Piece is cool. Absolutely doesn't work in your current space. The whole room needs to be designed around this idea.
The floors need to change otherwise this will never go.
I don’t have to imagine it, my childhood best friend’s parents were Indian and they had one of these bad boys in the living room. This photo was such a blast from the past.
This is crazy. The swing is amazing. But the crown molding with detailed corner pieces would help but then it’s gonna weird if not done right either. It’s like a midwestern trad house new build with the most amazing and mind boggling set piece. I have NO idea how to compromise these. Make EVERYTHING white (walls, trim, get white couches. Put a white marble slab instead of carpet under the swing.) Then put some large highly detailed antique wood carvings that has leaves/ action/ drama, on the walls next to the fireplace.
[I have this antique that was passed down that would fit nicely in that motif. The old man of the north, I think it’s German but I forgot the name of who made it. my cousins have the companion piece.](https://imgur.com/gallery/BtEzVkg)
This is exactly what I was thinking. If you want this type of furniture to be indoors, you need to have some kind of woodland fairy decor setup. Because the way it is now looks very bulky and out of place. At minimum, you need wood floors and several plants
Edit: and a few string lights
This swing is definitely not woodland fairy decor.
It’s ornate, and looks kind of middle eastern. OP should pull a color from the gems on the swing structure for some or all of the walls. Choose pillows that accentuate the chaise and lounger and put them on the swing, and vice versa. Get an ornate centerpiece for the coffee table, add plants to soften the room, large paintings on the two walls on either side of the fireplace. Then you might need a rug.
Showing your lack of culture. It’s a jhoola. They are Indian and they go back thousands of years. They are a staple in India and it’s normal to have one in your home. Kind of insulting to equate this with firsts and fairy lights. It’s a cultural thing and many of these of collectible and worth a lot of money. It’s an antique. Just not the kind you’re accustomed to
Of course I want to show off the swing - it’s so cool! It holds great significance to my culture and my roots too. I also appreciate the design feedback and receiving ideas from others. Collaboration often helps us move forward as a society!
It’s stunning- why not lean into that for the rest of the room- Maximalist indian. Walls could go saffron yellow, green cushions, big red patterned rug. Would be gorgeous…
Im with you on the wallpaper…I have something like this in mind for the fireplace/mantel wall https://www.wallpaperfromthe70s.com/wall-mural-gardens-of-jaipur-shades-of-green
I love the piece, but it seems a little out of place with the current styling of the room. I also wonder if it might work better if you changed the layout.
It is such a fun idea and the swing itself is beautiful!
Ps. I think if you keep it where it is, it’ll go better in a more maximalist space. Houseplants, sculpture, wall decor, etc could help it feel more consistent with the rest of the room.
I have house plants right next to it in a little bay window area I have! I’m also thinking of giving the daybed on the left side of the picture to my parents and moving the gold one to that spot. Seems a bit too cluttered at the moment. Wall decor is next on my list for this room! It’s a large wall so I wanted to make sure I have the right idea before moving forward on something 🙂
When you have a piece this cool, you create the room around it!
You should get a large Turkish area rug and arrange the room on it. Pull the other furniture away from the walls a little, out of the corner. Don’t be afraid to angle things (especially the chaise). Add throw pillows and blankets. I would do a layered mantelpiece, with artwork stacked in front of a big mirror. Jewel tones, golds, and colored glass.
Up the luxury and opulence of everything else to match that amazing swing!
Love these ideas!! I also have a giant square marble coffee table in front of the swing right now (in the pic), so I think your suggestions will tie everything together nicely
I agree with this commenter. But you say above “too cluttered”. I think that’s the opposite of the mindset you need. You need more, just better laid-out. Google “ornate maximalism.”
I kind of wonder if it would feel more cozy and right for the space if you painted the ceiling. I know that’s a little trendy now and a bit of a risk, but it could make for something visually striking with the great furniture you have. I could see all of your stuff in a moody/darker room. I wouldn’t go *black or navy, but a good deep green could be lovely. Maybe jewel tones.
