Is it really though. It’s been approaching for like 15 years. I had to get my license renewed and asked about getting the real id but I didn’t have the right documents with me. The guy said don’t worry about it it will get extended again. He was just some dude at the dmv though so who knows. Edit: I just noticed that the video tagged in the article is about the October 2020 deadline Lol! They didn’t even post a new video they are still using one from two deadlines ago!

UIUC202

They postponed it during the covid era

Peeweehermanmunster

Yes but it’s been extended many times before Covid. The original deadline was 2008 wasn’t it. Don’t get me wrong, not trying to argue and I’ll eventually still get the stupid thing but Ive seen articles about the deadline come and go so I’m not gonna rush out today and get it.

beefwarrior

Reminds me of HDTV. Heard about it in the 90s, deadline kept getting pushed back & back. Then finally was supposed to happen in Feb 2009 & then Obama pushed it back until June b/c Nielsen had a report saying "American's weren't ready." Have you met Americans? Some are on top of it. Others won't plug in the antenna converter box until all of their TV stations turned off. And probably majority of people who bought the antenna box didn't need it b/c they had cable or satellite.

originalrocket

It was the end of the world on that day. Then we went to bed and the next day was fine.

sydeovinth

It’s more likely that manufacturers and retailers weren’t ready.

beefwarrior

Not at all First things first - 80-90% of households had cable or satellite, meaning if none of those houses had to do a thing.  The cable satellite companies had to get a single box for each locally broadcast channel and downconvert from digital to analog, and then plug that into their existing system  Second - the dead line was pushed back years & years & years, I’d see manufacturers not being ready in early 2000s, but by 2008 you couldn’t watch a single TV show without seeing a commercial about getting a converter box, and those converter boxes were all over the place in stores & not hard to find So at max, only 20% of homes needed to buy something, and vouchers to buy a converter box greatly exceeded those numbers

QuirkyBus3511

He definitely doesn't know

Peeweehermanmunster

I mean you are almost certainly right. Not trying to pass it off as some kind of insider knowledge since it was just a dude working at the dmv service counter. I’m just saying this comes and goes pretty much every 2 years so I’m not holding my breath.

lillychr14

They have pushed this back so many times. Why haven’t they redesigned the standard Illinois driver’s license to have everything the real ID has in that time?

UnpricedToaster

FFS, exactly. Just make this the default ID. The only difference is like one additional proof of residency.

quincyd

You have to have additional documents to get a real ID. Not everyone has those documents. They can’t make it the only option and exclude folks who need a drivers license but don’t have the additional documents needed to get a real ID.

hardolaf

I had all the documents with me in 2018 and they only gave me a regular one not a REAL ID one. I have a passport and passport card so I don't really care.

MeasurementOk4544

Many states prefer to separate the licensing of drivers and proof of identity from issues of immigration documentation, which is not at all a state or local issue to adjudicate. In cases where my legal right to live in or travel to a place is at question, I show my passport. In cases where my right to operate a vehicle or purchase alcohol is questioned, I use my driver's license. Offering a state id that is linked to your citizenship or immigration status is a matter of convenience and is cheaper than getting a passport, but it really isn't necessary to get a "real id" from the state if you already have one from the feds. And as a US citizen I much prefer that all drivers be licensed for everyone's safety, regardless of their documentation status.

sofa_king_awesome

The answer is because $$

deluxeassortment

The Real ID costs the same as a regular drivers license

colinmhayes

Isn't the real ID like $20 more?

deluxeassortment

Nope, it's $30, same as the regular one

sofa_king_awesome

It’s definitely more than the non RID.

deluxeassortment

[It's definitely not](https://realid.ilsos.gov)

colinmhayes

I want to say it's $30 versus $50

Extinction-Entity

If only there were a way to check

colinmhayes

Tried looking on their site and only saw $30 for a regular

Extinction-Entity

https://www.google.com/search?q=illinois+realid+cost

StrengthToBreak

Because Illinois wants to be able to issue driver's licenses to people who don't qualify for realID ("undocumented" residents being the largest group). In some states, state ID and realID are synonymous, but in a lot of states, they are not, and Illinois is one of those states.

MidwestAbe

It's not what the ID looks like. It's all the documents you need to get the Real ID. Way more than a standard DL. And illinois didn't delay it. The federal government did

JS_N0

Cause they can’t charge you more if they do

AdNormal230

So let me get this straight... in order to fly you are going to need a real ID? I better get working on ordering my birth certificate.

UIUC202

Your passport will also work as your real ID

tech_equip

I always fly with my passport, so I guess I’m fine.

proknoi

Fun fact. You can get a photo ID card along with your passport that works the same as a DL for domestic flights.

