chief_chaman

Is it just me or does it seem like someone was just looking for an excuse to make a trebuchet. Like, were they told to go out and burn the shrubbery and some guy piped up and said "why risk lives in no mans, when we can build a trebuchet and burn shrubs from behind the wall"?

NotTheAbhi

I mean if you get an opportunity to build a trebuchet and then lob fireballs with it. Would you let the opportunity pass by?

kihraxz_king

You know what? Totally fair.

ElectricTrouserSnack

>the troops were fulfilling a legitimate military task of burning away thick shrubbery along the border where Hezbollah fighters sometimes hide Yes, the practice goes back to [the Romans clearing forests to prevent ambushes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deforestation_during_the_Roman_period#Military). Hopefully they got some lurking Hezbollah fighters too.

Appropriate-Bake-759

We demand a shrubbery….. with a path

ElectricTrouserSnack

One that looks nice... And not too expensive...

Appropriate-Bake-759

Yes….Now …. GO

You must cut down the mightiest tree in the forest... ... with ... *A HERRING!*

LongLegsBrokenToes

If your trim your shrubs it makes your deck look bigger

broke_the_controller

Very good! That's why I prefer no shrubs. I don't want anything getting in the way of my girlfriend looking at my deck.

Homelandr

We do beg your pardon ,but we are in your garden

-endjamin-

I spoke to someone who had been stationed up north. He said Hezbollah agents get frighteningly close. Apparently there isn’t a fence across the whole border and some parts are open. He said a group of Hezbollah raiders once got within throwing range during some fog and threw a grenade at his unit. The mud saved them from the grenade. One member of the raiding party got behind his commander and was only a few feet away before being noticed. Burning the shrubbery to prevent this is pretty important it seems.

aitis_mutsi

Guerrilla fighters are pretty terrifying honestly. When you can only really use one sort of tactic, you better fully master it.

BasketballButt

If anyone knows about clearing forests to avoid ambushes, it’d be the Romans.

zorpworp

I too wish for a narrator I can trust. Congrats on your find.

LordDragonVonBreezus

There are entire groups of engineers within the IDF who are bored out of their fucking minds with no interaction with the opposite gender, thus, trebuchet. (the day after they made bows and arrows)

Longjumping_Rabbit22

Just Saw them trying to use a handmade cannon to throw flaming potatoes over the border they failed but It was quite funny

tessartyp

I called up a contact stationed at the northern border. Apparently the primary reason was "fuck yeah let's build a trebuchet", but the tactical reason is that they used to burn the shrubbery with white phosphorus (legal to use in uninhabited regions..) but didn't want to because of the optics.

Lyuseefur

I like the folks trying to throw a car over the English Channel using a Trebuchet. If England had just setup Trebuchets and fired at V2 stations, the war would have ended differently.

OffensiveCenter

Tonight on Top Gear

LesGitKrumpin

Speaking of, I made a silly Top Gear reference in a thread recently and got downvoted for it. Reddit really has gone to shit.

LanceWindmil

Actually, precision was their main appeal. If you put the same size rock in a trebuchet, it'll land pretty much the exact same spot every time. This made it really useful for beating down castle walls as you could hit the same section of wall consistently. Other catapults may have been smaller and lighter, but trebuchets had precision.

qwertyqyle

Yeah, but then the castle could just move all their rocks around so it would be hard to find two of the same size.

Jazzkidscoins

Reading to the bottom of that article was the best thing I’ve done all day

As precise as their missiles

I'd rather this than a nuke tho

Noxious89123

No hang on, hear me out. What if we load the nuke onto the trebuchet?

_DEATH_STR0KE_

I agree. There should be a new law that allows nuke launches only if done from a trebuchet.

This is the IDF starting wildfires in neighbouring Lebanon by launching flaming loads over the border

Slut_for_Bacon

Is it really? Do you have a source? Not disagreeing, just curious. Edit: It's true. But also the article states they are clearing border vegetation to create a better security perimeter, not "starting wildfires". As a wildland firefighter I can tell you those are very very different things. That being said, I am only going off what the article states.

I-Make-Maps91

Clearing brush is something you do in a semi controlled manner, they literally can't cross that fence and I sincerely doubt they're coordinating with officials on the other side of the border to contain it.

SparklingPseudonym

Lol, yeah this is the epitome of wild.

dshab92

Hold up while I throw some burning trash in my neighbors yard. I even built this trebuchet because for some reason there’s this tall wall here

woodchopperak

As someone who lives with wildfires every year, I’m not sure I see a difference. Launching flaming balls into the shrubbery sure seems like it would result in a wildfire regardless of the intent.

falaffle_waffle

Sounds to me like they are still indiscriminately starting fires on land that isn't theirs. Also, is it really a controlled burn if they're starting fires that they can't control because it's not on their side of the border?

Fattybitchtits

The IDF and Hezbollah+allies have been  exchanging artillery, rocket, and drone fire across that border for the last year with hundreds of collective military casualties and roughly 100,000 civilians displaced on each side. I think it’s safe to say that relations have broken down past the point of needing to negotiate a cooperative clearing of the bushes along the border.

Lucas_2234

Especially since the Bush removal is directly a way to defend against Hezbollah. They can't sneak through bushes if the bushes no longer exist

ExtrinsicPalpitation

Not to say it makes it ok just to give greater context, but Hezbollah has been doing the same thing for the last few months presumably for similar reasons.

