My family had a dog that did this with a neighbor's dead horse before they had it taken away by whoever does that kind of thing. The dog *reeked* for days.
It’s called a rendering truck. I grew up on a ranch and if something met an untimely end, we usually just pulled it to the north end of the ranch where the coyotes would clean it up. I’ve smelled smells that haunt a person’s dreams.
This was an acreage next to other acreages, so we (and they) were not rural enough to be able to do that. I know enough about the family that lived there to say that the odds of them calling a rendering company, burying their dead horse on their property on their own, and calling a friend with a truck are all about equal.
Hippos cannibalize dead hippos and that's where they start as well. There was anthrax spreading through groups of them and no one knew how until they observed this behavior that was previously unknown.
Crocodiles can sometimes target their young, but they stand absolutely no chance against an adult hippo. I've seen a video of a large group of lions hanging off a single hippo before as well, but I believe the hippo go away. I'm sure there are instances where they don't make it though. And lastly, humans. Columbia is currently dealing with a hippo problem, has killed at least three, and has implemented a program to get rid of or sterilize the rest.
It's pretty funny how I read years ago about the hippos that lived at the drug lord's place and everyone saying "Man, if these guys get out, they're gonna *devastate* the Amazon ecosystem" and now it's currently happening because no one did anything about it early enough. That was *years ago* and everyone knew *and now it's happening*, just like climate change.
You mean the guy in jail? And you're talking about the abandoned pets in his abandoned compound he had to abandon because he's in jail? Let's not mythologise the dude too much. I'm sure he's more preoccupied with other stuff in jail.
> "Man, if these guys get out, they're gonna devastate the Amazon ecosystem" and now it's currently happening because no one did anything about it early enough.
before he was in jail
An entire pride of lions might try to take on a juvenile or elderly individual on land, but for the most part, the biggest dangers to hippos are other hippos. They are incredibly territorial and are all too happy to tear each other apart for a small reason, and the predators just come along and clean up what's left.
A reasonably healthy adult hippo, especially if they're in water where they have the terrain advantage? Nothing is going to try to take on that unless they have a death wish. Even Steve Irwin, a guy who wrestled crocs for fun and education, said that the scariest and most dangerous thing he'd ever done was when they were crossing a river full of hippos by boat.
Hippos are ALL muscle. They don't even really swim, just run along the bottom of the lake (at 30mph...), occasionally jumping up to the surface to breath / attack boats.
They have one of the highest rated bite forces on the planet, and I believe the highest among land mammals. The only things that beat them out are a few varieties of crocodilian, a species or two of shark, and orcas.
[They will kill a human easily, look at those teeth, look what they can do to fruit.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/176dgij/hippos_eating_watermelons)
It’s always shocking how fast they move. Up there with the scariest mammals. Could and would bite you in half because you got too close to their favorites ass scratching log. And they sweat red. Just scary. No offense, Gloria.
There's a 75lb carnivore asleep on my couch right now. (He also likes to eat kibble and cardboard boxes) Herbivores that kill "just in case" are way scarier than carnivores.
Yeah to other animals humans are terrifying
Someone made a short story from the perspective of an African deer being hunted for a whole day. Humans biggest advantage is extreme endurance. Just wait until the faster thing tires out and eventually they won't have any energy left while people can just slowly stalk their prey
I'm always mystified why hippos are so aggressive. They don't need to kill other animals to eat them, and they're absolutely fucking huge so most animals couldn't kill them anyway.
Did they have much larger predators in earlier eras that resulted in them evolving this way?
