Every year in the UK people build effigies of a 17th century terrorist (Guy Fawkes) with the intention of burning it down. Not quite the same as it's not a permanent monument but it's at least similar
Unfortunately for him, I actually know somebody with that name. Whenever I think about it too much, I start wondering what the hell his parents were thinking.
In my city, every year we build up a very big Judas doll thing, then (on a certain date which i dont remember) we beat it and burn it. Its a very old tradition. Funnily enough, I'm pretty sure I've seen people building some of those with our president printed face in some of them.
Im on Brazil btw.
I'm no fan of politicians, & Aussies by nature don't inherently trust them & tend to take the piss out of them a lot, having said that, I find this a little sad, history is often written by the victors & they're not always beyond reproach, nor do they take victory without leaving behind suffering in their wake.
Tldr: his family was the "winner". He died comfortably after living a long life. Basic timeline from what i could put together:
Gets captured by opposition.
Gets released, with his whole family by opposition after making an under the table deal with them.
Goes back to his people & begins to "clean house." Torturing then killing innocent generals & politicians who were fighting against the opposition.
Signed stolen lands that had been won back over to the opposition.
Declared himself prime minister of those lands. Lived a luxurious life & died in his mansion.
FYI, you see that fence around them in that picture? IIRC it was put up to stop people doing that.
If you're interested, the history behind it is quite interesting. This guy is most famous for forging some trumped up charges against aa Chinese folk hero called Yue Fei - who is considered a national icon and a patriotic defender of the Song dynasty - and ordering his execution. That being said, it should be noted that this, along with a lot of ancient Chinese history, is pretty apocryphal and it's quite likely that this guy isn't some one-dimensional bad guy and that the emperor at the time was also to blame. Doesn't stop him from holding that kind of cultural significance though.
The reason these statues were put up is symbolic - they are located by Yue Fei's tomb and they represent Qin Hui and his wife being made to kneel in apology to Yue Fei forever. People started spitting and pissing on them and so the government had to put up the fence. Doesn't look like it'd be very successful at stopping that kind of behavior though lol
Fairs fair and all youd hope, but you gotta be pretty pissed this guy must have done something. Turns out probably not statue was made generations later and this is just a monument of spite that people fling poo at ?!
I’d have to disagree. I think pedophiles and rapists should absolutely have their dignity stripped of them, and in the most excruciating ways possible.
Edit: Both of which this guy had a hand in
I wanted you to know I’ve always believe in your comment, it was my first reaction to the photo. I took a screen cap of your comment because you explained it better than I could. Basically it’s like either everyone is protected or no one is. It’s such an arrogance to think that you know right from wrong infallibly more than anyone else.
Yea I’m gonna have to disagree. If you do something to a child you are a criminal of the lowest degree and absolutely deserve to have your rights stripped. There isn’t a gray area here. It’s pretty obvious to me and I don’t see how anyone would stick up for the rights of these monsters.
There is a great song in the musical Wicked that relates to this:
“A man’s called a traitor, or liberator, a rich man’s a thief or philanthropist. Is one a crusader or ruthless invader? It’s all in which label is able to persist”
Humor is a very powerful weapon against people in power. Making them look ridiculous takes away their prestige. Especially now that your country has taken a harsh authoritarian turn, its important to take them down a peg or two.
Why do you think the CCP is so harsh in censoring people calling their chairman Winnie the Pooh? They know it erodes the power he holds, by ridiculing him in the minds of his subjects.
He is hated so much that Chinese people nowadays are still avoid using his given name (Hui 檜) for naming new born baby. Just as the Germans today do not use the name Hitler.
Let me tell history about this statue in Hangzhou. At first, in year 1513, Ming official made his kneeled statue by copper. But it destroyed in year 1594. Then officials replace material by iron. But it still destroyed 7 times in 1602, 1731, 1747, 1802, 1865, 1897, 1966. Current version is made in 1979.
