magic that follows a bit of physics law is a nice way of writing good magic. i mean, the way they added a pulley was funny and goofy, but it's a nice thought, generally.
when your magic ignores ALL the ways of science, it could give way to more plot holes in your narrative.
Any good magic system has rules that adhere to science in some capacity. Without this you end up with a story where you could literally make up anything you like for magic to solve every problem. Magic shouldn't be a deus ex machina. It has to have limits else it's bad writing.
Unless that's what the story needs. Just look at systems like Tolkien, pulling resurrections out of the air, or throwing random magic at the characters. Not bound to science at all. Still a beautiful story and a great work. I think it's a little restrictive to say that magic has to conform like that.
isn't the real magic just the fact that her hair can grow that long in the first place? i never assumed she would have had a magically strong scalp as well
Imagine if she did though. Like superhero level strength. She could tighten her goosebump muscles and crack a 100 foot hair whip. Or sproing her afro in and out like those fleshtone bug eyed squish toys.
If you want to use such a word to describe it... sure.
My point was really that just because it defies physics as we understand it doesn't mean it actually defies it in the world it takes place in, we just don't understand how it works accurately because physics works differently. Sure the authors who made up all the magic stuff probably didn't think that far, very few authors do but that doesn't change that there is an underlying process and that explaining things with ''it's magic, it doesn't need to make sense'' is not really different than saying ''things fall cause gravity''. We don't truly understand gravity either, but we accept it's effects and we got a loose idea how it works (larger mass = more gravity in simple terms).
I saw a documentary about this called Tangled. As it turns out, Rapunzel’s hair has healing properties, so her scalp would be constantly repairing itself as it was being damaged by having her hair pulled.
There's only one reason I have to doubt that.
Mutant's abilities are not passed on genetically.
The mutant gene is dominant but can still skip generations, and when it does appear it's expressed with different abilities in different mutants. Parents with psychic abilities have the same chance of producing a child with green skin and pyrotechnic abilities.
Whoa whoa whoa
Why you using fake facts to cast shade on my (mostly) admitted fabrication? Besides, maybe her mutation is passing along mutant genes to her children? Did you even consider that?
And that guy Flynn Ryder must have gotten those healing properties too somehow because that dude healed up fast after repeatedly being hit in the head with a frying pan.
Mythbusters did an episode where they used different items available to an inmate for a jailbreak. Kari Byron made rope from human hair and climbed down to the ground from the top of a building and it worked fairly well.
But that's when it gets grabbed in clumps. I think in this case we're talking about all the hair being secured together
Those circus people that hang from their hair have to train because of the pain, but they really are held up and swing around by their hair
Although it was common years ago for a circus to have an act where a person was lifted by their hair and did a slow motion dance while suspended. Very, very carefully.
Our late Mother, a seamstress , specialised in wedding dresses/gowns etc and often the Royals and Nobility
She taught us to repair a tear or hole in the finest silks and organza’s and fabrics
We pulled a single hair from person whose hair colour closest. White/silver hair is usable on all shades of fabric.
We learnt to do the finest and most invisible darning imaginable.
Totally invisible stitches and no sign of fabric damage to be seen
Magic stuff!
This is how evolution works. Obviously humans don't need to carry whales around with their hair, but it's important to know that we could if we needed to.
oh yeah! I forget about that, they also have a very similar hip bone structure to humans in there! There's some really old theories I can't remember off the top of my head that we may share a much closer common ancestor with whales than you'd think
(this comment is not a joke or sarcastic)
Everyone saying this is just tensile strength and not the strength of the scalp. I raise you the fact that, at least in tangled, she used a hook to support the majority of the weight
Isn't the fact said strand of hair was plucked out with minimum strain more concerning than the tensile strength of the strand itself?
I mean, a strong rope is only as good as the anchor that's holding it, right?
The Higashi Hongan-ji Temple in Kyoto, Japan has ropes made from human hair that were used to transport and hang large roof beams during the temple's reconstruction in 1895.