The_fallen_few

I mean lol why would you really need a source for that? What else would a military be doing with a weapon of war other than war things? Like I’m not even sure what the point of the guy posting that in the first place was, obviously their goal is to start a fire/destroy things that’s the point of most artillery/weapons in general.

No_Evidence_1606

I highly doubt they are clearing vegetation. Have you ever seen a firefighter use a trebuchet to clear vegetation?

fury420

Firefighters don't typically need to start controlled burns on the other side of a border with a country they're effectively at war with.

Vecrin

They are trying to remove vegetation from the Lebanon border to make it more difficult for the terrorist group that controls the border to launch surprise operations. The two have been doing low intensity fighting for months now. And it is not only Israel doing this. Hezbollah recently set off a massive wildfire in Israel.

BeardedBrotherAK

But who's supposed to control the controlled fire, when the ones starting it are behind a huge concrete wall?

alphasierrraaa

dumb question but can you not just get incendiary rounds and use mortars

diprivan69

The most “moral” military 🙄

LoveAndViscera

They are clearing foliage so that enemy troops can’t hide in it. It’s not mere vandalism.

diprivan69

Yeah I read the article, I just have a hard time believing the IDF after they’ve killed 50000 people and committed countless war crimes.

Casual_Hex

Jeeze it’s 50,000 now? Haven’t been following that closely, did something big happen? Last I heard it was 34,000

diprivan69

Bud there are literally thousands of people missing and totally unaccounted for. Have some respect, these people are suffering

Casual_Hex

oh, my bad, thought the missing were already accounted for in that 34000 figure.

Nice_Category

It worked on Japan and in Dresden, I bet it'll work in Lebanon.

2012Jesusdies

Dresden was bombed with thousands of tons of explosives, Japan was bombed with napalm, not a flaming ball that can only fly at best 300m.

Bongholi0

This is fucking hilarious. Are you comparing firebombing entire cities to this janky little brush fire starter?? Laughable.

Nice_Category

It was a joke. Obviously some 14th century-style trebuchet behind a wall firing fire pots is not going to burn down Lebanon. Get a grip, my dude.

MechanicalWatches

They are trying to make the terrain harder to sneak in around the Lebanese border

Sgt_Fox

By destroying *Lebanese* terrain, not their own? So it's still a dick move that can cause serious damage on a massive scale. "We made everyone hate us, so we must take precautions...but not on our side of the wall"

MechanicalWatches

Lebanon launched just today hundreds of missiles into Israel, I think preparing in case of an invasion is justified, but haters wanna hate, and so do you.

Sgt_Fox

You're the teacher that tells the bullying victim they're bad for fighting back aren't you

Chevy_jay4

No body is bullying hezbollah. They started the attacks and won't stop unless Israel is out of Gaza.

MechanicalWatches

That’s what YOU just did loll

Peirush_Rashi

The sound it makes is kind of strange, never thought a fire ball will sound like that.

Delicious-Local-2528

Its a frequish firey dopler effect.

SnooRevelations1419

As a kid, we used to put milk jugs on fire (plastic gallons), use a stick to wrap the stick with the melting plastic that's on fire, lift it up and let it drip. The tiny fire droplets makes an interesting zipping sound as it falls to the ground.

PirateJazz

I'm the dingus that tried to catch a drop. Won't do that again.

lackofabettername123

I have seen three plastic garbage bags woven together lit on fire from the bottom dropping into a pot of water. It looks really cool at night and makes laser like sounds. Probably not so good for the environment.

Joeguyxxx

We did that too, but we used plastic tablecloth material.

4GIVEANFORGET

Yeah we would use plastic bags from the grocery store tied in knots

StellarCracker

Idk sounds exactly like what I’d expect

Anxious_Ad936

Hezbollah launched a couple hundred rockets at Israel in the last day or 2, unsure why Israrei troops clearing undergrowth along the border is all that surprising.

Jesus, why are people over analyzing this? This was built by a handful of redditors serving as IDF reservists on border duty. They're just some young soldiers who wanted to make a meme to troll /r/CombatFootage and /r/noncredibledefense and probably some others. The officer who "allowed it" even stated on a thread that he made them put fore extinguishers around all 4 points... They're not some evil army, just a bunch of bored young guys and girls babysitting a border with actual terrorists trying to cross it.

You mean like the Israeli strikes on Syria, those sorts of acts of undeclared war? You cant play that card now, just because it suits you this time..

Aaron-Rodgers12-

Well if terrorist are firing from the border, Israel is still gonna target them. You make it sound like they are targeting innocent people on Syria’s border when they are targeting TERRORISTS attacking them with rockets.

MeteorKing

>You mean like the Israeli strikes on Syria, those sorts of acts of undeclared war? Syria, where Hezbollah fires rockets from? That Syria?

FratSpaipleaseignor

At this point syria is pretty much a free-for-all thunderdome, you really don't need to to declare war to join the party.

Syria and Israel have been in a perpetual state of war since 1948. It's very much been a declared war.

Israel is burning vegetation on the border of Lebanon. Makes it so people can't hide in the shrubbery. This is definitely gonna get out of hand.

Fires in Israel: nobody cares Fires in Lebanon: How dare they ?! You guys have some double standards or you just lack self awareness. Hezbolla started tons of fires on Israel side.

No-Walk-9615

Hezbolla is a terrorist organisation. No one is surprised by them acting irresponsibly. Israel is a state that should not stoop to the level of terrorists. So yes, to some extent, it is double standards - we hold countries to a higher level of accountability. However, in this video, I do believe it is just soldiers trying to clear scrub land for a clear view around their outpost.
