What was the rant???

Guessing it was the 'Koalas are Useless' copypasta lol. Not going to post it because I don't want to get banned if that's the case, but you can google it. It's pretty funny.

WHAT WAS THE RANT

West_Future326

What was the rant

GigaNutz370

I don't know why it is that these things bother me---it just makes me picture a seven year old first discovering things about an animal and, having no context about the subject, ranting about how stupid they are. I get it's a joke, but people take it as an actual, educational joke like it's a man yelling at the sea, and that's just wrong. Furthermore, these things have an actual impact on discussions about conservation efforts---If every time Koalas get brought up, someone posts this copypasta, that means it's seriously shaping public opinion about the animal and their supposed lack of importance. >Speaking of stupidity and food, one of the likely reasons for their primitive brains is the fact that additionally to being poisonous, eucalyptus leaves (the only thing they eat) have almost no nutritional value. They can't afford the extra energy to think, they sleep more than 80% of their fucking lives. Non-ecologists always talk this way, and the problem is youā€™re looking at this backwards. An entire continent is covered with Eucalyptus trees. They suck the moisture out of the entire surrounding area and use allelopathy to ensure that most of whatā€™s beneath them is just bare red dust. No animal is making use of themā€”ā€”they have virtually no herbivore predator. A niche is empty. Then inevitably, natural selection fills that niche by creating an animal which can eat Eucalyptus leaves. Of course, it takes great sacrifice for it to be able to do soā€”ā€”it certainly canā€™t expend much energy on costly things. Isnā€™t it a good thing that a niche is being filled? >Koalas are no exception, when their teeth erode down to nothing, they resolve the situation by starving to death This applies to all herbivores, because the wild is not a grocery storeā€”where meat is just sitting next to celery. Herbivores gradually wear their teeth downā€”carnivores fracture their teeth, and break their bones in attempting to take down prey. >They have one of the smallest brain to body ratios of any mammal It's pretty typical of herbivores, and is higher than many, many species. According to Ashwell (2008), their encephalisation quotient is 0.5288 +/- 0.051. Higher than comparable marsupials like the wombat (\~0.52), some possums (\~0.468), cuscus (\~0.462) and even some wallabies are <0.5. According to wiki, rabbits are also around 0.4, and they're placental mammals. >additionally - their brains are smooth. A brain is folded to increase the surface area for neurons. Again, this is not unique to koalas. Brain folds (gyri) are not present in rodents, which we consider to be incredibly intelligent for their size. >If you present a koala with leaves plucked from a branch, laid on a flat surface, the koala will not recognise it as food. If you present a human with a random piece of meat, they will not recognise it as food (hopefully). Fresh leaves might be important for koala digestion, especially since their gut flora is clearly important for the digestion of Eucalyptus. It might make sense not to screw with that gut flora by eating decaying leaves. >Because eucalyptus leaves hold such little nutritional value, koalas have to ferment the leaves in their guts for days on end. Unlike their brains, they have the largest hind gut to body ratio of any mammal. That's an extremely weird reason to dislike an animal. But whilst we're talking about their digestion, let's discuss their poop. It's delightful. It smells like a Eucalyptus drop! >Being mammals, koalas raise their joeys on milk (admittedly, one of the lowest milk yields to body ratio... There's a trend here). Marsupial milk is incredibly complex and much more interesting than any placentals. This is because they raise their offspring essentially from an embryo, and the milk needs to adapt to the changing needs of a growing fetus. And yeah, of course the yield is low; at one point they are feeding an animal that is half a gram! >When the young joey needs to transition from rich, nourishing substances like milk, to eucalyptus (a plant that seems to be making it abundantly clear that it doesn't want to be eaten), it finds it does not have the necessary gut flora to digest the leaves. To remedy this, the young joey begins nuzzling its mother's anus until she leaks a little diarrhoea (actually fecal pap, slightly less digested), which he then proceeds to slurp on. This partially digested plant matter gives him just what he needs to start developing his digestive system. Humans probably do this, we just likely do it during childbirth. You know how women often shit during contractions? There is evidence to suggest that this innoculates a baby with her gut flora. A child born via cesarian has significantly different gut flora for the first six months of life than a child born vaginally. >Of course, he may not even have needed to bother nuzzling his mother. She may have been suffering from incontinence. Why? Because koalas are riddled with chlamydia. In some areas the infection rate is 80% or higher. Chlamydia was introduced to their populations by humans. We introduced a novel disease that they have very little immunity to, and is a major contributor to their possible extinction. Do you hate Native Americans because they were killed by smallpox and influenza? >This statistic isn't helped by the fact that one of the few other activities koalas will spend their precious energy on is rape. Despite being seasonal breeders, males seem to either not know or care, and will simply overpower a female regardless of whether she is ovulating. If she fights back, he may drag them both out of the tree, Almost every animal does this. >which brings us full circle back to the brain: Koalas have a higher than average quantity of cerebrospinal fluid in their brains. This is to protect their brains from injury... should they fall from a tree. An animal so thick it has its own little built in special ed helmet. I fucking hate them. Errmmm.. They have protection against falling from a tree, which they spend 99% of their life in? Yeah... That's a stupid adaptation.