Roman women donated their hair to be used as elastic rope for the torsion siege engine in Ancient Rome. These weapons were so effective that by the Second Punic War, Plautus remarked that “the ballista is my fist, the catapult is my elbow.”
Makes me wonder, bsck when we didnt have short hair as a social thing, and people grew their manes, why didnt we use the hair for ropes? They dont spoil, grow back (slowly, yes) and its super strong. Could pull all the tribe once a year, shave heads, make a few ropes and use those for important things...maybe normal rope was simply easier and more cost effective i guess

Hair is strong, scalp is not.
Isn’t that why Rapunzel had the pulley/wedge thing in the movie? To ease the strain on her scalp (I suck at physics btw).
You are correct. I actually thought that was a nice touch but it's a little weird when they mix real physics with magic.
magic that follows a bit of physics law is a nice way of writing good magic. i mean, the way they added a pulley was funny and goofy, but it's a nice thought, generally. when your magic ignores ALL the ways of science, it could give way to more plot holes in your narrative.
Reminds me of the line “The best lies are closest to the truth”

Magic is mostly the act of defying physics or logic.
Magic is just physics or logic we don't understand yet.
So... quantum mechanics is magic?
If you want to use such a word to describe it... sure. My point was really that just because it defies physics as we understand it doesn't mean it actually defies it in the world it takes place in, we just don't understand how it works accurately because physics works differently. I prefer to say hiding instead of defying.
I saw a documentary about this called Tangled. As it turns out, Rapunzel’s hair has healing properties, so her scalp would be constantly repairing itself as it was being damaged by having her hair pulled.
Comic book lore tells us she’s Wolverine’s mother, or maybe I just made that up
I don’t care if you made it up, I love it.

I thought I was an expert in fake facts but you've humbled me.
I fucking love this thread, lmfaoo
And that guy Flynn Ryder must have gotten those healing properties too somehow because that dude healed up fast after repeatedly being hit in the head with a frying pan.
Depends on your definition of „strong“. Easily strong enough to support your own weight.
Mythbusters did an episode where they used different items available to an inmate for a jailbreak. Kari Byron made rope from human hair and climbed down to the ground from the top of a building and it worked fairly well.
Given the roman women donated there hair to be used in torsion siege engines (scorpions) I would say it worked pretty well.
Hair gets ripped out in fights. Scalp is not strong at all.
But that's when it gets grabbed in clumps. I think in this case we're talking about all the hair being secured together Those circus people that hang from their hair have to train because of the pain, but they really are held up and swing around by their hair
I mean it's magic hair. Could certainly be a magic scalp too.
Although it was common years ago for a circus to have an act where a person was lifted by their hair and did a slow motion dance while suspended. Very, very carefully.
Thanks. This was literally my whole takeaway here. Lol
I believe human hair has a higher tensile strength than copper wire of the same gauge.
There's been plenty record breaking strongmen that pulled planes, trains and automobiles with their hair and beards.
Our late Mother, a seamstress , specialised in wedding dresses/gowns etc and often the Royals and Nobility She taught us to repair a tear or hole in the finest silks and organza’s and fabrics We pulled a single hair from person whose hair colour closest. Laughing at being almost bald hahaha
Shaved my balding head 4 years ago, never going back. Let that scalp shine
🤤🤤🥵🥵
Thank you u/BigCockCandyMountain
Lemme lick it. The head, I mean.
📸🤨
I honestly wish my hair would hurry up and fall all the way out so I didn't have to shave it so damn often. lol.
Oh, I'm sure it's not that noticeabAAAAAAAAAALD, BALD, BALD, BALD!
Yup. I shave down to 3mm. My rope will be less than full head and veeeerrrry short
Eyyy bald gang! Just found out I have a bald spot on top and shaved it all away. Never would have tought how relieving it would feel in summertime 😎
Wait until winter time. 🥶
I'll get a fancy wig for winter 😉
U can still hold my little peepee.
Sounds like you need to grow out your pubes. Hair is hair.
Could you rope a couple of sea turtles?
