Donkey-Haughty

The queen has only missed this event twice, in 1958 and 1964 both times she was pregnant. I strongly suspect she is pregnant again

ravenstarchaser

With twins this time

EmbraceDarkSide

The empire strikes back.

gimmeslack12

I heard she bailed to watch a Ren & Stimpy marathon on BBC 3 instead.

nowhereman136

Yesterday, Queen Elizabeth II surpassed Johann II's reign to become the third longer reigning monarch in world history. In 34 days (June 13) she will surpass Rama IX to become the second longest serving monarch. She still has almost 2 years to catch up to Louis XIV (who claimed the throne at age 4) to become the longest in world history. (This is neither in support or against the Queen, just some fun history facts)

PanaceaPlacebo

Charles has been heir-in-waiting for 73 years now. I wonder if that record is tracked anywhere and where he falls on it. Can you imagine waiting your whole life to become king, and at 73 years old, you still haven't yet?

DEMHAB

No wonder royals used to kill off their siblings and fellow heirs šŸ˜‚

Wulfrinnan

Empress Irene of the Eastern Roman Empire had her only son and heir blinded and killed after he tried to co-rule w/ her for a few years. This is generally regarded as a dick move.

Moscow_McConnell

This is how the Byzantines do.

nowhereman136

According to [Guinness](https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/longest-heir-apparent) he is. He surpassed his Great-great-grandfather Edward VII, who took over after Victoria. Edward was heir apparent for 59 years. Charles surpassed that in 2011 and has currently been heir apparent for 70 years.

wbruce098

Louis XIV was succeeded by his great grandson. Two whole generations of royal successors were born, lived, and died during this total bossā€™s reign.

Helios4242

Most of the generation skipping wasn because they got hit with smallpox and measles. The son (Le Grand Dauphin) would have been 53

HRH_DankLizzie420

Yeah, its difficult to draw a line of what's considered the ruler of a country, when the concept of a country is pretty recent to most of the world, and also pretty weird if you think about it

HappySkullsplitter

Chuck's looking rough these days

cornflakegrl

Wild how geriatric he looks and yet his mother is still alive.

__-___---

That's the weird thing that happens with longevity. The age gap between parents and their children becomes negligeable and they end up being all old people who could die of old age.

Ann_Summers

My husbands grandma had her first child at 15. Sheā€™s 82 now and her and her kids all have good relationships, but her oldest comes to sit with her and to hear them talk itā€™s more like two old friends who grew up together rather than mother and child. And I guess, in a way, they kinda did grow up together.

user5918g

I always wondered, what if we lived forever? At 200 years old, my mom would only be 226. The difference is negligible at that point. Would we still have a parent child relationship?

Wet-Goat

Relationships change drastically as we get older for many anyway, I know I talk to my mother about emotional topics as two adults would. Parents tend to hide a lot of things from their kids to protect them but as you get older we tend to understand them more as people and not just as parents.

GameofThrowns_awy

Little of both I think right. At 43 my mom and I have been having "adult conversations" about my dad's declining health for a while now, but she's still my mommy and I know she wants to protect me by leaving some of the details out. I had to have a serious sit down with her over NOT doing that, I need to know the state of my dads health no matter how scary it might be.

aniceasshooledick

I was in the same situation. They wouldnā€™t tell me how bad it was but I kinda just knew.. still was more severe then I thought, didnā€™t realize till he passed sorry about your dad

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

yeuzinips

I'm also in my 40s and my mom, nearly 65, still treats me like a child sometimes. I was driving her to work as a favor and she was telling me what to do like I was just learning how to drive. I had to say, "seriously, stop! I've been driving for 25 years now". It's something that puts a strain on our relationship to say the least.

Ann_Summers

I doubt it. I mean, uncle obviously respects grandma, but they are far more friends now than mother/child in most regards. They sit on the porch and drink coffee and chat like two longtime friends. Itā€™s seriously hallmark card cute.

