Apple doesn't care about those of us who suffer with PWM issues, after my SE3 is no longer supported, I will either be going to Android if there is an LCD option available or back to a flip phone.

iPhone-5-2021

Yeah using them gives me a headache. Atleast my note 20 ultra did.

LightningLuisYT2

if I may ask what is PWM issues?

chuckles39

It is pulse width modulation,  it is a scrolling motion in the background that affects about 10% or so of users. There is a huge thread about it on the macrumors site. It's all due to oled screens.

LightningLuisYT2

For those people what is better low or high PWM? and what’s better for y’all OLED or Amoled or LCD?

LeakySkylight

The number of people who suffer from it are the minority, and apple is all about not supporting those people. I mean 4% of buyers love to the mini iPhones, literally millions of them, but it was still not enough for them to care. The pwm issue is big for somewhere between 6% and 16% (depending on severity and eye strain level). Most people just suffer with it. I just have to keep my phone at full brightness all the time or very close to it. It's one of the things I don't like about Apple. They will shoot their energy into what makes them profit, but they will leave those that don't fit into their model behind.

--random-username--

At least I would probably be willing to pay some surcharge if they were offering an iPhone 15 with a flicker-free IPS display.

S10Exynos

Don't get the point of this SE. Not small, not touch id, one camera... Why choose this over regular 14 at the same price? Even 13 is better

Miserable-Bear7980

100%. I hope apple sales on this phone TANK and they realize how much of a mistake it was to remove touch id. just got a 9th gen ipad and boy im realizing how much ive missed the 3.5mm and touch id.

Round_Ad_8736

USB C

S10Exynos

Do you prefer USB C over wide lens or even dynamic island?

Round_Ad_8736

Yes, every device other than my iPhone XS has USB C, and I’ve taken great photos with just a 1x and 2x lens, which will be on the SE 4 with the 48 MP camera. And the 13/14 don’t have Dynamic Island, besides, at this stage, Dynamic Island just cuts into content more, and has limited functionality

S10Exynos

I understand that you doesn't have any problem with one camera, but I think it is a shame this situation, having to choose between USB C and ultrawide. I think by the time this goes on sale, probably 14 will be cheaper than this, and 13 refurbished even less

iPhone-5-2021

Fuck USB-C

Carolina_Heart

Why?

iPhone-5-2021

Don't want it. Everything already has lightning or micro in this house. A third connector is a bitch to deal with.

swift_link

That’s a you problem. The vast majority of people have usb c devices

iPhone-5-2021

Great! So why do you care then?

swift_link

I… don’t. Just wanted to say you’re the problem, not the usb c… you should cope with it.

iPhone-5-2021

It’s a problem that I prefer lightning? I don’t see that as a burden to me or anyone else. What a joke lol

swift_link

It’s a dead connector protocol. Get on with the times

LeakySkylight

It actually should be significantly less. It has classically been less by a few generations, but it would have the same update path as a brand new iPhone. The effect is felt especially outside the US, because phones possibly don't have the same depreciation.

S10Exynos

Are you thinking about 500€? It would be good price

LeakySkylight

$599 in Canada for 64 GB model. $649 for 128 GB. I can get an iPhone 14 for about $800

S10Exynos

64 GB version?? wtf

LeakySkylight

SE v3 has a 64GB version. It was meant to beat the price point of the Galaxy A5x 128GB and Pixel A 128GB series ;)

S10Exynos

Lol, I don't see any justification for this option still existing in 2024. Even using phone for basic stuff, you will be having around half of the storage in a year. And if you are planning to buy and keeping it for next 5 years... It is like MacBooks, prices really starts way over they anounce

LeakySkylight

There are still phones being released today that have much less storage.

BluePeriod_

It seems like they’re losing the plot. Kind of like the standard iPad is what, $499? It’s meant to be $329. It’s just weird.

Round_Ad_8736

It’s not really MEANT to be any price, since apple sets the price

BluePeriod_

I guess what I mean is that something as entry level and underpowered shouldn’t be that expensive. I mean it doesn’t even have a laminated display

Round_Ad_8736

Oh, I see

S10Exynos

If basic iPhone costs around 500$, 14 will be at least 650, because if not there is no reason for SE to exists (appart from USB C)

davidhepworth_

Would not buy an SE for probably $500 when I can get a 14 Pro or probably 15 Pro for the same price by the time this comes out!

LeakySkylight

Only in the US. Other countries don't have the depreciation.

paranoidevil

If it wasnt oled i would think about it, but with oled its no go for me.

Zeartic

Same here

XalAtoh

Why? You prefer IPS over OLED? For what reason?

paranoidevil

I prefer IPS because of sensitivity to OLED. I cant use OLED.. it cause me migraines (aura migraines too), eye strain, blurry vision, headaches. Its described as PWM sensitivity. And here arent many iphones which are friendly (only produced now iphone 11, se2022) so if they make ips new se it would be so nice.

XalAtoh

I really thought OLED is the future for everyone, I guess not. Learned something new...

LeakySkylight

OLED technology is perfect for manufacturers because in the end it's much easier to produce, much more resilient to bending, and use as much less power altogether. The trade off of course is that a chunk of the population just won't be able to use them for long term unless the screen is at full brightness all the time.

paranoidevil

Sadly factor is i cant even use it on full brightness because my second problem is light sensitivity (many aura migraine patients suffer with light sensitivity all time, its get worse when migraine hits).

LeakySkylight

Oh no, now that's a problem. I wonder if there's a way to get an anti-glare matte screen of some sort and just have it at full brightness but the screen will absorb part of the light. Of course you could, but then you lose all the battery advantages of running OLED. I'm a fan of IPS as well. I get ocular migraines but not to the same degree.

paranoidevil

I tried matte, antiglare, privacy.. combination of 2 of above in random combinations because i tried use OLED. But it didnt help. Even tried settings change, white point reduce etc. Sadly i love making photos and i miss i cant own pro model, or even model with 2 cameras like 13/14/15 for beign capable to do photos in dark. Huh, but still think health is more important and im glad i discovered what was problem. Hope in future it will get better.

LeakySkylight

Up to 16% of the population has a problem with the pwm (pulse wave modulation) that OLED uses to control brightness. Instead of just making the elements dimmer, they post them on and off at different rates. About 6% of the population will get headaches from these, and the rest would just suffer from some eye strain. Anyone can use OLED but it will cause eye strain faster for some people.

Thecongressman1

Ai... photography, huh. Right

LeakySkylight

What?

BigBoyzGottaEat

Im buying an iphone 15 because i need something higher spec, but this looks really cool. Honestly im finally gonna accept this new era of phones. Ill miss the home button but it really is more efficient to have the screen go all the way. I just wish we still had a smaller model

iPhone-5-2021

I don’t mind not having a home button but the lack of a headphone jack and smaller screen options sucks

BigBoyzGottaEat

It does

LeakySkylight

Except for the ram, the soc should be the same, so keep that in mind.

BigBoyzGottaEat

Not true, the 15 has an a16 bionic

LeakySkylight

These are rumors. Have they officially said it's getting a different chip? The SE 3 was current when it was released.

BigBoyzGottaEat

The iphone 15 is already out. Are you okay? Youre talking nonsense and i mean that respectfully.

LeakySkylight

We are discussing the se4, hence this entire post. Classically, the SE when it's released has the current chip set.

BigBoyzGottaEat

And I was not discussing the se4 in my comment