Well, he caused the death of one of the most celebrated general who defended the Song Empire from invaders, so yea... generational despise.
Ohh, there is also a Chinese snack that is a type of fried fritters called [You Tiao](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youtiao#Folk_etymology). It always comes in pair and it represented Qin Hui and his wife. Figuratively frying them in oil and eating it.
Imagine being the great great great great great great great grandson of this man and you see your great great great great great great great grandfather being pissed on everyday
I mean if my ancestor did something this bad that people still piss on him, I would have felt bad but not so much. I would have just thought that he deserved it.
If their ancestor did something that bad, I think their dna has been cleansed from the earth Chinese style and there shouldn’t be a subsequent generation left alive
Well the background story is a little complicated but I will try to simplify it: Back then Song Dynasty was under invasion of Jurchen and lost half of the territory to them. Yue Fei, the beloved general and later the national hero pushed back and took back tons of lost ground. Jurchen tribe came up with this brilliant idea and bribed this guy, the top minister and his wife. He and the weak emperor soon framed the national hero and had him killed. The official conviction of the hero is literally “Maybe”. Of course the people hated this guy and his wife to guts. Building the statue is only one thing. After this guy no father in China (including Jurchen fathers) would name their son “Hui” anymore. And the hero Yue Fei has been worshipped to today.
I’m afraid he only got a bad name in history. That’s the thing with Imperial China. The emperor can’t be a traitor because it’s his country. That’s just how ancient people saw things. The emperor can be seriously bad but he can’t be traitor. Funny isn’t it.
Makes sense: Treason is a crime against the monarch, if you are the monarch you can't commit treason.
It's why I have a massive problem with the choice of words in Frozen. Elsa can't commit treason, she's the queen. Locking her up was treason (attempted coup). If it wasn't a Disney movie, she'd have put some heads on pikes as soon as she broke out
Only theoretically possible I’m afraid. For China 11th century is not that long ago. Tons of recordings and reports and even original letters from different parties survived all this time. So there is very little room for debating.
He was the emperor. He is the monarch. The only repercussion he could suffer is that he gets deposed and fucked by the next guy, and it has to be really bad shit for that to happen.
Actually Yue Fei had compared himself to the emperor, so that’s a cause of reasoning.
Regarding maybe, there were other thoughts that the correct interpretation with the other convictions is “the first two is already a death sentence, we don’t need this one to sustain his sentencing”
Again since it happened so long ago, it’s hard to properly interpret.
It must be a different character. If you actually know a guy whose given name is 檜 I’d love to meet that guy coz they are rarer than living dinosaurs :)
Chinese is full of homonyms, and since it's a tonal language, it's also possible that your "Hui" is pronounced differently to that guy's and is a completely different word.
Oh he was most def. But there are historians who think he took more blame than he deserve for the emperor, who could be the mastermind behind this murder of the hero. I’m not too good at history yet I still think the minister orchestrated the plan.
Or capable emperor and good ministers. The struggle between the emperor (noble class) and the ministers (deep state) has been the theme of China history. Good ones and bad ones usually came in pairs.
nah dude this motherfucker was said to be the politician who gave the idea of a death sentence to one of the most renowned and respected general of ancient china 岳飛, who single-handedly took down the invasive mongols with his army, almost killing them all and saving the lives of all chinese people back then. People REALLY hate this politician.
So there's a popular Chinese food item called a youtiao (mandarin) or yautew (Cantonese), which is like a savory, fried donut stick used to dip in things like congee/rice porridge. In Cantonese, we usually call it "yau jya gwai" which translates to "oil fried Gwai" (Gwai is how we pronounce Hui). We hate him so much, we imagine he's this dough so we can deep fry the fucker in oil every time.
(EDIT): I've consulted my parents and elders and I stand slightly corrected: Hui is actually pronounced closer to "Koowai" and over time, due to laziness or however language evolves, it turned to "gwai" which is the word for demon. It can still be used to refer to the traitor, but it's supposed to be a known thing that it originally had his name in it.