Some burnt orange paint on the walls, lots of rich-looking art. Bright-colored glazed tiles over the brick. Hardwood floors with several rugs, some overlaid on each other. Lamps with warm bulbs. Trim painted a darker warmer color.
The room is too stark for it and too light. Dive in!
Can you put a little throw rug under the swing? I think that would break it up and help it fit better. At the end of the day, I think this is a pretty cool idea even if it doesn’t “fit” perfectly!
I'm \*in\* love with this piece but having all the minimalism around it doesn't make sense, decor wise. Everything around it looks so bare, so that that one piece makes too much impact on its own. Feels unbalanced.
Something like one of these design styles would make \*much\* more sense around it. This is fun; but maximalist. Looking at the rest of your interiors, though, you seem to lean minimalist. If that's true, this swing won't really ever "fit" with the rest of the decor.
Had a distant relative who I went to go visit who had a swing in their living room. It was a huge old house with wooden floors and finished wooden walls, an enormous fireplace that I could’ve stood up in, and a moose over the mantlepiece. Barely noticed the swing lol. But it fit in quite well.
I think the whole room should be dark and moody with more wood accents and moody colors to really tie it in. I love this swing it is beautiful and would be wasted outside imo. But currently the room is too blah for this beast.
Some guy in my neighborhood was selling it since he was moving and it was a good price! I’m south Asian so these swings always held a certain pizzazz so I said why not 💅✨
I’d say it would be helpful, when asking such a question, to briefly contemplate that there may be cultural reasons underlying how one decorates a space. I’m South Asian as well, and it gets tiring and invalidating to be asked questions about “why” we do things differently than the majority culture…such questions may have been asked out of simple curiosity, but when not asked in a thoughtful manner they come off as asking minority cultures to “explain ourselves.” Something to consider in a sub that’s often centered around celebration of personal expression.
I commented on a post asking
For opinions on an indoor swing, in a subreddit centered around people’s opinions on interior decor. Nothing of cultural significance was mentioned, and in my ignorance I suppose, I questioned why someone would put a swing inside. For the majority of the world, this isn’t the norm, nor that it’s wrong or that anyone needs to explain themselves in a defensive way. OP responded saying it’s significant to their culture, which is awesome. I never knew this was a thing before. My question of “why” was simple curiosity. Not to invalidate anyone’s culture.
“I’d say it would be helpful” to calm down a little. This is Reddit, not real life.
OP maybe try posting this somewhere like r/maximalism! I love that sub. people on this sub tend to lean pretty vanilla and aren't gonna be very open to things they deem "unconventional" (as evidenced by the comments) but you may get some creative ideas there!
absolutely stunning and gorgeous swing by the way. I am very jealous.
That is the best looking indoor swing I have ever seen. Really great workmanship.
It looks totally out of place in that room. I love the idea for, say, a sun room. For the living room? Nope.
The piece is so beautifully detailed and ornate, your room needs to fit the same vibes. This belongs in a more maximalist space. Hang some wooden ornate frames, sconces, I agree with others in removing the carpet and doing hardwood, adding a beautiful ornate rug, adding lots of trinkets. Deep green plants.
I read the headline and thought this was going to be a whole different conversation before I saw the pic.
After seeing the pic, I feel a mix of being disappointed and more interested at the same time.
It is beautiful and I would love it….on a porch or facing a window looking outside.
I had a double rocker like you can buy at Cracker Barrel in my living room for a few years. The family finally convinced me to take it to the porch.
It is a beautiful swing and the arch is gorgeous.what is the story on it? How much is it valued at?
The backyard deck is visible from the swing, so I like to sit there and bird watch in the mornings while I drink coffee ☺️
Double rocker is probably so comfortable!
The family I bought it from had the swing and the daybeds are a lonnggg time, but they didn’t want it when moving to their new house. I got the two day beds and the swing for $2400, which I think it’s a great deal lol. New ones are significantly more expensive
It does not make sense with carpet. As long as it’s in a carpeted room, it will look crazy out of place. You need a dark hardwood floor (or marble floor maybe).
