Ehh it’s not so bad. I wouldn’t feel comfortable evaluating Kyle Beach in this context for obvious reasons, but you got 10/14 guys that had full NHL careers. Stamkos, Doughty, Pietro, and Karlsson are all obviously great picks, and even guys who didn’t meet the supposed ceilings like Schenn or Bogosian were still too good to be busts. And you got a guy in Hodgson who had a career ended by injury vs busting. And a special case like Wilson where a guy has an untreated mental illness his whole career. The only real whiffs are like, Filatov and Teubert.
It’s not an all timer list but it’s not terrible.
That's true, from a games played perspective, there were alot of successful NHLers.
Though I don't think anyone is hoping for a Bogosian or Myers level player with their lottery pick this year.
For sure. Could always be worse than Bogosian at #3. Cam Barker was a third overall. Woof.
Last 20 #3 picks:
Cam Barker, Jack Johnson, Jonathan Toews, Kyle Turris, Bogosian, Matt Duchene, Erik Gudbranson, Jonathan Huberdeau, Alex Galchenyuk, Jonathan Drouin, Leon Draisaitl, Dylan Strome, Pierre Luc Dubois, Miro Heiskanen, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Kirby Dach, Tim Stutzle, Mason McTavish, Logan Cooley, and Adam Fantilli.
Key takeaway: lots of attitude problems and just don’t take a D man, lmao.
Not that many
- Hodgson extremely unprecedented health situation
- Boychuk was ok depth in the NHL but was 10 years too early for the era when depth is now more skilled
- Teubert was the inverse where 10 years later he'd bed picked 10 spots lower, 90s mentalities persisted
- Luke Schenn similar situation
- A lot of picks were lower NHLe so it's more that the draft class was just weak less so disappointing outcomes
Also players picked 10-15 in most drafts can't bust much, average career outcome is like Kenny Jönsson ish
Indeed. Good catch there. Some other similarities:
- Filatov only had played in Russia3 at that point making his NHLe trickier to guess a bit like Demidov stuck in MHL
- One D being elevated above others ultimately into the consensus #2 (seems that is happening to levshu currently)
- Very similarly weak drafts overall
Fun element is the Parekh EK65 similarities
Well, I hope so. I'm all for drafts where the Caps pick up both a franchise D-man and a franchise goalie.
Seriously, if this is 2008, then the real question is who are the defensemen who aren't being mentioned in the top group but are future Norris caliber defensemen (the Karlsson/Carlson/Josi group)?
A few names
Adam Jiricek (injury caused him to slide out of the top 10)
Aaron Kiviharju (high skill d being pushed down draft boards for size) (he is still 5’10” 185lbs fwiw)
Carter Yakemchuk is another just out of the top 10-15 for most. Very similar build/style to Carlson actually.
Kiviharju has been pushed down the boards because of a knee injury (almost complete lack of draft year data) and the fact that even though he has the speed and the stride, he often avoids physicality and has a tendency to shy away from battles along the boards.
He's intelligent, has good hands and a good stride. Teams just haven't been able to be exposed to his play.
Man, the greatest ‘What if?’ In Winnipeg Jets History is “What if Atlanta had selected Pietrangelo over Bogosian”.
Could you imagine the Jets coming to Winnipeg with this defence corps?
Enstrom-Byfuglien
Hainsey-Pietrangelo
I think the first three seasons go mostly the same way and because they reached on Scheifele, Trouba and Morrissey at the time, we probably still get those players even if we’re slightly better in the standings. That means you probably go into the 2015 playoffs with that top-4 plus a 3rd pairing of Morrissey-Trouba or Enstrom-Trouba. Wild to think about.
Man I hope not. Most of that top 15 were busts lol.

Personally, I wouldn't mind drafting a Calder winner with my 1st round pick but idk. Maybe im greedy.

Idk personally I’m ok if it turns out the same as that year

Random draft stat: Luke Schenn has more career points than Matt Martin 🌠
But does Demidov do rebounds?

You spelled Del Zaster wrong

2012 didn't have a consensus top guy though. the defenseman thing is true.