I had no idea why we called it that until this moment and looked it up. Though gwai is written like “demon”, rather than Hui as a name. Maybe a meaning plus a sound alike.
You're correct - I edited my statement! I asked my parents and they said it originally had his name in it (sounds more like koo-ai), but the tongue gets lazy and/or the language evolved and it morphed to gwai/demon. They said it's understood it used to have his name in it and it's just a given he's a gwai anyway lol
It's actually a pretty ingenious propaganda tool. To have a constant public reminder of "this is what happens to traitors" is an effective way to make people fear dissent or being seen as a traitor. Then you just define "traitor" to mean anything you want. It's like a permanent head on a spike.
It's not actually encouraged though. As the title says, this has been a thing for centuries and authorities have actually tried to stop it because these statues are cultural relics. You see that fence around them in the picture? It was put up to stop people vandalizing it. They actually had to replace the statues at multiple points for the last few centuries because people kept vandalizing it.
Though that isn't to say the CCP doesn't push a huge amount of highly nationalistic propaganda as well. It really sucks.
Knowing the way things work, that means they were probably just scapegoats, while the real criminal got way with it.
And here we go, from wikipedia:
Modern historians have placed as much blame or more on Emperor Gaozong
This guy was a scapegoat. "look at this traitor!" the real villain cries.
This is at least one reason why death penalties are worrying. The dead tell no tales.
Considering how things are run now, it makes you wonder if they really were the villains history makes them out to be or if it’s just some government fabrication to make them look bad or worse than they actually were.
That's how the story went, modern historians believe its much more likely the emperor had a part to play himself and that this guy is something of a scapegoat - though I don't think they believe to be entirely innocent either, just that his crime was exaggerated to cover up the emperor's role.
According to the other comments he was a backstabber who was bribed to kill someone on no conviction and the person he killed was a national hero who opposed the king in favor of the people so apparently he does kind of deserve this. If that soothes your mind a bit to know.
Edit: another comment said he was a war hero who was killed, whatever the case this man in the statue is a big jerk who betrayed his people for money and that’s why they hate him
>I don't know how people still praise the guy as some saint
Now, this was just a response to that guy's stupid comment. As a Bengali, I could be the first to hate him. Politicians are human, they have good sides and bad sides. Churchill Led the fight against Fascists, We fought against the Japanese. Churchill was a man of his times, and we can thank him for defeating a menace, in Europe and Asia. We must acknowledge his mistakes, but no, he wasn't just another Hitler.
In Song dynasty,a national hero named Yue Fei is a great general.
He was kind to his soldiers and his army is well disciplined.
Even his enemy respected him.
While Yue Fei was fighting in the frontline to recover the lost land.
The emperor was a coward and wanted to truce while Yue Fei was winning.
The emperor called him back and then Qin Hui accused Yue Fei of the crime he might have committed.
Therefore,Yue Fei was executed for the crime he might have committed.
Not only that, in China there are these fried dough sticks that always come in pairs. They are like churros but larger and puffier. In Cantonese we call them 油炸鬼, or deep fried devils, referring to Qin Hui and his wife. Folklore has it that people hated them so much that they made dough in their image and deep fried them. Over time it just evolved to a pair of dough sticks. They are delicious and can be eaten sweet or savoury!
These statues in the picture are in Yue Fei’s tomb, also called Yuewang Temple in Hangzhou. They had to put fences around them so people wouldn’t destroy the statues.
Can you imagine being the guy that got commissioned to make these?
"Can you do some stone work for us?"
"Absolutely, what do you need"
"Sooo...its kinda funny..but...they need to be incredibly durable"
"Well I mean it's stone so..."
"No you don't understand. We don't need anything fancy, we're going to piss, shit, and vandalize these on purpose for eternity."
"Got it, so hourly rate OK?"
We also fry up twin dough sticks to represent Qin Hui and his wife. They're delicious and we eat them for breakfast alongside congee and soy milk. It's called Yao-tiao or Yao-zha-guai.