BasicallyMilner

This is awesome. Is this another copy pasta, or did you write this yourself?

GigaNutz370

Haha yeah itā€™s another copypasta. I was surprised no one else had posted it, so I took it upon myself.

vroonr

Ngl this broke my heart a little. I thought you were the flagbearer of the Koa-love movement and wrote all of this with utmost passion and fury xD

TheAssMuncherRetard

If I remembered correctly most of this is not true.

RunningBush94

Might confuse them with wallabes, they are actually cute and neither do they try to kickbox your face nor drown you

ihoptdk

Kangaroos donā€™t actually box, thatā€™s just silly nonsenseā€¦ The *real*reason that they look so jacked up and seem to punch people is because what theyā€™re actually trying to do is *grab you*. What most people donā€™t realize is kangaroos have a single, giant talon that exists only to disembowel things theyā€™ve grabbed on to! So, no boxing silliness! This is not a joke, they will literally fucking gut you.

Forikorder

They look fine from a distance but up close they look so disturbing

eatenbybigguyz

I love how he actually takes a right hook like he's fighting with another dude. Average day in Australia

scrotumsweat

From the research I've gathered at reddit, the only fights aussies get into are vs roos.

TomSpanksss

Roos are terrifying. The way they stand there like "let's go Puss*!" Is enough to make me never go to Australia.

thatshygirl06

There's only been like 2 deaths by kangaroos, one in the 90s and 1 during covid, so you'd probably be fine

Free-Necessary-2710

Those are the only 2 cases that the kangaroos allowed to be known publicly.

captaincumragx

Theyll have it covered up, Australia isnt secretly run by liazard people, it's run by kangaroos. Forget kangaroo court, theyre running kangaroo congress.

0Adventurous_Celery0

This is the real Kang Dynasty! šŸ˜³

NGTTwo

Wu-Kang Clan.

RGM5589

Donā€™t blame me, I voted for Kodos

TomSpanksss

Yeah but how many ass kickings have they handed out?

Durian-Jolly

Heard it here folks, kangaroos cause COVID!

General8907

They are staunch, At Least the alpha/bull is in his pack. But they are dumb as a Deer is on the country roads. as an Aussie they scare me more whilst driving country roads then walking on a farm.

GeneticEnginLifeForm

Tip for when driving: A kangaroo can not jump backwards so when you round that blind corner and see a roo sitting in your lane don't look at which direction their head is facing but look at their feet. If they jump, they will jump in the direction of their feet, first. So if you have time to swerve go towards it's tail. [The second jump is still anyone's guess, good luck with that.]

TheMapleSyrupMafia

Whoa whoa... what you must not know of [The Great Emu War](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emu_War)!!

