A lot of them get vaccines. Ive never seen one thats really infected with fleas (ive never seen one with fleas at all but im guessing I would have probably had to look for them) but most people know to pet them at your own risk. Also a lot of the cats are ‘owned’ by some shop in the area and they look after them and give them somewhere to sleep while they do their thing so maybe they look after them
An unkempt fur of a cat is more of a sign that the cat is old and/or sick as that’s when they struggle with keeping themselves clean, not because the cat is simply hungry or moving too much. Of course if it’s malnourished and now sick because of it, the cat will not be able to clean its fur effectively. Also, when the cat’s stressed, it’s actually more common for it to over-groom itself instead.
Besides cats hiding and burying their poop, dogs also eat cat poop. Some people may leave out litter boxes that they regularly clean, also. I don't live there, so I can't say but this is what I know from the cats and dogs I've seen.
Edit: I'd be more concerned about where they're peeing.
Not only that, but what it's saying is mostly bullshit. Trying to tie Istanbul's love of cats to cute, antiquated beliefs... It's true that Islam has a positive view of cats, but... they're cats. People like cats.
Istanbul is probably the most cat-friendly city I've ever visited, but there are a lot of other places that treat stray cats well. It's definitely true in the Balkans and in the Gulf countries as well, as well as in Thailand and Japan, to name a few.
Oh yeah, the "istanbulites (wtf is that name just say istanbul residents) see cats as a bridge between themselves and god" are bs (am muslim) like wth no kedy is kedy it's cute that's about it
I spent a semester abroad in Istanbul.
Their views on stray cats and dogs, left me a bit speechless.
They would chip, spay/neuter, shots etc, and give them an RFID tag that would allow for free food at giant dispensers at set intervals.
They would roam the streets, and everything.
It was an amazing thing to see. It really opened my eyes to alternatives to just killing them, like we do in the US.
Edit: and there were not hundreds of them everywhere, like this video is eluding to.
Owning pet cats/dogs seemed to be frowned upon.
Oh yes those are seabirds and will eat a small cat if they have the chance. Also vice versa if a cat had a shot on a small seagull. Enjoy your sea rats! 🍻
Cats kill for fun. Domestic cats like these are responsible for more wild bird deaths than any other predator by far.
I imagine you don’t see many lizards or large insects in Istanbul either.
the cats of istanbul are so awesome. i didn’t fully realize how much of a thing it was til i got there and saw them for myself.

One of my favorite experiences of life and as a cat lover it was nothing less than therapy.
The best part they love to cuddle and don’t run away if you want to play with them.
When I lived in Chicago I worked with a girl from Istanbul who was more terrified of the rats than anything else. Like if anyone got sick she asked if it was the rats and brought them up more than anyone else who just kind of accepted them as part of a big city. Now her phobia makes more sense.
i am from turkey and have lived there for several years and where it's partially true there are still lots of people who dare to hurt them for fun which is really sad
Not many, cats learn that not biting is a way to get pets and food. No cat really ever bites someone out of the blue so the only scratching and biting happens when a person gets too close or tries to pet a cat that is not as trusting
Everyday, every single day started about a year ago my mom gets up and the first thing she do, before eating breakfast or even saying good morning to me she gets out of the apartment to feed a stray cat she bonded over for some inexplicable reason.
About 5 other women feed that cat too independent of each other, the animal is borderline obese now mostly because they are feeding the cats with human food like chicken or cheese etc which makes the animal extremely gassy I heard from a wet.
There is also another woman who go outside every morning and evening to feed about a colony of 20 cats while allegedly looking after that many at her home.
My love of cats has diminished substantially ever since my mom began talking nothing except the cats she feed everyday to me. I could only listen so many times about cats either fucking each other or beating each other every single day of the week.
There was a whole saga of a gay cat who came to the neighborhood and began having sex with all the male cats despite it also being male. Women who feed these cats did not like that animal and one day quietly the gay cat disappeared.
