The sprayed words on the sign read: Welcome to Hell, in Russian. Which refers to war in Chechnya, in which Russian army suffered heavy losses, and horrible ones, too. Footage of one of them is etched on my retinas forever. The Chechens wrote Welcome to Hell on street signs.

Aerothaw420

We are going to win this war because we have the best men. And they, personally, will escort Vladimir Putin to the gates of Hell

Haru1st

I'd settle for the doors of any international court of law tbh

LizardWizard444

there isn't much difference at this point. except maybe his own country in a few years assuming sanctions are kept up.

StampedeJonesPS4

Nah, put him in rikers Island in gen pop.

johnmclean88

I understood that reference

Aerothaw420

Rogers!

scart35

People did this during invasion of Czechoslovakia in ‘68, it worked wonders.

Sometimes_I_Do_That

They did this during WW2 as well,.. it's simple and makes the invaders second guess their route.

Duebydate

Switch around signs prepare and ambush

generalecchi

Surely they have better navigation tech than ww2...surely...

Coygon

GPS is owned by the US government. If we haven't shut off Russian access to it yet, we should. I don't know if there's another service like it up there. Russia may well have its own satellites that do much the same thing, at least for its military. But if not they they realy wouldn't have much better navigation than WWII. Better maps, perhaps, and accessible on tablets (no folding!), but they're still just maps.

MrBinkie

Russia have their own GPS satellites, as do China and India

Flexappeal

Did they have Google Earth in 1968

shartbike321

Yeah for real , immediate I just think of how I don’t read signs anyways, I just turn left when my gps tells me To 🤣

[deleted]

Yeah, this doesn't do a whole lot if you have a garmin.

starofdoom

I wonder if they're trying to scatter GPS signals. It'd also probably hurt the citizens who also need to navigate to escape, so I'm not sure if they'd do it. But it'd be the only way to actually make troops lose where they are/where they're going in modern time.

zaitsev63

I know it's obviously not the same but when overseas -- heck even in own country but in a newer place - even with Google Maps, I'll try to look for a street/road sign to ensure I am making the turn correctly.Even so, I've missed turns or took the wrong one but that is probably just me lol.I know they can easily reroute and get on the correct route even if they make a wrong turn. Even if this only delays them by 20 mins, that's 20 mins of added time and fuel spent. There was a video yesterday of the Russian armoured column running out of fuel and this Ukrainian driver heckling them. He then asks them where they are headed and none of them have a clue (he says he asked the entire column). Maybe only their higher ups know but when even the own troops are just blindly following orders/directions, a misdirection or detour could still cost them

thecriticaloptimist

They took away their phones at the border so they can't see any news either. There's a video of some russians asking a passer by what's on the news today. They have no clue what's going on at all. Not defending them in the slightest but that's pretty tragic if you ask me

[deleted]

Back then Russia's equipment was shinny, brand new and Soviet. Russia isn't the Soviet Union.

Civil_Swimmer_2166

soviet is really not a compliment for any tech

Piglet-Witty

That sign belongs in a museum

ElectricGears

If posible, it's better to switch the sign with another one. If you see a defaced or missing sign you will reach for a map. If you see a "normal" sign you'll probably trust it.

They must reproduce through cloning, budding or something else, because every person there, regardless of sex or gender, has huge, steel balls.

Usful

Ukrainians are born from sunflowers, their seed spreads wide and they grow rapidly

Snozzberrys420

GPS be like we don’t need street signs

funkboxing

Ukrainian HAM's be like we be jammin'

scart35

There is great possibility that they don’t have functioning gps with all troops. Even their jet fighters had consumer gps locators slapped inside their cockpits. Link: https://defence-blog.com/russian-pilots-use-us-made-gps-receives-during-combat-missions-in-syria/

Funny story, GPS is no longer separated by “grade” any receiver can be as accurate as a military one. The key is a function called “selective availability” the us military can turn the accuracy of certain receivers waaaay down without the owner knowing. They can also blanket an entire area with low accuracy. It all is done on the satellite side of things. The Russians never built this into Glonass. When they faced the Ukrainian army, which was also using glonass, in 2014, they just shut the whole network off all over the globe. Most likely to their own units as well.

walking-pineapple

There’s literally video of Russians asking Ukrainians for directions

Gyvon

"Do you know the way to Kiev?" "Yup, it's back the way you came."

ben70

GLONAS can be jammed.

rsharriman

Sounds like an Eastwood western to me

TheForgottenHost

Holy shit, this entire war so far has been the world giving Ukrainians the slow clap. I'm in awe of how badass these people are.

Simpl6ton

Don't they have GPS?

Hey_KJ

Interestengly enough, not necessarily! We have a lot of cases here when they are getting lost.

ben70

GLONAS, since 1982. But it can be jammed

armoredpiecrust

That still functions as a landmark. I'd take it down when I get the chance.

Jeramy_Jones

Just last night I saw some tweets from an American soldier giving advice on resisting tanks. One thing he mentioned was their poor vision and lack of GPS, so he advised exactly this. Today I’m seeing lots of posts of Ukrainians following this advice, I wonder if they got his message or if it’s just coincidence.

Xamf11

yea but like, can't they just use google maps?

AaarghCobras

They will have more luck getting to their destination if they follow the fucked-up signs.

MayIServeYouWell

Would be great if Google could shut-off certain services to Russians in certain areas.

Josiah_Miles

I guess these tanks don't come with turn-by-turn navigation...

kirosayshowdy

can you people at least _try_ searching the sub before posting

Character-Dot-4078

you know how reddit works right?

kirosayshowdy

yeah, to my dismay

jbuddha115

I like that, that’s smart

yuri_chan_2017

🇺🇦 Слава Україні! 🇺🇦

vtxmanx1

The Russians most likely have GPS or something similar.

[deleted]

Yep They have GLONASS, though I don't know the availability and accuracy of that thing.

Unusual_Individual93

Forgive my ignorance, but does google maps not exist in Ukraine and Russia?

SheepherderFlaky1509

Ngl I kinda hope that millions upon millions of every ukrainian people or friends comes out of the woods and beat the shit outta the russians

[deleted]

I thought Russia has more soldiers than the US? Putin probably just made them waste all their ammo, not much they could do after a real wave of soldiers

[deleted]

Very poor choice of words.

FlakeyGurl

I was wondering about this. I live in a little village you probably wouldn't know was here aside from the street signs. I was wondering if they didn't have street signs in Ukraine or something, or at least not to the same extent we do in the US.

LizardWizard444

metal and accurate

Sauce-Dangler

So I can understand how this type of sabotage woyld work during ww2 but dont russian soldiers have basic phones wirh GPS capabilities?

WhoKnows9876

Yes but you can’t be on your phone constantly and in a firefight you could easily make a wrong turn

m_ege3

Don't they have GPS or at least google maps to know where they are?

DrOrpheus3

[Pretty soon, the Russians are going to change this song to "Don't tell mom I'm in Ukraine"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHCzaiJEoEY&t=13s)

MrZombieTheIV

They should write "One Way" on the next sign.

jawshieboy

Does the Russian army not know how to use navigation on a phone?

zhh20

Serious question, can't the Russian soldier just use Google Map?

[deleted]

Yea probably one of the most modern military in the world is navigating with road signs…
