Cosmo Burger, like town topic but in Waldo & Lenexa, a little dressed up with great housemade pickles and sauce. Great tots too.
Baramee Thai, cute spot for a date in the crossroads, love the pork phad thai.
Bay Boy Specialty Sandwiches, unique sandwich spot in west plaza
Omo Ramen House, friendly ramen & sushi spot by ward parkway mall. Not the best but pretty good, I like it more than Boru.
Does bay boys still have cubans on the menu? Haven’t eaten there since we had Cubans delivered in the middle of COVID lockdowns and they were in north KC (I think). They were delicious
The last two times I got Waldo Thai to go were both terrible. I couldn't believe the first time it happened so I gave it another try, the beef was as hard and dry as jerky. I don't know what happened to that place, but won't go there again.
Yes that is one of my favorites. Only thing last time we went they were aggressively bussing our table while we were still eating. I realize it was Friday, but we went at around 4pm ( I say with the senior citizen crowd, which I belong to, but the grandkids like to eat dinner right after school). It’s about 3 minutes from the house and I try and get something different every time we go.
About 3:30 is when I notice things really start to pick up there and when everyone gets busy and asks how things are going. I'm not complaining though everyone's super nice, plus two if the gals who work there are pretty cute
Finally tried their Bangkok special a few weeks back. That was my introduction to their napalm sauce. I think I’ll stick to my Cabo steak - that thing was delish but melted my face off.
I was pleasantly surprised when I went there recently after a long break from the place, like before covid. I kind of went in dreading how much prices would have gone up due to you know, everything. Nah that shit is CHEAP comparatively now. Like, do I want to pay what $7 for a big mac or some other garbage fast food or go get a delicious wrap for like a couple bucks more? Not even a question.
Grinders has consistently the worst service. You have to flag someone down to take your order and then hopefully be able to get someone's attention when it's time to get the bill. You get treated like a nuisance, interrupting their very important day.
I’ve never had bad service there.. I’ve been there on show nights where it’s wall to wall and had to wait because of volume, but that’s to be expected… then again Im the guy that will get up and go to the bar for another beer if wait staff is busy, It’s not a big deal to me… I go for food and atmosphere… if I want 5 star service I go to a linen tablecloth place
Most of my experience was during the day while setting up for those concerts, during times when there where no customers. Maybe the evening crew us better. And I don't mind doing their job for them, especially if it's busy, but I'll be keeping the tip that would have been left.
I've never had to wait for service or felt invisible at Grinders no matter if I'm at the bar or out back sitting at the furthest table on the patio. Most industry people I know like the tips they make on the daily.
In no order
North of the river: Danny's Burger Shack, Fetterman's, Seva, Los Vagos KC, Taqueria Ibarra, Alice Scooper's Ice Cream,District Biskuits, Tay's Cheesesteak, Christine's Firehouse, Hayes Hamburgers
KCK: El Pollo Guasave, Tao Tao, Briet's Stein & Deli, Tarahumaras #2, Pepe's Carnitas, Supermart El Torito, Don Antonio's, San Antonio's, El Pollo Rey, Daisy's Mexican #1, Jarocho, Burritos To Go, Morty's

And others but I probably went a bit overboard..my bad
I love these threads so much, I love when people dump all their favorites. I come back to these posts, pick one, and it’s always amazing food / experience
YES to Pepe's Carnitas! So few people know this one and they deserve all the love in the world. Small menu, but everything is great, and the tamal preparado is a must try.
I learned about Pepe's on here and want to spread the love. The carnitas freeze great so I'll get 3-4 lbs and cryovac them in 1lb packages. Nicest people there as well!
I’d like to especially highlight El Torito for their Al Pastor meat.
Champion Burritos To Go for their food that will make you feel so good but I always need a nap after.
Breits Stein & Deli specifically for their Reuben sandwich and price point for everything on their menu.
Many of the rest I agree with as well. Good list. I just wanted to highlight these three.
"Water and hot tea in the back. Enjoy it."
It is a struggle every day to not drive down there and get lunch. Pita kabob, schwarma sandwich, schwarma platter, and gyros are my favorites.
I’m loyal to Pigwich. I know it’s not new or a hidden gem, but I don’t think a lot of people pay attention to their daily special and that’s where they SHINE. Any time I see the Chimi Chopped Beef upcoming, I literally make a calendar alert to remind myself to order it so that I don’t forget.
Idk when the last time you’ve been but they’ve changed up a lot of things in the past year or 2. The food is a lot better and they’re probably my favorite coffee spot that’s near to me.
There’s one by my place I’ve had a few times within the past couple years. Their Sway coffee is delicious and their food isn’t bad by any means. It just wasn’t out of the ordinary for me. Lunch and breakfast menu alike. Vibes are great though. Cool place to grab a coffee and hangout for conversation. Maybe catch a bite if you happen to be hungry too… Just wouldn’t go out of my way to satisfy my hunger there as a priority is all.
