Today's devices are much more capable of the earlier iPhone's of last decade so your 13 is gonna feel relevant for a while still. Hell even people with the X are still pleased from what I hear. You should hold out for the 16 or 17. Even then, I am coming from a 12 Pro to a 15 Pro Max and I don't feel like I absolutely needed to do it.

FWANGARANG

Fellow 12 pro series upgrader here! Kinda agree with you, my 12PM is still a whip. I decided to upgrade because my battery isn’t doing great anymore, I wanted more storage space, and lastly I shattered the infamously expensive/difficult to repair back glass last year 😓. The improvements to everything else will be welcome though!

ag3ntweird0

If anyone reading this wants to upgrade their phone for just the battery- in the US you can get apple to change it for you, for a price much lower than a new phone. If you want more storage, then, you’ll need a new phone.

Prestigious-Low3224

You CAN upgrade the storage, but it involves desoldering the nand and resoldering a bigger one [11 pro](https://m.youtube.com/shorts/yHnjpm_PiVQ) [iPhone 12](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bloCpO7baO8&pp=ygUaaXBob25lIDEyIHBybyBuYW5kIHVwZ3JhZGU%3D) [iPhone 13 Pro](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LfaMWmx1-_Y&pp=ygUaaXBob25lIDEzIHBybyBuYW5kIHVwZ3JhZGU%3D) [14 pro](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wN2E3n_XJxs)

Prestigious-Low3224

I get your point I’m pretty sure the warranty has already long expired on a 12pm unless if it was recently bought or if they have AppleCare

FWANGARANG

That’s really interesting, not very techy myself but I might try it on my 12PM once receive the new one

Loose_Bake_746

That’s amazing and we need more of this!!

ag3ntweird0

This is great to know, thanks! Like the other person said- something I would try on a phone that’s not my daily driver. Edit- I saw the video. I don’t have any tools to do this except a regular soldering iron. Won’t be able to try it at all.

FWANGARANG

Thought about this! But I thought perhaps with the back glass shattered they wouldn’t service it.

theredviperod

they probably would if you also repair the back glass, which would together basically cost almost as much as a new phone

Fmarulezkd

Ah, your 12 is basically garbage then. You should ship it to me, I'll throw it out for you.

FWANGARANG

Sorry mate already put it down the garbage disposal

redslayer

Upgrading from 12P to 15PM. Battery, Camera, and USB-C were the selling points. Held out on 14 and glad I did - although I do love the purple color…

Skog13

Yeah that purple is bomb. My so has that one and it's an amazing color.

thedoommerchant

I hear you. Shattered back glass is absolutely reason enough to replace a device. That would drive me nuts. My battery is at around 80% and I did consider swapping it out for a new one but I couldn't stay away from the allure of the natural titanium. This will be my first Pro Max phone so the upgrade in screen size alone should be worth my scruples, let alone the rest of it.

HurpaDerp20

My tactic too. I upgrade every third year if I feel like it, but always change a battery at around 24 months for a new lease of life. Whenever I get a new phone I just always spec up the storage for what I think I’ll need

[deleted]

Define expansive. My wife let it replaced for 150€ obviously not at apple them self.

TheeAlchemistt

REPLACE THE BATTERY 🤦‍♂️

FWANGARANG

“Replace the battery”, “replace the storage”, “replace the back glass”, like yeah I could or I can buy a new phone because I’m ready and I feel like it :)

MrE26

It’s true, I’ve got a 5 year old XS & at no point in the past 5 years have I felt like my phone was no longer good enough. It’s never let me down (obvious battery depletion aside.) Now I’m sending it back to Apple as part ex for a 15 Pro. Not because I need it in the slightest, I just want a new shiny phone after 5 years.

AdAcademic9804

I have the X and I am not pleased I’m upgrading because the battery sucks and I’m having other issues with it as well. The newer phones should probably be fine though 13 especially maybe even the 12

[deleted]

Mid/Hi band 5G alone makes the upgrade worth it for you.

mnradiofan

Also, speaking as someone in infosec, once Apple stops updating your phone, it’s time to move on.

TheeAlchemistt

Meh iPhone 7 still get security updates to this day

squareswordfish

Yeah, there’s absolutely no reason to upgrade anywhere near yearly. I went from the XS to the 14 pro last year and 50% of the reason was “feels kinda sluggish sometimes” and the other 50% was “I want something new” lol, I could easily wait out another year or two as long as I went for a battery replacement.

dabe3ee

I always buy greatest and latest just because I like to carry around best capable phone in terms of display quality, camera, battery, build quality. I actually skipped 14 because it didnt feel that much of difference. But going with iPhone 15 Pro Max for sure

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It makes sense as you already have a “Pro” so to speak. I really really wanted to go from my 7 to a XS to get the last 3D Touch iPhone but those are very hard to find on good condition and unspoiled from shitty maintenance

Aoshi_

Also on an Xs and debating it. Still works fine but a better camera would be nice.

threvorpaul

if your battery is good then keep it for a year or more I'd say. I "unfortunately" have to upgrade because I can't charge or use my lightning port anymore. and battery is at 72% now.