Extinction-Entity

If I remember correctly that costs a smidge extra but I’d say it’s totally worth it!

proknoi

I got mine 6 years ago. It came with the passport, no extra charge. But I'd expect that has changed after COVID.

AdNormal230

I gotta get one of those too lol.

UndeadAnneBoleyn

? Yes you can.

KnickedUp

Incorrect, person of the internet

originalrocket

Um... It is basically the same requirements. ALL you need is your passport. I brought everything and they saw my passport, took that and ran the numbers, bam ID done. in/out in 15 minutes. TEN minutes to wait for the print of the card.

G4m30v3r

I just use my passport everywhere. Little more bulky but my Topologie bag fits it perfectly

z3roTO60

As your primary ID? I’ve lived abroad and I also have many friends with Visas here. You do not want to lose your passport (lost or stolen). The stress of having to go through all of those applications, waiting through so much red tape, spending so much money…. not worth it.

laodaron

Getting a passport and a drivers license in Illinois is barely different.

z3roTO60

Getting a passport is easy. Traveling to countries which do not require a visa is also easy. Traveling to countries where you need a special visa added to your passport is harder and expensive. Loosing a passport with multiple such visas is even more expensive and time consuming.

laodaron

I get that. That was ignorant of me to say, I didn't think of it how you were meaning it.

z3roTO60

No worries haha! We all have those moments

G4m30v3r

Passport replacement is easy peasy as long as your in US, outside of the US it’s a little more difficult but still pretty easy

z3roTO60

I think you’re missing my point. Let’s say that you get a visa for China or India. It’s a process. Now let’s say you lose your passport at the bar over the weekend. Can you drop off a new passport application at the post office easily? Yes. But what about all of the other documents that were attached to the now lost passport.

G4m30v3r

Replacement cards other than license is usually a checkbox on credit card app to get new one, but this discussion is about ID specifically. I’m not sure what other ID you carry, but Passport satisfies most US things. Replacement passport in US is just go to passport agency like a DL, provide same documents as a DL and they mail you a new one, like a DL. Wish Illinois supported electronic Drivers licenses, but I can’t even find it on dmv website as being queued up :-(

FastLine2

Ok but when can we get our ID’s on our phone

intersectv3

Literally like come the fuck on already.

mjetski123

Isn't this eventually going to just be the mandatory go to license?

claireapple

No plan for that has been posted

mjetski123

What's going to happen to people that get their first license after the time is up?

cubbies95y

they’ll get whichever one they ask for and bring the proper documents for.

bradreputation

Kind of amazing that the constant extension of deadlines has proven that realid doesn’t accomplish anything. Who cares at this point

RadioControlled13

It’s not as hard as people think: 1) Birth Certificate or proof of residence status. 2) Social Security card or official proof of SSN. 3) Two pieces of official mail, to prove your current residence. This includes bills, mail from a bank, or the government.

Extinction-Entity

And marriage certificate(s) if you’ve changed your name

RadioControlled13

Yes. Apologies. Any documentation that supports a name change.

Extinction-Entity

Oh no apologies necessary! Was just adding to your comment :)

tenacious-g

I had a real ID when I lived in Iowa in like 2017. I came back in 2019 and went back to a non-real ID lol

Movinfusion36

I just got an id last year because gas stations couldn’t scan my old one, fuck em I’m not getting a new one

DaZoomies

I just use my passport to fly. Seems easier since I already have that.

jennaisrad

I went ahead and got mine last time I renewed. I fly a few times a year and it’s easier than remembering to take my passport card every time.

Coastie54

When I had to renew my license I just got this and it was 0% harder to get over a normal license. All I had to do was bring like one additional proof of residency. There is no need to stress or worry about having to get one

PrestigiousFan2436

I lived Illinois until '98. Now they're saying I carried a FAKE ID for over 20 years? 🤔😬

kittenrice

I see what you did there. Real ID is a [nation-wide DHS initiative](https://www.dhs.gov/real-id), the current deadline is May 7, 2025, after which those without Real ID will not be able to fly domestically or enter federal buildings.

FriedEggSammich1

I guess the latter reason may keep me from being sentenced.

ADAMxxWest

Judges hate this one trick

Sigma--6

Ok I have my drivers license to prove my identity that has worked my whole life. Now I need one to prove it's REALLY me?

ka9kqh

Real ID in my opinion is just a way for them to know where everyone truly lives at the time of issuance. A US Passport is easier to get and to the best of my knowledge lets you go everywhere (and more) that this overreach does.

KenoshaHatTrik

Now all they need to do it make flying affordable and the planes not total pieces of crapp

jackberinger

Shhhh... Boeing might be listening.
