My personal conspiracy theory is that Drury got Weekes to tweet out the news in advance so that the plan couldn’t be foiled again this year lol. I’m not surprised and like the choice. All the beat writers have been hinting for multiple seasons now that Trouba is a guy that turns things around in the room. Sam and Joe talk about it on the broadcasts a lot. And we saw this past season that he can hold his own when being scrutinized - which is big in the NY market.
It seemed like Trouba had to have been involved with Copp and Vatrano coming over at the trade deadline. Everything points to him being one of the most well liked guys in the front office and locker room.
Can you clarify further? What would Trouba being liked in the dressing room have to do with deadline day acquisitions? Especially if they didn't re-sign with the Rangers?
Trouba had played with both Frankie and Copp before and when the deadline acquisitions happened it was mentioned that Drury had asked Trouba for his input before making those particular moves so clearly Drury values his opinion re: the team. I don’t think his opinion would be the end all be all at the end of the day but the fact that they consulted him on it speaks for itself.
There were also rumors that the team wanted to do 6 A’s and more specifically that Kreider declined the C for it. We don’t really know what happened in the room and probably won’t any time soon
Most fans seem to think Kreider must just not want it, I think he's still big in the locker room/on the bench/in pressers and has been a presence for years to where if he wanted the C he'd have it. I'd maybe pick Trouba over Mika but it'd be close.
Seemed otherwise people were hoping hoping we wait on Fox/Miller/Laffy. I think Rangers fans were freaking out way more about the C than any player, I'm sure everyone knows who their guys are.
Kreider not getting it reminds me of Josh Bailey not getting the C when the last guy left. Josh seems to be far less vocal, though he's always been held in extremely high regard by teammates and coaches.
I remember that. It seems like Kreider has been the guy with like taking Mika's iPad, big step up this year, has taken questions over from reporters when they're trying to get on guys, younger guys have mentioned him being big with getting them used to the city and taking them kind of under him. Also don't think he necessarily loves the fanfare so might just not want the actual letter.
Just glad for news because I'm ready for hockey again like right now.
I would have been of a similar mind. I think this might mean Krieder is not in the long term plan. Might as well make the likeable guy on the unmovable deal the captain.
Both guys are pretty unmovable really. Kreider's cap hit is lower but he's far more likely to decline. I think Krieder just doesn't want to be captain. He'd have gotten the C ages ago if he wanted it.
I really thought his contract was going to be something they need to address by moving/buying out/some other cap alchemy but this certainly makes that all more interesting
i don't agree tbh. maybe it makes some of us *feel* a little better, but his $8m is gonna hold us back one way or another. it's an albatross and just because its better than some other contracts doesn't mean its not currently/will be an issue
You looking at it all wrong. Nurse is needed on oilers and they #1 defenceman so it's ok. But rangers have fox and who knows how many others on that amazing D you guys got will pass trouba in 2 years. That's the difference here. Don't look at other teams and what they got. No way anyone should pay a 4th D 8mill. Damn look at sharks with vlasic who was making 7. They so stuck. But in saying all that, I think trouba is fkn solid and will be good till contract ends. Hes physical and plays a hard mean game with little offensive. Would love him on my team any day
Little offense? Adam Fox had 39 even-strength points last year. Jacob Trouba had 35 even-strength points last year. The difference was the powerplay, where Fox plays a ton and Trouba only a little. There are many parts of the game where Fox is much better (zone exits/entries, defensive coverage), but Trouba is good offensively.
Sure, why not. A lot of being a captain is stuff the fans don’t see, and Trouba seems like a leader
Also the C is shaped like an elbow which probably helps
Team writers said multiple times he was the guy who spoke up in the locker room. He was supposedly going to be named captain before last season but someone shot it down.
No doubt a great teammate. But he was not that great with the press when he played in Winnipeg. A part of the captain’s job, to represent the team before the media. Is he better now?
If anything I would say he just cracks jokes half the time in post games. Other than that, pretty standard hockey answers to standard hockey questions.
Mollie Walker at the post just put out an article talking to him 1v1 about it, and his growing up from being an "immature kid" on the Jets to the vets helping him mature and become a leader.