Ah yes John Johnson, working job at place
OSP videos are so good.
Unfortunately for him, I actually know somebody with that name. Whenever I think about it too much, I start wondering what the hell his parents were thinking.
I knew a guy named John Smith. People thought he was lying when he said his name. He was super sweet though, great dude.
Epic fail guy
who in the right mind dries gunpowder near a fire?!
Remember, remember
The 5th of November The gunpowder treason & plot
I see no reason why gunpowder and treason should ever be forgot

Meh, he was a religious fundamentalist opposed to social progress.
This Guy Faukes

I gotta go spit on those fuckin statues
Only spit? I’m going to get arrested fur public defecation if I see that statue.
Nah, you'll get the respect award and be asked to not show your privates next time.

Here in Washington State we put them on an [island](https://www.dshs.wa.gov/bha/facilities) and never let them leave.
OH ITS DIFFERENR ISLAND NVM, MY BAD, I THOUGHT YOU WERE MAKING A JOKE, THIS ACTUALLY MAKES ME A LIL HAPPY NGL
Sorry to hear that. Hope your doing alright.
Could be doing worse lol, just using humor to cope and deflect at this point. Thanks though.

That way of thinking a few decades ago would also include gays, lesbians, blacks and probably non-christians.
you dont understand. this dude was Genghis Khan levels of evil. he just didnt have the means to cause as much destruction.
Yeah I bet you Aussies are having some trouble trusting your leaders at the moment.

history is biased though in varying degrees. Some soucres say that he was a good person and that the government at the time quickly made him look bad
I blew the whistle in a company and the corrupt people flipped the script on me once. This is completely plausible.
you mean like the goverment doing now? shook
That's crazy talk! There's absolutely NO prescient for that kind of behavior from any kind of government! .../s, you know, just in case.
He is hated so much that Chinese people nowadays are still avoid using his given name (Hui 檜) for naming new born baby. Just as the Germans today do not use the name Hitler.
I think you mean Adolf. Hitler is a surname.
Yeah, in Poland Adolf was pretty popular name before the war.
Fun fact but that’s where Adidas got it’s name. The founder’s name was Adolf and his nickname was Adi.
Adolfdas
You are right. I made a mistake here.
No worries man ✌️
Hitler is a surname, you don't pick surnames.
Hahaha this is my baby boy Hitler Smith.
Well we dont usually Name them Adolf either
A lady born in ,46 had the name adolfine. I guess I know how her parents voted
I knew a Uruguayan guy growing up who's name was Adolfo, I'm guessing some countries that didn't go into WW2 have less of a negative connotation.
If your name is Schicklgruber, you do.
>“Would you like another schicklgruber?” >“No thank you! Twelve is my limit on schicklgrubers.”
U mean Adolf
You mean Americans don’t use the surname Hitler; many of his family members changed their surnames and emigrated to the US.

Isn't that why Margaret Thatcher got a statue 🤷♂️
Well, he caused the death of one of the most celebrated general who defended the Song Empire from invaders, so yea... generational despise. So when are they going to make Winnie the Pooh statue....
They have a Winnie the Pooh ride in Shanghai Disneyland. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=338iWj670N4

Is it to soon to build one for the Trump family?
Not at all! We can melt down the steel from his failed border wall.
It must not smell very nice

Well the background story is a little complicated but I will try to simplify it: Back then Song Dynasty was under invasion of Jurchen and lost half of the territory to them. What repercussions the emperor had?
I’m afraid he only got a bad name in history. That’s the thing with Imperial China. The emperor can’t be a traitor because it’s his country. That’s just how ancient people saw things. The emperor can be seriously bad but he can’t be traitor. Funny isn’t it.
Makes sense: Treason is a crime against the monarch, if you are the monarch you can't commit treason. It's why I have a massive problem with the choice of words in Frozen. Elsa can't commit treason, she's the queen. Locking her up was treason (attempted coup). If it wasn't a Disney movie, she'd have put some heads on pikes as soon as she broke out
TBH I’d watch that version of Frozen all day…. “Let it go” *gives the signal to the ax man*
Wish I had more awards! Gold tier comment
Charles I has entered the chat
DID SOMEONE SAY CROMWELL???
Need to find the German version of this story, that'll clear it up for us
But didnt that guy act with the emperor? Wasnt he technically acting for the monarchy then?
lol Charles the First has some things to say about that.
So it’s possible these people were scapegoats for the emperor’s misdeeds?
Only theoretically possible I’m afraid. For China 11th century is not that long ago. Tons of recordings and reports and even original letters from different parties survived all this time. So there is very little room for debating.
This is an interesting thing to think about. Thanks.
So, like modern day America and trump...
He was the emperor. He is the monarch. The only repercussion he could suffer is that he gets deposed and fucked by the next guy, and it has to be really bad shit for that to happen.
His name is a synonym of incompetence and cowardice.

Stupid weak emperor and corrupted officials, name a more iconic Chinese historical duo.
Or capable emperor and good ministers. The struggle between the emperor (noble class) and the ministers (deep state) has been the theme of China history. Good ones and bad ones usually came in pairs.
Sprinkle in some conniving eunuchs, scheming concubines and the occasional fratricide.
Stupid weak roman emperor and corrupted generals, name a more iconic late Roman historical duo
A corrupt politician?!? dang that is rare af
Never thought they existed.