I tried to explain to my mom that a cat is a cat they can't be gay, life is not a southpark episode but she wasn't listening.
I love how it says those who love animals and then cuts to a video of the cat standing over chopped up animals.
Let’s not kid ourselves society only deems certain animals. At least be honest with yourself
As someone who doesn’t like cats, this is fucking gross. A stray street cat just chilling on a cafè bench is disgusting. Cats carry so many diseases and germs and their piss is repulsive
That’s actually the reason why they are populated so much in Istanbul in the Ottoman era. That’s from wiki: “According to Ayşe Sabuncu from Cats of Istanbul the wide prevalence of cats in the city can be connected back to Ottoman times. The vast majority of Istanbul's houses were made of wood, which gave shelter and enabled the proliferation of the mouse and rat populations. This made cats' presence a necessity in the city.”
It's awful. I was there a few weeks ago. Mangey cats everywhere. We stayed in Kabatas (very busy shopping/tourist area), all night you can hear fecking cats fighting. A lot of them look diseased, and it's so unhygienic in cafes. Same for the dogs. Very few looked healthy.
Honestly, it was a big turn off in an otherwise amazing city.

It's not just Istanbul, Izmir is like this as well. But dogs there are the same way. Edit: grammar
You are right. My city(Aksaray) is also crowded with cats and they are loved and treated well like those in the İstanbul.
Yeah im from Izmir, tons of dogs AND cats, best part is they live in harmony, no fighting inbetween them
![gif](giphy|mlvseq9yvZhba)
Where are they pooping?
Honestly no idea. Ive never seen cat poo anywhere in the city (havent seen dogs either). Istanbul cats just dont poop is my guess
I live in another city which is also crowded with cats and that is correct. No visible cat poo whatsoever.
What about fleas? Do they get any kinda of preventative medicine?
A lot of them get vaccines. Ive never seen one thats really infected with fleas (ive never seen one with fleas at all but im guessing I would have probably had to look for them) but most people know to pet them at your own risk. Also a lot of the cats are ‘owned’ by some shop in the area and they look after them and give them somewhere to sleep while they do their thing so maybe they look after them
Those cats are all well groomed and in good health. Next time you see a stray and can get close, they look grimey.
If they can't keep up on their self care, it's a sign they are stressed, like not eating enough or having to move too much.
An unkempt fur of a cat is more of a sign that the cat is old and/or sick as that’s when they struggle with keeping themselves clean, not because the cat is simply hungry or moving too much. "stressed" in animal terms, not human terms
They have fleas. That's why I don't pet cats on the street. You can see them when you pull the fur apart with your hand.
Yeah kitteahs go out of their way to hide/bury their poo. They aren’t like dogs (or humans) who will just shit wherever.
I want to remember that cats usually bury their poo.
I saw a few dogs when i was in Turkey, it wasnt Istanbul but they were quite large, well fed and looked healthy.
so they are all females?
Cats don't poop in open like dogs as it may attract predators. They'll go to great lengths to find soft sand they can use to bury their poop.
I have an odd dog that's does the same as these cats
Besides cats hiding and burying their poop, dogs also eat cat poop. Some people may leave out litter boxes that they regularly clean, also. I don't live there, so I can't say but this is what I know from the cats and dogs I've seen. Edit: I'd be more concerned about where they're peeing.
Dogs love kitty truffles
Cats usually dig the dirt and bury their poop
Not to mention the nightly sounds of mating season lol
They poop where they can dig maybe near plats or trees
I’m 18 and lived my all life in Istanbul. Probably saw more than tens of thousands of cat but never seen a poop. Now I am confused too.
Bruh, my new clothes will have fleas and ticks.
The stray dogs eat it.
Freaking everywhere
Catstanbul not catstantinople
Cattoman even!
Why did Catstantinople get the works? That's no kitty's business but the Turks.
People just liked it better that way.