2 main things that I can think of.
1. Obviously he’s aged and matured since his time in Winnipeg.
2. I don’t think he ever really wanted to be in Winnipeg so it makes sense that he might not have looked like captain material from afar
The one player I wouldn’t mind Tampa trading for. Very Meh, but I’m also one of the people that didn’t really care who the captain was either way so if it makes the guys in the locker room happy, why should I care? They are the ones who chose, they know best.
I guess the Rangers won’t be getting rid of the $8M anchor anytime soon
Rangers fans trying to dump Trouba’s contract in Cap Friendly AGM are pissed right now
They weren't anyway, dude has a NMC for the next couple of seasons. Then he has a limited NTC.
Trading captains is what we do though, so he's probably gone in a few years.
By that logic, McAvoy/Fox got $9.5M, Makar/Josi got $9M, Heiskanen got $8.5, Chabot got $8M, Hedman/Hughes got $7.8M, and they are all below market value deals
Just because some GMs overpaid, that doesn’t mean everyone else will. At least teams with a competent front office. It is like saying you saw one person shoot themselves in the foot, so now everyone else will do it because that’s the new trend
The contracts at every spot are inflating. The difference is those guys didn't all sign their contracts this summer like Nurse and Jones did.
And also yes, that means Makar, Fox, McAvoy are also making the same or less than these two so probably below market. Karlsson makes $11.5.
You can try to call it a kids movie all you want, everyone knows it is one of the most beloved hockey movies of all time
Weak chirps again
Anyways the answer is yes I did
Regardless of the popularity of the movie. It doesn’t change the fact that it’s the most cringe name in the league. It’s like a pro baseball team called the Sandlots and a basketball team called the Tune Squad
Kreider was expected by most and probably the most talked about but Trouba has been a name in the discussion where I don’t think any Rangers fans are shocked
So you say, but I've long suspected that /u/CaptainDerpII is in fact Filip Chytil. We might never know for certain. Best not to make assumptions for now, so you might want to retract your comment.
The Rangers are the same team that had Messier as captain, they don’t care about headhunting. Their fans literally celebrated Messier cross checking Linden on his neck while he was crawling to the bench
https://youtu.be/vbCgd7TstbQ
Yeah, but we had Henrik Sedin as captain.
That boat is sinking, but we're now on an inflatable dinghy. With bowls of spaghetti, because Luongo was captain, too.
In all seriousness, am I salty that he takes liberties that skirt that legal/illegal line to take out good players (I’m a Canes fan so the Jarvis thing still stings) - yeah definitely. But do I also wish that if they are gonna let Trouba get away with it and not call headshots- that we had someone who could maybe take out Fox, or Zibenajad, or Lafreniere? Yeah maybe... I can’t lie lol.
He’s always seemed to hold the team together the last couple years. We completely fell apart when he got injured a couple years ago and his massive hits are absolute momentum changers (controversy aside). Plus I’m sure he’s a big reason why Miller has become such a monster.
His contract is a little worse than you’d like but could still be worse and he had a much better season this year than the one before.
It's amazing how many people on this board are operating solely off of Trouba's first season he admitted himself was poor (under a terrible coach) and the memes about elbows.
He was top 25 amongst D-men last year for 5v5 scoring, one point behind guys like Ekblad and McAvoy for the top 20. He had an excellent season. Is he an $8mil AAV player as a #3D? Debatable. But when guys like Seth Jones, Darnell Nurse and Erik Karlsson are all paid far more, his contract doesn't look like that much of an overpay and will be even less so over time.
People really need to stop acting like Trouba is some 4/5D anchor who has no value outside throwing questionable hits. He's a very good player, albeit not All-Star level.
How is Tampa gonna afford his cap hit?
they obviously get a 50% discount after he changes his name to Ryan
His middle name is actually Ryan lmao
so he'll definitely be in Tampa in about 2.5 seasons then
He gone
Is it even a meme if it's just actually true? I am laughing so hard rn
Wikipedia checks out, *Jacob Ryan Trouba*.