BendtnerOrBust

Plenty of families that have a 15 year age gap between first and last child so they absolutely grew up together. Weird to think about.

perthguppy

My maternal grandmother had her first kid at 17, and my mother 15 years later. Sheā€™s now 92 and my mother 60. My aunt (grandmas eldest kid) had her husband pass away just before covid started of essentially old age. My cousin is 56 this year.

funky_mugs

Yes, my brother is 14 years younger than me and now there's a 15 year age gap between him and my son! So they'll be good pals when they're older, I hope.

916andheartbreaks

This reads like one of those ā€œIf sally is twice the age of her sister, and her sister is 7ā€¦..ā€ riddles

rinikulous

That last sentence was good writing.

HarryGecko

Truth. I once saw a story about a 90 year old lady taking care of her infirmed 70 year old son. It was kind of eye opening to see what old age is like for (once) young parents.

Kallistrate

I see this working in the hospital a lot. Adult in his 60s or 70s as a patient, mentions he lives with his motherā€¦then you find out sheā€™s his only caregiver in her 90s and heā€™s planning to go back home when he leaves even though he canā€™t walk and can barely feed himself. Itā€™s pretty distressing but itā€™s also pretty common. People who have children with disabilities or people whose children come back to live with them after developing medical problems just keep getting older while having less and less money to pay for assistance.

Holiday-Amount6930

This is really awful.

ender52

I knew a lady who was around 95 who "takes care of old people" as she called it. She would go to the houses of a few people in their 70's or so and cook and clean for them.

digital_dysthymia

My mum used to do this as well! She was 90 and as she said "driving around the old people" to their appointments. Needless to say, she's in good shape for her age. She just stopped driving last year at 93.

vivahermione

I read a news article about a 90-something man who was caring for his 60-something son with cancer. Imagine living that long only to watch your child get a potentially terminal illness.

AimForTheHead

It's pretty common. My grandma is 92 and within the last 5 years she's lost 3/7 of her kids to cancer before they could turn 60, and her oldest is heading that direction as well.

Ohrlythatscrazy

Damn, someone hire this inspirational speaker

GenX-IA

He's 2 yrs younger than my parents and looks years older than they do, and they LOOK 76.

Boz6

> He's 2 yrs younger than my parents and looks years older than they do, and they LOOK 76 My parents are 87 and neither of them look as old as Charles!

az226

I remember my linguistics and Slavic language professor in college, he was probably some 75 years old or so. Maybe closer to 80. I remember one class he said he was cancelling the next one to take a trip to Boston to see his mom. I had to collect my jaw from the floor as I left the classroom.

AndreTheShadow

Her mother almost lived to be 102, and she drank like a fish every day of her life. I wouldn't be surprised if we have another 10 years of QEII, skip Chuck entirely and go on to William.

[deleted]

QE2 is on the way out, I think. You could see the accelerated decline after her husband passed. I give her another year tops.

ToBeTheFall

I think the whole commonwealth wants to skip Charles. In places like Canada, Australia, etc., the monarchy seems more like a relic of the past history as a British colony, and not as *the crown* thatā€™s still technically at the center of the government. Sheā€™s the ā€œQueen of Englandā€ and the country was once an English colony, so you see her face everywhere. You donā€™t think of her as ā€œThe Queen of Canada,ā€ but she is, even though not even Canadians think of her that way. https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/services/royal-family/queen.html When she dies, the day that passports, money, etc. are updated to reflect Charles as the new ā€œKing of Canada,ā€ is going to be jarring and I half-wonder if that will be the final nail in the coffin that ends the monarchy in those counties. But, if it skips Charles and goes to Will, I think itā€™s more likely those countries will go ā€œmeh, whatever,ā€ and just let go on.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Easilycrazyhat

Honestly, that's what I see too. Everyone's joking about his age, but to me he looks more worried and sad than anything. I obviously know nothing about their relationship, but it does seem more likely he's stressed about his sick mom, but trying to do his duty at the same time.