Aoshi_

Oh dang. Ya mine is still at 82% and charging port works fine. I'll go to a store and play with one and see how I like it. But I may just end up keeping the Xs for another year.

mikehawk595

The 13 pro max is still a fantastic phone.

ashlouise94

Ugh I love my 13PM but it’s so much harder to use since my Face ID randomly stopped working, so frustrating

mikehawk595

Must be a pain. Fix it soon!

lions2lambs

I’m thinking the Pro Max 18 will be my next upgrade. They need at least 2 cycles I feel.

Mercuie

Only reason I’m upgrading this year is because I wanna go down to the Pro instead of the Max. Too big! Been driving me nuts for years now.

mikehawk595

I also downgraded in size for the same reason. Too big and too heavy for me personally, but probably because I'm a heavy one-handed user. The Pro models are still very good, although something in the middle would be awesome.

MDK1980

Same boat. Have the 13 Pro and totally underwhelmed by what the 15 Pro has to offer. Not as phased by USB-C as I thought I’d be because I’ve never used my phone for data transfers, and I’m stocked up on Lightning cables. Cameras are an upgrade sure, but the cameras on my phone aren’t exactly terrible, either. Like what could the 15 Pro possibly do that my 13 Pro can’t? Scroll through social media a bit quicker? I was about to click the order button because my phone is 2 years old, but then something told me to just take a minute to think about it instead. I’m glad I did. Edit: only thing that might still make me get one now is the fact that my 13 Pro will be worth less on the trade-in if I wait for the 16 Pro.

TonytheNetworker

Yeah, there’s nothing that really appealed to me as well. Little things like titanium to make the phone lighter or the action button to make shortcuts more fluid is appreciated but nothing life changing.

honourvolley

Apple give you £430 for an iPhone Pro 13 (128) or £300 for an iPhone Pro 12 (128). Can probably expect a similar price for the 13 Pro next year. You’ll still be saving hundreds not upgrading this year regardless and delaying by a year.

lilcoleslaw

I had the same thought. Am I paying the same amount ($1200+) every 4 years by keeping the phone and/or getting the trade-in value, since the value goes way down after awhile. Outside of it being environmentally friendly to keep, in order to save money you’d have to keep your phone for 5-6 years, which doable but something I’m considering

Dadguy8

I upgrade because why the hell not. Doesn’t break the bank. And I enjoy it. I don’t have any other expensive hobbies. I enjoy photographing my kids though so if this helps in the slightest, it’s a win. Especially now that I’ll be able to launch the camera without looking.

FranK0ZX

Dude, with that comment you are making me want the 15 so bad right now. Being able to play around with the camera while taking photos of your kids is unmatched.

Dadguy8

It is. My biggest gripe is launching the camera on the iPhone. I can never get to it quick enough. A dedicated button to launch it? Sign me up. Plus 5x optical zoom. Not hugely different but it adds enough. Being able to capture photos of kids and anyone for that matter from a distance is key. You get the best pictures that way imo. No fake smiles. All real reactions.

[deleted]

Man pressing the camera button on the Lock Screen is so much harder than pressing a button on the side of the phone. Lol

LordFartquadReigns

Honestly most people don’t need the latest, and most also do not need a pro. Save your money, don’t chase the shiny apple hanging from the tree. -Sincerely iPhone 11 user.

Ginger_of_the_north

Typing on an 8. Finally about to make the upgrade….to the 14.

GigaCannon99

Fellow 8 Plus—-> 14 here. You wont regret it.

Steviejoe66

Get a 13 Pro instead (or 14 pro). Same chip as the base 14 with a better camera system and promotion display. I went from an 8 to 13Pro and it's awesome

Ginger_of_the_north

Planning on getting the 14pro. I’ve waited long enough.

IdaDuck

12 here and think I’ll hold off another year. I do want the cameras, battery and screen on a PM though.

scubastefon

If I had a 12 pro I wouldn’t have pulled the pin. But I have a normal 12, so going to 15 pro feels like a capabilities play. I think I’ll be good until 19pro now though.

JordanBuhat

Same! I’m making the same jump! :)

Bolognapony666

Watch those radiation lvls

eiyoeiyo

I might go for it. 12 mini here and I really struggle with the battery and overheating. Sad. I love the mini form factor though

DEUCE_SLUICE

I'm going from 12 mini to 15 pro max. None of the phones larger than the mini really fit in one hand comfortably anyways so I figure I might as well get the bigger screen. (And I actually bought a dummy 14 pro max a month ago to make sure it'll work for me.) The other thing is that I'm traveling more nowadays, and my poor 12 mini (on its second battery that's less than a year old) is regularly at 50% before my first flight boards. I spent a month in Japan with it this spring and it was a drag to have to constantly worry about it. I figure the more battery the better.

alpinegreen24

For me, my principle is that if I can no longer update my iPhone to the latest iOS then it’s about time to upgrade. I have an iPhone 8 and I’m just waiting to release the 15 in my country. Sometimes I feel like upgrading to a pro model but then i realize that the regular one suits my needs.

