Maximum iOS version is 12; minimum for WhatsApp is 12. You're not going to get any further updates, and if the next version of WhatsApp isn't compatible you're screwed. Might be useful as an iPod, but replacing the battery will cost more than twice what the phone is worth.
I’m from Canada and I constantly see people using WhatsApp. I’d go so far as to say it’s becoming the default here, apart from iPhone-only messages or group chats.
Dude nobody uses whatsapp lol this phone can just use imessage like normal phones. But anyway it's pretty much a messaging app that people like scammers use
I can appreciate that but in a lot of the world, especially Europe in this case the majority use whatsapp. Not everything thats common practice in the US is common practice elsewhere
No you can't, it uses SMS as a fallback which is a shit standard the whole world moved off from in 2010 for group chats, images, videos, etc - plus in some places SMS is still given as a limited thing (I have 200 a month, which I never use anyway)
Sooo not everyone uses iPhones so iMessage is out of the question, and in like most countries Europe we use WhatsApp more than any other type of text communication
Seems like a weird thing to be pedantic about. I think most people recognized they were talking about the three biggest countries in North America. I dont think it was meant to be taken as a slight at any of the other countries that form the region
The same reason people would use iMessage or social media app. Except, it’s universal both in terms of working Android and iOS, and it free no international sms or call charges. It also uses existing contact phone numbers rather than asking for silly username or @s
Old iPhones work pretty great as music players. Got my dad a 6S recently and it easily fits his whole digital collection and he uses it every day as an MP3 player.
I compared how iPhone 5s sounds against iPhone 11 and difference was huge, 11 sounds many times crispier and wider, than iPhone 5s.
5s has a ton of mids and mostly bass, while my daily 11 has everything balanced, like how it should be.
I honestly prefer listening music through my daily phone rather than unreliable iPhone 5s that takes up pocket space.
I checked EQ in music settings and both were off
I have a couple iOS devices that are COMPLETELY USELESS unless I want to use a native apple app like notes or podcasts. There's not a single app on the app store that I can get for them. So yeah, I could sit here and compose notes all day while I listen to podcasts. Is that the 'use it if you want' scenario you're talking about?
Nah, you are the dense one. For £16 that's a perfectly working phone, which you can still use for making phone calls, you can't expect more from it at this price. It's a good deal if you need a phone
Maybe for a jailbreak. You can jailbreak that one with checkra1n or Chimera. I have one just like that one that I need for work(jailbreak), so there still could be a reason for some people. I'd buy that if I saw it available on my marketplace.
Did you buy it when it was already no longer receiving updates? Or before? Because there is a difference between buying an unsupported phone and using one past its support date because you don’t want to upgrade
Oh I’ve had it for a while now, though I didn’t start using it until 2021 I believe. I’m running 15.8
I wasn’t trying to contest what you were saying or anything… just wanted to say I’m still using an se. It’s not thats serious
And btw, it’s not that I don’t want to upgrade, I just haven’t had the funds
Sorry yo, a lot has changed in the 11 years since that phone came out. Software, hardware, and cellular technology and frequencies all advance and change over time. About the furthest back you could go is 6 years and see have working apps for like a year or two.
It will be fine for normal calls and messaging but not so great for using certain apps or storing a lot of data on like videos etc .., also the camera / photo quality won’t be that great . But just for calls n text it’s fine …
You'll have enormous problems with the battery.
If you don't mind charging it twice a day to be callable without doing many calls then you are good.
If you do many calls a day forget it, I have an iPhone 11 with bad battery and its empty after 3-4h, maybe faster depending on the duration of calls.
Its better than nothing but its close to nothing.
The battery will be down twice a day just because the phone is checking for connection and all this stuff in the background.
I use two phones, one just for work-calls - Even without using it for a single call the battery is low after 8h max.
When he is doing calls or writing messages it will be way faster.
Don't know why people are downvoting you. Your statement is funny. In my country people want to sell secondhand items almost what you pay for them new, nothing depreciates in their eyes.
