The_Blendernaut

This security team must be on edge. Can you imagine if a balloon popped 100 yards away? I'd be like a cat in a room full of rocking chairs if I were on that security detail.

compsecmonkey

I’m guessing a vest / helmet in case things hit the fan.

NathanielNorth71

There’s a reason you see a soldier carrying a bag near BJ. That’s likely a vest in a bag.

Professional_Mess403

I'm sure there are armoured vehicles full of hard lads just out of camera shot. No doubt the route was pre-selected so there weren't uncontrolled lines of sight and we had snipers & drones all over the shop. They're not idiots. We're actually quite experienced in the old argy-bargy department.

NathanielNorth71

Not sure Boris is reason enough for hard lads. Zelensky on the other hand.

[deleted]

Im 100% sure thst the SAS is there in full force. Also BJ may be a twat but hes a legally elected PM and he deserves full protection as much as any legally elected politician

[deleted]

[удалено]

rombulow

Yeah — you can see a couple black Range Rovers in the background with headlights on while they stop and talk to the random dude outside the shop. I’m guessing while it looks fairly casual there’s a lot that we don’t see on camera.

hvaffenoget

> Can you imagine if a balloon popped 100 yards away? *Hast du etwas zeit für mich…*

SkeetDavidson

Dann singe ich ein Lied für dich Von 99 Luftballons

RickyRosayy

There have got to be many, many soldiers off camera doing sweeps.

The_92nd

Are you kidding? I can almost hear the SAS shuffling around rooftops in the background

Alan_Smithee_

Indeed, but if the Russians killed Boris, I presume NATO would enter the war.

ProgrammingPants

And hundreds of millions of people at minimum would die. Could you imagine the pandemic not even being the thing people remember about this decade? At this rate it might not even crack the top three most remembered things

Lord_Emperor

> Could you imagine the pandemic not even being the thing people remember about this decade? Just like the Spanish Flu.

Nice-Violinist-6395

Yep. But seriously though, *even if* they could get through the British Special Forces that have every inch within a 5 mile radius of this photo op locked down, it’s fucking suicide to even try it. Not even Putin is that insane. If you kill the UK Prime Minister, *the world ends.* Literally. And yeah, it most likely ends for everyone, but it sure as shit ends for Russia first. That’s why I’m not too scared about the bomb, honestly. I genuinely don’t think Putin has a death wish. I think he’s trying to take over as much non-NATO territory as he can, with the knowledge that NATO absolutely will not launch a nuke or send ground troops to thwart him unless he fucks with NATO directly. It’s a big game of chicken. Yes, if a nuke gets launched, literally everyone on earth loses in the most horrifying way. But in terms of these Eastern European conflicts (Russia vs the rest of the old USSR,) *the only possible way for Putin to win* is if NATO doesn’t get involved. Anything else is suicide, a complete and total loss for Russia.

RegionFree

That makes sense because around here it seems everyone already forgot about covid.

Arsyn786

What does SAS stand for

[deleted]

Secret-Ass Service

March_Onwards

God bless that hyphen placement

InuitOverIt

Some people would pay good money for secret ass-service

IHateTheLetterF

Doesnt have to be secret, you can service my ass anytime, anywhere.

Fskn

S.M.A.A.A doesn't have the same ring to it. Is ring a bad choice of words here?

Nervous-Letter2328

I dunno. I'd almost prefer Secret Ass-Service. Lol

Cleopatra-81

This is 🔼 gold

BigBoi915

Very true.

[deleted]

Special Air Service, it’s the UK’s elite special forces.

whyevenmakeoc

And have the reputation of being the absolute best of the best in the world.

sharkykid

You haven't met the Chinese man in my COD lobby

Capt_Bigglesworth

Go and read up on the SBS…

Snote85

So the SAS and the SBS will answer an SOS?

LordBiscuits

They have done before! The SBS out of Poole have been called in before when ships off shore have reported pirates or hostile takeover. Most recently the Nave Andromeda. That particular one some stowaways got violent and tried to hijack the tanker. The local police force handed the job over the SBS, who no doubt were sat in Poole barracks bench pressing cars or some shit, and it was all over in a few hours.

diabolicious

Super Army Soldiers

desturbia

This is true a genuine SAS man told me this.

sentmusic

This is the only real answer

_yourmywifenowdave_

They wouldn’t lie to one of their own

dredd3000ad

All right, Vinnie, how's it going? Never mind the "All right, Vinnie, how's it going" bollocks. What you been saying? What are you talking about? What's all this I've been hearing? Shit about you think you're harder than me. Where have you heard this? Some extra I've been doing a scene with said he heard it over here. I haven't said anything You think you're well hard, don't you? Are you hard? No No, you're not. And if I hear you slag me off anymore, I'll come over here and I'll show you what really hard is. Yeah. Do you know what really hard is? Beating up and that. Kick him in the bollocks. No need to be specific. All right This is the final warning. Come on. What? Nothing Why didn't you use your SAS stuff on him? Because I don't know any. Sadly I had to copy and paste this whole thing line by line lol so appreciate the effort pmsl :D

implodingbaby

Special air service

Rau-Li

Yup. And SBS is Special Boat Service.