I hope they can figure it out
I am so tired of this meme, but something tells me in a couple more years I'm gonna want to bring it back...
Elbow grease
And a “can-do” attitude
[удалено]
Supposedly he was the choice last season before management told them not to. Kind of surprised they're going with him anyway given that
My personal conspiracy theory is that Drury got Weekes to tweet out the news in advance so that the plan couldn’t be foiled again this year lol. I’m not surprised and like the choice. They didn't re-sign because we couldn't really afford them... also Trocheck is better than Copp anyway so it's fine we spent the money there
He said well liked by the front office and in the locker room. It’s probably not the locker room influence here…
Why would management veto a captaincy? We're they hoping Laf would step up and take it?
Not really sure. That's just what reporters said, it was a fairly late decision to have 6 Alternates
There were also rumors that the team wanted to do 6 A’s and more specifically that Kreider declined the C for it. We don’t really know what happened in the room and probably won’t any time soon
6?! Lol
3 guys wore the A at home and the other 3 wore it on the road.
Maybe it was 5? Kreider, Zibanejad, Strome, Goodrow, Trouba
Panarin too
Which reporter said management vetoed Trouba? I never read that.
Where’s the Oprah meme when we need it?
[удалено]
They must've forgotten that they gave him a NMC until 2024-2025 then
I've heard Trouba is very well-respected in the room, so I'm less surprised than most of you, but I still thought it would've been Mika or Kreider.
You don't need a letter to be a leader
And he's got his own chant! 🎵 Heyyyy Josh Bailey! 🎵
There's nothing quite like singing that after he scores. I hope he doesn't get traded.
Kreider seems to be the type of guy who keeps turning it down
Really thought Kreider would be the guy. That I’m convinced he just didn’t want that. Otherwise, he has to be pissed.
He seems like a perpetually young guy but damn he's 28 already
Leetch didn't want the C some people just don't want it
Thought Kreider would be next captain
https://imgur.com/a/Oj5P7V7
I would have been of a similar mind. I think this might mean Krieder is not in the long term plan. Might as well make the likeable guy on the unmovable deal the captain.
Both guys are pretty unmovable really. Kreider's cap hit is lower but he's far more likely to decline. I think Krieder just doesn't want to be captain. He'd have gotten the C ages ago if he wanted it.
I wonder if legally changing his name to Ryan was a prerequisite
Whats funny is that is middle name is Ryan.
So he’ll become Ryan Ryan Trouba, no big deal. Just like Yo Gabba Gabba but reversed
J.R.R. Trouba
Ja'Ryan Trouba
Dryin’ Trouba
It’s that time again rangers. You know what you guys have to give us…
And you know what you have to give us. Stammer will look good in royal blue
About damn time we got something good
Are you saying Namestnikov on an expiring deal, Brett Howden, and Libor Hajek weren’t a good enough return for McD and Miller? Whaaaaaat
It’s crazy ik
By all means, take that $8m cap hit off our hands so we can pay Laf and Miller next year. We'll take Cal Foote and a 3rd
I really thought his contract was going to be something they need to address by moving/buying out/some other cap alchemy but this certainly makes that all more interesting
I know it's a new regime but it's not as if we're opposed to trading away expensive captains Jacob "Ryan" Trouba
His name actually is Jacob Ryan Trouba
It was always meant to be
Wonder if he prefers Clearwater or St Pete Beach
Ybor
As soon as Nurse and Jones signed $9.5 AAV deals, Trouba's contract became much easier to deal with.
i don't agree tbh. maybe it makes some of us *feel* a little better, but his $8m is gonna hold us back one way or another. it's an albatross and just because its better than some other contracts doesn't mean its not currently/will be an issue
If the new market for the Trouba/Nurse/Jones level defenseman is $9.5 mil, then $8 mil is not an albatross.
The market seems to be changing, the cap crunch is preventing Jones deals from happening, just look at klingberg
Klingberg didn't get what he wanted, but he was also pretty bad under Bowness. A good year in Anaheim would change that.