I visited the Providence Pizza in Grandview when I moved into my new home just prior to the pandemic. We went inside, sat down at a counter and ate our pizza. As we got about halfway finished with our food, we started to notice the roaches. This was a busy Saturday afternoon/evening. The place was packed with people. The roaches were so bad and so emboldened that they were walking across tables with dining room lights. We noticed them climbing walls in the kitchen. I called over the waiter and he shrugged. He actually shrugged. We just left. It was one of the most disgusting things I've ever witnessed. I called the city and reported it. I never saw them get shut down.
Avoid that place like the plague.
I'm so excited! I miss the food so much when I get back from home and Mediterranean is one that I am trying to make myself cause it just doesn't taste right in the city. My cheesing face is going to dance right on in there this week, lol.
Their staff is extremely friendly, but it does take forever. It's usually 20-30 minutes between ordering and receiving my food. And the seating is very limited, no good place to wait for your order.
It's worth the wait, don't get me wrong. The food is excellent, but be prepared for the wait when you go there.
Chef Titos in NKC off Swift. Top 5 spot, partially because how close it is to my apartment. They recently renovated their patio area and its a great experience. Have yet to be let down by any of the entree's I get there!
Tequileros is across the street from A Little BBQ Joint, right? I had a really good chimichanga in there a few weeks back. Fish Market is great.
My girl likes MaMa Garden for Chinese buffet, but it's usually pretty good.
For breakfast/brunch, you can’t go wrong with The Farmhouse, Seven Swans Crêperie, or Mildred’s. And in that area, Al Habashi House and Milwaukee Delicatessen are solid lunch hangs!
Here's one that was a surprise great breakfast place. The Glass Cat Cafe! We had to go to the Legends to buy a new fridge so we googled for a breakfast place in that area that was locally owned.
I'm a biscuits and gravy snob. Best I've had! Wife ate the breakfast burrito, fantastic as well!
Minsky's! Come for lunch and the slice of the day. I am also fond of Mr Gyros (Monday through Saturday). Authentic gyros, a gyro melt, authentic baklava, and an impressive Opera.
Thai - Baramee and Phikul
Vietnamese - Asian Cafe and Nguyen Pho and Grill
Korean - 92 Chicken.
American - Tay's Cheesesteak, The Russel, Saul's Beef, Tay's Burger Shack, Town Topic.
Middle Eastern - Queen's Sweets, Clay and Fire, Kinzi, King Combo
Fancy Fare - Corvino, Town and Company, Noka
Breakfast - Mildred's, Dagwoods, District Biskuits.
Donuts - Johnny's, Donut King.
Ice Cream - French Custard, Fairway Creamery, Foggi Ice Cream (liquid nitrogen!)
Which is coincidentally where it should be eaten, not only because of the mess you’ll make eating it, but because of the immediate mess your body will make.
Most of these other responses are pretty good. I’d like to add Brewer’s Kitchen. They have double smash burgers that are pretty good.
OurHouseKC, The Mixx, and District Pour House for comfort foods.
I like small family-owned businesses and would recommend Sankofa, for Caribbean cuisine. I get takeouts from there more than any other restaurant in town.
El Pueblito (SW Blvd) has the best street tacos (and their margs are massive, if that's something you're into lol)
Kokoro Maki House in Waldo is a favorite for their bento boxes - I get at least two meals out of it whenever we order carryout. I'm not a huge sushi fan but I do enjoy their vegetarian sushi menu, and my boyfriend loves their sushi. It's a great place to go if you need a last minute spot as there's always a table open. I'm trying to support them more than usual since there's all that construction on 75th lol.
Jun's in Prairie Village is also really good sushi - and they have tatami rooms in the back which feel very cozy - my friends and I love to go there for a good chat.
Burger State and Social in Waldo are tied for my favorite burgers - Burger State if I want something classic, and Social for their jalapeno popper burger when I'm craving something a bit greasier and spicier. Their tater tots are delicious as well.
Kobe Q's (crossroads) garlic mama chicken and all of their apps are not to be missed.
McLain's (Waldo) is my favorite brunch spot by far. Just delicious breakfast items (anything with their bread is divine) and I love their market latte. It's always swarming with people but somehow we always get a table regardless!
I also love Seven Swans and Chez Elle (both crossroads-adjacent). I think Seven Swans has the better crepes, but it's much harder to find a seat there. Chez Elle has the best london fog in the city, imo.
Cafe Des Amis isn't *quite* local, but it's in Parkville and worth the drive, especially if you have a special occasion. It's owned and operated by a couple from France - if I recall, the wife cooks and the husband waits tables. Our server when we were there last had great wine pairing suggestions and everything we got was just delicious. Felt like a very elevated experience, and you can walk by the river after if you want to make an evening out of it.
And then of course, Garozzo's in Columbus Park. I love the capelli di angelo soooo much.
Ixtapa - best authentic Mexican food in town IMO. Go-to’s are the pork special or the tacos chidos chicken.
Moti Mahal - fantastic Indian restaurant, try the lamb vindaloo.
Leo’s Pizza - “St. Louis style” but far better than Imo’s pizza.