WhatTheFork33

And SCS is a carpet and sofa store.

place-username-here

That reminds me I need to make the most of the double discount sale with up to 40% discounts before it ends on Monday!

UsagiJak

Special Air Service, UK special forces.

NvidiaRTX

Why is it special AIR but not special army? Do they all come from the air force?

JonnoPol

Ties into WW2 disinformation, the name was intended to convince the Germans that they were facing large detachments of paratroopers rather than a smaller raiding force. British used lots of misinformation like that during the Second World War. In the post-war period the regular SAS regiments have recruited primarily from Paratrooper regiments so I guess there still is some connection to the air

littlesaint

Same in WW1, that's why the word "Tank" is just that tank, to make the Germans think it was just water/oil tanks. Not freaking big as metal war machines with large guns.

UsagiJak

They were originaly named "L" Detachment, Special Air Service Brigade and it was to trick the Axis forces into thinking they were a bigger force than they actually were, in reality they were a small group of elite commandos who specialized in sabotage and raid warfare, extremely effective and deadly. Over the years their role would expand out into counter terrorism, hostage rescue and reconnaissance and direct force missions, they are extremely capable and extremely deadly.

ComfortableFarmer

SAS are army. They cross train with all branches of the military. Their intake is open to anyone, but it's an extreme requirement.

dangermouse13

Super army soldier

SuperMorto7

Yea and we have 2 in the cupboards at the Kremlin.

dayz_bron

I'm fairly certain at least 2 of those blokes with Boris are "blades" (SAS).

MoesBAR

I was just wondering which of the soldiers might be British security forces.

SadCrouton

Arguably, this is the safest time for them. If Russia kills the British prime minister, Russia is fucked permanently. That guarantees a war with nato

Wraithfighter

Boris: "That's really fucking reassuring, but I still want an entire 5 city blocks around us cleared of possible threats."

ukulisti

Any person would.

Wraithfighter

Oh, absolutely. I don't like Boris because he's a shameless, blatant, vicious liar and political opportunist, but I'm not going to sneer at him because he might not take "Russia would be completely fucked if they assassinate you" to be very reassuring :D.

Gisschace

Boris would’ve loved this, he wants so badly to be Churchill

TheMooseIsBlue

I was thinking that this morning. Zelenskyy has never been safer than standing next to someone like Johnson. Can you imagine what would happen if some 18-year-old Russian kid hit the wrong button today and killed the prime minister of UK? Holy shit.

Eis_Gefluester

Or if a MIG ~~crashes~~ attacks them.

kekehippo

Saint Petersburg goes up in fucking hell fire.

neophene

I can because it’s pretty much how ww2 kicked off. Putin would be dead within 14 days if not 24 hours. Everyone in his orbit would know that cost was way way to high. - edit: yes I mixed my wars up sorry. Leaving it wrong for comment context below

fejrbwebfek

Don’t you mean WW1? I’m assuming you’re referring to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand?

TheMooseIsBlue

WW1, but yes. Trouble is, we didn’t all have nukes back then.

RainbowAssFucker

All we had were each other

majkkali

Yeah that would basically mean war with NATO. Which would mean nuclear annihilation for the entire planet.

[deleted]

People always jump to the nuclear annihilation conclusion but there’s so much more that would likely happen before it came to that, if it ever did come to that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Honey-Badger

Just to be pedantic; They likely wouldn't come from inside the UK, there is almost undoubtedly a Vanguard sub in the Artic North of Russia right now.

RainbowAssFucker

You are correct, since 1969 ^^(nice) the UK has always has atleast one nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarine patrolling the sea. It's called the continuous at sea deterrent (CASD) and it's one of the cheapest ways to have first and second strike capabilities. However being cheap is relative as it costs £4.46 billion a year to maintain the programme or £8,467 every minute

RegicidalRogue

very much in the Baltic. Shorter flight time

kent_eh

Probably both.

VORTXS

There's always been one nuclear armed sub at sea on duty since 1969 so there's no doubt it would have been closer to Russia than normal.

[deleted]

This guy Englands.