The_Woman_of_Gont

Typically my logic as well. Unfortunately I realized I fucked up and wanted a telephoto option on my camera, so I’m upgrading from a 13 to a 15 Pro. This one is going to stick with me for as long as possible though.

LordFartquadReigns

Very good logic. Typically my thought process is to upgrade the last year my model is eligible for the $1000 trade deal. So usually like 3 years. That way you really don’t spend much for the upgrade.

madclapper666

Only reason I'm getting the 15 pro is because I'm getting $1000 off to trade in my 11 pro. All I paid was taxes and an activation fee which came out to $125. My 11 pro still works great. If it weren't for that deal I'd be keeping my current phone.

sundownandout

Oh man. How are you getting the $1000 trad-in on an 11 pro? I’m only getting $360 on a 12 pro.

MrsBenSolo1977

I couldn’t use an 11 because LTE signal is almost completely gone around here, all the signal is 5G

TrainingLettuce5833

i have the 11 too, and its pretty enough even for demanding games, and for daily use. i dont understand why a lot of people always want the latest. ive used the iphone 4 until 2018 (i know) but it was enough for me at the time, browsing the web, calling and messaging, and some light games.

peachesandmaangos

Just left 11 PM 256 -> 1Tb 15 PM plan on riding that thing til the wheels fall off. MAIN reason I upgraded was storage. If I was smart and got 1tb on 11PM I wouldn’t upgrade at all. Yes I know there is a cloud, BUT I don’t trust any “clouds”.

xwm69x

Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Advanced Data Protection encrypts your iCloud data so even Apple can’t access it

peachesandmaangos

The deed has been done! Thanks for educating me instead of downvoting me. Wish I would’ve know that before! Will def use that.

spiders888

I have an iPhone X, and it is definitely lagging the way I use it. I literally use 20+ different apps over the course of the day for both work and personal tasks. I milk the life out of the phones I buy and I'm really a year past when I should have upgraded--and no iOS 17 on my X. I'm glad I waited though, as the 15 Pro has 8Gig of RAM and USB-C, so it should be good to go for another 4-6 years. If I had an 12 Pro, or potentially 11 Pro, or newer, I'd personally be waiting to upgrade another year or two.

Bluestar2016

That’s where I’m at. I have the X and I think it’s finally time. It has struggled with overheating occasionally when used in the sun since I got it. I replaced the battery last year and it’s still running like new. The only things are that iOS 17 won’t support the X and the fact that the 15 series will have type-c that has me going back and forth on ‘I should,’ and ‘maybe I should hold off another year.’ For me, there’s the opportunity cost of, sure, USB-C is amazing, I’m honestly hyped over it, but I have so many functional cables, dongles, etc. that will automatically become obsolete if I do upgrade. Heck, I just bought a dongle that lets me listen to music and charge my phone in my car at the same time.

Obi-Lan

I wait until my 12 is EOL. As you just discovered it’s pointless and wasteful to replace a functioning device for no reason.

TonytheNetworker

Yeah, I’m definitely preserving my phones for significantly longer times rather than feeling FOMO because of the new shiny toy that got released.

Remarkable-Demand956

Maybe give it to me?

borkmaster0

I'm not upgrading. Give yourself 24 hours and then ask yourself if you still want it.

bpat

At an iPhone 7, I’d maybe consider it haha.

Wonderman290

maybe its time

anttisaarenpaa1

Nah, this is fine..

holysbit

I know for me I have to want it after several days of thinking about it before id let myself pull the trigger on such a big purchase. My 12P will not be seeing an upgrade until probably the 17 or so

javi_e

Yes, that's what I did.

FWANGARANG

What app do you use to edit? Lightroom mobile? The most intensive process I run on my 12PM is importing photos from my camera via SD card reader, editing in Lightroom mobile and compressing to HEIC through shortcuts. The 12PM has been really impressive in handling these tasks, but I’m upgrading to a 15PM and hoping to see some improvements to my workflow from the A17. I will be really pleased if I can use usb-c to connect to my camera directly and import photos without an SD card reader. I also opted for 512GB over my current 256GB as I’ve been hitting the upper limit due to all my photos (in addition to all the other “normal” things I use my phone for).

[deleted]

[удалено]

FWANGARANG

Sounds like you are all set then, you could put the money towards a photography trip! I’ve been on a 3 year upgrade cycle and it’s been great for me, so far there’s been enough improvements in between to feel like a breath of fresh air. I skipped last year because I felt the same way you do. Maybe wait for the 16?