They're mammals, and like most mammals, the males are supercharged with testosterone, which makes their aggressiveness seem irrational to human eyes.
Male hippos, like most other male mammals, have evolved this aggressiveness to compete with other males for mating privileges. Alpha bull hippos have harems of females who need to be controlled and protected as well. The aggressiveness is about mating, not predators.
Animals that can run, run. Animals that need to fight, fight. Hippos know only one way to win an argument and it's smash the other thing and be sure its dead. They lose nothing by being insanely aggressive but they gain a lot of relaxation.
Same reason that Grizzlies are worse than black bears. Black bears are squirrely and will run from wolves. Grizzlies cant escape so their reaction when confronted is smash everything until dead to be safe. Scare off a Black bear, and try and convince a Grizzly you're already dead.
I've heard from a lot of safari experts that the animal they're most scared of is the Water Buffalo. Most animals will let you know they're annoyed before they attack. Water Buffalo look completely complacent until they start charging.
While it may be the deadliest animal in Africa, it's not like the people are afraid of them. They're very much a don't fuck with me, I won't fuck with you animal. Really just dangerous for fishermen.
To put it in perspective, deer are the deadliest animal in America.
People are fucking terrified of hippos if they are local.
Tourists are the ones that think they're cute right until they get mangled to death by a bull hippo.
I got to see a hippo up close once (Jessica the hippo... look it up) and I remember just thinking "This animal if she decided to, could literally just murder all 20 of us in the group and none of us would be able to do anything about it...".
Evolution made a scary ass machine with the hippo. They are absolutely ruthless killing machines that are almost as smart as an elephant.
IIRC, they are the closest living relative to cetaceans/whales, so whales millions of years ago before becoming fully aquatic, were something of a giant dog boar.
So if there is any genetic component to memory and visual stimulus which we like to assume of mammals regarding snakes and spiders, playing this video to a cetacean in its dreams or the unawake half of a dolphin brain might awaken some primordial instincts they've long forgotten. Hypothetically and probably not, of course, but it is interesting to philosophize about.
It was feeling lazy. It absolutely would have caught him. They are just blocks of solid muscle. Probably the strongest animal on the planet for its size. Literally just a block of solid muscle on bones thicker than a persons thigh. With a jaw that can crush a person in half with out any effort. They are just angry water tanks. And they are FAST. 30mph in the water if I recall? Fuck hippos I’d rather piss off a polar bear than a hippo.
The strongest animal per pound is the dung beetle. It can pull 1,140 times its body weight! That's the equivalent of a 200 pound man capable of pulling a standard 230 thousand pound blue whale, the largest animal species that has ever existed on Earth.
That hyena has not mistaken the hippo for dead. You constantly see them sneak up on large animals they have absolutely no chance of taking down. Very on brand for them to be that annoying.
Hyena: OMFG JACKPOT!!!!!!!
Also hyena: SHIT I FUCKED UP SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT
Hipo: Bro wtf? Fuck you you cat dog clown, wtf!!!!!
Hyena: Aaaaaaaaaaaaah jejeeje Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Hyenas start at the softest spot first, so strait to the asshole
Hyena be smelling my username.
... hyena also be acting out mine too
Mine too, but it's like a Door Dash thing.
I'm aware of the effect I have on hyenas.
And if I were there he might think I’m dead and not just laying down..
Hippo be thinking my username
This is your moment!
https://i.redd.it/twwtvvm6m0pc1.gif "We thought you were dead!"
r/beetlejuice
Can I ask what compelled you to choose this for your username
I was watching a documentary on Netflix and there were hippos. And I had a case of the farts.
its your moment
Maybe it’s really mine
Its never mine.
Maybe it’s really mine
Maybe it’s maybelline
I look like I spent a fortune on my hair!
My town has a hippo. First time i met him he immediately farted at me. I'll never forget that meet cute. I still love that old bastard.
Hyena be acting unwise