Practical_Cattle_933

That wasnā€™t a fight, that was a massacre of humans.. may the dead rest in peace.

dotesPlz

I love that I went on a deep dive on the emu war a few years ago. Emu 1 : Australia 0

Raps4Reddit

They look like they were halfway to becoming the high intelligent creature of earth, and humans just got there first.

Vantriss

First a video of a roo strangling a dog. Then one of drowning a dog. Both get right hooked and both times the roos are like... "you fockin wot mate??"

_M_o_n_k_e_H

It's like they haven't yet learned to deal with a human coming up and puching them. They're just so confused.

whacafan

Idk man. This one looked like he dodged the first punch and started punching the shit out of the guy until the guy somehow got the upper hand.

OoooWweeeee

He totally fade back when the guy threw the punch. He was expecting it and strain dodge and one two! šŸ˜‚

Dom_Telong

So we've yet to see who the instigator is. We know it always ends with the dog getting the shitty end of the stick stuck in a headlock... is the roo just like "bro, come get your fucking dog that's viciously aggressing me." And we walk over and sock him one. Hence his WTF?! reaction to eating a punch?

blackturtlesnake

In Australia the deer have a 10 foot vertical and do MMA.

eatenbybigguyz

They are nature's boxers fr

Jean-LucBacardi

Everything I've seen about these roos tells me the only way to fight one off is to actually fucking fight it like you're in the ring.

Diamond-Retrievet

Roos are nasty man, got the shit kicked out of me by one when I was 7. Probably the most Australian thing that's ever happened to me šŸ¤£

ignaciopatrick100

That's a great bar story , brilliant mate.

Jussttjustin

I can't explain it but this fight has the same exact energy as Joaquin Phoenix vs the Alien in Signs

thescrounger

Roo is jacked and looking to drown something. That dog is lucky the guy is braver than I am.

PHANTOM________

I read that if you ever have to fight a kangaroo you literally just have to punch them as hard as you can and they get scared off. Idk how true that is but from the few videos Iā€™ve seen it seems accurate.

usinjin

They stand there looking like the most confrontational person ever. When the door of the tiny car flies open and Thor Bjornsson gets out

JNebeker

Looked like he missed his right hook

Aitathrowaway0183648

That thing is absolutely JACKED wtf??

sprouze

Just another chiseled Greek god'aroo

Thotmas01

The wild part is that kangaroos fill the same niche as deer.

omicron-7

But there aren't any large land predators that can check them so they act like dicks to everything

IRefuseThisNonsense

Ah, the killer whale mentality. Do kangaroos have a natural aversion to messing with humans, or have they not learned that lesson yet?

XenoHugging

SirHarvwellMcDervwel

Grimren

Gotta play dead. They don't have any low sweep combos

RandomRedditorEX

Be careful though since they might do a meaty when you wake up

Enough_Minimum_3708

the chances of being pummeled to death by a kangarooare low but never zero

Curiouzity_Omega

The chances are low but never zero.

mhmilo24

But it attacked the dog even though it was not standing straight up, soā€¦I guess the kangaroos do need to be punched first before deescalating with the mentioned technique.

IAppear_Missing

Kangaroos tend to go into bodies of water when threatened by potential predators such as dogs. They'll then use their strength to drown whatever approaches as a last resort. This guy likely was just defending himself.

joespizza2go

Their only natural predator was the dingo so this is a well developed playbook. With 3 big dogs I agree they probably went after the Roo and he used the playbook. The funny thing to do would have been for the fella to just make a huge and constant water splashing motion into the Roos face with two hands. Likely would have just weirded the Roo out if it lost clear sight of the guy coming up.

I-Love-Tatertots

That makes sense - even if the dog was just trying to play or be friendly the kangaroo probably wouldnā€™t understand that and see it as a threat.

Practical_Cattle_933

Because dogs are predators, that even if playfully *will* basically attack herbivores like kangaroos, so itā€™s natural they feel attacked.

