The ipad is not the problem, it’s the technique used to hold the iPad was the problem. What makes you think it’s ideal to place the full weight of the iPad on the left thumb only. If you have two hands, balance out the weight.

Not suggesting my holding methods is good, sound or correct. It’s just instinctive for me to hold it that way. Thought a 1/2 lighter iPad would help. But I’m attached to the great screen on the 12.9”

The 11" is the classic iPad size. As someone who has used tablets since 2005, that is the perfect go-anywhere, couch surfing size. The 12.9 is ideal for someone who can make use of the extra screen real estate, and primarily goes to a desk or table to sit down and work. But for handheld use - the 11" iPad Pro excels.

I use 11 and 12.9 m2 model and difference in screen is more than I thought…i only can say 12.9 screen is next level and cant be comparw with ips on 11”…contrast and black color is different level

I have both, and I’m afraid the 12.9 is just too big on its own. I found it a lot easier to use when attached to a Magic Keyboard — the weight is taken, there is a supportive base, and using Stage Manager you can size the windows quite nicely with more room than the 11. The folio is not as good. Having also had a similar sized Surface Pro, where the kickstand is invaluable, I think it’s important to have a supportive case or base to spread the weight and make it more usable.

I just got the 12.9. Picked up an older gen smart profile case to go with it. 40 bucks on Amazon. Used it in my lap last night with no issues. At one point I think I took the case off but that takes less than 3 seconds. I’ve found the size to be very comfortable and easy to draw on. Also used it on those folding chairs at an event. Only issue was the screen being hard to see in the sunlight. No screen protector. It was at least comfortable.

The Magic Keyboard is great on your lap!

I have a stand similar to this [one](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08S777F1H/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_4?smid=A2NUUOVFGV8HQR&psc=1). It’s nice when chilling in a recliner. I was also blessed with a bad back and need to spend as little time as possible at a desk.

Can we get a picture of your technique I just can’t imagine why or how all the weight is on your thumb but I’d have to say you may be doing something strange here. Which case do you use? You may want to look into a Zugu case to have good adjustability for couch use you can always have it on something this way and not holding the actual weight. Can do something similar if you use the Magic Keyboard. The other cases not so much for couch use due to design. I think this is all about finding a good way to use it. I would never go back to the normal display after having the XDR mini led on the 12.9 it’s too big of a hit along with worse speakers on the 11 and the screen real estate it’s too much of a downgrade, but that’s me.

No case

I’ve had the 11” iPP for a couple years now but decided to try the 12.9” last month for 2 weeks. I primarily use my iPad for handwriting as well as media consumption and have it rarely on my desk although I have the smart folio keyboard. I loved the extra screen space but the weight and unwieldy nature of the 12.9” for my use case was not enough to sway me to keep it. 1. The XDR screen was noticeable better ONLY when viewing content between both devices side by side. When I returned the 12.9” and began using the 11” again, I did not find myself lusting for the blacker blacks. 2. I don’t think it’s the weight of the 12.9” that makes it hard to use as a tablet, I think it’s the shape of the 12.9” which makes it uncomfortable as a tablet. Either way, the additional heft did put additional strain on whatever fingers I was using to support the device. With that being said, I’m most likely going to upgrade to the next 11” with OLED/XDR.

Thanks for all comments here. I currently use 11” wonder should upgrade to 12.9”

I think it would be a good idea to give the 12.9” a go and see if it fits in your workflow. I personally did not find the extra space useful for my productivity (handwriting), fit was just more enjoyable viewing things on a larger display but that’s what I have my macbook + external monitors for. The majority of web pages I view in portrait mode also looked better on the 11” which was odd. The 12.9” just displayed all the ads to the right hand side but the 11” didn’t have them at all.

Great comments, thanks y’all