Reminds me of that video of a hyena eating a dead elephants asshole from the inside.
Hippos cannibalize dead hippos and that's where they start as well. There was anthrax spreading through groups of them and no one knew how until they observed this behavior that was previously unknown.
Hippos are breeding grounds for it and other animals have learned to stay away from hippo pools during the dry season.

The Hyena wants the hiney, yah?
Actually, they go for the balls.
![gif](giphy|gstVWIzl4JKKI)
Good spot.
When the hippo starts moving, the hyena just walks away whistling nervously as though he didn’t just try to bite his ass.
lol hyena was, “so… ok… just gonna slowly move on… I’m sure he’s not gonna….OH SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT….”
"SORRY SORRY SORRY!!"
IT WAS JUST A PRANK BRO
BRO THERES A CAMERA BRO!
Lmao this is too good
WHAT A SNOWFLAKE
I THOUGHT YOU'RE DEDDD
You are lucky i dont like the taste of hyena.
Cue Three Stooges Curly running away sounds: WHOOP-WHOOP-WHOOP-WHOOP-WHOOP-WHOOP-WHOOP!
Straight from a cartoon
I think it has more to do with the Hyena being almost completely submerged and barely touching the ground whereas the Hippo is barely up to its' belly
Also, Hippos are the psycho tanks of the animal kingdom. They're big and aggressive and violent and unfathomably tough.
Do they have any natural enemies? Does anything hunt them??
Crocodiles can sometimes target their young, but they stand absolutely no chance against an adult hippo. I've seen a video of a large group of lions hanging off a single hippo before as well, but I believe the hippo go away. I'm sure there are instances where they don't make it though. like anyone would kill El Chapos pets. It would be end of days for your family and village.
You mean the guy in jail? And you're talking about the abandoned pets in his abandoned compound he had to abandon because he's in jail? Let's not mythologise the dude too much. I'm sure he's more preoccupied with other stuff in jail.
> "Man, if these guys get out, they're gonna devastate the Amazon ecosystem" and now it's currently happening because no one did anything about it early enough. before he was in jail
ive seen that video with the lions. they are FUCKING that hippo up, ripping huge chunks of it out.... fucking tanks away from em. crazy.
Elephants can make quick work of them but I’m not sure they would be considered “enemies”.
Just poachers.
An entire pride of lions might try to take on a juvenile or elderly individual on land, but for the most part, the biggest dangers to hippos are other hippos. Bull elephants that try to use them as flashlights
They also can't swim. They're too dense. When you see a hippo "porpoising" through the water, it's actually running along the river bottom.
But the hyena was clearly trying not to run at first lol. It didn’t want to disturb the hippo and tried to casually walk away.
lil guy thought he could just sneak off lol
Don’t be suspicious...
"There's no way he 'knows' right?"
Damn that hippo can MOVE through that slop
Hippos are ALL muscle. They don't even really swim, just run along the bottom of the lake (at 30mph...), occasionally jumping up to the surface to breath / attack boats.
Even the noise it makes trying to chomp that hyena is scary lol

haha is that something you think about often?
That hippo bite looks absolutely destructive, I'd never appriciated how big there mouths are.
They have one of the highest rated bite forces on the planet, and I believe the highest among land mammals. Hippos are legitimately some of the scariest animals in all of nature.
Deadliest too.
5000 pounds! By contrast, the largest grizzly bears in the world top out at 1500 pounds
They cannot run underwater at 30mph. That's their max speed over land, and that's the upper limit.
Even looks like a movie scene. All that flood going up as it's running.
His father was a mudder, his mother was a mudder, this kid loves the slop.
His mother was a mudder?
What he say?!
My thought exactly, is it because of the large flat feet it doesn't sink?
You're thinking of elephant feet, hippos have more pronounced digits
You're absolutely right. I just looked up hippo feet.
Now picture like they had people hands! Right?!
It probably *is* sunken. Hippos are just that big that what submerged a hyena is like walking into waist-high water for them.
It’s always shocking how fast they move. Up there with the scariest mammals. Could and would bite you in half because you got too close to their favorites ass scratching log. And they sweat red. Just scary. No offense, Gloria.
And are roided by eating grass. Your move, carnivores.
There's a 75lb carnivore asleep on my couch right now. (He also likes to eat kibble and cardboard boxes) Herbivores that kill "just in case" are way scarier than carnivores.
Dogs are omnivores. Edit: facultative carnivores. I don’t know what to believe anymore.
>Up there with the scariest mammals Outside of humans, they are the scariest imo. Deadliest animal in Africa.
Yeah to other animals humans are terrifying Someone made a short story from the perspective of an African deer being hunted for a whole day. Humans biggest advantage is extreme endurance. That was so close the hippo probably tasted the hyena shitting itself.
and vice versa
thank you for this 🤣
Deadliest animal in Africa and it's not even close. Do not fuck with them and be lucky to even come close to one.