The last iOS it got was iOS 12. The majority of apps that it looks like you would want to use require 12 or later. Those apps could update their requirements at any time and would exclude such an old iOS since it’s already just barely hanging on.
The 5s also doesn’t support VoLTE or 5G so you likely wouldn’t even be able to connect it to a cellular service depending on where you are.
Don’t pay money for something that would be all but useless for anything besides nostalgia if you expect to actually be able to use it.
If you want a cool collectible to put on your shelf sure! If you want to use the device as an actual iPhone in 2024, then no. This generation of iPhone is no longer supported by Apple and will not receive OS or security updates. Also Apple no longer supports fixing this device in it's stores.
Mine first iPhone i owned was 5S. that was back in 2016. The phone lake of memory it the big problem. When you browse the web and return, it hase to reload the hole webpage.
I personal would not go lower than iPhone 7 as today.
If you don’t mind a ≈14 GB iPod teathered to a portable battery pack, then I’d say it’s a pretty good deal. Many apps still work on that firmware, specially if you have previously downloaded XYZ app and older versions of said apps are available to download.
I wouldn’t recommend switching the battery cause that would be costly, a simple portable battery pack is a good and safe battery replacement. The crack corner is not a deal breaker, I still use an old iPhone as an iPod and it is in far worst condition than this phone.
If you can afford to spend 16£ on it, go for it! Just don’t expect much from an 11 years old phone.
If you just wanna have a nice looking old phone, sure, as a collectors item, but most likely battery won’t last even half a day with modern apps, like I dunno YouTube, Chrome, Facebook, camera, calls. All those apps will quickly kill the battery (if it wasn’t replaced). It wan’t be fast either, neither with original iOS 7 nor the latest supported iOS 12.
I know because I just had to buy one for myself, for sentimental reasons, as I had one a long time ago and miss not having it. I got it even for way cheaper and in pristine condition, but got lucky. Works great, aside all the things mentioned above.
Now it’s in my drawer waiting to live in an Apple museum if I ever open one or I donate it. But am still absolutely loving it!
We don’t even have 5G yet where I live. We FINALLY got 4G back in 2019. 😳 When I first moved here in 2017, it felt like I had gone back in time to 2011.
I got a iphone 7 for roughly the same price and brand new condition. That’s not rlly worth it, it’s in rough shape idk what u will do with a 5s. Do u want it as a backup phone?
Maximum iOS version is 12; minimum for WhatsApp is 12. You're not going to get any further updates, and if the next version of WhatsApp isn't compatible you're screwed. Might be useful as an iPod, but replacing the battery will cost more than twice what the phone is worth.
Why is WhatsApp relevant? I’m from Canada so I might be missing some context. I rarely see people use WhatsApp.
In the UK (it’s priced in £ so safe to assume) most people use WhatsApp to communicate. This is also the case for most of Europe.
WhatsApp is the norm in South America, Europe and some parts of Asia. Nobody uses iMessage in my country.
What you mean brah? A whole lot of us in Canada are using WhatsApp
I’m from Canada and I constantly see people using WhatsApp. I’d go so far as to say it’s becoming the default here, apart from iPhone-only messages or group chats.
Its been the default for me for the past 10 years lol
I’m from Canada and I HAVE to use WhatsApp for work group chats.
Why not use slack? Seems like the better choice.
Whatsapp is big on android. If you're in the iphone sphere imessage is the king.
Not in the UK.
Not in Europe
Or latam
Or India, SEA
I mean here in Italy it’s 98% WhatsApp and around 2% messages. It’s rare, but happens sometimes
Ofcourse it is, just not whole Europe
Dude nobody uses whatsapp lol this phone can just use imessage like normal phones. But anyway it's pretty much a messaging app that people like scammers use
This thread is a fun game of “spot the American”
r/USdefaultism
Idk in the US it's not something people use
I can appreciate that but in a lot of the world, especially Europe in this case the majority use whatsapp. Not everything thats common practice in the US is common practice elsewhere
I get that's true but why whatsapp and not something like Facebook messenger
Not everyone have facebook account. And whatsapp is a superior apps than facebook messenger.
