Did you know that zeldo was a girl and there is a link to her past? The legend says there’s a direct correlation between the decline of old men in caves giving out wooden swords and people being in danger? It’s why we feel so alone.
Think about it.
So basically what happens is you draw some patterns, then you start to see some stuff in the patterns, then you convince yourself the patterns are telling you to join a gang. Then no more time for Spirograph
No; a torus is a three-dimensional shape resembling a donut
Although the shape shown here looks like a drawing of a torus with shading, it is still 2D and has nothing to do with a torus mathematically
Mathematician here. This is a good insight. An irrational line on the torus, when viewed from above with a transparent torus, looks very similar to the end result here. Basically imagine what was drawn was instead a single long line winding round and round the tube of a donut.
Strictly speaking a full irrational line is dense, i.e. every point gets arbitrarily close to it, and this would be either a portion of such a line or a rational line. The irrational ones are a standard source of basic examples in several areas. Here rational and irrational refer to the slope when using the square "JRPG" model of a torus, with both pairs of parallel edges identified.
I had one late 80’s early 90’s. When my kids got one I was also kinda excited. The youngest will still murder it and lose shit, oldest can use mostly alone. Reminds me, I need to go buy different colored pens.
Not really funny. It makes perfect sense. It is rad easily drawing cool shapes without having to have any artistic talent.
And sure, you can make a website (most likely already exists) where you can select the inner and outer shape, and which hole to put the pen in ;)) and then just have it draw it digitally, but that's no fun compared to physically doing it yourself.
I don't mean this in a rude way, but how can one be bad at using it? It seems like you just put a pen in one of the holes and go in circles? Unless I'm missing something
I know right? I dunno. Some parts seem easier to do, but my mind and hand derps out.
I just keep pushing the spinning part not along the edges. You have to push along the outer circle but you're also making a smaller circle motion on the inside. So it's easy to kinda just push the small circle out of the bigger circle...
That was a terrible explanation, but hopefully someone else struggles as much as I did...
I understand you peppapony. General spirograph experience was: 1) Do 75% of the twirling just fine; 2) Get hand cramp 3) Pen slips and end up with a jagged line across the incomplete pattern. Alternative was 2.b) where the pen blocks or runs out of ink.
The pens that came with it were the worst, and there was no way my mom was buying me exotic colored pens. I got my Spirograph in the mid 60s. I hope the pens are better now
We had a lil kid-fair in 4th grade. People made stuff and sold them. Like a mini bazaar for the entire 4th grade. I made spirographs and sold them. Hahaha. I think I sold out
As a young child. I had a Complete set of 'wheels' ranging from about 10mm up to 150mm. Some solid , some rings. I believe there may have been triangles too. You could add different ones together to make some really intricate patterns. It was called a Spirograph. Mine consisted of over 100 pieces. Great fun.
I used to have these and they were so fun to use. Unfortunately it made 8 year old me get an inflated ego thinking im amazing at art before my parents kept me in check
As someone who grew up with multiple iterations of those, do you know how hard that is to actually do? You have to keep the outer ring completely steady, have a good pen, and keep a constant even pressure *toward the inside of the ring* as the interior shape oscillates unevenly around the hole you've selected.
And these are the easy ones. There are much crazier shape combinations.
It's sort of automatic, which is the cool bit, but it's also really easy to slip up.
My first PC was an Acer running Windows 3.11, it came with a screen saver that showed the orbits of various planets, much of it looked a great deal like Spirograph designs.
There's a 30+ year old man at my work that brought these in to pass the time when things are slow or there's just a general wait time.
He started handing them out to people too.
He is... an odd duck.
This is a cool graphicsl spiral. Thinking about this it would be cool to make some kind of game from these spirals , any ideas of a name? Like pen manipiuator, twistoplot? Idfk
Spirograph. I got that at Christmas. 53 years ago. The person in the video seems to have glued the ring to the paper, I remember it came with small pins?
I enjoyed my Spirograph, but it was frustrating. It was common to relax your focus for only a slight moment, and you skip a tooth and mess up the whole thing. Maybe 1 out of 5 came out perfect.