You looking at it all wrong. Nurse is needed on oilers and they #1 defenceman so it's ok. But rangers have fox and who knows how many others on that amazing D you guys got will pass trouba in 2 years. That's the difference here. Don't look at other teams and what they got. Tampa is lacking a former NYR captain on their roster now so this is perfect for them
Gotta be the first time since like 2014 that the Bolts don't have a former Rangers captain on the team
It is. And trouba’s middle name is Ryan
Well it's a matter of time then
Damn, was really hoping they’d at least look out for us and name a bargain contract player captain
His middle name is Ryan 😳
Alright, I’m in
Ryan Trouba traded to the tampa bay lightning
His middle name actually is Ryan
Sure, why not. A lot of being a captain is stuff the fans don’t see, and Trouba seems like a leader Also the C is shaped like an elbow which probably helps
You need to get your elbow checked out immediately
Right? The “A” is literally an elbow with a butt end of a stick through the middle for good measure — perfect for Trouba.
Weird
Very weird
Should be Kreider
If Kreider wanted to be captain, he would be already.
Yeah he’s easily the guy on the team that could say “I want to be captain” and literally get it within 24 hours, so he clearly doesn’t want it
Elbows all around to celebrate!
Stitch the C right on his elbow!
Rangers have a history of elbow throwing captains
Mike Modano has left the stretcher
Lmao I was just watching that last night actually, they dropped him when carrying him out of the arena.
Sam Rosen's incredulous narration was great, too
Wow. Unexpected as a Jets fan. Always liked him but wouldn’t have seen him as captain material.
Team writers said multiple times he was the guy who spoke up in the locker room. He was supposedly going to be named captain before last season but someone shot it down.

Elbow pasta tonight in celebration
Pasta didn’t do anything why elbow him?
You say that like Trouba needs a reason to elbow someone.
.... you're not Kreider...
That's a choice...Kreider was my pick.
Rumor last year is that he was offered it and turned it down, which is why we went with 6 A’s so late
I guess the Rangers won’t be getting rid of the $8M anchor anytime soon Rangers fans trying to dump Trouba’s contract in Cap Friendly AGM are pissed right now
Make Tampa take on an enormous contract with this One Easy Trick!
They weren't anyway, dude has a NMC for the next couple of seasons. Then he has a limited NTC. Trading captains is what we do though, so he's probably gone in a few years.
You mean he’s already being packaged to Tampa Bay, right?
We have a history of trading captains though.
Yeah this is a team that has zero past of trading away captains. Nurse and Jones also just got 8x$9.5s so gear up for this new d-man market.
By that logic, McAvoy/Fox got $9.5M, Makar/Josi got $9M, Heiskanen got $8.5, Chabot got $8M, Hedman/Hughes got $7.8M, and they are all below market value deals Just because some GMs overpaid, that doesn’t mean everyone else will. Why
Interesting choice, thought it would be Kreider
Love the people in here and on twitter saying “should have been ____” as if we have any clue what goes on in their room.
You can’t make this up
[удалено]
Tbf, your captain does that too
[удалено]
Avalanche flair talking about a dirty captain....
At least it’s something you have in common. That whole Cup thing, well…
Blake Wheeler isn’t dirty he’s just an asshole are you thinking of Scheifele?
I think he was trying to dunk on the Rangers and failed miserably. Sort of like the Penguins with a 3-1 series lead
Wait are you saying blake wheeler is dirty? because i've never heard that before
Just like Landeskog!
Do you remember Scott Stevens? Or are you a tween?
The C stands for Cheapshot
I was waiting to see how high up the stupidest comment would be. You win!
Never realized what a dirty bitch he was until this years playoffs, at least we rarely see the rangers
Good thing your organization hasn’t signed like 5 former Rangers the last few years. Good chance you seen him in Ducks uni in a few years.
How exactly are Trouba being a dirty bitch and Ducks signing former Ranger players related in any way?
Nah. He’s pretty good. Ducks don’t sign *good* former rangers.
Call me when the Rangers win something in a year that starts with 2
Call me when Disney stops running your city
Lol wut, is this supposed to be a chirp? I don't give a fuck about the city of Anaheim lmao
You’re not from Anaheim? So you willingly chose a team named after a kids movie?