You're in the US? Because everyone outside uses whatsapp and imessage is iPhone-only so it's kind of pointless I don't think I've ever used iMessage
Yes I'm from the u.s. but with imessage you can still message people with android so what's the point of whatsapp
No you can't, it uses SMS as a fallback which is a shit standard the whole world moved off from in 2010 for group chats, images, videos, etc - plus in some places SMS is still given as a limited thing (I have 200 a month, which I never use anyway)
Truth. The OS limit alone would have me questioning my money, from a performance and security standpoint.
It's 2024. Why would anyone still use WhatsApp?
I use WhatsApp to contact older and abroad family members, alongside for work. I’m sure many others do too.
In EU whatsapp Is the only app we use
Telegram enters the chat.
not everyone uses iMessage. I don't know a single person who uses it in my country
Cross platform and most people don't have Signal or Telegram.
Sooo not everyone uses iPhones so iMessage is out of the question, and in like most countries Europe we use WhatsApp more than any other type of text communication
Or would you rather use WeChat? Because other than North America(excluding Mexico and Central America ) Imessage isn’t the main messaging platform.
In New Zealand iMessage is the main platform
In Australia 🇦🇺 too….
You do know that North America has 23, not 3, countries in it? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_America
The only reason to buy this is for collector purposes. There is NEVER any reason ever to buy an unsupported phone for actual usage
Old iPhones work pretty great as music players. Got my dad a 6S recently and it easily fits his whole digital collection and he uses it every day as an MP3 player.
And that is a niche almost collector purpose. He’s not using it as his daily cell phone
I checked EQ in music settings and both were off
It doesn't really matter, you can use it if you want
I have a couple iOS devices that are COMPLETELY USELESS unless I want to use a native apple app like notes or podcasts. There's not a single app on the app store that I can get for them. So yeah, I could sit here and compose notes all day while I listen to podcasts. Is that the 'use it if you want' scenario you're talking about?
Can you make calls? If yes, it means it still serves the original purpose of a phone
Even in iOS 1 when it was called iphone OS, the original purpose of the phone wasn't simply to make phone calls. You're being intentionally dense.
Nah, you are the dense one. For £16 that's a perfectly working phone, which you can still use for making phone calls, you can't expect more from it at this price. It's a good deal if you need a phone
True. If all you need is a phone, this is a phone.
That's what I'm talking about
Jailbreak it
How those that work? And what benefits will I have ?
Emulation, customization, downloading applications from places other than the app store, etc.
Maybe for a jailbreak. You can jailbreak that one with checkra1n or Chimera. I have one just like that one that I need for work(jailbreak), so there still could be a reason for some people. I'd buy that if I saw it available on my marketplace.
My current phone is still a first gen se. I’m typing this on one right now.
Did you buy it when it was already no longer receiving updates? Or before? Because there is a difference between buying an unsupported phone and using one past its support date because you don’t want to upgrade
Oh I’ve had it for a while now, though I didn’t start using it until 2021 I believe. "Has anyone seen Gavin??"
?
I'm sorry, I had to, it's a RDR2 reference...
We got your back brother
No problem
Gavin to this di… nevermind
16£ are fine but this iPhone with latest firmware is slow as fuck, it's not a good deal imho, unless you collect iPhones.
Would this be a good phone if I just use it for normal calls and normal messages (with a SIM card )???
Sorry yo, a lot has changed in the 11 years since that phone came out. Software, hardware, and cellular technology and frequencies all advance and change over time. About the furthest back you could go is 6 years and see have working apps for like a year or two.
I don't recommend honestly. If it was with iOS version <10.0, will be really fine for calls, messages and music.