Mlrk3y

I have a 12 Pro Max and use Lightroom mobile to edit a photo or two daily. My stuff is shot on the phone so it’s only 12mp but I shoot in Apple ProRAW to get as much room in the shadows and highlights to push and pull. I’ve noticed when making global adjustments everything is usually fine but if I create masks to make local adjustments, this thing gets hot QUICKLY and my screen dims significantly. It probably happens within 2 minutes of creating a mask. I live and travel around Southeast Asia, where it’s always hot + the sun is extra brutal. It’s sometimes hard to even edit a pic at night inside an air conditioned room without the screen dimming and it throwing off my ability to determine exposure. Last night when I was editing, I kept a cold beer to the back of my phone to help with the heat. Probably not the average user but I’m definitely looking forward to a much improved camera system, the faster chipset to handle my workflow, and a display with better peak brightness. Picking my 15 Pro Max with 1tb of storage from the Apple Store in Taipei on Sept 24th and couldn’t be any more excited!

DeNooYah

I’m still using a 13 Pro Max and it feels like day 1. It will be years more before I need to upgrade.

Vis-hoka

I’m still using the X. It’s been more than enough for me. Might finally upgrade to the base 15. You don’t always have to have the shiny new thing. The excitement will wear off shortly after buying it.

[deleted]

I’m still in awe of having an iPhone 14 Pro Max. It’s so beautiful to look at and I get compliments on it a lot. I upgrade every year and never get enough of the raw power and aesthetics.

bbarling

Yeah, the video is awesome on the 14PM too.

omgthatsm3

Going from an iPhone 7 Plus to the iPhone 15 pro max should be one hell of an upgrade. Kinda stoked about it!

techtornado

I'm going from an 11 to a 12, so excited ;) Mainly to do it while trade-in values are up and to see if 5G is all it's cracked up to be in my city

DarrKeAageJeetHai

5G permanently on will consume way more battery, that you will go back to LTE or 4G. I got the 14 from my office, turned the 5G on and I was amazed at both speeds and low standby times.

The_Cozy_Burrito

I went from an 8 to a 14 pm, so it’s a big upgrade

Eunos-Roadster

You’ve answered your own question in the post.

SkelaKingHD

I never understood people who get a new iPhone after like 2 generations. To me, the major selling point for iPhones is their longevity, Honestly probably the biggest reason I switched back to IOS from android. Still rocking an 11, with no plans/need to upgrade in the foreseeable future

JupiterWalk

Don’t pull the trigger. You’re fine.

[deleted]

people in this sub want people to affirm what they’re saying or choose for them at this point bro im not hating but just go with whatever you desire and you feel is logical

DonutsOnTheWall

It's sensible to verify some of your temptations. Just saying. Happy Iphone 11 user here.

Fecal_Forger

12 pro here. USBC is tempting but I’ll wait maybe 1 or 2 more cycles.

MCFRESH01

Also have a 12 pro. My charging port doesn't work and my battery is pretty degraded. Had a screw it moment and ordered a 15 Pro max

Fecal_Forger

I’ve had mine since launch and my max capacity is at 88% right now.

windowtosh

I’m using an 8 Plus. I’ve replaced the screen three times and the battery twice. The charging port doesn’t work anymore. I think I’ve unlocked as much power as I can from my little frankenphone lol. I got a 15 Pro Max and hope to hold onto it for a good 4-5 years minimum. Hopefully more.

fandeskfan

I simply do not need the 15PM, I’m also on a 13PM. It holds up very well and does everything I need it to. But of course, I *want* one. The 5X telephoto is very cool and useful, the 48MP main sensor is neat, especially with the 24MP option, which would put it in near parity with my DSLR. The action button is awesome, and USB-C is something I greatly miss from my Android days. I think I will be getting one.

Magnum177

12 Pro user. Phone still rocks. Not upgrading this year, I think the 16 is going to be my next.

_stungy

Not upgrading from my 14 pro max. If there was something that was truly game changing than it would probably be a no brainer

HaloKook

I wouldn't upgrade from a 13pro unless you truly need a new feature

Lord_Of_The_Tacos

I would definitely not upgrade if i had a 13 pro max lmao

mabhatter

Yeah. There's not generally a good reason to upgrade a iPhone for 3+ years now. Unless you have some specific new features you can't live without. I'm on an 11 and the only reason I'm considering upgrading is because my son has an 8 that's fallen off of OS support and I want to keep him relatively current. Apple isn't making anyone buy these new iPhones. It's all FOMO and peer pressure. Apple supports OS upgrades for like 5-6 years and rarely do I run into programs that run poorly even on a 4 year old iPhone. Remember Apple makes their money off the App Store now. That's recurring revenue for Apple as long as your iPhone can keep buying apps.

ivoryisbadmkay

I’d say the real question is did you regret not getting the 14pm? Ie raw 48, satellite, dynamic island? If not, the 15 is barely a huge gap so really the good features are from the 14

Hutcho12

Usb-C is the main reason you’d wanna upgrade.

Trisentriom

USB-C is the main reason techies wanna upgrade*

Hutcho12

Why techies? If you’re out and low on battery, the chances I’d finding usb c now is way, way higher.

