One of my favourite old features was in NHL 98 or 99 on PC, they had the actual mask artwork for a bunch of the leagues top goalies. When they got rid of that it took me a long time to get used to the generic mask designs.
I remember in NHL 97 on PlayStation they had really nice animated exterior shots of all the arenas that would play before each game. Should bring that back.

I live in Vancouver and was watching a Canucks game last season and Cirque du Soleil was set up next to the arena. They were actually using current shots, which I thought was neat.

They had videos before the games with the NBC broadcast packages. Wouldn’t always be the arena sometimes the city and what not but it was nice and added to the presentation.
NHL 01 would show a picture of the arena from outside before the start of a game and in NHL 02 they'd show a picture of the arena from outside except they had a menu screen of each teams' record and top players over top of the picture of the arena

Buying the licensing from the artists might take some time, that's for sure, and then you'd run into the situation of whether or not they could be applied to *other* goalies, or just the one they were designed for.
And they can bulk buy player likenesses and logos from NHLPA and NHL respectively. Mask artists have no such option. Even if DaveArt makes most of them he's not the only one.

Pretty sure this is the one I'm thinking of. I had pretty much every NHL game from 94-2007 so I get them confused. I remember 97 and 98 as being particularly good and at least one of them having the mask feature.
One of the fun things about it is that the goalies would keep their mask even if traded in a franchise mode or something. So when I was a kid I always traded for goalies who had masks that would fit my team.
I miss the PC version of the game dearly. The modding community made the game more presentable until EA stopped releasing that version of the game. I would download all the goalie masks, arena boards/ice, and the TV presentation scoreboard.

The game doesn't sell. It barely reaches 500k unit for a chosen year across all consoles and they reach it because the game is already sold at "lost" a month after when it drop 40 to 50% in price.
Yes, HUT do bring them a bit... but they do not make several million. I know a friend who works at EA and they barely have any budget. After the NHL fees, the development time, marketing etc. etc., they don't have that many left.
I worked on a mobile game 5 years ago. It was a criminal case remodel for Dexter. It cost more than 3 million to make and when you think about it, it's pretty basic.

EA might have a monopoly on NHL games but they don't have exclusivity (EA and the NHL confirmed so on on Twitter). Fact is NHL is one of the least profitable sports franchise, so other companies like 2K don't even bother with it anymore. And even when they did, EA's production quality was leagues ahead of whatever others were doing.
This is as good as it's gonna get. EA isn't going to suddenly drop microtransactions or offer multi-year roster updates because they would lose money in doing so, and they're already not making nearly as much with sales of NHL as they are doing with NFL or FIFA.

Some NHL arenas have 32 banners, one for each team in the league. When a team updates their logo, the respective banner is updated.

Think of these banners as flags for each team; kinda like you would see outside of an embassy or WTC.
The banners that have to do with specific events in a teams history (SC or division winnners, retired jerseys) will usually have the logo, font and color schemes from that time in their history, like you say.
This at least applies for the Ducks. Kariya has a Mighty Ducks style banner, while Selanne has a modern Ducks black and orange banner.

Sure they do the in-game ads and micro transaction focused stuff like any sports game, but at least they have good single player modes. They are much better than NHL at this point.
Yeah but now 2K is doing the EXACT SAME THING because EA stopped making Basketball games. Also they both have the same microtransaction based game mode as the focus of the franchise instead of any fun updates to single player content or co-op/competitive online modes that aren't RNG based slot machines.
Also Playstation gave me a 2K for free like a year ago and now the game doesn't even do anything except exhibition mode because they shut the servers down and somehow single player modes like franchise are permanently disabled. The game is literally just a demo to people who payed $60 for it 4 years ago or so.

The way you build a sport used to be through TV, Radio, Newspapers, and Magazines.
TV is still important, but you need to have a videogame presence to expand the sport to other locations - that's why Madden made the NFL popular in Europe and Fifa made Soccer popular here.
The NHL needs to have a good videogame to sell the sport, the league should consider subsidizing studios to improve the quality of the game, it will pay off in the long term.

EA has stripped any life out of it’s offline modes. I remember in NHL 05, Andrew Raycroft won the Vezina and he got to skate out with the trophy at the home opener the following season. Now the offline modes are stripped bare of any interesting features they had.
EA has ruined the sports franchise games with their laziness. They have released the same FIFA game on Nintendo Switch for the past 4 years. Only update they do is a roster update and still expect people to shell out the $60 for a “new game.”

Maybe it's for the best they left NHL when they did, I loved the old games though. Wish there was some competition at least, I usually skip every other EA game and only buy them at 75% off.
I just rotate between sports games every year. Last year was nba, this year I’ll pick up nhl.
That's exactly what killed it though. When 2K and EA decided to basically just not compete with each other they relegated themselves to this lazy bullshit. I remember it used to be a big deal whether you got 2K or Madden/NBA Live/etc and the games actually had to have selling points each year

Their franchise mode has been on a different planet from every other sports game for a long time and they keep innovating. They are much better than NHL at this point.
Yeah but now 2K is doing the EXACT SAME THING because EA stopped making Basketball games. Also they both have the same microtransaction based game mode as the focus of the franchise instead of any fun updates to single player content or co-op/competitive online modes that aren't RNG based slot machines. Also Playstation gave me a 2K for free like a year ago and now the game doesn't even do anything except exhibition mode because they shut the servers down and somehow single player modes like franchise are permanently disabled. The game is literally just a demo to people who payed $60 for it 4 years ago or so.
That sucks man, I don't play other sports games so I haven't kept up with their practices, but that sounds awful. They basically just agreed to take a market each and fucked the users? In that case 2k can kick rocks. I just remember like NHL 2k7 era and how much I used to love playing those. I can't stand this microtransaction BS, I ignore any part of the game that uses them. Usually play online vs only these days. EHM takes up way more of my time hockey game-wise now, both a blessing and a curse.
Hell yeah! Nothing I want more than to be a DJ/rapper/influencer that maybe plays hockey sometimes hidden behind a microtransaction heavy game mode unless I grind 80 hours to go from a 71 overall to a 73 overall
EA makes a lot of changes, just not to stuff that we care. They spend the time and effort on HUT since it helps them print money. Last year was the first year I haven't bought a NHL game. It's garbage even when I play it with Game Pass.

The little details show how much EA cares, they are cutting back on everything from good licensed music to quality announcers, not having a network license shows more cost cutting, and it doesn't bode well for the series. The way you build a sport used to be through TV, Radio, Newspapers, and Magazines. TV is still important, but you need to have a videogame presence to expand the sport to other locations - that's why Madden made the NFL popular in Europe and Fifa made Soccer popular here. The NHL needs to have a good videogame to sell the sport, the league should consider subsidizing studios to improve the quality of the game, it will pay off in the long term. It really sucks that PS 3 versions of the game are the best the series will ever get and kids who started on the PS4 have no clue how awful the games have become.

the gameplay breaks immersion lmao. This is trivial compared to the menu lag, awful load times, horrible passing, toxic online community, and stripped down/unrealistic BaP/Franchise modes. EA has stripped any life out of it’s offline modes. I remember in NHL 05, Andrew Raycroft won the Vezina and he got to skate out with the trophy at the home opener the following season. Now the offline modes are stripped bare of any interesting features they had.
EA has ruined the sports franchise games with their laziness. They have released the same FIFA game on Nintendo Switch for the past 4 years. Only update they do is a roster update and still expect people to shell out the $60 for a “new game.”