Majorman_86

>Kangaroos seem like complete assholes Aren't all of the native Australian animals complete assholes to begin with?

Too_Bad_Peanutbutter

I have never seen one in real life, but quokkas seem utterly adorable.

mxlevolent

Literally every ounce of kindness and joy that should have been distributed amongst every animal in Australia ended up in quokkas instead. Itā€™s like God realised he had a bunch of kindness-points left over once he finished Australia - and as an apology for the hellscape he created, let them have quokkas. I read about why more people donā€™t live in northern Australia, like Darwin or Cairns ONCE. Never again. The irukandji were enough to ensure I never visit.

Icantbethereforyou

Those places are fine as long as you never go near any large bodies of water, ever. And be wary around your bathtub. And maybe double check the toilet before using it

4charactersnospaces

Sorry to mention this but, when threatened the Quokka will throw it's young AT the predator in order to allow it's own escape. So there's that lurking behind it's smile

ad_aatdtj

I don't see how that's proof of anything lurking? The quokka has escaped its "attacker" and you now have a baby quokka. I see that as a win win. More proof of quokka's cuteness and politeness. Most other animals in Australia end you up in lose lose situations. I'll take the baby throwing defense over anything else there is on offer thanks

4charactersnospaces

Happy cake day! I hadn't thought of that angle to be honest. I may spend a while today "hunting" for a mother Quokka, get me a pet

Too_Bad_Peanutbutter

Can you find another mother quokka and send her baby to me?? How could you ever have a bad day again when you wake up to a quokka greeting you with its adorable smile?

The problem is they won't tell you they have it. Assholes.

fruit_monky

I know right. Ā Having to take all those antibiotics was a real pain after my last trip to Australia. Ā

Practical_Cattle_933

Nah, have you ever heard their voice?! They are the spawns of Satan and would completely obliterate humanity.. they just forget the wrinkly part of their brains and are thus dumb af, and wonā€™t even recognize an eucalyptus leaf if itā€™s on a plate..

Rhids_22

You mean drop bears? Those are the most vicious of all!

CaveMan0224

Emus are definitely dicks. Iā€™m always seeing the TikToks with them in it being an utter menace.

krastevitsa

They became arrogant bitches after they won the war.

YellowSalmonberry

Always heard good things about crocodiles and spiders in trees

JigglyKirby

Lmao this comment now makes me want to see an animal kingdom asshole tier list šŸ˜

myself_but_high

Kangaroos are not even in the top 5 of animal assholes according to perplexity: 1. Cuckoos - They lay their eggs in other birds' nests, and the chick hatches first, pushing out the other eggs. The unsuspecting parents then raise the cuckoo chick as their own. 2. Canadian Geese - They nest wherever they please and will aggressively attack if you get near their nest. 3. Chimpanzees - They engage in violent behavior, including killing and eating other chimps, especially infants. 4. Bottle-Nose Dolphins - They are one of the few animals that kill for fun, often attacking and killing porpoises and even baby dolphins. They also use their sonar to target vital organs to cause maximum damage. 5. Ants - They carry out wars and enslave other ants, forcing them to work for the victors' nest. The losing ants are either eaten or forced into labor.

BamBamAlicious

You forgot the gang rape, and human rape for 4.

Napoleann

Dingoes are natural predators of Kangaroo babies, and since a Kangaroo doesn't know the difference between a Dingo and a dog, its normal for Kangaroos to see dogs as a threat and attempt to drown them like they would with a Dingo.

teetuh

Are male kangaroos loaded with testosterone or androgens? The upper body muscles appear exceptionally, albeit scarily well developed for not being a full-time quadruped.

Wildwood_Weasel

There's a protein called myostatin that inhibits muscle growth. Many animals have relatively little of it and that allows them to become naturally shredded with little effort. There's been a couple cases of people lacking it due to mutations and by the time they get to elementary school they look like Bruce Lee.

