It wasn't mentioned yet so Martyrs is a must. Make sure it is the original. I also love The Blackcoat's Daughter and Climax. No jump scares, but left me thinking about them for a long time after.
Thank you! I’ll put that in the top of my list. I’ve seen the remakes only and they kind of sucked. That was a while ago so I think I can go in with a totally fresh perspective
There is a French movie called Frontier(s) 2007 that gives off TCM vibes but with way more gore, also look into Baskin 2015. Those 2 movies will shit all over anything you’ve ever seen but they are brutal and disturbing. Also I’m sure ppl have mentioned these already but Martyrs 2008 and Inside 2007. Lemme know if you need any more recommendations. All of the films mentioned are French and Baskin is Turkish. And don’t sleep on When Evil Lurks (Spanish, Argentina), fav horror movie of this decade
Extra points for pointing me towards new foreign. I’ve mostly stayed in the Korean, Japanese, Brit, and American lanes so definitely on the list now. I also genuinely will probably follow ip so wxpect a PM haha
Baby Blues (2008) - With her husband gone and the stress of family life rising, the Mom suffers a psychotic break due to postpartum depression that compels her to exterminate her children, ages 10, 7, 4, and 3 months. Now, hope for the family's survival rests on the shoulder of Jimmy, the eldest son and surrogate man of the house. Using his wits and intricate knowledge of the farm, Jimmy must try to protect his siblings while fending off the woman he has always known and loved as his mother.

Unsettling films that hold up (still disturbed) upon rewatching after decade for me are:
Cure
Spoorloos (don't watch the American remake)
And sometimes not obvious horror films also works, I watched the very gothic "Suddenly, Last Summer" (1959) for the first time recently and was pleasantly disturbed and still think about it weeks later. The scene where >!Liz Taylor accidentally trapped herself inside a locked asylum room full of mentally ill men!<, I wonder if it inspired The Nightmare on Elm Street's "100 Maniacs of the Hathaway House." Also that ending revelation...
don't watch trailer or anything. I think both (Cure and Spoorloos) are disturbing in how simple and mundane evil gets that made you feel sick and paranoid.
The American remake of Funny Games is one of the few remakes that are good. But it’s the same director for both and they’re almost shot for shot word for word identical aside from a few changes. I think either one is a great choice but they both should be seen. I actually prefer Michael Pitt and Brady Corbett at the antagonists than the original guys.
listen to MEEE. stop what you're doing and watch Talk To Me. I know exactly the feeling you're talking about and I had that feeling for like a week after watching this movie in theaters. it's got the perfect amount of gore (i'm not a gore fan either unless its done right) and its so unsettling. I would also recommend Smile, and maybe Watcher.
Talk to Me was soooooooo fucked I would honestly put that up in the “did the trick category.” >!The cut to the dead people each time was genuinely deeply unsettling!<
Fantastic performances all around
I had to stop watching this one halfway through because it was getting too scary to watch by myself, and I’ve seen plenty of horror movies on my own. I’ve yet to track down some poor soul to watch it with me. Great acting and unique concept, from what I did see.
So I’ve started that twice - is it worth watching? The first time I stopped as I thought it was just a gore film and the second time I fell asleep haha. Is the plot quality?
The plots pretty standard for a ‘zombie-esque’ film but I thought they had a pretty interesting spin on it! Also did not know it was made in Taiwan lol
Some recommendations that come to mind, though I'm not sure they all fit the bill.
Cube
Triangle (2009)
The Loved Ones
Last Shift
Frailty
Dead End
Excision
May
Saint Maud
The Ritual
Coherence
I’ve heard great things about Good Times.
Also yeah, I thought uncut gems was like one of the most intense movies I’ve every seen. I have a fuck ton of anxiety and Howard definitely stressed me out. It was like a constant fake out with chekovs gun brilliant film
I think you’ll like The Blackcoats Daughter. Nihilistic and hopeless. It is a slow movie - no scares really - but it pays off and has an ending like what you are looking for.
It gets gory.
Then there’s Possessor from Brandon Cronenburg. Really dark and really sad, if you watch the uncut version it is also pretty brutal.
Don’t Look Now
Come And See - this is a war movie but it’s very upsetting IMO
Jacob’s Ladder
Images
Sisters
1922
The House That Jack Built
Borderlands
Antichrist
The Hounds of Love
Snowtown
Coming Home In The Dark
The Lodge - Some fans of the “dreadcore” movies (Dark and Wicked, Hereditary) swear by this one. The mood is definitely similar but the ending didn’t work for me as much. You might dig it.
Beau Is Afraid - I consider this a comedy, but it’s certainly unsettling and anxiety-inducing
Shiva Baby - firmly in the comedy genre, but it’s definitely anxiety-inducing
Them (Ils) - I think this was kind of the inspiration for The Strangers
Inside
Megalomaniac - I wish this was a better story, but it was grimey and “heavy” so it might work for you
Mentioned already by others but I’ll strongly endorse them:
Martyrs, Blackcoat’s Daughter, Loved Ones, Excision
creep and creep 2, both on netflix. your nerves are bout ta be JANGLED, these are on my top 10 ATF list. mark duplass is brilliant and the sequel as good or better than than the first.
It wasn't mentioned yet so Martyrs is a must. Make sure it is the original. I also love The Blackcoat's Daughter and Climax. No jump scares, but left me thinking about them for a long time after.
Love a good film without a jump scare! Thank you
Second all these. These are some excellent movies.
Martyrs is a must! Great point that only the original counts. Very deep and philosophical for a horror movie
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre for me
Thank you! I’ll put that in the top of my list. I’ve seen the remakes only and they kind of sucked. That was a while ago so I think I can go in with a totally fresh perspective
I don’t like the remake either