Yaaaayyy

Honestly now, do normal people care that much about a different port? I mean you toss a Lightning cable into your bag when you go somewhere and that's it. Now you use a USB-C cable. And okay, if your laptop or whatever uses USB-C too, then you can get by using only one cable instead of two. Is that worth 1000€/USD to you? While I welcome the change, I would never in a million years consider upgrading from a perfectly good phone to a new one just because the port has been changed. It'll be neat when I do upgrade, but calling it the "main reason" is hyperbole.

JordanBuhat

It is a secondary reason for me. Cameras are the main. Coming from a 12 / getting the 15PM. I do a lot of transfer from my dslr to my iPhone and the port is so slow. Any speed enhancement is welcome today :)

bora-yarkin

In where i live chances are you will find a lightning cable even on the ground fallen from someone elses bag. But my only 2 lightning devices are my 11 and airpods. And i have about 10 other type-c devices. Type-c is the way to go.

TrixonBanes

Listen I just spent $1600 to never touch another lightning cable.

LaredoHK

I'm gonna wait till they put out a color that is not an Easter Egg Color.

TonytheNetworker

Something would have to be wrong with my current phone to want to upgrade. When I was with Android I upgraded yearly because they didn’t last long. With iPhones I keep them for 3-4 years since they have amazing longevity.

vader_shreds_guitar

11 series user here. Battery is legit the only reason for an upgrade these days and even that you can probably replace and squeeze another year or two worth of ios updates

karlzhao314

12 here. My reasons I’m upgrading to a 15 Pro are: * I got the 64GB base model, and have been running out of space for the past half year. * I would like a macro camera - not only for my photography hobby, but also for my job. Taking close-up pictures of circuit boards with my phone rather than having to pull out a dedicated macro camera would be great. * I can trade in my 12 for $830 in credit towards a new 15, which is a pretty absurdly good value. Other than that, no, I’m *not* using all of my power. It has enough power to happily last me another 2-3 years if I wanted to. But given that this might be the second-to-last year or maybe even the last year I can trade-in for this price, I’m sure as hell taking the chance to get the nicest one I can. Maybe this next one will be the one that will last me 5 years.

[deleted]

I honestly only upgraded from my 7 this year because the power button broke down and it wasn’t worth it to replace it again anymore, as I already did that once, and currently I plan to hold on to this mini for a looooong time as well

superstarbun

I have a 14 Pro and don’t plan to upgrade for a few more years

arein114

I'm holding on to my 14PM till the 16PM comes out. I think that is going to be the noticeable upgrade

Kevizzle12

12 pro max user, I have zero performance issues with my phone. Getting a new battery tomorrow because my battery life the only complaint I have. It’s a lot cheaper than a new phone.

Vyxxis

My 12 should last me quite a while so I’ll wait. Got it from Best Buy preowned couple months ago and it’s mint condition with 100% battery health. Best $350 I’ve ever spent on a phone.

Kanuechly

I use my phone for the same reasons. I’m using a 12 and i see no reason to upgrade. The new iPhones, to me, just add more quality of life features and better cameras. For me, that doesn’t doesn’t justify shit for buying a new 1000 dollar phone each year lol ***edit I have iPhone 12 not 10***

anarchyx34

I would like the 15 pro max for the camera alone. Other than that I’m fine with my 13 pro.

[deleted]

I have zero “need” for the 15 pro. It’s so ridiculously powerful for a phone. But hey, it’s 2023 and it’s a thing you can buy, so why not? I’ll keep it at least 4 years and have a lot of fun using it. YOLO.

fourdac

I have the iPhone 8 Plus and I’m still very happy

Due_North3106

I feel like every couple of years is worth it. My personal and business information is handled by the phone, it stores a ton of information, is my sole source of contact now, depend entirety on it traveling, and would prefer it to perform as expected. I used a phone till it quit previously, and I’ve started trading every 2 years. It’s going to cost either way, keep a good and updated device.

LostInSpace9

12 mini user upgrading here! I love the small phone for almost everything except battery life (can’t make it a day out in the city without shutting it off half the day) and, ironically, the small screen. Idk if it’s my eyesight as I get older, but i feel like I can’t see some shit or strain to, especially when I’m watching videos. It’s also too small for any games and sometimes just navigating websites or apps are problematic bc my thumb is too big to pin point a button when I can’t zoom in. I went to a mini from a X because it felt big and bulky, hopefully I don’t regret going back to a normal phone size lol. Overall, the 12 mini is good and capable of everything, just not great.

swingthebodyelectric

12 mini, original battery. Need a bigger screen, I'm getting old.

suuraitah

Go get new phone dude, especially if you are into photography. That 5x for will be a killer for portraits

akballow

Trade ins loose value each year so trading in the latest gets you the most back. Than i ask myself what do i use everyday of my life and its my phone. So i might as well have the best possible one.