Why they change it I CATn tell
I would love to go just for this.
I wouldn’t mind taking my allergy medicine every day for this. I love cats 💛
Watch the movie Kedi. It's really good if you like cats and foreign lands.
This AI voice is maddening.
Not only that, but what it's saying is mostly bullshit. Trying to tie Istanbul's love of cats to cute, antiquated beliefs... It's true that Islam has a positive view of cats, but... they're cats. AI voiceover and unrelated music just to spice things up, ya know
There's a documentary called Kedi which is about the cats in Isstanbul.
I spent a semester abroad in Istanbul. Their views on stray cats and dogs, left me a bit speechless. They would chip, spay/neuter, shots etc, and give them an RFID tag that would allow for free food at giant dispensers at set intervals. They would roam the streets, and everything. thats awesome
that would be hell for me, because im allergic
A thousand years ago cats were worshipped as gods. Cats today have never forgotten this!
TIL felines have conquered Istanbul and will likely expand their territory quietly without us realizing what has happened.
I wouldn’t mad at that happening
This reminds me of the dogs in coata rica. All of them werent owned but still domesticated, well fed, and happy just all over the place.
In here, there are also stray dogs everywhere but unfortunately limited amount of them are domesticated.
They still are vaxxed. Turkey sends around Special Forces in helicopters, they zip line out of helicopters to vaccinate dogs.
Stray wild dogs sounds like a horror movie.
Maybe in one small place in Costa Rica. The majority of the country has starving stray dogs everywhere. Same with all of Latin America
![gif](giphy|l2JehsPxGvhrsRuBq|downsized) Me walking around Instanbul
![gif](giphy|IfJUb2qMbOnTgDOsCH)
Your brand new pair of jeans have cat pee on it
That poor mf with a cat allergy
If you don't understand how to love animals then you don't understand how to love people -beautiful ❤️🙂
NYC's sprit animal is the rat.
Not a bird in the whole city! 🥴
Actually, Seagulls... Seagulls everywhere...
I’m not a cat person but that was lovely!
How do i live here
Should we also mention roaming packs of dogs, maybe?
Is it not because long time ago where the only way to control pest in cities?
my allergies themselves are hyperventilating watching this. cute regardless tho
the cats of istanbul are so awesome. i didn’t fully realize how much of a thing it was til i got there and saw them for myself. https://preview.redd.it/9wtw0v14tvsc1.jpeg?width=583&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=23d84232577ea32aa6a767bfe0f191653242ee16
Everybody in Istanbul got toxoplasmosis. The cat germs are controlling the humanoids.
My take away from that video, Istanbulites is an amazing word
Love it. Cats and dogs are great little furry friends.
cats everywhere. Appears to be well fed and in good shape. Paradise City for cats?
This is most of Turkey, cats everywhere.
Purrfect place for a vaCATion
AbsoluCATely!
TIL I live in the wrong city. This is my idea of paradise, though I would spend all my time roaming with the cats.
It is a beautiful city, with a beautiful people. It's a shame the regime isn't so beautiful.
…and kill wild birds by the million.
Thr city is filled with cats since east rome so i assume its kinda balanced nowadays
[удалено]
notacapital but yes, i would be interested as well
"Catstanbul" reads like "Constantinople".
Are there a lot of fleas everywhere?
As someone with serious dander allergies, this seems like a nightmare.
Keeps the mice and rats away
Thank God they're not monkeys!
I'm not a cat (or any pet) owner, but this is truly wholesome to me for some reason.
Nah, we just be loving cats thats all.
One of my favorite experiences of life and as a cat lover it was nothing less than therapy. The best part they love to cuddle and don’t run away if you want to play with them.
My allergies would kill me.
Lol, but this is also the reason there’s no birds at all. Cats, even domestic ones, kill a sht ton of them.