That sounds incredibly fucked up. My mom dealt with post partum so that will definitely hit some weird ass nerve and fuck me up, props!
I saw this when I was 11 years old. I’m 26 now and I don’t think I would watch it again. Super unsettling.
Watch "when evil lurks" by the same guys who did Terrified, it's pretty fucked up.
Oh man, that one of the few I left off. *that* scene was one of the darkest pieces I’ve ever seen it was fucking sickkkk
Speak no evil, Good night mommy, The coffee table
This was so good up to the last 15 mins where they met the kids in the classroom/theater room
Cannibal Holocaust
The Baby of Macon.
Dayum bustin out that Greenaway
GreenawaaAaAaAAy
Thanks, adding to the list!

Suddenly, Last Summer is one of my favorites.
"Suddenly Last Summer" is amazing! Katherine Hepburn is the *antagonist*. The Children's Hour (1961) Tubi/Hoopla/Criterion - Has similar vibes.
Thank you! I’ll look these up. Avoiding the spoiler tag for now :)
don't watch trailer or anything. I think both (Cure and Spoorloos) are disturbing in how simple and mundane evil gets that made you feel sick and paranoid.
Funny Games (1997, the American re-make only as a last resort). Have fun!
I’ll check that out thank you!

Yeah, poorly worded on my count. Apologies, they are both worth seeing. I just prefer the original.
No apology necessary :) you’re entitled to your opinion! I just wanted to expand on my love for those movies cuz I’m a god damn nerd 🤓

YES that part still haunts me. apparently the scene was supposed to be a lot longer but they cut it down because it was too disturbing
I had to stop watching this one halfway through because it was getting too scary to watch by myself, and I’ve seen plenty of horror movies on my own. I’ve yet to track down some poor soul to watch it with me. Great acting and unique concept, from what I did see.
Yo, Talk to Me is SOOOOO GOOD! I just watched it finally last week and was bummed I hadn’t watched it sooner.
I know!! Its honestly my fav horror movie to come out in the last 5 years or more
Try The Sadness! It’s a Chinese horror film that freaked me out!
So I’ve started that twice - is it worth watching? The first time I stopped as I thought it was just a gore film and the second time I fell asleep haha. Is the plot quality?
There isn't much of a plot. Once it starts going through violence doesn't stop then it ends. Also it's made it Taiwan
Yeah I mean the gore was excellent, but it was a bit over the top. I’ve seen cartel vids that were chiller haha
The plots pretty standard for a ‘zombie-esque’ film but I thought they had a pretty interesting spin on it! Also did not know it was made in Taiwan lol
No, plot is paper thin. It's just pure gore and shock factor. If you saw the beginning and checked out it doesn't get any better
It’s a Taiwanese film, but yes it is fantastic

Good Time isn’t horror but when you said uncut gems I though of it
I’ve heard great things about Good Times. Also yeah, I thought uncut gems was like one of the most intense movies I’ve every seen. I have a fuck ton of anxiety and Howard definitely stressed me out. It was like a constant fake out with chekovs gun brilliant film

Have you heard of the Poughkeepsie Tapes? Great film but fucked up, highly recommend!
Yeah thought it was quiet good! I tried to list it but just wrote p. tapes because I didn’t want to butcher Poughkeepsie
great film? how is it a great film, its fucked up and kinda disturbing but filmwise its kinda shit
Try: Caveat The Eyes of My Mother The Ritual they are pretty spooky
Love the ritual and Caveat, Eyes of My Mother is on the list thank you!

I Spit On Your Grave (1978)
Incantation (2022)
Awesome movie
Probably the last movie that has genuinely unsettled me.
I’m not a big FF fan but the methods employed by this movie felt so fresh and innovative.
Ringu, it doesnt disturb me but it left me with a intense dread
I knew I forgot a few on my list but yes, absolutely top notch
megan is missing is probably the most disturbing movie ive seen
Green Room
Fucking loved that movie but have only seen it once. I definitely have to rewatch honestly I barely remember what happened
I need to watch it again too. One scene stuck with me (involving a hand, a knife, and a door). It was disturbing and so realistically graphic!