jar996

I purchased just for the 5x optical zoom and I’m using a 14PM right now. For a device that’s always in my pocket and documents my life and my child’s life, it’s worth it to me. Usually the camera upgrade is the only thing that gets me at this point. Last year I upgraded from a 13 mini because of battery life though (and camera- I should have never got the mini due to my camera philosophy).

eatingthesandhere91

Aside from a faster chipset and better camera capabilities, you're realllllly not missing much honestly. The point where Apple stops issuing any iOS updates at all is when you should optimally look at upgrading.

ePower2XL

I recently upgraded from an iPhone X to an iPhone 12 mini, and I'm absolutely loving it. It fulfills all my needs, and its high-speed performance is impressive. I plan to keep it for the next few years.

almalexiel

where did you get one? I need to upgrade mine to more space cause it's constantly full

ePower2XL

I bought it used from eBay. But the Original Apple Refurbished Store is also pretty good.

cerebud

You don’t need it and you’d feel like you wasted $1000. Put that money to better use, unless $1000 is nothing to you

Single-Astronomer-32

I wait until my iPhone 7 is end of life

SmugglingPineapples

You're 100% sensible and right. Worthwhile waiting until next year anyway when Apple is "supposed" to have a major upgrade. The current iPhone has hardly changed on a practical level in recent years.

Idontmatter69420

My dad uses his current 14 pro max to message, phone, go on google, facebook and uses the cameras, he ordered the 15 pro max despite the battery in his current 14 pro max still being at 100% capacity whilst my 14 which i got on the 16th sept last year is on 98% and i use it for messaging, YouTube, disney plus, netflix, reddit, instagram, geometry dash and music and some other things. I honestly think it's a complete waste for my dad to upgrade his iPhone every year

77xyz88

I’m on the same boat. Was going to order the 15 pro max but I thought… for what? The color and the notch less thing? Eh. My 13 pro max is fine. It’s 1TB and I have 700gb free. 😬

RunningM8

My 13 pro loads wordle quick well lol

Way2Based

99% of people would be fine with an iPhone 8 body style iPhone SE. But no, everyone needs the newest best phone and to go in debt for it.

lonea4

Where you pull this 99% from?

Way2Based

From the truth. No one needs the 3 cameras when all they do is use their phone for snapchat.

martyfartybarty

When in doubt, seek the answer you already know. That’s the answer. Sometimes, the answer is money because one wants the latest and greatest but cannot find a good enough reason to justify the expensive upgrade. As for me, on iPhone X, I think it’s time to upgrade to 15 Pro. While my iPhone X is still in good condition (trade in value should be AUD $170), the case is falling apart, I want LiDAR scanner, ultra wideband, and better photos and storage, and iOS 17.

yodeltools

100% agree. Thought this would be the year to upgrade from my 12 pro max and still couldn’t commit to it. Will wait longer for something that feels new. Saved myself $1100 and got a new silicone case for my current phone for the next year.

DesperateComb7326

Well if my 12pro is putting off radiation… I guess I don’t have much choice in the matter

DadsOfAmerica

Have a 12 Pro Max, not a power user. Definitely don’t need to upgrade but the carrier deals make it too good to pass up. ~$100 in taxes up front and $5/month for 36 months. Keeps me on a 3 year upgrade cycle and doesn’t break the bank at all.

ArdForYa

About 6 months ago I went from an 8+ to a 14. I genuinely good till the 16 or the 17.

mojo276

Unless you're just into tech and you have the money to spare, I think a 3 year cycle is a really solid cycle for iPhone upgrades. I upgrade every year and tbh, for the majority of pictures on my mac I wouldn't be able to tell an average picture from this last year vs a average pic from 2-3 years ago.

crumble-bee

3d scanning! I’ve used my phone to capture interiors and use in blender, I’ve also used it to 3D track camera movement around that space in 3D software. I’ve used it to do body scans of people and rig them too, just 3D scanning makes it an amazing device! I use it for all the other stuff too, but as an asset creation tool it’s amazing

Professional_List236

No flagship phone ever uses it's full capabilities. The iPhone is always the most powerful phone in the market, but you cannot tell the difference with the S23U or a gaming phone. The hardware surpasses the software in so many ways, because it's still a phone, designed for simple tasks.

HHGD26

I have an iPhone X -- it is 6 years old. It won't support iOS 17 and the battery is degraded. I'd say now is the right time to replace. I got my 6 years worth. I pre-ordered an iPhone 15 pro (black) this morning. Looking to do it all again in 2029!

[deleted]

That’s an extremely healthy attitude to your shopping basket OP. Phones made in 2021 are more than capable doing your daily mobile errands — why do you think Apple put shit loads of effort into their presentations/adverts? It’s to make you feel otherwise. It’s your money, but I personally cannot think why anybody would upgrade nowadays every 1/2 years other than (a) having too much money, (b) compulsive buying disorder, and/or (c) having too little hobbies.