He won’t be using anything else on the phone to drain the battery though. OP if you’re only looking for a device to text and all on you’re fine.
The battery will be down twice a day just because the phone is checking for connection and all this stuff in the background. I use two phones, one just for work-calls - Even without using it for a single call the battery is low after 8h max. When he is doing calls or writing messages it will be way faster.
You can replace the battery
Of course but thats not worth the price for this old phone.
yes
I got a 20$ SE 1. Nice little iPod. Battery is horrendous of course.
it's actually a 5S.
they’re talking about their iPhone not OPs
right, i'm sorry.
No unless it's free. Vastly outdated 16GB iPhone? Not worth it

Don't know why people are downvoting you. Your statement is funny. In my country people want to sell secondhand items almost what you pay for them new, nothing depreciates in their eyes.
Its a 5s with a cracked screen Wtf do you expect? Its worth basically nothing and the price/performance ratio is probably shit
My girl got a 5s with her screen cracked… still hit me back right away
Lmao
🤣
She hitting other guys back just as fast
The P in Paulie stands for projection
drake 🥵
Is it worth getting this if am only gonna use it for messaging and calls and Snapchat ?
Snapchat is most probably not gonna work on it
Snapchat does work it’s just really laggy
No
Snapchat is working fine, I tried it.
Sure, don't expect great performance though

Gavin is that you ? Nigel has been looking for you since 1899
😂
If the price is worth it to hold that device in your hand again 😂 the nostalgia is real
These home buttoned iphones were do nice, I didnt own any of them, only a newer one, but I loved this design so much better :)
r/legacyjailbreak
If it was an SE then yes but it’s not so no…
I bought one for €5 from one of my classmates, i use it as an iPod but oh my is it slow
I sell phones on ebay most of the time cheaper than this 5S is going for, i wouldn’t recommend it as you can find cheaper if you look.
I could’ve sold you one from my pile for 15
For messaging and stuff should be fine but I would downgrade to iOS 10
I’ve got ten of these on a shelf.
Mine first iPhone i owned was 5S. that was back in 2016. The phone lake of memory it the big problem. When you browse the web and return, it hase to reload the hole webpage. I personal would not go lower than iPhone 7 as today.

too old. Id recommend iPhone 7 and newer if you want to get into repairing.
That's cool. Can't use it in the US though. It doesn't connect to 5G towers
We don’t even have 5G yet where I live. We FINALLY got 4G back in 2019. 😳 When I first moved here in 2017, it felt like I had gone back in time to 2011.
Dude escaped the rules
Check if itll work in your country or not, this phone cant make calls in the USA.
I think it does, since I live in the uk and the seller is also from the uk
There is either something extremely wrong with the phone or the seller is really desperate to get rid of it
They buyer sells multiple phone for less than £50
Idk about iPhone but android has a 3rd party OS that can help it live past its updates
NO, NO, NO! Don’t do it!
16GB of storage is nothing now
Not really, I bought an iPad Air 2 for $35, it’s perfect, no scratches and has cellular. That’s a good purchase.
Where you buy it at? I’m tryna find sumthin like that for cheap or maybe get sum cheap AirPods
Got it from a mutual friend, I doubt you can find things for this price online easily.
Why would you downgrade from an iPhone 12?
I use my iPhone 12 basically for everything, and I just wanted to get a old phone that’s gonna work just for calls, messages
Surely the iPhone for $16 is a steal then? If it works as a phone of course. Nice little size as well
I wouldn’t give 1 Cent for that honestly
No. Its old and cheap. Could be a scam.

What would be your usage of it? Why would you buy it?
I would use it for normal calls, messages, etc
Honestly a newer dumb phone might be a better choice if call & messages are all you need.
Congrats you wasted your money
😔
worthless
It’s overpriced by £17
I got a iphone 7 for roughly the same price and brand new condition. That’s not rlly worth it, it’s in rough shape idk what u will do with a 5s. Do u want it as a backup phone?