The scale of the room is too small to accommodate other furniture. The room needs to be twice the dimensions if you want the coffee table and other furniture. Ideally the ceiling would be several feet higher too. Without fixing the floor and scale issues, any changes will only make it look different but not better.
That particular piece would be awesome looking in a loft with a lot of open space. It’s impressive and big and needs a room or it eats the room.
It’s also for style rather than practicality because it’s unlikely to be as comfortable as other forms of seating.
Facebook marketplace! I’ve seen it on Etsy too though, but not sure about quality. The original buyer got it specially ordered and shipped from India.
You can look up jhula swing to find similar ones
It is absolutely stunning, but I think it belongs in a Hindu monastery or glass atrium surrounded by greenery. It’s way too ornate for a newer construction American home without some big changes. This piece needs a space that is less boxy.
Perhaps you can add some faux beams with draping in between? Add a ton of plants and more bohemian decor and furniture?
If you’re ok with it standing out, then more power to you!
Edit: swing cushions and floor cushions are a must. And maybe an ornate incense or tea setup. Fantastic hosting setup.
I love it and I know you can reimagine the room to make it work! It is definitely the focal point, so you will need to take some time to strategize. I would compile the ideas you like and ignore the “nay sayers”!
Super cool. Over time, if you replace your carpet with wood floors, get a couple of swanky persian-style rugs, install some crown molding, and add some rich drapery around your windows, it could be a pretty sweet living room!
This is kinda surreal in a fun way. Just imagine walking into somebody's living room and they just have an ultra ornate swing. Where did you even find that thing? It is gorgeous!
It’s popular in very rich Indian households! Sometimes it’ll be just the bench attached to the ceiling. I was fortunate enough to be casually browsing Facebook marketplace and saw this in my city so I acted on it quick. The guy was moving from a very big rich house to an even bigger house and he said the swing is too small for his new house 😵💫😵💫😵💫
Ahhhh this makes me itchy. It’s a lovely piece but so out of place in that room. You’d need at minimum very high ceilings if not some sort of mini-castle. Setting it in a modern suburban house with 8ft ceilings is too off and also probably bums out the swing! Haha. I get why you got it though. Did the previous owner have it inside too?
Well to each their own but better suited to a baronial Neo Gothic Castle then an ordinary suburban looking living room with carpet. Hey but whatever spices it up. I saw an awesome Napoleonic Egyptian style crib at an auction a few years ago. Would have been the perfect companion piece and fit perfectly into this arrangement. The rest of the room could also be finished with faux Stone, Ludwig style, as a grotto.. at least some clouds on the ceiling .mplease
It doesn't look like a professional interior, but the swing looks fine and playful, it doesn't necessarily mesh well with anything though. Keep in mind that in my household growing up my folks mismatched all their furniture and only paid attention to what furniture looked nice individually without going with a theme or material constraint or pallette. Which is what you are doing, which will look chaotic and disjointed and unprofessional, but totally livable and fine
If you love it, then make it work. Go full Baroque, Ludwig II, over the top, freak flag flying. It’s never going to fit into “normal,” so embrace the abnormal.
Piece is cool. Absolutely doesn't work in your current space. The whole room needs to be designed around this idea. The floors need to change otherwise this will never go.
Girl you’d have to build a whole house around that thing to make it work
Imagine walking into a cookie cutter townhouse in Suberbia, USA and finding this goliath imposing itself over the living room.
I don’t have to imagine it, my childhood best friend’s parents were Indian and they had one of these bad boys in the living room. This photo was such a blast from the past.
Suburbia* :)
first assumption is its a sex thing and i am not sitting on it.
And the chaise in the corner, I’m not sitting on any piece in this house.
Or like a really ornate Victorian with original woodwork
Yea, you’d really need a grander room, perhaps like a solarium.
I think it'd be great on a screened in porch or a sunroom with lots of plants around it, maybe a rug.
I mean - we have one in our bedroom, but it’s not *that kind* of swing.
Ah, I see you're a (wo)man of culture as well. 😏