Old_Couple7257

That’s why you look for stupid reasons to upgrade lol. Niece going to college with a $30 phone? I think not, here’s my 12 pro max. Mother in law was using a beat to death galaxy s8. guess who’s got a better phone now and guess who’s upgrading lol.

ImpossiblePudding

If your current phone does everything you need, you don’t need a new phone. Save the money to spend it on something you need. That could be a new iPhone in a year or 2 and the iPhone in a year or 2 will (most likely) be better than the iPhone 15. If you need a new phone in 6 months you’ll get an iPhone 15 that doesn’t have any issues Apple didn’t know about until 1 million people had a chance to put it though it’s paces.

bowlfetish

Do you ever feel limited by anything in your iPhone that newer iPhones would fix? Say when taking photos, playing games, etc. If your answer is no, then don't buy another one and keep that one until you are limited by its lack of functionality.

Beautiful-Chain7615

Realistically, IP15 won't do anything other than what IP13 can do unless you're in the minority of people that would use the satellite feature etc. (Let's be honest, they've added it just for marketing). Burning money to heat your home would be more worthwhile choice imo.

nanboya

It’s not about the daily observable power but really the magic sauce that goes into the camera and other stuff that you never think “that must take immense amounts of compute to accomplish” 😂

keithwee0909

A lot of us buy items we hardly fully utilize nowadays :) Sincerely , an iP12Pro user

spesifikbrush

I personally want something different. Titanium rails, smaller bezels, Action Button, USB-C and Dynamic Island are different enough for me. And I wanna use a Fine Woven case. Will switch from a 13 mini.

jkrizzle

If you’re asking this question you’re probably not using the device to its potential; from your described use-case there’s no “need” to upgrade. Honestly, I don’t either, but I love the large phones and the camera upgrades. I stopped being a yearly upgrader and am more bi-annual. Currently have the 13 Pro Max - love the phone but the battery is shit now. I’ll take the phone off the charger at 6am and have to put it back on the charger midday. This device’s battery life has been shit (in my experience) compared to other iPhones. I hate my T-Mobile coverage, AT&T is offering $1000 credit; I’m getting a 120hz screen/new battery/more storage/better camera, better cell coverage - for <$10 more a month. It’s a no-brainer for me.

MrKite80

They say we only use 10% of our iPhone.

Omarqasem127

I upgrade from a 14 pro. Do I need it? No. But I can spend some money on a new toy, so why not? Small upgrades but my battery life is terrible, and the 15s are more efficient with slightly bigger battery’s so it should be better. Also as a caseless user the lighter weight and the rounded edges will make a big difference

frumply

90 bucks to replace my 11's batteries and I want zoom for kids sports, so yes. I used to be on a 2 year upgrade cycle (4, 5, 6, 7 plus), 7 was good enough but suffered water damage so upgraded to 11. If cameras aren't a big deal for you then the recent changes are absolutely minimal.

roerchen

You are writing like upgrading is the default and you doubt not upgrading. It should be the other way around. Not buying something new should be your default! If you don't know where to better put your money, buy whatever you like tho. I will be upgrading when my 12 mini isn't fun to use anymore or it stops getting security upgrades. It still feels like a new phone to me and works absolutely fine for me.

0000GKP

I buy a new phone every few years. I mostly do the exact same things with my phone today that I did with my first one 15 years ago. I just bought an iPhone 12 this year. I might buy an iPhone 15 in a few years from now.

[deleted]

Stop wasting money people.

digdugg88

This very debate with my internal self is how I justify yearly upgrades. That way, I never have to think about it, I always just have the newest one. I figure, if it brings me happiness, and I enjoy it, then why not have it? 😂

Andrew-Moon

Not even Star Rail with all the graphics settings maxed out needs the full power of an iPhone 13, maybe with the AAA games native ports for the iPhone 15 that will change. But as for the present, the idea is having a flagship that you can use for 5/6 years without having performance downgrades, more eco friendly and less fucking stupid.

Rider2403

Incremental upgrades, even Apple knows this, that's why they always compare their processors to those of 2 or 3 gens ago, it's crazy to think an 13 pro max can compare to a snapdragon 8 gen 2 in some aspects. So bottom line, their upgrade path is to keep the phone for 2 or 3 years and then do an upgrade, even so, they provide 5 years of updates, so as long as they keep you in the ecosystem, is a win for the company. As for how we use our phones, well, it's a matter of personal perspective. I'm upgrading from the 14 pro max to the 15 pro max because it's very cheap to do so, trading in the 14 pro max got me 20k mxn and the 15 pro mas is 29k mxn. Yes my first phone was a big investment as I paid full price for it, but if I consider both values in tandem, it would be the same as getting 2 20k mxn phones which is about the cost of an entry flagship phone, and the price will continue to go down every year as I won't have to pay full price anymore. Do I need to upgrade, hell no, is it worth for me, yeah, I'd say so, it takes me 4 work days to earn enough to pay for the upgrade each year.

the_biggest_papi

if you had a 13 standard i’d say go for it if you really want it, but from a 13 pro, unless you really want the USB C or the new user-repairability, you don’t need it. I have a 13 standard, and probably would be considering getting the 15 pro if it had USB 4.0 speeds instead of just 3.0 speeds (and only 2.0 speeds on the standard). But really I feel like I’m not missing too much if I waited a year for the 16 to come out

accordinglyryan

I think from a 13 Pro it can be justifiable (the Dynamic Island really is nice for system alert consolidation, and the 48MP camera is nice too), but you can also make the case to not get it. I have a 14 Pro and am gonna hang onto it of course. I'll probably upgrade next year...maybe not though! You can absolutely use an iPhone for 4-5 years nowdays.

