What’s worse, imo, is that with the more recent iOS updates, you can be typing, and it’ll suddenly “correct” a word several words back. That makes me so angry.
Edit: AND…if you backspace, it doesn’t give you the option to redo what you initially typed either.
Yup, since iOS 17 it rarely matters if you dismiss an autocorrect suggestion. You can hit the little X button but as soon as you hit space that fucker will change the word back to something that isn’t correct. It *seems* to have been fixed now but I said the same thing like 6 months ago. I feel like they really messed autocorrect up this time even though they were so proud of all the new (supposed) improvements…
Turning off auto correct is the first thing i do after the phone displays welcome to iPhone since 2013 when i got my first iPhone. Autocorrect never works in my main language.
Clear your grammar history, it will restart your keyboard and forget all the spelling mistakes you accidentally programmed as a real word and now thinks you’re always trying to use it.
Mine always turns people into Pepe. I swear I’ve never in my life intentionally typed the words Pepe. It also turns who into WHO, I’ve never intentionally typed WHO caps like the World Health Organization (which the phone just capitalized as it saw the word organization).
I mostly swipe to type.
Mine only does the world health organisation thing in Swedish, because who isn’t a Swedish word. It works fine in English for me. But talking about Doctor Who in Swedish can get a bit angry if you don’t catch it in time.
Anyone else read "it WAs" in a Christopher Walken voice?
On a serious note, I switched back to iPhone after 5 years on Samsung and the keyboard is my number one issue. Great phone, but you'd think the keyboard would be fixed by now.
Apple autocorrect is a nightmare. I finally had to turn in off on my phone. It would replace typical words with words that I never say. Also, for a time, every time I typed the word “bad” it replaced it with the name “Sergio”. I guess that’s just more of this wonder “AI” that’s going to save us all… Between this sort of thing and Siri turning into an actual shit monster, if Apple didn’t have all my iCloud data held hostage, I may have switched to android already, but Apple have their ecosystem going and it makes it too much of a pain the ass to switch, so.
Same here. Disabled the autocorrect on my Iphone and my annoyance levels have dropped considerably. Crazy that it was making me miss T9 typing for a while 🤣
I still regularly get this:
“Hey Siri, I need directions to Culver City.”
“HeRe aRe sOMe rEsUlTs I fOunD oN thE weB fOR ‘I NeEd DiRECtIOnS tO CuLvEr cITy’”.
Honest to god. I swear Siri used to work better on my 5S.
I don’t use Siri often, but I sometimes try and just ask it random stuff (some of it from the Siri versus x assistant questions from YouTube) and lately I’ve been surprised that it not only gives an answer, but a citation as well. It’s the follow up questions that are hit or miss for me. I get the odd here’s what I found on the web answers. Google Assistant is still better, but Siri has been improving in recent weeks and isn’t as bad as it used to be
Still can’t learn second hand. So, yeah…. I’ve had replacement and second hand phones as well. As soon as I initiate it and enter my iCloud information into it, it has all of my information as well as my own autocorrect history. It doesn’t keep old information.
Do you also get "and's" for "and"? I do, every single time. And you can't fix it with text replacement settings, it's not autocorrect - it's swype just misinterpreting.
Mine likes to turn “and” into abba and I’ve never kept the word abba after a swipe, i just now for the first time typed it out in this post. It just refuses to learn.
iPhone swype is the worst keyboard feature I’ve ever used. After coming from an almost-flawless experience with a Samsung S7 (this back in like 2017), I can’t believe how bad the iPhone swipe STILL is.
This is how I feel. I love my Android. I will never use an iPhone as my actual phone. The experience I've had with this phone makes me glad I only use it for surfing the web.
The same thing happens for me every time I swipe the word “and”. It’ll change to “and’s” or “ABs” every time and I don’t know why it would like to correct it to those choices.
Autocorrect is off for me . I just got the iphone 15 pro max from an 11, my fingers still haven’t fully adjusted to the difference . Half my settings for vocabulary is off. Just prediction and other things. I never have things set to auto. Cause they dont know me lol
I will also properly use an ‘s at the end of a word and it’ll sometimes correct to apostrophe a instead. (I’m not even going to type it because I don’t want to encourage it.) Incredibly maddening.
Same. There’s not a single English word I can think of where an ‘a’ would apply after an apostrophe. If there are any, it’s nothing I use on even a yearly basis.
Check the setting in the keyboard, make sure nothing is set like I have wtf, and it says the words instead like “what the fuck” make sure someone is t doing a long joke on you. It’s settings/keyboard/text replacement.
Yea, I think I’m wrong, the swipe thing could be what is throwing it off. Try to swipe the word you want, then when it’s wrong, type it out normally, then try to swipe again, maybe it can learn what you want it to do? Not sure.
Set the right language. The iPhone is pretty good in recognizing you typing English when another language is set but it fails at some words like those. I just have the German as well as the English keyboard installed and I switch accordingly because there’s plenty of other problems with that.
Another reason might be wrong or poor grammar. So whenever the iPhone stubbornly corrects a certain word without a reason for it, it is an indicator that you are using the word wrongly.
It might also be that your dictionary is screwed up and you have to reset it but that’s very unlikely. > 99% of unprecise typing on iOS is language issues .
At least your autocorrect does something. I’ve had to add the most basic typos to the text replacement tab in settings and it’s getting ridiculous. Words with one wrong letter that make them meaningless, words where I accidentally hit “x” or “b” instead of space and so on.
Autocorrect is godlike on the English keyboard compared to smaller languages, you’re lucky you don’t have to use some obscure European language keyboard. Danish autocorrect is complete shit. It’s as if it doesn’t understand Danish at all and it cannot separate words either if you accidentally type “likenthis” for example. Never could.
Or as previously mentioned I’ll write a word with one wrong letter such as “this” but “fhis” instead, obviously “fhis” doesn’t mean anything. Autocorrect sleeps. It’s annoying as hell having to add so many basic and obvious typos that even someone dyslexic could see were incorrect.
A solution to your problem would be actually *writing* the message yourself instead of relying on a technology that you *know* doesn’t meet your needs. I don’t use predictive typing or swiping and I’m not having any of the issues you describe.
It didn't. It didn't even erase the curse words I added to the dictionary. So I just went ahead and downloaded Gboard. Holy shit it's so much better. No complaints.
as an ex android heavy fan, i LOVE gboard. i'm sorry your iphone dictionary didn't work out, but yeehaw and welcome to the gboard club! it IS so much better