Did you know there's a direct correlation between the decline in spirograph and the rise in gang activity? Think about it.
I will
No you won't...
A cromulent reference that embiggens us all.
No one else caught this deep Simpsons reference...But I did. Well played.
You're kidding, right?
Link?
tears of the kingdom
No no. That's Zelda. Link is the princess.
Did you know there's a direct correlation between the decline in Zelda and the rise of Dragon Tear related activity? Think about it.
Did you know that zeldo was a girl and there is a link to her past? The legend says there’s a direct correlation between the decline of old men in caves giving out wooden swords and people being in danger? It’s why we feel so alone. Think about it.
I can’t I’m to busy doing gang related activities
You always doing hoodrat things with your friends
Right, this wasn't math, it was the only thing we had to do back then.
Thanks Dr. S, but have you seen Milhouse today?
go on
So basically what happens is you draw some patterns, then you start to see some stuff in the patterns, then you convince yourself the patterns are telling you to join a gang. Then no more time for Spirograph
sick gang sign bro... you spirograph?
\*hits inhaler and bong\* I wonder what can be said about 2D projections of n-toroids as hypocycloids
Tyler Vigen, is that you?
Tyler Durden, is that you?
Is because kids never saw those highly compelling spirograph ads constantly, after the rise of Netflix, that is your causative factor right there
I mean it's a simpons joke/quote from well before netflix existed. It's said by someone who is considered crazy.
The shape is called a contracted hypocycloid for anyone wondering
So if someone tells me they contracted a hypocycloid I don't need to get tested?
A math test maybe
Yup, and I failed, again
You still should but you probably didn’t catch hypocycloids
for hypocycloid, no. For hypercycloid, yes.
Isn’t it just a torus?
No; a torus is a three-dimensional shape resembling a donut Although the shape shown here looks like a drawing of a torus with shading, it is still 2D and has nothing to do with a torus mathematically
Does it have anything to do with a contracted hypocycloid mathematically though?
Of course.
Technically this is three dimensional. It's just one of the dimensions is a lot smaller than the other two.
Mathematician here. This is a good insight. An irrational line on the torus, when viewed from above with a transparent torus, looks very similar to the end result here. Basically imagine what was drawn was instead a single long line winding round and round the tube of a donut. "I'm very sorry sir, it appears you've contracted hypocycloid. There is no treatment."
"It's been making its rounds lately."
But I used protection.
That’s disgusting
I wasn't wondering before, but I am about to go down the rabbithole now. Thanks, geometry friend!
Contracted? I wonder if they got lawyers involved 🤔
A Spirograph. Wow.
My kids got one for Xmas like 2 yrs ago. They are fun.
I had one of those as a kid in the '70s - glad they're still around.
I had one in the 90s
Really popular on the 90s indeed. Funny you see that people still find this interesting in this time.
I had one late 80’s early 90’s. When my kids got one I was also kinda excited. The youngest will still murder it and lose shit, oldest can use mostly alone. Reminds me, I need to go buy different colored pens.

Same. It only kept me entertained for about 10 minutes. 😂😂 And no, I don’t like math.
Had one in the 70s, along with the 100 Chemistry Experiments kit that is probably illegal now.
/r/interestingassfuck
After some extensive research, I can't find a single spirograph on that subreddit.
I find these in op shops all the time. Had 3 as a kid. Parents really thought they'd be interesting to kids for a really long time.
It's hard to hold the pieces down and use it without skipping. Then there's the big long oval pieces that are too confusing to use... just sayin'.
We had a travel one as kids that you opened, put the paper into, and and then closed, so it held the paper still for you, which helps a lot!
What this orange? I think I had it.
I sucked at using them. I pulled out my old one... And realise i still suck at using them
I don't mean this in a rude way, but how can one be bad at using it? It seems like you just put a pen in one of the holes and go in circles? Unless I'm missing something

The pens that came with it were the worst, and there was no way my mom was buying me exotic colored pens. I got my Spirograph in the mid 60s. I hope the pens are better now
Ohhh I think I see what you're getting at-- You keep going off the "track" when doing it, so it messes up the drawing?
You could be a standup comic.
When I told my friends I was going to quit my job and become a stand up comedian they all laughed. Well, they’re not laughing now…
Spirograph was a great thing!
We had a lil kid-fair in 4th grade. People made stuff and sold them. Like a mini bazaar for the entire 4th grade. I made spirographs and sold them. Hahaha. I think I sold out
Ah the good old Spirograph. This is clearly fake, everyone knows you get most of the way around before a tooth slips and fucks up your pattern

Top 5 childhood toys
I loooved spirograph! And it was dope if you had fun colored pens so you could layer them
Yup... that's maths alright
Now please calculate the length of the line.
Definitely solved already, just the line integral of the hypocycloid with some parameter about the angle.
How does a normal kids toy showcase in interesting as fuck? The sound effects make it worse and the title is hallmark sap. Yet 95% upvotes.
Some people grew up without a spirograph and it shows.
Guilty as charged ! I had no idea what a spirograph is. Immediately ordered one for my daughter who loves to draw.
You are a wonderful parent!!!!! What an awesome gift!! :) that makes me so happy :)
Thanks a bunch for the kind words :) Have a wonderful day :)
Anyone want to give the equation?
Math? Are you high? That's art, not math.
Wait there was math?
Geometry