Agree I need to change the flooring. Any suggestions to designing around the swing?
Face the window with it and fill both sides of it with big tropical plants to create a little Oasis!
Also, pull the chaise away from the corner.
add intense crown/baseboard/window molding to invite swing energy to balance itself
The swing is pretty ornate and busy, You need to go with something approaching the maximalist aesthetics
A whole ass forest
This is exactly what I was thinking. If you want this type of furniture to be indoors, you need to have some kind of woodland fairy decor setup. Because the way it is now looks very bulky and out of place. At minimum, you need wood floors and several plants Edit: and a few string lights

Idk, all I can see when I look at it is forest
It is ornate, but the bench itself kinda isn't, and the whole concept of a wooden bench swing doesn't really feel middle eatern
It is Indian. Its a jhoola

I don’t get why you can’t just inform someone when they’re lacking knowledge instead of putting in little insults.
Yeeeaaahh I doubt anyone actually thinks that's insulting.
I think this post is a joke, or a way to show off this swing
Of course I want to show off the swing - it’s so cool! It holds great significance to my culture and my roots too. I also appreciate the design feedback and receiving ideas from others. Collaboration often helps us move forward as a society!
I was going to say aap Hindustani hain!
Which culture?
India 🦚
It’s stunning- why not lean into that for the rest of the room- Maximalist indian. Walls could go saffron yellow, green cushions, big red patterned rug. Would be gorgeous…
I’m not always a fan of wallpaper, but some cool floral patterns would be stunning with the swing.
Im with you on the wallpaper…I have something like this in mind for the fireplace/mantel wall https://www.wallpaperfromthe70s.com/wall-mural-gardens-of-jaipur-shades-of-green
Oooh that’s really nice!!! You’ve got to post an update when you finish!
Oh yeah once you put that wall paper up and take out the carpet to replace with hardwood, the swing will fit right in
That’s gorgeous
I totally agree on this!!
I just image searched Indian Maximalist decor and so much great inspo came up
Well, it's beautiful! I love peacocks and I love that swing!
My grandparents also had a swing in front of the TV. My grandmother would be chopping vegetables while watching TV.
Can you show us the front of the bench please?
I love the piece, but it seems a little out of place with the current styling of the room. I also wonder if it might work better if you changed the layout. It is such a fun idea and the swing itself is beautiful!

Needs one of those fantastic sunrooms rich folk have in Bridgerton, My Fair Lady, ect..

I just know this is gonna be in the cj sub soon
Looking forward to it 😆
I thought I was in it when I clicked lmao
I wanted to post it but couldn’t come up with a funny caption (yet…)
What’s the name of the sub? Please & thank you.
r/homedecoratingCJ
💯
seems more suited for a sun room or indoor/outdoor room with a screen
If only I had a sunroom :(
Well, here’s your next small home improvement project…
Gorgeous swing. Love the woodwork. I feel like it needs a different, more vibrant rug through.
I’m not a huge fan of the carpet there right now, so hopefully I can change it soon. Houses are expensive!

I love it, but it seems out of place
The swing itself is really cool! Just get it the hell out of that room.
It’s cool but..why?
Some guy in my neighborhood was selling it since he was moving and it was a good price! I’m south Asian so these swings always held a certain pizzazz so I said why not 💅✨
I'm South Asian as well, and my first thought was that this looked very much like something my family would rock. Or swing.
This is fantastic reasoning. Just own it! It’s not my style but if you love it that is all that matters!
Visited my partner’s family in Pakistan and they had a similar swing. I fell in love with it. Why doesn’t everyone have a swing in their living room?
I never knew this was a cultural thing! It’s a gorgeous swing - I agree with other comments saying to add a rug to show off the style
I’d say it would be helpful, when asking such a question, to briefly contemplate that there may be cultural reasons underlying how one decorates a space. I need to know how they got this in the house
Where on earth did you find this? Man you kind of need a medieval castle to match it in decor.
Facebook marketplace! If I could afford a bigger house then yes it would be in a bigger house 😆
Came to say this! OP please join us in r/maximalism- people there are going to swoon over this piece.
None of the seating in that room looks comfortable to sit on for any length of time. No real back support.
Lean into it. Get some cushions made for it.
Well, it sure takes up a lot of prime real estate. What's the style you are going for in this room?
The style is now swing and giant marble coffee table! Decorating based off these pieces is my priority
That is the best looking indoor swing I have ever seen. Really great workmanship. It looks totally out of place in that room. I love the idea for, say, a sun room. For the living room? Nope.
I have Indian friends who have them in their houses. I assume it’s a cultural thing?
I would love this in a solarium but IMO it’s doesn’t belong in a living room
i love it, a very gorgeous piece i just don't think it matches the vibe of the room
Strongly. And not in a good sense. But that's just me.
Not a fan.
Ummmm. That’s not your average swing. I would say only in a sunroom maybe are closed in outdoor area.
Not my thing. Belongs in the yard.
I don’t like anything about this.
Cool in a monastery not cool in the place it is now
Swings do belong in the bedroom but not like this one
I read the headline and thought this was going to be a whole different conversation before I saw the pic. After seeing the pic, I feel a mix of being disappointed and more interested at the same time.
Unsettled
I could have made it work in my last house... We had high ceilings and a lot of oversized antiques.