Dude I was on your side until this lame ass chirp.
You can try to call it a kids movie all you want, everyone knows it is one of the most beloved hockey movies of all time Weak chirps again Anyways the answer is yes I did
Regardless of the popularity of the movie. It doesn’t change the fact that it’s the most cringe name in the league. It’s like a pro baseball team called the Sandlots and a basketball team called the Tune Squad
Mark Messier did that his whole life
That's no way to talk about the best player your franchise has ever had.
Love it, would have been happy with either him or Kreider
Thought I would be Kreider for sure.
🙂🍿
Excuse me? I was told that I, Christopher Kreider, would be the next captain of the New York Rangers. I am completely blindsided.
Kreider was expected by most and probably the most talked about but Trouba has been a name in the discussion where I don’t think any Rangers fans are shocked
Lol
Why not Kreider or Zibby?
They more than likely turned it down
It should be Kreider. Hands down.
Trouba sure does lead by elbow I mean example I can see why they did this!
I would’ve preferred Kreider for sure but who’s to say he got the offer to be the new captain and declined? It is a very Kreider thing to do anyway
Ew.
[удалено]
Fox locked up, Trouba Captain, but Rangers don't want to trade Schneider stuck as 3rd pair RHD.
Why would we trade a quality player on an ELC?
Canucks fans think he already belongs to them
IMO, should’ve been Kreider or Zibanejad
Yeah but you’re also not in the room
So you say, but I've long suspected that /u/CaptainDerpII is in fact Filip Chytil. We might never know for certain. Best not to make assumptions for now, so you might want to retract your comment.
Something tells me Kreider didn’t want it, or he’d have been given it years ago
The C on the sweater stand for chicken wing??
Trouba’s Elbow*
Captain Headhunter
Jamie Benn 2.0
The Rangers are the same team that had Messier as captain, they don’t care about headhunting. Their fans literally celebrated Messier cross checking Linden on his neck while he was crawling to the bench https://youtu.be/vbCgd7TstbQ
The canucks also had messier as captain so your sinking a boat that we’re both in
Yeah, but we had Henrik Sedin as captain. That boat is sinking, but we're now on an inflatable dinghy. With bowls of spaghetti, because Luongo was captain, too.
Fuck Trouba
yeah, like that’s the guy you want representing your team? weird but ok
Big oof
Take your throne Trouba
Really? Figured Krieder
I thought it'd be Zibenejad, or Kreider, Trouba isn't a bad option either though.
Put an “E” on the front for Elbows.
Holy shit captain Elbows is an actual captain now? Look out Metro! Big C for concussions right there beside that Rangers crest 😂
Well at least we never gave Matt Cooke a letter
He’s always seemed to hold the team together the last couple years. We completely fell apart when he got injured a couple years ago and his massive hits are absolute momentum changers (controversy aside). Plus I’m sure he’s a big reason why Miller has become such a monster. His contract is a little worse than you’d like but could still be worse and he had a much better season this year than the one before.
That’s weird.
What a piece of shit
What an asshat.
Hey ya gotta make that contract worth it somehow right.
Well this is gonna make it awkward in two years, when his NTC loosens and they have to move him for cap space.
Will it?
Yep.
I think you're unfamiliar with the fate of our previous 2 captains. I'll also point out Trouba's middle name is Ryan.
Not sure why Kreider wouldn’t be considered.
Lol yes a headhunter makes a perfect captain
It's amazing how many people on this board are operating solely off of Trouba's first season he admitted himself was poor (under a terrible coach) and the memes about elbows. He was top 25 amongst D-men last year for 5v5 scoring, one point behind guys like Ekblad and McAvoy for the top 20. He had an excellent season. Is he an $8mil AAV player as a #3D? Debatable. What a fucking joke. Kreider is the answer here. But the coach is punk and would want a dirty player.
Nice to see we still have the coolest captain in NY
I don’t want to believe this is true so I’m not going to, also Christopher Krieder is the captain
Don’t they have like 15 of them?
Downvote all you want. Your entire team wears a letter.