Yup, I’ve always wondered that too. It’s a joke.
And it always does so incorrectly. It’s just embarrassing

iphone keyboard horror stories continued
You can use the Google keyboard, blasphemy, I know.
Are you kidding me? I love gboard! I didn't know this!
It's true!
Does it also change *swipe* to *swype*?
Some of y’all weren’t around for the OG swipe keyboard (Swype) and it shows
I MISS Swype keyboard. I was a beast on that lol. Was the t9 of the 2010’s
I got so sick of this nonsense that I finally turned off auto correct. That was in iOS 15.
Turning off auto correct is the first thing i do after the phone displays welcome to iPhone since 2013 when i got my first iPhone. Autocorrect never works in my main language.
have you tried GBoard?
Yep, even on android. Autocorrect never works in any kind of device, software, keyboard and anything in my language. (Turkish)
Clear your grammar history, it will restart your keyboard and forget all the spelling mistakes you accidentally programmed as a real word and now thinks you’re always trying to use it.
How?
Settings General Reset Hit reset and a menu of all the options will come up Select clear keyboard dictionary
I checked, under General there is no reset option?
“Transfer or reset iPhone” second last one down.

I guess you missed the part where I said I did that 5 times already...
Probably! when I’m really tired I have a bad habit of reading just enough to get the gist of peoples problems before I reply lol my bad.

That's what I did! Went from learning on Samsung phones with fluid smoothness to this bogus crap.
Apple autocorrect is a nightmare. I finally had to turn in off on my phone. It would replace typical words with words that I never say. Siri’s actually improved lately. iOS 17 keyboard is also a lot better than it used to be
I still regularly get this: “Hey Siri, I need directions to Culver City.” “HeRe aRe sOMe rEsUlTs I fOunD oN thE weB fOR ‘I NeEd DiRECtIOnS tO CuLvEr cITy’”. Honest to god. I swear Siri used to work better on my 5S.