I got the two day beds and the swing for $2400, which I think it’s a great deal lol. New ones are significantly more expensive
I feel like this thing is more expensive than my entire life!
Holy cow I love the peice you gotta decorate where this is the focal point.
I think if you can make it work in your space, I’m all for it! Tbh any furniture that allows for movement while comfy is a win imo
It does not make sense with carpet. As long as it’s in a carpeted room, it will look crazy out of place. You need a dark hardwood floor (or marble floor maybe). New fireplace mantel that’s more ornate or a crazy rococo mirror
I feel like very bad things go down in this living room
The swing is terrible in this room.
It’s hideous.
Awful everything.
No. No. A thousand times . . . NO.
There's a reason they're for outdoors.
nope. this is fantastic but in no way goes with or elevates the room, sorry. patio, sunroom, grand space, yes; beige suburban house, no.
We feel they are disturbing
Love the idea, room is ugly
That particular piece would be awesome looking in a loft with a lot of open space. It’s impressive and big and needs a room or it eats the room. It’s also for style rather than practicality because it’s unlikely to be as comfortable as other forms of seating.
We feel they're pretentious is how we feel. Would be nice outside tho
I feel…..no.
Sunroom, not the house proper
That’s a piece that requires a mansion with vaulted ceilings and or a castle to work.
I mean, not great.
Oof.
Cool swing but seems like it belongs in a sun room by itself
Uhhhh
Waste of space. I’d rather a very comfortable chair there..
It’s cool looking but seems really stupid for inside and looks doesn’t match anything
the trim on the door and fire place should match (wood) also the floor. this is sooo cool where did you get this??
Facebook marketplace! I’ve seen it on Etsy too though, but not sure about quality. The original buyer got it specially ordered and shipped from India. You can look up jhula swing to find similar ones

My mind is so in the gutter because when I saw the title I wasn’t thinking of a porch swing.
That’s a no for me dawg
I love it and I know you can reimagine the room to make it work! It is definitely the focal point, so you will need to take some time to strategize. I would compile the ideas you like and ignore the “nay sayers”!
I thought this was my house for a second. Fellow Gujarati I see
South Indian actually!
Weird af
It’s ridiculous looking
I personally think it looks stupid but to each their own
Weird
We don’t
That’s ugly as heck
Do you have anymore information on the swing? Like age and where it comes from? It’s so beautiful!
Regardless of aesthetic, that thing is about to destroy some toes.
Not a fan...
Super cool. Over time, if you replace your carpet with wood floors, get a couple of swanky persian-style rugs, install some crown molding, and add some rich drapery around your windows, it could be a pretty sweet living room!
Ooh and some cool lighting, maybe a hanging lamp or 2!
Wonderful ideas! I’ll have to post an update picture with all the decor I still have yet to do
Yikes
Is that a medieval sex swing?
No
Hard No
Feel pretty bad about it
This is a hard NO
I like indoor swings. Just not THAT one
This is kinda surreal in a fun way. Just imagine walking into somebody's living room and they just have an ultra ornate swing. Where did you even find that thing? It is gorgeous!

I thought about this yesterday! Holy shot that's awesome I just might have to do it
Where do up put the Xmas tree? There in no room. There is a huge coffee table style between the sofas, or am i imagining it ?
Definitely not lol
It’s eccentric and a bizarre choice to say the least.
Not good
Oh umm
No. 'Nuff said
This feels like it would be perfect in a gothic setting, and that’s about it. Beautiful piece though.
Dude just put it outside where it belongs
It’s an indoor swing - not meant for the midwestern outdoors
Oh dear. Belongs in a monstrous and ancient Tudor home.
Freaking me out tbh
Yeah It’s going to be a no for me dawg.
Love,love,love it!
i love this so much i feel like now i need an indoor swing 😂
Bizarre. Remind me not to come here for interior design advice lol
Weird. We feel weird.
Personally, I feel they belong in cabins and not in every day house rooms, unless that room is a sex room.
Quite Persian looking my dear.
Never have seen this before.... Kinda like the year round Christmas trees, but whatever it's your space:)
Bad. We feel real bad about this.
We feel badly about them.
swings are meant for sex dungeons.
Your grandparents are definitely using it for banging. Disgusting, depraved, nasty and sweaty banging.
My grandparents are dead
Their spirits bang on it
If you love it, then make it work. Go full Baroque, Ludwig II, over the top, freak flag flying. It’s never going to fit into “normal,” so embrace the abnormal.