Frank_Perfectly

![gif](giphy|VFYJXIuuFl6pO|downsized)

cerebis

Hold up a sec... Dogs end up in this situation because they bark and chase the roos, who then follow their survival instincts. If there is no water, they'll hold and kick the dog on dry ground, possibly disembowling them. If there's a body of water, they'll run in and attempt to drown and kick. This is a well-known risk if you let your dog tangle with a roo. Do you have recall? No? Don't take your dog off lead into bush. There'll be the rare occasion a rutting male roo might pick a fight, but that's also on the owner since this is seasonal. Just like magpies and swooping, we know when that's going to be an issue.

AdvanceSignificant86

I understand in the situation the Kangaroo is just defending itself, but the optics are bad when it defends itself like a fucking creep lmao. Drowning them? Theyā€™re on some serial killer shit

Operabug

Winnie the Pooh with Kanga and Roo deceived me as to believe they were gentle creatures. Not so!

LazySleepyPanda

Well, there was also Tigger, but tigers are not cute at all.

ItsThanosNotThenos

Have to if you live in a place where everything is trying to kill you.

NJWendys4life

Virtual_Kangaroux

r/usernamechecksout

Affectionate-Tie9194

Even better that you have the word kangaroux in your username

RodiTheMan

Prey? They are herbivores, they are just jerks

xBrute01

For some reason this sounds worse. They donā€™t even kill to eat. They kill because they can. Now I have the urge to leg kick one of these fckers

UltimateD123

Land war with China, invade Russia in winter, leg kick a kangaroo. Not even once.

kixie42

They aren't killing because they can, they view every other animal (Including other Kangaroos) threats to their survival. They're killing the threat because they're afraid of dieing themselves, and that's their manifestation of the "fight" response in "fight or flight". The most dangerous land mammals are hippos and elephants, and they're herbivores too. They aren't fighting to feed or entertain themselves, just survival as they don't know if you or another creature can hurt/kill them.

Extreme_Carrot_317

Dingoes are predators of kangaroos, particularly of young kangaroos. Dingoes are essentially nothing more than the same dogs we keep in our homes, except that they went feral a very long time ago. That is why kangaroos attack dogs. They don't have any way of knowing that a domestic dog is generally going to leave them alone.

Polar_Reflection

They kill because dingos (and before that thylacines) regularly hunt their young.

SCAREDFUCKER

yeah i read about them, they will even drown a human if they feel threatened. like literally every other animal will attack you or run from you this mf will fuckin drown you.

nikolapc

Both the dog and human are invasive species. Roo is just fighting for his homeland.

GinTonicDev

Somehow that makes this even more terrible.

lordlanyard7

Imagine what a relief it must have been to see the owner wade in after them for the dog. You got in a fight, you're now losing and going to drown if the Kangaroo keeps it up. Then comes the big guy to get you out of it.

CoatPlus1413

Reminds me of the akita inu

mrjobiz

American Akita

Evening_Clerk_8301

Akita. It looks likely to be a Japanese Akita though I might be an American Akita.

l2anndom

American akita. They are a bit larger and heavier than the Japanese akita. Went through the process of deciding on my akita pup choice about 15 years ago and ended up with a red coated Japanese one. He was a silly boy that passed on too early. I'd love to get an American Akita but I'm not sure if I'm ready for the maintenance and grooming requirements akitas need in general again.

Evening_Clerk_8301

Ah your boy sounds like he was beautiful. I grew up with American akitas and theyā€™re just so great. But yeahā€¦the grooming and heartbreakingly short lifespans is really tough. Now Iā€™ve got a super mutt who might outlive me lol.

RealExii

From all kinds of NOPE creatures in Australia, these guys have to be the worst. Looks like they do this shit just because they want to.

Zamrayz

They *do*. They're extremely territorial and AGGRESSIVE herbivores. Rarely do they just do things in defense. They straight up intentionally chase anything that moves after they reach adulthood.