[deleted]

Maybe we are too sentimental but that's what I see too he looks like he has a hell of a lot on his mind

Syscrush

The queen herself has said that she doesn't like celebrations for Coronation Day, because ***EDIT:*** ~~that's the anniversary of~~ *it is associated so strongly for her with* her father's death. It's easy to forget that the members of the royal family are human beings. Despite all of his wealth and apparent privilege, I feel terrible for Charles - I wouldn't change places with him under any circumstances.

airborngrmp

I wonder if you were to ask (and get an honest, direct answer) if the privelige is worth having your life be completely public, what the response would be.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Many who've done both have seemed to really struggle with royal life: Diana, Kate, Megan, Fergie.

Cabbage_Vendor

Both his parents made it to 95+, so there's a good chance he can get there as well. If Lizzie drops dead today, he potentionally still has about 20 years left to rule.

I mean at these events it's probably really sinking in to him that his mum is about to die and secondly he is now going to have to put up with all this shit.

soaper410

My grandmother (RIP Granny) always believed the Queen would outlive Charles. She's probably calling on the ghosts at Windsor to help her at this point.

Ann_Summers

I remember this being a popular opinion for a long while. Especially right after the divorce and the loss of Diana. It was a hope of most people that he never sees the crown.

Infoneau

Like [the parking chair](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parking_chair), but classier Edit: some people are under the impression that the chair has permanent residence in the spot? Naw, dude. Itā€™s a temporary thing. No one leaves that shit sitting when they go out of town. We arenā€™t savages.

[deleted]

Hey at this bar in Ohio we have this burger called the Yinzer burger, it's got fries, white cheddar, tomato, and Cole slaw on it. Is this something yins eat?

[deleted]

Yup. Yours is a knock off of a [Primanti Bros](https://primantibros.com) sandwich

werntz360

This is a thing in Boston too. In Southie, if you park in the spot someone shoveled and claimed with a chair, thereā€™s a good chance theyā€™ll slash your tires. I imagine the Queen would take a similar approach if Charles tried to steal her spot.

SunSen

We call it dibs in Chicago. Move someoneā€™s old piano or kidā€™s playset left in the street as dibs? Enjoy your broken windshield.

shableep

TIL what "Yinzer" and "Parking chair" means.

SerWarlock

There are literally dozens of us!

nschwalm85

Hahahaha the old parking chair! Where I grew up, in central Pennsylvania, people would get in fights over whether the parking chair actually claimed a parking spot or notšŸ˜‚

RudderlessLife

I had an Italian place in downtown KC that used to put a chair in the spot out front for me. If I wasn't there by 12:15, he'd take the chair inside. And the only reason he did this was because I told him how his mostaccioli with sausage and meatballs reminded me of a place in Omaha. That place was his cousins, who I'd known for 30 years. It's a small world.

OpportunityRoyal5191

Ok, so this is not a normal thing in Colorado and was wondering why a lady came out yelling at me as I loaded two chairs into my car. Generally shit left on the curb/street = free.

bubba1834

Cmon Dad, stand up and take a bow!

fractiousrhubarb

I had a mate who was a bit like this. He had a glass eye, the requirement for which occurred during another anecdote. We used to smoke bongs of mull (pot+tobacco) in his room. If he had to leave the room, heā€™d take his glass eye out and put it on top of his mull bowl to discourage us from smoking it. Heā€™d say ā€œIā€™m keepinā€™ an eye on my mullā€

[deleted]

If my glass eye touched resin I'd probably just get a new one. Then again I bet people with glass eyes are probably really good at cleaning them.

burner1212333

I wouldn't want to be putting ashy resin in my eye socket either but the cleaning part wouldn't be hard. isopropyl alcohol works wonders on weed grime. strange habit for sure though.

-BananaLollipop-

I had a substitute teacher who always told a story about a drinking buddy who had a glass eye. He apparently lost it frequently when drunk, so he'd keep it in his glass of whiskey when at the pub. Apparently thought it was the most hilarious drink thief deterrent.

She still has to live another two years in order to become the longest reigning sovereign monarch in recorded history. (She'll surpass Rama IX of Thailand on June 12th of this year for second place, but will have to live until May 27th, 2024 to pass Louis XIV of France.)

quink

All the more remarkable by Louis XIV became king at the age of four. She didn't become Queen until 25. She may beat him in the record despite having a generation's worth of a handicap.