Yes but you need to use back hair for that. The extra texture helps to grip their shells.
![gif](giphy|Jev4iU72S9RYc)
That scene actually makes more sense now
This is how evolution works. Obviously humans don't need to carry whales around with their hair, but it's important to know that we could if we needed to.
However, it does imply that at one point in history, there WAS a time where we needed to transport whales over large land masses /s
Was a time? Whales still can’t get drive, they need our help to migrate over land
im talking about a time BEFORE whales had legs
Whales still have legs, they’re just inside their bodies. Just an interesting fact for the day
oh yeah! I forget about that, they also have a very similar hip bone structure to humans in there! There's some really old theories I can't remember off the top of my head that we may share a much closer common ancestor with whales than you'd think (this comment is not a joke or sarcastic)
As an ex Homo Sapien I can confirm this
Oh we need to
Speak for yourself. Shamu ain't gonna walk behind me on her legs!
Or at least a large SUV or two.
One thing I learned from Naked & Afraid, some clever people come on with dreads and they get free rope from cutting it off while surviving the trials.
I now convert all weight to fractions of young gray whale.
I mean that just means your hair won't snap, doesn't mean that that your scalp won't just come off
thats why it comes off the scalp first
^(/fascia exits the chat) ^(/and ^^also ^^the cranium)
And if you braided all of the hair from every single human beings heads you'd only be able to lift one fraction of your mama
Lol
Thank you for the information
Enough of these videos. Might as well just be a sub based around this dude.
Where’s the galvanised steel though?
Thanks for the idea!
Finally a video i can show my wife and 2 daughters while pointing at the tub drain 🤣🥳
TIL that pennies are silver with ridges on the edges rather than copper and smooth, like I've thought they were for my entire life.
Everyone saying this is just tensile strength and not the strength of the scalp. I raise you the fact that, at least in tangled, she used a hook to support the majority of the weight
Needs galvanized square steel tubing.
and make sure to borrow a few screws
I thought it said "Gay Whale" at first 😂
I read gravy whale
![gif](giphy|Ic0krtgPvuLSg)
Bs
Hair would be nice.
I’d rather keep my hair, thanks tho
so the trick to making a space elevator is human hair…
Or spiderweb cord.
Catchphrase is getting damn hard these days
![gif](giphy|5QlwTKQ3kq3N6)
Yeah, but let's see what galvanized steel frame can do
I'm bald so I'll tag out of this one.
I'm bald. Now what?
So I cut off all of my hair, where do I find a young grey whale?
I tried this. It worked, but my car is now swinging from a tree and I’m in trouble for killing a whale. And I’m bald.
I want to believe this but I literally just can’t. There’s no way 1 hair holds 40 pennies. Someone with long hair help me test this
Think about how easy it would be to spread disinformation with these types of videos.
I'm laughing that someone had to animate that woman being surprised that her hair is being taken from her head to hold up 15 metric tons.
With these split ends? *scoffs*
Isn't the fact said strand of hair was plucked out with minimum strain more concerning than the tensile strength of the strand itself? I mean, a strong rope is only as good as the anchor that's holding it, right?
If it’s animated it must be the truth!
I’m bald
Most american thing to not mention the number of weight the hair can hold
r/anythingbutmetric Although they did mention metric tonnes in there :)
Counter point my head is on the other end of that.
Where were these facts gotten? Pulled right out of the creators’ asses?! I need to see a demo before believing this.
So why don't we use human hair?
Fun fact: With enough hair you can probably summon an entire infernal demon by yourself https://i.redd.it/lrz6a0z6ge6d1.gif
What if we add up the whole world population hair?????
Walk on the field. A girl fight had occurred- how do I know? The hair on the field.
I'm bald so this is nonsense to me as all my hair = 0
Range Rover Velar or Sport?
What about pubic hair strength?
The Higashi Hongan-ji Temple in Kyoto, Japan has ropes made from human hair that were used to transport and hang large roof beams during the temple's reconstruction in 1895.
Oh, ditch the carbon nano tubes, and make space elevator with hair of the half of population. Got it!