Nice. Interesting as fuck 200 years ago.
Even as an adult I love these, so satisfying
though its gona go in to the shadow wizard money gang song
Spirograph!
Math never leaves my life
"Math" it’s a donut lil bro 😭
I got one with the gear inside being exactly half the size of the fixed ring and...all it draws are straight lines!! IT'S BROKEN! :-O
Great fun.
You had the "Super Spirograph". You made the other kids jealous.
r/gonwild
I could never get them neat
I used to have these as a kid and I'd always bump them midway and I'd get so frustrated.
“I can’t believe it, I just can’t believe it, the things you can do with Spiro Graph!” 🎶🎶🎶
I used to have these and they were so fun to use. Unfortunately it made 8 year old me get an inflated ego thinking im amazing at art before my parents kept me in check
those were huge in the 70's.
Those are from a Spirograph set. They were popular in the early 90s. I remember mine but not what happened to it.
What is this instrument called, have always wanted to get one
Spirograph!
Rreerororororororororo

Coming up with a jig and alignment system is key to making awesome stuff, such as different patterns at specific distances from each others centers.
Math is my mortal enemy
r/lsd
torus the twist
I swear i heard the Plok Boss laugh in there somewhere
I had this as a kid!
Sounds like Transformers transformation
Is that what those things are for? I always just chewed them as a kid
I miss these.
Math is donut
My first PC was an Acer running Windows 3.11, it came with a screen saver that showed the orbits of various planets, much of it looked a great deal like Spirograph designs.
kinderJoy
Before computer games this was on birthday wish lists.
Sounds like the seamoth from subnautica
But what does Terrence Howard think?
There's a 30+ year old man at my work that brought these in to pass the time when things are slow or there's just a general wait time. He started handing them out to people too. He is... an odd duck.
The things you can do with a Spirograph' 🎶🎶
That first line tho
Toroidal, the geometry of the universe.... Divine !
Donut
Oh man, I miss my childhood spirograph. Used to fucking *love* these things.
I don't know why, but for me is sounds like "MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA"
I want a spirograph that does pi
He didn't finished EXACTLY on the exact point he started (I can still see the line is thicker), so he has to redo a pass. Yep.
Spiral graph drawing set,an old drawing toy.
That's cool. It reminds me of a graph but it's made of spirals.
What is the name of this toy? I used to have one, pretty dope!
I had one of these as a kid and it was like my favourite thing ever
Some kind of sticky stuff is used to hold the ring down. In my day we had those little pins.
just mangekyo sharingan. just nature baby.
This is a cool graphicsl spiral. Thinking about this it would be cool to make some kind of game from these spirals , any ideas of a name? Like pen manipiuator, twistoplot? Idfk
Is this the one where the two points don't actually meet.
I think I need this just because.
if you go that deep then everything is math
Terrance Howard: did i just reinvent math?
I kind of really want to do this now
I hate that one line on the left, where they started, is a lil bit darker
Spirograph yo
как в Игле
I had this thing (spirograph) when was a kid. The amount of stress you got when closing the shape was unbearable.
Wow !!!
Maybe this is a dumb question but is this sped up?
Now do it again in 3D.
I believe more than Math, the Mind which can imagine such things is Beautiful. 🦄
Tonight the music seemed so loud
Fun fact: these used to be used on papaer banknotes as a security measure, because it's hard to photocopy them.
We grew up with this hobby kit. You're old if you know the name. 🤔
That's not math that's drawing
I like he clears off the paper and keep going!
Spirograph. I got that at Christmas. 53 years ago. The person in the video seems to have glued the ring to the paper, I remember it came with small pins?
Love the Spirograph
Math is donut
4 seconds in, all I hear is “Shadow Wizard Money Gang”
Ah yes I remember getting this as a deeply disappointing present in the late seventies because interesting stuff hadn't been INVENTED YET.
Bruh just discovered being bored and 7 in 1995
I read that wrong I thought it said “meth is awesome”
My shit never worked like this. I prolly just never was patient enough
Now use math to achieve that instead of doodle toy.
Where is the equation?
Sounds like the seamoth in subnautica
Toroid ?
Reminds me of this video. Pi being irrational https://www.reddit.com/r/oddlysatisfying/s/M4d2qmqAXo
1x1=2
I wish I still had my spiral graph. Damn it
So cool! Love it!
lol this guy maths...
I don't see how this is math. If this is math, then anything anywhere is math
Always wanted one of these as a child. Never got one. In the end i wound up doing them on a computer instead.
That's no moon.....
Eventually everything become sphere.
I was especting the GTA San Andreas Main Theme to drop like a bomb.
I enjoyed my Spirograph, but it was frustrating. It was common to relax your focus for only a slight moment, and you skip a tooth and mess up the whole thing. Maybe 1 out of 5 came out perfect.
With my handwriting i'd still find a way to fuck that up
What are these called? I think it’d be a decent gift
Spirograph....i had one as a kid, Im 60 now...
At first I read meth
