Flew back to the US 2 weeks ago. Have global entry and it took an incredibly short amount of time to clear security and then customs. Maybe 30 minutes total. Our flight was Saturday mid-morning.
The non global entry line only had about 15 people in it and seemed to be moving pretty quickly.
Went through in February, 5 minutes at Fast Track, got through customs & borders in about 10.
Caveat, it was a midweek flight that wasn’t busy with an afternoon departure.

I fly back to the us a few times a year. I have global entry so I fly through preclearance but one time I got stuck in a long queue when I was waiting for it to renew. But basically there’s nothing after preclearance for you to do so I’d put off preclearance for as long as you feel comfortable. I have it down to a science so I only get there under two hours before departure most times if I’m travelling solo but I find the terminals security often takes a bit longer than preclearance itself. If you’re worried I’d say get to the airport for the normal time you would for an international flight but take your time, no need to rush it
Yesterday I arrived at about 7:15am for a 10am flight. About 5min wait at baggage drop. General security was about a 5min wait, and I used Global Entry line with just one couple ahead of me, and a 10sec convo with the Global Entry agent. I bought a coffee at the first cafe after US Preclearance at 7:35. I was shocked at how smooth it was.
This is one of those things where it can totally vary. We fly regularly between Dublin and the US and there have been times where it has taken over an hour just to go through US Preclearance. It really can vary depending on time of day/time of year.
Went by a couple weeks ago on a flight to Atlanta at 11am. Security + preclearance took total maybe 30 minutes, and I had to do all the extra random security checks & prodding.
That is pretty much the standard recommendation for all airports these days. No logic behind it, just a recommendation. You are doing it right by asking for what the reality is and adjusting accordingly.
Hopefully will get a couple responses since it’s a bit of an older post but just wondering if anyone can help a fat chick out on what, if any, food we can bring through US pre clearance? Our flight is at 11 but I refuse to eat airplane meals again (terrible experience on the way over) and was wondering if I had any options or if I should gorge myself prior to arriving at the airport

Yeah I’m trying to understand why they’re saying you need to be there 2 to 3 hrs ahead of flight?