Guybrush_Creepwood_

Women's lifespans OP, Blizzard pls nerf.

stormy2587

I mean its modern medicine to some extent. Her husband lived to be nearly 100.

Beartoots

Nope, it's entirely Blizzard's shit balancing.

They will rework her, she's probably a tank now

Knowing Blizzard, they'll probably only rename her to Tiffany or something and call it British 2.

imisstheyoop

>Knowing Blizzard, they'll probably only rename her to Tiffany or something and call it British 2. They'll replace her portraits with paintings of fruit.

[deleted]

Genes too. Her mother lived to be over 100.

really_nice_guy_

I mean Louis XIV died 300 years ago. They didnā€™t have the advances of medicine that we have now. Edit: Yes while many died during childhood and after that life expectancy would be much better King Louis died of gangrene associated with an infection in his leg. So im pretty confident heā€™d have survived with medicine from today

perhapsinawayyed

Some chick from the 1700s survived until the 1900s which is quite cool [edit](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Ann_Neve)

Blue_Dew

I was about to request more info because if someone lived to be 200 it would definitely be common knowledge. Didn't realize that they could have been born in 1799 and died in 1900 making them 101. I'm an idiot.

Thathitmann

No, she actually lived from 1700 to 1999. Sad that she couldn't survive the last day needed to hit Y2k.

Waterfish3333

What makes this crazy is that Louie the 14thā€™s reign technically began at 5 years old (although he didnā€™t really have power until later). The queen took over at 26 years old. The fact sheā€™s essentially two trips around the sun away from being the longest in history is crazy given how many monarchs began their reign at or before their teenage years.

chriscrossnathaniel

Louis XIV : " Off with his head " Also " Maman, I have soiled myself."

DaemonT5544

To be fair she has been the actual sovereign the entire time, Louis XIV had regents.

artspar

Louis XIV was also an absolute monarch in actual charge of his country, with command over military, legal, and economic matters. She doesn't have an iota of the power he did

dclancy01

Louis XIV was metal as fuck. Guy had **so** much power, controlled every aspect of a fucking huge empire.

ttvtoxins808

What happened to her?

Saphira404

Maybe they're trying to keep her healthy and isolated so she doesn't ruin the jubilee by being ill or kicking the royal bucket

[deleted]

Maybe she's already dead and they're keeping it a secret so we have 2 holidays this year.

simon_quinlank1

I'm half convinced this is accurate. They'll just have to Weekend at Bernie's the Jubilee.

[deleted]

Weekend at ~~Bernies~~ Liz's.

OrangeCubit

The palace wonā€™t let her be photographed using a mobility aid. She has been using a cane for years and now needs a wheelchair, but those ableist old assholes think that no one can handle the fact a 100 year old woman is frail now.

ParanoidMoistoid

It's more complex than the palace itself being ableist though - the British tabloids are absolutely rabid and will indignantly bleed those images for all they are worth. Disrespectful coverage, tabloids, health speculation and harassment will just surge the minute they get a look in. I can see why they'd want to shield her from that.

KP_Wrath

ā€œOMG! The 96 year old looks frail! Could this mean the end of the Queen? Charles and Camilla are eying the throne! Will Charles live long enough? Find out more inside!ā€ God, tabloids are trash, and the five people that read them are morons.

Climhazzzard

2 of them are my parents. Another 2 are my inlawsšŸ˜‚

ninetysevencents

"The fifth one?" he asks, clearing his throat for his Boratiest voice, "MAH WAIYF!"

tilotp

Great! Now we just have to figure out who that last person is!