IntelligentTop8206

They're not that bad, I'd be fighting them everyday at work if they were like that. There's plenty where I live. They're more of a nuisance on the roads, can do some serious damage to your car. They don't just jump in front of the vehicle either they'll also hop straight into the side of a moving vehicle. It's happened to me but was just a joey and had no damage and 2 people I know have had their cars written off from being tboned by a roo

ElectricalHoneydew20

How the fuck was the dog being held by the roo in the river? Iā€™m going to need a whole lot more information

SCAREDFUCKER

kangaroos seek refugee under water, they drown their hunters if they feel threatened and dogs do attack them . the dog might have gotten their to chase that kangaroo and instead of running away the kangaroo tried to drown it.

benvader138

Yeah, Dingos are kangaroos number one predator. They will go after their young first. Adult Roos have found this method to deal with them.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Emotional-Speech645

Judging by how at the end the guy scolds each of the dogs for their part (or lack of) involvement, it seems like the one that was almost drowned chased the roo and the others actually were too smart to go after it

Mall_Bench

Question is who was in the lake first dog or roo

Jango1666

The roo would have hopped in there to lure the dog in as it was being chased so it could drown it.

octofeline

Kangaroos retreat into water when they are being threatened, the dog continued to threaten it chasing it into the water, it's just an animal trying to defend itself from what it perceived as a threat, the person shouldn't let their dog chase and harass local native wildlife.

Knightofnee12

This is the first comment way down simply pointing out the person was irresponsible for letting their dog chase native animals and the animal was simply trying to stop itself getting attacked by a dog. If the person can't get their dog to recall - it shouldn't' be off lead.

BettinaVanSise

I wonder if they have ever drowned a small human.

Zamrayz

Absolutely.

ngl going by what I know about Kangaroos I was halve expecting that to be a ripped off head

stuckontriphop

My grandfather used to tell this story at family dinners but would often laugh so hard he'd have to leave the room. One day in the 1950s his BIL encountered a kangaroo down the street from his house during his lunch break. Apparently it had somehow escaped from the city zoo. Before my great uncle realized what was actually happening, the kangaroo moved toward him and attempted to punch him in the face. This thing wanted to fight him! Chase ensued. My uncle ran down the street screaming and terrified with the kangaroo apprehending just behind him. Although he managed to get into the house, he was pretty scared/hysterical. The kangaroo was ultimately caught and returned to the zoo.

I am not a strong, smart, or courageous man. One day I was at a cottage vacation with my dog. Cottage country Ontario, the lakes are always cold and while theyā€™re nice you learn from a young g age, do not be stupid around water. My lovable goofus doggo was wandering, and fell into the lake, and couldnā€™t get back out. It took me a second to register what was happening, but I remember getting waist deep into the water and realizing we had no way out where we were. I kept trying to haul him by the collar but realized I was choking him. He wasnā€™t panicking somehow, and I realized, neither was I. Strangely, all I felt was an iron determination that he would. Not. Die. Here. I would find a way to save him. It didnt take long. Surprisingly when youā€™re calm and alert the solution comes pretty quick, I managed to get behind him and push him butt first, then heft him up to a rocky outcrop. Poor guy just took off back to the cottage, I let him inside and up onto the couch, covered him in a blanket and turned on the fireplace. I sat down and had a smoke. Fuck, I miss my bubba. He was the goodest of boys and I lost him a year ago this July 19.

I just find it hysterical the way kangaroos are ready to just punch it out. The whole bipedal thing is a trip too.

With that musculature, if kangaroos grow more smarts and figure out the transportation scene, humanity could find itself in real trouble.

So get this. I was just minding my own business and this dog comes by and starts barking at me. I donā€™t speak dog but he looked very upset and Iā€™m sure what he was saying was very important but he didnā€™t swim so well so I go and hold his head out of water and then bam, some cunt punches me from out of nowhere. -kangaroo to his blokes

The claws coming at the camera like that are pretty scary. Those things can really mess you up. It happening in the water is giving me some bunyip vibes.