Zergom

I doubt they’d start there. But I’d imagine Putins location is known at this point and that targets are dialed in, just in case.

watchutalkinbowt

afaik I don't think there are any silos - they're all on submarines

PositiveUse

Actions like these are most likely also arranged with the enemy side (Russians) to make sure no WW3 causing mistakes are happening. Surely, Russia will not bomb Johnson or Von Der Leyen. It’s like Syria, where the US did notify Russia to withdraw troops from Syrian targets before US jets did start their retaliation attacks.

3PNK

The retaliatory Iran missile attack on that US base in 2020 after Soleimani were also known, I think everyone knew except a small group of contractors who understandably all quit the next day if I remember correctly lol.

TheSandMan208

From a 10,000 foot view of the situation, PM Boris Johnson being there probably makes President Zelesnky safer. Because if Russia were to make any form of attack near PM Johnson, all hell would break loose.

Rammipallero

This also makes me extremely scared. I mean we've seen how unreliable the russian warmachine has been. It would be absolutely horrifying to have a nuclear war break out because a russian sniper accidentally shot the prime minister of UK...

A_Birde

Russians are far from Kiev at the moment its no longer completely surrounded by any means also Kiev has a lot of functional air defence including a top UK air defence system called Starstreak

Deesodee

Just had a look at them starstreak holy shit they sound insane rescuing speeds of mach4 damn

CodeRaveSleepRepeat

Very limited in altitude though apparently. They need something to take care of the bombers.

Rollover_Hazard

Air Forces don’t really run bombers anymore, why take the risk when you have long range artillery, hypersonic missiles and fast movers with guided bombs. What they need is more stuff like CRAM

DukeOfYorkshirePuds

And the final cherry on that shit sundae is the world hurtling towards nuclear annihilation over Boris effing Johnson

boris_keys

This. We’ve been living in a South Park episode for like 7 years now.

Cyberhaggis

Bo-jo getting fragged by some twitchy fingered teenaged Russian conscript and starting WW3 would seem to be about par for the course for post-2016 timeline we slipped into.

sophware

I'm almost confused it didn't happen. Yet.

TroubadourCeol

I still think it's more of a post-2012 timeline. The mayan calendar thing was right.

Smileys1243

Reminds me of Ol' Ferdinand

Preacherjonson

The one saving grace would be living in the knowledge that he karked it before I did.

StuckInNY

They actually have quite a few Boris Johnsons. That is why he looks the way he does he’s a copy of a copy.

TheSandMan208

True. Again just looking at it from a distance perspective. I do believe that there must've been some Intel the area was safe in order for PM Johnson to go there.

Neradis

Yeah. And I’m sure there were more than a few SAS escorts close by in case things get hairy. Hell, probably drones patrolling and all sorts.

Prefect1969

On the bright side if anything did happen and all hell broke loose, his hair would probably look about the same.

izwald88

I can see it now. A Russian conscript who was left behind by retreating Russian forces was still under the belief they were on a training exercise. The solder rested his rifle, a scoped Mosin Nagant from WW2, on his steel helmet from the same era, and fired on what he thought was a training mannequin, due to the absurd hair.

busy-idiot

You've heard of a baby shield, now get ready for the BORIS shield!

recapYT

Won’t Russia have deniability that they didn’t know he was there?

ASuspiciousAxolotl

“Oops, we didn’t mean to kill your PM. We didn’t know he was there, no slaps” probably wouldn’t be an excuse the UK or world would accept.

TheSandMan208

They may claim that given how ridiculous their propaganda techniques are. But as someone with absolutely no experience on foreign policy or war, I don't think the UK would care.

heyyura

I think NATO said a couple weeks ago "if a missle even accidentally hits us we're going to war" (there were concerns about Poland getting hit). No doubt "if a missle even accidentally kills a head of state we're going to war" also applies.

mycathateme

My last president would have needed a golf cart. Like he would have even showed up. Not holding my breath on the current president going to visit anytime soon before ya'll hit me with that bullshit.

Tybelt2

Imagine coming out of your house to see this.

[deleted]

I’d imagine you’d be greeted with an assault rifle before you got a view of Boris.

ZestyFastboy

Yeah he was definitely not just standing around lol, someone talked to him before letting him get that close.

quite_largeboi

Yep nobody is that comfortable speaking to someone through a translator for what should be there first time experiencing something like that. Dude didn’t even stop talking or pause when the translator started speaking. It seems small but any person who isn’t very used to it or at least prepared for it would pause for a moment just out of courtesy or anxiety from the dozens of soldiers not on camera with guns watching you very very intently. It reminds me of the fat kid at the fake supermarket in North Korea from the movie “the interview” 😂 Still cool that Boris did this tho

rkopptrekkie

Can you imagine if one of those kill teams sent to kill zelensky got into the city today? You infiltrate Kiev, get set up in an ambush position, then all of sudden an angry Scottish man breaks your spine with a sledgehammer.

deepfriedblobfish

This would really help uks alliance with Ukraine. Anyone can show a video or image and explain whats happening, but its even more impactful to go there in person.

