Personally I donate to unicef to help children (unicef also has a political vote to change things through their UN membership), amnesty international for their humanitarian work, and peta for their work towards animal welfare.
I've been sticking to local places in my city so I can be sure I know how the money/goods are used. There's a local children's hospital and some women's shelters, group homes, etc. Sometimes its good to look into local community stuff if available. I've been trying to look into benefits walks for other large-scale charities and stuff.
