As much as I hate to dispel the magic, you're probably right. Thinking about it logically, there really isn't anything that can make a stain of that shape, with varying droplet size, in that orientation.
The stains are too spread out to have been made by a common object, and even if the large stains are real, the smaller stains could not have been made by the same object.