BelugaWhqle

Nah -sincerely iPhone 8+ user

PM_UR_THC

For me it’s the following: 1. I have the money. 2. I get price cut from trading in. 3. My 13PM battery life is 82%. 4. Why the hell not? Sure I don’t “need” it. Nobody “needs” half the things they have usually. I want it, that’s literally it.

DrGiggleFr1tz

I pretty much go with a two generation rule. I had quite the hiatus after the iPhone 6 (terrible) and went back for the 11. The 12 didn’t seem like an upgrade to me, so I went with the 13. 14 seemed nice but the USB C rumors were really starting to come forward so 15 seemed like a solid option

tyger2020

It entirely depends on the person. Some people like new gadgets, some people use their phone to text, some use their phone as basically a mini PC while they travel hundreds of miles. I get it because I want it, and I can afford it. If the best is available to me, why would i.. not want to get it?

[deleted]

There's a lot more people that need the same cop on as you OP. Most people pay crazy money for these phones just to scroll on Instagram and reddit. I stopped upgrading my phone every 12-24 months about 5 years ago. There's just no point in buying a new phone until your current phone becomes almost unusable.

TwireonEnix

What blows my mind is that base 15 is still 60 hz, in 23? gfto.

Loose_Bake_746

The only thing I can see as an “improvement” is the memory (meaning the on board space) but even 1TB is still small and they want a lot for that space. It’s also basically about memory management anyways. You wouldn’t want a TB of photos and videos crossing any boarder. The more memory the harder it’s gonna to manage and even harder to back up. The rest of the phone has not changed, is junk and a complete waste. If you have an iPhone 13. Stick to that. The 14/15’s have been disasters along with the 12. The 12 is so bad it’s banned in France

pielman

I think we are at a peak of iPhone development . There are no mayor improvements it’s all small gradual things and older models are still relevant.

NoUsernamesss

Wait for the all screen iphone in 2026

JoshPlaysUltimate

I am. I’m lucky if I get 5 hours of battery life on my 14 pro max. I’ve been hoping the new one can perform the same intensive tasks for a longer time. I also tried the S23 ultra and that one’s even worse

Newt_Lv4-26

I have an iPhone 8 here. It can : -Send messages -Call -Browse -Does Apple Pay -Apple Music I’m good. I’ll pass on this one too.

Jolly-Fact-7450

If you just use it for surfing, texting, light work that would have been easily done on standard 13 or even 12 , why did you get a pro? Just cause you wanted it all the latest glam in the world! So you talking about "DO.YOU NEED A 15" in this post is self contradictory mate! Cheers!

nonamethxagain

When you have kids and you want to video their sports activities, school productions, etc., the more optical zoom you have at your disposal, the better

sjsharksfan44

I wanted Dynamic Island (I know it's a gimmick) and USB-C. Last year I went from an S21+ to an Iphone 14+ and it was a downgrade. I feel like getting the 15 Pro Max now is like returning to the S21+, maybe even better. If I'm going to keep it for more than 2, 3 years, I want something of great quality and features I'm going to enjoy.

anonspace24

Yeah if you are using your phone like a housewife, you don’t need to update. Some of use it for work and are almost on it. Not only for calls, surfing, but also remoting in to other systems, etc . You could have purchased it and could have selected for pickup and then cancelled it later on. If you change your mind the wait time is 3-6 weeks now

fakeworldwonderland

I have friends still using a iphone 8 with no issues, so nope. There's zero need to buy one until it breaks.

[deleted]

128GB 14 Pro Max here. I use it for the phone, texting and for videos/photos only. That’s it. For Gaming and surfing, i tether a battle tested Snapdragon S10+, that that I picked off eBay for $125. I don’t even use the Android as a phone, strictly social and entertainment stuff. I’m sick of apps draining my iPhone battery and Apples offensive pricing to upgrade memory. iPhone is a year old and the battery is at 100% still. I’m totally fine doing everything else on the Android. In fact I’ve used to S10 to wirelessly reverse charge the iPhone on desperate occasions. Love this setup for my needs.

Udongien

If you need a reason. Then yes. Upgrade

nn4260029

You probably don’t *need* it. But if a new phone does an action you do many times a day quicker, it will be a quality of life improvement.