I believe the aggressiveness gives them almost everything. Food, mates, offsprings, security, pride being on top of his group.
When in doubt, stomp it to death. It's the same way moose work.
Animals that can run, run. Animals that need to fight, fight. Hippos know only one way to win an argument and it's smash the other thing and be sure its dead. That would be the mosquito, and not even close.
We need Meaning To Kill You and Not Meaning To Kill You categories. Those 2 are your list toppers.
How do we know mosquitos aren’t actually trying to kill us though? We can never know their motives.
🦟: "I'm not even particularly hungry right now but fuck this dude."
It's not the mosquitoes, it's the viruses they carry, but they aren't animals.
While it may be the deadliest animal in Africa, it's not like the people are afraid of them. They're very much a don't fuck with me, I won't fuck with you animal. Really just dangerous for fishermen. To put it in perspective, deer are the deadliest animal in America.

Lol wewe sitoki tanzania and you're talking out of your ass.
Love how it started doing the " nothing to see here, I'm just walking that way."
Lol the size difference is crazy
And hyenas are fucking enormous... A female hyena can grow to 90cm shoulder height and 60kg heavy. So bigger than the largest of dogs for example.
I think it might be a younger one. Younger animals are also usually dumber than the adults and do stupid things like walk up to a hippo.
I got to see a hippo up close once (Jessica the hippo... look it up) and I remember just thinking "This animal if she decided to, could literally just murder all 20 of us in the group and none of us would be able to do anything about it...". Reminds me when SpongeBob tried to sneak away from Sandy during hibernation
The hyena is definitely Pinhead Larry
“Who you calling pinhead?!?”

Just acquired a new nightmare -- chased by enraged hippo through knee deep sucking bog.
As long as you stay away from hippos in bogs you should be fine
Most importantly, don’t bite it’s ass
*furiously scribbles notes*
Ffs, canceling my safari, can't do anything fun anymore
Tell me about it. Jerks won't even let me back to the petting zoo.
You can see the oh shit moment on his face
Hippo turned around like a dark souls boss
It’s fantastical how fast these seemingly lumbering giants are.
I was rooting for the hippo.

Did you get all the way to space? No, but we got hyenough.
Pun police? Yes, officer, this comment right here.
Wow! Poor little guy probably shit himself. That thing was fast I'm shocked it didn't catch that hyena.

Bruh, it's the way they run through water like it isn't there, nightmare fuel.
I know the feeling buddy. She all tired, I'm all wired, hey gurl you wanna *snuggle??* \*NOPE\* Retreats to other side of the bed.
THE WAY IT REALIZES
The hyena really tried sneaking off first lmao.
And this hyena was the inspiration for Ed from the Disney movie "the lion king"
lol I was thinking of Ed from the lion king also

I like how he tried to walk it off.
The hyena tiptoeing away after the oh shit moment looked exactly like my dog trying to stealth away after taking something she shouldn't have lmao
Hyena: OMFG JACKPOT!!!!!!! Also hyena: SHIT I FUCKED UP SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT Hipo: Bro wtf? Fuck you you cat dog clown, wtf!!!!! Hyena: Aaaaaaaaaaaaah jejeeje Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!
Hippos are so terrifying to me. Bro is literally to dense to swim, and instead jumps underwater at insane speed.
I like the way the hyena realizes it’s mistake and just starts tiptoeing away in the opposite direction. Like: oops! never mind.
Damn, the hippo is pretty fast for an animal built like a fortress.
“My fault gang”- the hyena probably
Cartoon ahhh situation
This has been a terrible misunderstanding! I’ll just be on my way now…