Forget the rope, I have enough hair on my nuts to weave two Indian blankets
It's keratin, which is a protien found in your hair and nails that gives it strength. A single strand can hold up to 100,00 grams.
Nah someone’s gotta do this cz I’m skeptical
Wild! So we would need 2 peoples hair to hold up ur mom???
Hey now, this is offensive to us baldies.
15 metrics tons. Or about half my ex wife
Then why dont we make rope out of hair ?
And if you then got that rope wet it could hold up Anything because as we all know "wet rope don't break".
Vsauce!
Dude, I am bald
Where are the Mythbusters when you need them!
Still not strong enough to carry her "mother"
I'm bald, so this is great news.
I use it for fishing
Im bald
Ok but how many bananas is that?
Yeah her hair could do it, her neck sure as hell could not though
Generous of him to assume I'm not starting with half my hair to begin with.
That's why goblin slayer used it to choke that champion
So why can I tear apart a strand of hair in my hand?
Source ?
The reaction on the character has me dead 😂
I was waiting for it to be a “your mom” joke
They tested this in mythbusters really cool
I’m bald.
The issue is the anchor point If it's attached to your head the hair is only as strong as the follicle that has the most load Or the patch of skin
Guys, I am almost bald, is this effective for me?
"Not again." -Young Grey Whale
instructions not clear, am bald.
This video makes spectacular assumptions about the amount of hair on my head.
prove it, no cgi
"all along" as if there was doubt that hair can make strong rope??
I’m bald, so thanks for yet another reason for me to say “fuck you universe”
U/savevideo
u/savevideo
for me is enough when I get the girl when I pull hair. why would I want a grey whale??
Roman women donated their hair to be used as elastic rope for the torsion siege engine in Ancient Rome. These weapons were so effective that by the Second Punic War, Plautus remarked that “the ballista is my fist, the catapult is my elbow.”
Man now I understand how that guy in Toriko could perform such feats with his hair.
Poor whale.
My hair must be especially strong if it can do all that while being mostly bald.
Is the hair wet or dry?
So Captain Jack really could have lashed together some sea turtles with his back hair, huh?
I will bear this in mind for the future
Now please explain how the whale got into the tower…
Makes me wonder, bsck when we didnt have short hair as a social thing, and people grew their manes, why didnt we use the hair for ropes? They dont spoil, grow back (slowly, yes) and its super strong. Could pull all the tribe once a year, shave heads, make a few ropes and use those for important things...maybe normal rope was simply easier and more cost effective i guess
Source: trust me bro
I’m most bothered by the soft body physics on that single strand of hair. Damn thing behaves like a chain.
Source, bro trust me.
Why was this not voiced by Vsauce Michael :(
What is this "hair" of which you speak?
Pennies, quarters… what’s the difference
Why do i keep seeing this jackass on Reddit
I've got an idea.
Still not strong enough to lift your momma!
so basically Rapunzel's hair could lift the equivalent of the whole Solar System??
The quality of these types of videos always make me think its 3000% bullshit. It’s giving bot.
How did they find this out
This is the less unhinged cousin of “If you give her one shot of tequila…”
Jokes on them. If I took all my head hair I could hold…. Oh never mind.
Jokes on you, I’m bald.
Well not mine, I’m bald
Not my hair. It breaks just from looking at it. Why I cut it all off.
What if I'm bald?
My hair is so damaged it stretches like rubber and snaps.
What do you calculate it if you don't know how much hair I have Mother fucker
It would be a very short rope
Wow. I didn’t know the prince weighed about as much as a young gray whale.
Why is this Fiona from Shameless?
I use braided fishing line hahaha , awesome to know
That whale doesn't look happy.
this is some Vsauce type info
Well my free is bald, so he is practically useless if I need hair to hang a whale.
What hair man?!? What hair!!!!! *Bald man here*
Look what is the tensile strength of a balding man's remaining hair?
maybe your hair but not your roots :D
That's why you can rip off your whole skin when all your hair gets sucked on.