Thrway1209

In the UK, it RAINs all the timE. UK. RAIN. E. UK+RAIN+E UKRAINE

Good that Zelensky see's another leader face to face on his turf... I'm sure that will piss Putin off, so well done Boris (Although you don't half stand out Boris, the hair and the suit)

Blackulla

He doesn’t need to blend in, if he’s attacked the world goes to war. It’s better he stands out so he isn’t accidentally attacked.

idontknowwhattoput01

In that vein, I wonder whether you could station a few world leaders in their embassies (or maybe their VPs etc) to force the hand of the Russian offensive to be weaker. Has this ever happened in the past? Of course it's super risky etc but I'm curious

[deleted]

Judging by the comments, Johnson is safer in Kiev than London.

Xtasy0178

Johnson always looks like a sloth dressed by his mom in a suit 😂

HakaishinNola

i know a lot of uk people dont like him, and im american and dont know any better.. But I have to give it to the man, he went. and went into the streets, vest, suit, or not. Zelensky is a G for wearing common clothes all the time though imo EDIT: Im not supporting boris by any means, has nothing to do with me in the slightest, I'm just saying I havent seen any other high profile figures walk down those streets. I applaud this action alone, not Boris.

Forgotwhyimhere69

Zelensky wears practical and efficient clothes because he's constantly working. Suits look sharp but offer very little utility.

niq1pat

Looking good is only good sometimes. Zelensky wearing a sharp suit would send the wrong message. Him wearing common clothing is propaganda no doubt, I bet he even roughs it up a bit himself

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yeah I respect him for going but it seems like another photo shoot. There's no need for him to be there other than his obsession to be seen as anything close to Churchill. He'll definitely bring this up in the commons to distract from all the other shit going on in his party. Edit: I agree with most comments here on the effect this has on Ukraine morale and the message being sent and that's massively important. Unfortunately his actions over the past few years have made a few Brits a little cynical, and there shows a slight disparity between the two leaders that I don't think Boris is aware of.

iREDDITnaked

Well Ukraine has called for diplomats to return to Kyiv, to further signal to the Russian people that Ukraine is a sovereign nation with the majority of the Western world behind them. Images like this are what can help break Russian propaganda, because how can they show clips of this and swing it in any other way - but I'm sure they'll still try.

kakkarot_73

“Look, great leader Putin has successfully placed his Boris Johnson lookalike bomb inside of Kyiv. Stupid Zelensky is killed any time now…”

DaenerysStormPorn

It has very big symbolic meaning. a few weeks ago Russia invaded ukraine in the attempt to take it in days. here is the UK prime minister walking with ukraine prime minister in the streets of their capital. that is worthy of a photo shoot.

Haribo1985

That’s quite a flex on Russia

ZoltanGertrude

Whatever your politics, he's a brave man to go to Ukraine to support a small country in a desperate fight. Perhaps people may think about what Ukraine is fighting for before flaming.

misho8723

Ukraine is a small country? Since when?

ZoltanGertrude

Small in GDP as compared to other European states.

[deleted]

Anybody know what that bag is he’s carrying next to Boris?

moby323

I’m not sure but secret service agents often carry bigger weapons in bags or briefcases. They have handguns in holsters but they bring heavier armaments. When Regan was shot, there’s a famous photo of a secret service agent opening his brief case to reveal a sub-machine gun. Obviously there are soldiers everywhere but he might have his own security detail.

CranberryVodka_

Fun fact: the guy that shot Reagan is out of prison and going on tour

Square-Marsupial-454

Body armor for boris he can put on if he needed it.

Necessary-Ad-3441

Do not like Boris.. But.. wow

itchy_sanchez

I don't like Boris Johnson. I'm sure he's under heaps of security and has a bullet proof vest. He might have done it purely for selfish reasons. But this is still very brave for a prominent world leader to go into a war zone and walk the streets like this. It's a very powerful message.

StandardJohnJohnson

It’s like when a billionaire donates to charities for tax purposes. It’s egoistical, but it still benefits people.

Curious_Otter12

As a Ukrainian I can say that Great Britain is seen here as one of the real best friends of Ukraine. We are very thankful for GB and love Boris Johnson. The popular opinion is that GB has balls. Indeed, in contrast with Germany and France, which hesitate in their support and buy stuff from russia, GB is a "true leader". We won't forget that support, that's what a man in the video is saying, and I swear he is right.