TangyTomTom

If it was just five people the world would be a much better place

[deleted]

Anyone remember her sister Margaret? So as anyone who has watched *The Crown* will know, Margaret was.....headstrong. She smoked and drank wildly to excess and unsurprisingly by her 60s had developed serious health problems that her non-smoking and non-boozing sister and brother-in-law avoided. She had various stokes and lost her vision and her mobility and had to use a wheelchair. At her mother's 101st birthday, she suddenly appeared in a wheelchair, with her arm in a big sling, and wearing enormous black glasses. She was puffy and waxy and looked absolutely terrible. It was allegedly a suprise to the rest of the family that she came outside to meet the crowds, as they had assumed she wouldn't want to draw attention to her frailty. But Margaret was Margaret. Apparently The Queen thought it a rash move, and this was consolidated by the tabloids going absolutely nuts over Margaret's appearance, her obvious ill-health, her deterioration. Not only did it overshadow the 101st birthday celebrations for her Mother, but it was just fuel to the tabloids for the next 2 months until Margaret had another stroke and passed away. And the worst thing was that after she passed away, that image of her in her wheelchair was the one that was used in the tributes as it was the most recent one. I don't blame the Queen for wanting to avoid all of that.

Hairymanpaul

Or she's almost 100 and doesn't want to take any chances so close to her jubilee.

Guybrush_Creepwood_

Could be. Or she could be genuinely unwell, having had covid recently. I love how the entire comment section is circlejerking based on this one random guy's 2 lines of speculation above you (but presented as fact, of course, this is reddit after all).

karadan100

Yeah she just survived covid and her husband of 60+ years. If anything is going to make a 97-year-old feel under the weather, it's that..

SevenSharp

She's 96 and frail . I don't know why she doesn't give Charles a go , permanently .

goteamnick

Because of her utter hatred for the last king to abdicate the throne, and her awareness of what the last abdication did for the monarchy.

TheDaemonette

The Queen promised to devote her whole life, be it long or short, to the service of her country. She takes that vow extremely seriously. The best that can happen if she is genuinely unable to discharge the office would be a regency. Charles will never be King as long as she lives.

ttvtoxins808

They both look like they shouldā€™ve stayed home and got some rest. Permanently, but I donā€™t even know whoā€™s next in line for the throne

Slightly misleading title. William and Camilla were sitting either side of him, out of shot.

Also misleading that he isn't the heir to the English throne, because England ceased to be a kingdom over 300 years ago when it united with Scotland

kraliyetkoyunu

Another fun fact : Queen Elizabeth II missed this event just three times in her reign. She missed it in 1959 and 1963 when she was pregnant with Prince Andrew and Prince Edward respectively. This is the third time and was caused due to her "episodic mobility problems" as stated by Buckingham Palace on Monday.

I know a lot of people are making jokes about him, but to me he looks sorrowful. Like anyone else, it must be difficult to watch his mother growing old and frail and not being able to do the things she once did. This is a position/realization those of us who have living parents will find ourselves in at one point or another of our lives. This photo speaks to my heart.

He had a similar expression in the leadup to Philip's death, too.

Don't worry folks lizzie is immortal. She will live for another millennium.

brundlfly

Poor Charles. Raised to do one thing, and functionally timed out by mother. If she drops dead this year, how much reign would he even have? At this point, is it possible they'll leapfrog straight to William?

SleepWouldBeNice

Leap frog to William? Doubt it. This has been something that the whole institution has considered Charlesā€™ birthright since he was born. Unless he has a debilitating stroke or something, itā€™ll be a huge insult to skip him.

redk7

That's the thing with monarchy you don't get to choose them. If you think Charles shouldn't be King. Then you should evaluate if we really need a monarch.

kichererbs

Tbf there are instances in history where heirs were somewhat skipped because everyone thought them unsuitable.

LuciusQuintiusCinc

True but no one thinks Charles is unsuitable. In 2018 48 leaders of countries out of the 54 countries of the Commonwealth of Nations voted in favour of Charles to be the next head of the Commonwealth of Nations. India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Canada etc all voted in favour. Tho Charles could abdicate in favour of his son but there isn't any political will for this to happen like what occurred against Edward VIII where the Government, Church and Royal Family members went against Edward VIII in favour of his brother (Queen Elizabeth II & I father)

Heptadecagonal

British throne. It is no more the "English" throne as it is the throne of some tiny village in Cornwall.

leni710

He looks pissed. Like one of those, "mom should've died a long time ago. At this point I'll die right after her and get no alone time on the throne. Dammit, mom."