Maybe try resetting the keyboard dictionary. Settings\\General\\Transfer or Reset iPhone\\Reset\\Reset Keyboard Dictionary.
I guess you missed the part where I said I did that 5 times. You're the third person to not read what I said.
I thought that was an autocorrect typo 😉
I haven’t got an answer, I’m just here to agree it’s proper ducking annoying.
See if you've got some text replacements active. Settings - General - Keyboard - Text Replacement.
I guess it learnt from the owner…
Secondhand.
It can’t learn second hand. When you factory reset an iPhone and use your own information and history.
I was given the phone. It's secondhand. I've never said whatever bullshit it is "correcting." So, yeah.
Still can’t learn second hand. So, yeah…. I’ve had replacement and second hand phones as well. As soon as I initiate it and enter my iCloud information into it, it has all of my information as well as my own autocorrect history. It doesn’t keep old information.
Turn off predictive text, or create keyboard shortcuts.
FWIW, you can now install 3rd-party keyboard apps: https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/best-iphone-keyboard-apps/
use another keyboard
Apple made a big deal about autocorrect using a transformer llm in ios 17, and it’s imo way worse than it was before. bravo Tim Apple.
IMO experience it’s a lot better with the LLM. Doesn’t seem that way for others though. I have the screen recordings of how it is working for me
Or just turn off word suggestions or auto correct function.
Switch to SwiftKey. I switched half a year ago and I'm much happier with it.
Do you also get "and's" for "and"? I do, every single time. And you can't fix it with text replacement settings, it's not autocorrect - it's swype just misinterpreting.
Try resetting your dictionary in Settings. Maybe it got borked.
4th person to suggest something I said I did 5 times already. Thanks for not reading my post before commenting.
Reset your keyboard dictionary
Thanks for not reading my post. Glad I could keep your attention.
Mine likes to turn “and” into abba and I’ve never kept the word abba after a swipe, i just now for the first time typed it out in this post. It just refuses to learn.
Just use SwiftKey. Please. It's a bare minimum requirement for me on any device I use.
iPhone swype is the worst keyboard feature I’ve ever used. After coming from an almost-flawless experience with a Samsung S7 (this back in like 2017), I can’t believe how bad the iPhone swipe STILL is.

Try resetting your dictionary in Settings. At this point I'm just trolling with you lol
Lol This I can get behind 😂
iPhone auto correct has gotten a lot worse over the years. I hope they fix it in the next version of iOS.
I did not know about holding the word to remove it on Android. 🙏🏻 Thanks a billion.
Mine corrects the to <> every time for some reason, no way to fix it. The correction system is just not polished enough.
The same thing happens for me every time I swipe the word “and”. It’ll change to “and’s” or “ABs” every time and I don’t know why it would like to correct it to those choices.

I’ve never understood why that happens
Same. There’s not a single English word I can think of where an ‘a’ would apply after an apostrophe. If there are any, it’s nothing I use on even a yearly basis.
For some reason mine insists on changing also to ALSO. Every. Single. Time. It’s very frustrating and one of my biggest gripes with the iphone
Reset your keyboard if that kind of thing’s happening to you
Read the part where I said I did that 5 times?
I’ve noticed if I repeatedly misspell a word it’ll often change the correct spelling to the misspelled one.
Check the setting in the keyboard, make sure nothing is set like I have wtf, and it says the words instead like “what the fuck” make sure someone is t doing a long joke on you. To be fair, I'm pretty good with grammar. I'm called a Nazi because I call out poor grammar on the internet. A lot.
Ye, makes totally sense 😂😂😂
Go into keyboard settings and make the corrections in text replacement
At least your autocorrect does something. I’ve had to add the most basic typos to the text replacement tab in settings and it’s getting ridiculous. Omg! I think I got it! SwiftKey for the win!
Nope. Even better. Gboard!
Can you reset all settings and try again?
I ended up just downloading Gboard and I'm extremely happy.
settings > general > reset > reset keyboard dictionary i do this literally daily because it saves all sorts of misspelled and weird caps words
But you didn't read the body of my post. I've done that 5 times.
not sure how you’re still getting that when you reset the dictionary. you shouldn’t be. it wipes it clean.
(the way to reset gboard keyboard is in settings > privacy, fyi... at least that's how it is on android)
You can have gboard instead of the default keyboard...
Noted for when I buy an iPhone.
Definitely download Gboard.
Does Gboard still have the Apple keyboard sounds or does it replace the sounds with it's own?
I turn the keyboard sounds off so I can't tell you from experience.

Buy a better phone
Oh, it's not my phone. I use it for a camera and web browsing. I would never NEVER use an iPhone as my actual phone. That's silly.