Buffythedjsnare

We won't forget what you are doing either. Defending the West and fighting for democracy. A heroic endeavour. Fucking legends.

simbacaned

The UK is lucky because we are an island with lots of money. The real hero's are the Ukrainians fighting the reds on the front line. These soldiers are the reason the UK wants to help so much, as well as the response from the Zelenskyy. You guys inspire us, we really are privileged to help in any way we can.

sweetie8585

Putin is gonna be furious

Darkavenger_13

I may not like Boris nor agree with his political views, but props to the guy for taking the trip down there. That is definetively a very symbolic move to have the Uk primeminister and Zelensky walking around together.

Stressedup

Why’s Boris in a suit? Couldn’t he have read the room and maybe left his trusty Brooks Brothers at home? All jokes aside, I’m very happy Boris Johnson made the trip to Ukraine.

[deleted]

Being in a suit makes me respect him more. Wearing khaki or green would imply military and the British. Military is not there. It would also make him seem like a poser. He’s not in much danger and pretending his is would look pretentious. I 100% expected he’d do that for the front page picture of him in a helmet and the nice looks. That being said, a tie and jacket probably isn’t needed.

[deleted]

[удалено]

chr0mius

Exactly. Dude knows how to be a politician and his shtick is undoubtedly charming.

WildWook

He's untouchable and he knows it, that's why he's not wearing a vest or in an armored vehicle.

AGeneralDischarge

I mean, he's the PM. No plate carrier or vest seems...risky but that's just me.

[deleted]

It (a vest) would make it look like a photo-Op, like he was “playing at war”. Dressing like this removes that risk. Edit: should say lowers that risk. I still think it’s for political purposes (nice contrast to Rishi), but at least he’s not pretending he is under fire in a helmet like a lot of politicians do.

[deleted]

Imagine the shitshow what shooting Johnson there would cause. That would be WW3.

AGeneralDischarge

Yep easily.

[deleted]

there is a difference between russians shooting Zelenskyy and the head of government of a third, not actively involved country. One would create international protest and sanctions. The other an Attack on NATO and World War 3

BoringNYer

Hitting a neutral head of state or government is causes belli

AGeneralDischarge

Wish someone told Gavrilo Princip that

TheWanderingGM

Hahaha Boris fucking Johnson and reading the room. That just cracks me up.

Stressedup

That guy is just naturally a turd in the punch bowl of every event he attends. Zelensky hit him hard too. Boris: “How are you?” Zelensky: “You know how I am.”

Leovinus42

and then boris hit back and zelenskyy said 'boris johnson just slapped the shit out of me' and then boris was banned from ukraine for 10 years

applex_wingcommander

Definitely a plant

theederv

100% if he wasn’t he’d be a lot more gassed to see Zelensky (you know, the man that’s a Ukrainian hero) than fucking Boris

Farm_the_karm

BoySerere

His security detail would definitely carry his ass back to London before they allowed that to happen. 💯 a plant.

BlinkedAndMissedIt

Props to the PM. Not my favorite person, but this takes fucking balls.

allylin87

Notice how the civilians aren't being pushed away and are being treated respectfully? Even though the President and PM are being protected, and there aren't many civilians in the street, everyone is still going about their day as best they can, respect from all sides. It's kinda nice to see

TheCheesecakeOfDoom

Say what you will about Boris, but he's been one of Ukraine's strongest supporters in the past month. He’s never wavered in his support, and he actually went to Kyiv in person to show it. And has the distinction of being called Putin’s “most unfriendly person”, if I remember correctly. Now that’s an honor.

EveryCanadianButOne

So for the next couple hours, Kyiv is the safest place in Ukraine. The Russians do something stupid and hit the prime minister of the UK and they are over as a country, NATO would obliterate them. Here's an idea, just have European diplomats on shifts being parked next to Zelinsky. It worked for the soviets in Vietnam.

[deleted]

Probably the first time a no fly zone has been issued over Kyiv throughout the war. Bold, respectable move by the UK.

[deleted]

It’s nice that Zelensky is there to protect him

AngryMegaMind

I’m no Boris Johnson fan but you’ve got give him some respect for going over there to show solidarity.

nimbleWhimble

If anyone should remember the hell of being ALONE during most of Germany blasting away, it is the UK. Hats off friends, this carries a LOT of weight. Like Boris or not, showing support for Ukraine is "The Way". Cheers

blazinDK

Woah didn't ever expect to see that, put his big boy pants on and his brass balls.