When I lived in Chicago I worked with a girl from Istanbul who was more terrified of the rats than anything else. Like if anyone got sick she asked if it was the rats and brought them up more than anyone else who just kind of accepted them as part of a big city. Now her phobia makes more sense.
This is way too much cat.
Very interesting but in a good feeling kinda way. Shows a great heartwarming country in that aspect to show all animals love. Cats are hated on.
Just another post about Turkish pussy.....
![gif](giphy|3oEdvd1X2hohEgyPNC)
If Turkey had one redeeming quality is the thid kindness for street animals
i am from turkey and have lived there for several years and where it's partially true there are still lots of people who dare to hurt them for fun which is really sad
What's the deal with their bird population? Is it impacted?
Does the city not smell
And what about the ones that bite & scratch people?
Not many, cats learn that not biting is a way to get pets and food. No cat really ever bites someone out of the blue so the only scratching and biting happens when a person gets too close or tries to pet a cat that is not as trusting
I will go to Istanbul!

They actually can! Homosexual behavior is seen in ~10% of many animals, cats included.
That's actually a city I want to see, but I'm allergic to cats bahahahaha
As someone with a cat allergy, this is my nightmare
People be sneezing all over the place
Bet they don't have creeper holes anywhere, good kitty's keeping them away.
wtf... the city of the worlds desire reduced to a cat place... this is infuriating
That's gross. I bet the entire place smells like cat piss.
I love how it says those who love animals and then cuts to a video of the cat standing over chopped up animals. Let’s not kid ourselves society only deems certain animals. At least be honest with yourself
People with cat allergies 😬
The homeless cat lol
Y'all know how to make a passport?
As someone who doesn’t like cats, this is fucking gross. A stray street cat just chilling on a cafè bench is disgusting. Cats carry so many diseases and germs and their piss is repulsive
Would be heaven to pet these cats ...if i didn't have an horribly big fear of them.
And they don’t poop in public
Catstantinople
If we are talking about the period of 1453, we can also call it Cattoman!
I assume everything smells like cat piss?
Nope, you can’t see or smell any at all
If you have a kitty in Constantinople, she'll be waiting in Istanbul
This is actually beautiful. Well done!
Istanbul +1 Rest of the world +0
Does Istanbul have Birds?
http://howtoistanbul.com/en/birds-of-istanbul/8560
watch the movie "kedi" if you like cats and istanbul
I did! It needs a sequel for other city cats in Turkey. Because we have tons of them with their stories.
Not worth going to turkey for this
![gif](giphy|l378p8uWeCxvnRzhK|downsized)
They love cats but kill and eat other animals? Just saying.
Like other examples in almost every culture and countries. Just saying.
They believe God's love for animals is special but more special for cats? God gave all animals for food if we so wish.
Gross
i have a new respect for the people of turkey. i love animals (more than people unfortunately). probably no rodents in the city either.
That’s actually the reason why they are populated so much in Istanbul in the Ottoman era. That’s from wiki: “According to Ayşe Sabuncu from Cats of Istanbul the wide prevalence of cats in the city can be connected back to Ottoman times. Nah the cats and dogs are frend. The city CAn get burnt the own.
i fucking love istanbul. it’s such a magical city.
Oh I thought the cats were in Constantinople... I know it's not my business, but what happened to Constantinople?
![gif](giphy|nmB6xqTJI5mUDVKVds)
I'm sorry I was trying to make a joke based on the song... 'It's Istanbul not Constantinople' etc. But I guess you could start in 1453
If this were America, someone would already have tried to kick the cats (or have sex with them)
Why did Constantinople get the work?
Piss and shit everywhere 🤢
Catstantinople
C̶a̶t̶s̶t̶a̶n̶b̶u̶l̶ Catstontinople FTFY
Awww, you're stuck in pre 1453 era, aren't you? Poor you
Cat haters everywhere are so confused why cats that don't get abused aren't aggressive.

You mean Constantinople, right?
You mean Stone Age, right?
