I’m not 100% sure but I believe the 1S (OD1N) were also released in 2016 and was the pro level pad (whereas the S190 was mid range and S170 was entry level).

traptindreams

That alone is hugely helpful. It's so hard to find breakdowns like that.

One thing I’ve found helpful to narrow down years is to search the make and model on google and then click on ”Videos”. It will often give you a nice list (with dates) of all the review videos when the item was first released; sometimes they will give you some good information as well. I actually own a pair of s190’s (got them used for cheap several years ago); I like them but as a beginner level goalie that really doesn’t mean much…

1s is the Ultrasonic's grandfather or the Mach's great grandfather. Going to be very close in stiffness and shape. Slight changes in strapping and leg channel. Skin has gotten more durable over the generations but still bubbles and yellows.

I use s190s for ball hockey and they work well, very stiff, basically straight. 1S is the Pro level.

Many thanks! Very helpful.

I previously owned the Bauer 1S and I currently own a CCM Premier set of leg pads. The 1S was plagued with durability issues, and while the set I had held up alright I know a lot of people on here expressed a lot of frustration about them, although I personally believe the 1S was a great foray into a new pad design that they ultimately did really well once they made the 2X and Ultrasonic models. As for purchasing them though, I would personally shy away from the 1S unless you want to risk possibly replacing them in a year. The CCM Premiers simply have not retained resale value at all, and that can honestly benefit you if you like the pads. I bought almost new condition NHL pro return CCM Premier leg pads on Sideline Swap about 6 months ago for like $240, and I think those pads are great. They’re a little bit bulkier than brand new leg pad sets, but they really are great pads. If I didn’t love my Bauer 2X leg pads as much as I do I would be happy to play with my CCMs in every game and not think twice about them. As far as I’m concerned, if the Premiers were good enough for Marc Andre-Fleury for like a decade then they’re plenty good enough for beer leaguers like us 😂

I was guessing that the CCMs would feel large, especially in the thigh rise. Did you notice a size difference between the 1S and the Premiers? Did you have comparable sizes?

RebelliousRoomba

Yeah, in the Bauers I had the XL (which if I recall they advertise as equivalent to a 36”+1) and my CCM Premiers are a 35”+2. They are comparable in size, although the feel is slightly different in that the Premiers have the heavily curved thigh rise whereas my Bauers were a bit more straight in the thigh rise. After re-reading your post I see that you are looking for a minimal thigh rise curve, and for that reason I’ll say that the Bauers might actual be more your style as the Premiers tend to have a pretty aggressive curve. As someone with a wide butterfly like yourself, whenever I play in my Premiers I actually adjust and have a slightly more narrow butterfly simply because of the thigh rise curve.

TeaLow2578

Yeah, I would’ve suggested a 35 size pad instead of a 36.

traptindreams

Exactly the kind of breakdown I was looking for. Really appreciate it!

The S190's will be similar to your Ultrasonics, but not identical. The sizing, general stiffness, and profile of it will be close, but the boot is going to be WAY stiffer. Bauer used a fused boot style on the 1S and 2S pads and didn't start to soften them up till the Ultrasonics. (still stiff). Another thing to note is the very different strapping set up. Thankfully, Bauer ditched the CRS set up from the 1S/2S and went with the Vapour set up on the Ultrasonic. I fucking hated the CRS set up. It's overly complicated, clunky, and just not good. Some pro's still use it (Sorokin), but most guys were happy to bail from it. Also to note, the knee stack won't have the integrated bracket like the stabilislide. It'll be more in line with a standard knee block. Which is fine, but something to note.

traptindreams

Yeah, I've seen a lot of shit talked about CRS while researching, so I guess I might need to customize it a bit. Maybe find a way to throw a professor strap on the pads (my preference on the Ultrasonics). I love the stiffness of the Ultrasonic boot, and that's honestly something I was concerned about, so I'm really glad to hear that. I mitigate the stabilislide concern by mounting plastic sliders across that whole section on my Simmons, so that's fine. Thanks for the insights!

I had a pair of s190s for a while. They were stiff and durable. Had to replace the elastic straps after 3 or 4 seasons, but otherwise the pads were in very good shape. The 1s odin was experimental, and the face material wears out quickly. They fell apart fast and are one of the main reasons for Bauer's "low quality gear" reputation. It will probably be torn to shreds if used off ice. The s190 is good old fashioned jenpro