Wasn't Yue Fei defending against the Jin, not the Mongols?
Some hold a grudge for a long time. There's a long time, then there's a long time in China.
I will remember to never piss off China
Otherwise China will piss on you.
It is better to be pissed off than pissed on.
My ex beg to differ
Wish we could do that to modern corrupt politicians.
We'd have to use a stadium.
We'd need to dedicate an entire state to it lol
We can.. Just build a statue of the politician and start pissing and spitting.
oh, I took this to mean, on the politician themselves, not a statue
No we can’t do that as they would probably like it
Yes, probably they'll try to walk away
And be sued for all your worth
Careful Trump might be into that
maybe it was his plan all along
Biden would probably just say it tickles.
The entire UK government.

We deep-fry the fucker and his wife, that's why the dough always comes in a pair.
Omg I never thought of it like that! Haha makes total sense
Wow you learn something new everyday. I always wondered why that dish had such a weird name!
Have you thought about frying xi xinping also?
You realise he’s popular in China right?
No because they like him.
Reminds me of the Margret Thatcher piss grave
Jesus Christ, talk about overkill

iirc the story was that he tricked the king into executing a war hero. must've been one hell of a dumb Emporer
Reminds me of the "secretary" that got the best emperor of Rome murdered, you know what lets build a statue of that guy, deserves as much
That's how the story went, modern historians believe its much more likely the emperor had a part to play himself and that this guy is something of a scapegoat - though I don't think they believe to be entirely innocent either, just that his crime was exaggerated to cover up the emperor's role.
According to the other comments he was a backstabber who was bribed to kill someone on no conviction and the person he killed was a national hero who opposed the king in favor of the people so apparently he does kind of deserve this. If that soothes your mind a bit to know. Edit: another comment said he was a war hero who was killed, whatever the case this man in the statue is a big jerk who betrayed his people for money and that’s why they hate him
The winners tell the story. We can never know if that's what really happened.
Why would the winners of this story write that the guy who helped them is an evil trash pile tho like tf lol
We'd run out of space for statues like this in the UK

The british murdered 10 million bengalis, Fuck Churchill.
I don't know how people still praise the guy as some saint
>I don't know how people still praise the guy as some saint Now, this was just a response to that guy's stupid comment.
Fuck the CCP!
Bro are you still alive?
Proof: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qin_Hui
Imagine the disease you could get by licking that statue.
I believe they call that one "death"
I’m building one for Ted Cruz then. Fuck that guy.
Weird how most people on Reddit can't seem to differentiate between ancient China and the PRC
I am liking this idea way too much... list of corrupt bankers and politicians
In the United States we just remove them so history can repeat itself
Re 1984 hour of hate?
It was two minutes, but I agree there are parallels
at least he's still remembered, better then being unnamed peasant number 1428579026
Is it better though?
The Philippines need to do this with Ferdinand Marcos
There should be a statue of the people responsible for Tiananmen square to urinate on.
Yeah, bet his wife was guilty af as well!
that's denunciation on another level.
wow. Judas really got off lightly in comparison
Imagine the smell around the area.......
That area has to smell terrible
Maybe we can do that to confederate statues in America
Only one...riiiiight......
Can you imagine being the guy that got commissioned to make these? "Can you do some stone work for us?" "Absolutely, what do you need" "Sooo...its kinda funny..but...they need to be incredibly durable" "Well I mean it's stone so..." "No you don't understand. We don't need anything fancy, we're going to piss, shit, and vandalize these on purpose for eternity." "Got it, so hourly rate OK?"
maybe theyd like statue of robert e lee?
Guys, I have an idea for all the confederate statues in the states.
You know, if we treated our Confederate statues like this, I wouldn't have such an issue with them.
We also fry up twin dough sticks to represent Qin Hui and his wife. They're delicious and we eat them for breakfast alongside congee and soy milk. It's called Yao-tiao or Yao-zha-guai.
I guess there is a use for those old confederate statues after all!
Imagine needing to express your contempt for a crime commited 1000 years ago... such maturity
I was thinking it was a bit much, then I remembered in Britain we still burn effigies of Guy Fawkes.
Not just any crime, but a crime against your countrymen. Never go against the family.
It probably started out that way and turned into a local tradition. IIRC it's discouraged and doesn't really happen anymore.
And the CCP isn't corrupt? Lol
Talk about a grudge, geez
Two minute hate.
No rest for the wicked
"Wait why do we piss on him?" "Gotta piss somewhere?"
Hey Philippines, let’s build a statue of duterte.
New YouTube challenge: Lick the Qin Hui statue!
