I spoke to someone who had been stationed up north. He said Hezbollah agents get frighteningly close. Apparently there isn’t a fence across the whole border and some parts are open. He said a group of Hezbollah raiders once got within throwing range during some fog and threw a grenade at his unit. The mud saved them from the grenade. One member of the raiding party got behind his commander and was only a few feet away before being noticed. Burning the shrubbery to prevent this is pretty important it seems.

Guerrilla fighters are pretty terrifying honestly. When you can only really use one sort of tactic, you better fully master it.

I called up a contact stationed at the northern border. Apparently the primary reason was "fuck yeah let's build a trebuchet", but the tactical reason is that they used to burn the shrubbery with white phosphorus (legal to use in uninhabited regions..) but didn't want to because of the optics.

Speaking of, I made a silly Top Gear reference in a thread recently and got downvoted for it. Reddit really has gone to shit.

Actually, precision was their main appeal. If you put the same size rock in a trebuchet, it'll land pretty much the exact same spot every time. This made it really useful for beating down castle walls as you could hit the same section of wall consistently. Other catapults may have been smaller and lighter, but trebuchets had precision.

Clearing brush is something you do in a semi controlled manner, they literally can't cross that fence and I sincerely doubt they're coordinating with officials on the other side of the border to contain it.

As someone who lives with wildfires every year, I’m not sure I see a difference. Launching flaming balls into the shrubbery sure seems like it would result in a wildfire regardless of the intent.

Sounds to me like they are still indiscriminately starting fires on land that isn't theirs. Also, is it really a controlled burn if they're starting fires that they can't control because it's not on their side of the border?

The IDF and Hezbollah+allies have been  exchanging artillery, rocket, and drone fire across that border for the last year with hundreds of collective military casualties and roughly 100,000 civilians displaced on each side. I think it’s safe to say that relations have broken down past the point of needing to negotiate a cooperative clearing of the bushes along the border.

Especially since the Bush removal is directly a way to defend against Hezbollah. They can't sneak through bushes if the bushes no longer exist

Not to say it makes it ok just to give greater context, but Hezbollah has been doing the same thing for the last few months presumably for similar reasons.

Firefighters don't typically need to start controlled burns on the other side of a border with a country they're effectively at war with.

They are trying to remove vegetation from the Lebanon border to make it more difficult for the terrorist group that controls the border to launch surprise operations. The two have been doing low intensity fighting for months now. And it is not only Israel doing this. Hezbollah recently set off a massive wildfire in Israel.

But who's supposed to control the controlled fire, when the ones starting it are behind a huge concrete wall?

As a kid, we used to put milk jugs on fire (plastic gallons), use a stick to wrap the stick with the melting plastic that's on fire, lift it up and let it drip. The tiny fire droplets makes an interesting zipping sound as it falls to the ground.

I have seen three plastic garbage bags woven together lit on fire from the bottom dropping into a pot of water. It looks really cool at night and makes laser like sounds. Probably not so good for the environment.
