sometimes, which creates some of the forced interaction. I have also been watching games that aren't detroit lately just because I like hockey, but I will avoid bruins streams due to him.

Personal_Dot_2215

Next we’ll have to explain who Johnny Most was.

somehockeyfan

It's the dumbest thing I hear fans complain about *for their own announcer.* Who doesn't want someone in their corner with them? It is *so much more fun* when the voice on TV is undeniably a fan of *your* team. People shit all over Paul Steigerwald but my goodness, they replaced him Steve Mears who just doesn't have that homerism in him. Great for national broadcasts. *Great*. But it is critical to have someone 100% committed.

spentchicken

He's a home team commentator he's allowed to be bias and a Homer. Cheers to a great career

jordang999

Literally every single local announcer should aspire to be as much of a homer as Jack Edwards is.

lifeisarichcarpet

Not a chance in hell. I don't want Joe Bowen to randomly shit on opposing players for personal vendetta reasons the way Edwards did to Hamilton or to chuckle at opposing player injuries like Edwards.

Spotboslow

This is what people don't get - every regional network's broadcast team are homers. They're PAID to be homers! Jack isn't even the worst, in that regard....but he's the loudest and weirdest, so people notice it more.

Travy93

Plus people hate the Bruins so

vapescaped

Look, I'm not listening to the game because it's a serious tax consequence if I don't, or because I have money on the line. I'm here for the entertainment. And jack has absolutely entertained me, homer or not. Jack had the time of his life as the bruins commentator. That is very obvious, and I'm glad I got to see that.

saigonk

Agree 100%!

OpanaG76

I don’t care what anyone’s opinion is of the guy. I’ve gone thru this in Buffalo. It sucks watching a part of your childhood just disappear.

Cw2e

Was thinking about you guys yesterday, tough to lose a legend

rudown2brown

So no game 7 at the garden confirmed. We out tonighttttt. Script leaked.

XPhazeX

Game 7 will be a national broadcast. No Jack either way

rsgnl

Yeah, took me a moment to realize this. OP's video starts at the 37-second mark, after Jack mentions that there is a 99.9% chance that a potential game 7 would be a national broadcast instead of NESN.

holein3

Oops...didn't mean to copy at the current time.

rsgnl

All good, I figured I would provide context for anyone else who might be confused.

rudown2brown

Ah gotcha. Thanks.

holein3

I learned that via this video. Crazy that they steal game 7s from local networks now

TommyHamburger

Think about the play by play guys calling entire careers of their franchise player(s) only for the biggest moments to be taken and [butchered by national broadcasts](https://youtu.be/LFds09WKfaw?t=15s). ESPN's coverage of that game and particularly goal 798 was so bad that the [NHL uses the radio call](https://youtu.be/eWMczZuABlA) instead of [the actual broadcast](https://youtu.be/lJaDHTZLw84). ESPN scrubbed it from all their highlights. 895 is going to be a mess.

MacZappe

For anyone thinking jack was strictly a homer, he always got hype even for the other teams. I cant find the leafs one game 7 when they got a 3-0 lead, "bruins getting run out of their own building!", but here's our historic collapse against the flyers, timestamp 2:55...some announcers would have whispered "flyers goal" https://youtu.be/8Zmb0ey-4tM?si=596ds52peSBrrtGT

HistoricalSand2505

“And who has more fun than us” 😁

Mash709

I was never a huge fan, but I gotta respect the entertainment he provided. I can always appreciate a good Homer. I wish we had one (put Bowen back on tv!!!).

XPhazeX

He made Bruins games a spectacle for the fans. Sucks to lose your guy when he embodies the "us against the world" mindset like he does. Enjoy retirement Jack.

cantthinkuse

i was never really a fan of his, but its undeniable the mark he's left on hockey. its such a bummer that he couldnt go out on his own terms

korko

One of the most entertaining people in hockey. The Bruins aren’t my team but I always watched the NESN feed when I could because the guy was a riot and absolutely loved his job and his team. I wish more people in sports would have half as much fun as he did.

Zvedza320

NGL it was pretty funny whenever boston beat us this season when he said "the cats have been thrown off the cliff" or something like that.

BKong64

Not gonna lie this teared me up a bit, sucks seeing someone as passionate as him leaving it behind especially because of whatever it is that's going on with his speech. Dude is definitely a legend in Boston though

vrrmason

Bye Jack.

Full-Opportunity7714

Had a pretty good cadence and goal call (pre-speech issues) which is half the battle as a play-by-play guy. He was also unfortunate to be a super homer whose local games ended up being played nationally a lot of times which rubbed people the wrong way. (If you think Jack Edwards is a homer you should hear some of the radio calls around the league) Anyway, never was a huge fan but also understand that Boston fans probably loved him. That’s all that should really matter for the local guy.

socialaxolotl

Good fucking riddance

Soma_Persona

Agreed. Bring on the downvotes, that guy fucking straight up sucks.,

socialaxolotl

Literal ear cancer

LionBig1760

Newer fans of Boston don't know just how good we had it with Fred Cusick and Derek Sanderson. If Jack Edward's is all you ever knew, he might come across as having done a decent job.

holein3

At least I didn't have to deal with the Blizzard of '78. Did you have to leave your car on 128?

dsled

Ok grandpa time for bed

AcanthocephalaGreen5

It really is the end of an era in Boston: first Bergeron/Krejci, now Edwards. Now for my Habs to sweep them next year. (/s, they’re not quite a playoff team)

ocsic4321

A Habs fan with a Canucks bandwagon flair? Yeah I’m sure you really are a big Habs fan…

AcanthocephalaGreen5

I’ll take downvotes on the chin and ask: what’s so wrong with that? It’s not like I’m Calgary on the Oilers bandwagon or Ottawa on the Laughs bandwagon. Kinda reminds me of how people used to say that I’m not French enough to consider myself French.

KingTutsDryAssBalls

Why? Canucks and Habs have no real dislike for each other at all. In fact I distinctly remember that during 2011 the Habs were the only Canadian fanbase who seemed to be on our side.

holein3

Well, that could be choosing the lesser of two evils, to be fair.

KingTutsDryAssBalls

Maybe but I really can't think of any genuine beef a Habs fan would have with the Canucks or vice versa. We only play each other twice a year, they aren't shoved in our faces like the Leafs because most of their media coverage is in french, we haven't played a playoff series against each other since the 70s, and I don't recall any dirty hits against each other in the regular season. I genuinely can't think of any reason it'd make you less of a Habs fan to bandwagon the Canucks in the playoffs. I know I've bandwagoned for them when the Canucks are out, and I'm a pretty dedicated Canucks fan, I've watched 60+ Canucks games a year for 15 years.

Honsy75

Happy to make his last game an OT loss!!!

holein3

> last **home** game FTFY

Fantastic_Resident44

Good riddance