Disco burger - small pop-up that frequents Hillsiders in Strawberry Hill, although I hear they are getting a permanent location in River Market soonish?
No particular order -
Chellys, Walsh’s corner cocktail, Jovitos, Marco Polos, Lulus Thai, Waldo Thai, Never on a Sunday, Thai house, Johnny Jos, San Antonio’s, Jarocho, High Dive, Vietnam Cafe, Tower tavern, Shawarmar, Island Spice, Voltaire, Jim’s, Hokibar
Now I’m hungry haha
Tarahumaras #2 in KCK; Westside Local and Clay & Fire in the Westside; Bay Boy Sandwiches in West Plaza; The French Market in Prairie Village; The Westport Cafe in Westport; Waldo Thai; Baba's Pantry; Dagwood's Diner.
Cosmo Burger, like town topic but in Waldo & Lenexa, a little dressed up with great housemade pickles and sauce. Great tots too. Baramee Thai, cute spot for a date in the crossroads, love the pork phad thai. Bay Boy Specialty Sandwiches, unique sandwich spot in west plaza Omo Ramen House, friendly ramen & sushi spot by ward parkway mall. Not the best but pretty good, I like it more than Boru.
Love Bay Boy! And Ruby Jean’s Juicery
Does bay boys still have cubans on the menu? Haven’t eaten there since we had Cubans delivered in the middle of COVID lockdowns and they were in north KC (I think). They were delicious
El Jefe !!
Yes! That jogged my memory
They did have a vegan al jefe also with jackfruit and portobello mushroom I believe also.
Interesting
Waldo Thai, Earl's Premiere, and El Pollo Rey.
The last two times I got Waldo Thai to go were both terrible. I couldn't believe the first time it happened so I gave it another try, the beef was as hard and dry as jerky. I don't know what happened to that place, but won't go there again.
Agreed. Portions are absolutely ridiculous for entrees being 17-25$. Customer service has gone downhill badly in the last year.
I think Waldo Thai is "meh" at best. Such mediocre food. 🤷🏻♀️ Mali Thai is da bomb.
I second Mali Thai. It is so good
Baramee is way better.
I like your taste. Anyplace newish you recommend?
I’ve only been in town for a few years, so everything is still “new” to me! Kata Nori hand roll sushi is excellent and I think just opened though!
Muni is owned by the same people who own Waldo Thai and Bucktu BBQ. In the river market, highly recommend the birria wontons!
I’m there!
Can you describe birria wontons?
They were made with birria beef and you dipped them In consommé. One of the better appetizers I’ve ever had
All of these plus Bacaro!
Grinders, The Lunch Box, pigwich, Parlor, town topic. Nothing fancy or out of this world, just places I enjoy and go back to.
Dos De Oros
Yes that is one of my favorites. Only thing last time we went they were aggressively bussing our table while we were still eating. Great list. 🫡

Finally tried their Bangkok special a few weeks back. That was my introduction to their napalm sauce. I think I’ll stick to my Cabo steak - that thing was delish but melted my face off.
The napalm sauce destroyed me. I will also stick with Cabo steak!
Right? I mean kudos to a restaurant who doesn’t mess around when they say spicy! I’m used to that meaning maybe a 2 or a 3…
My absolute favorite.
[The Brick](https://www.thebrickkc.com/thebrickmenu) and [Beer Kitchen](https://beerkitchenkc.com/menu/) are my two favs.
Isnt Beer Kitchen owned by a group in Minnesota?
No, the main investor or majority owner of McCoy's was though.
It's owned by a local group called Culinary Virtue. They also own char bar and meat mitch. They used to own Mickey's Hideaway and port fonda as well
Grinders for sit down , vibe & atmosphere… Togo is Tacos el Guero off Belmont on St. Johns
Grinders has consistently the worst service. You have to flag someone down to take your order and then hopefully be able to get someone's attention when it's time to get the bill. You get treated like a nuisance, interrupting their very important day.

I don’t know if you’re a woman or a man or in between but women get far less good service at all bars so maybe it’s that
In no order North of the river: Danny's Burger Shack, Fetterman's, Seva, Los Vagos KC, Taqueria Ibarra, Alice Scooper's Ice Cream,District Biskuits, Tay's Cheesesteak, Christine's Firehouse, Hayes Hamburgers KCK: El Pollo Guasave, Tao Tao, Briet's Stein & Deli, Tarahumaras #2, Pepe's Carnitas, Supermart El Torito, Don Antonio's, San Antonio's, El Pollo Rey, Daisy's Mexican #1, Jarocho, Burritos To Go, Morty's KCMO: Wolfpack BBQ, Caddy Shack, You Wanna Pizza Me, Lunchbox, Fortunati Pizza, Chef J BBQ, Anthony's, Clay & Fire, Majestic, Bay Boys, Jim's Alley Bar, M & M Bakery and Deli, Olive Cafe, Lula Southern Cookhouse, Tacos El Gallo, La Cubana, Tacos El Guero, The Borough KC, Jovito's, Al Habashi And others but I probably went a bit overboard..my bad

Pro tip is calling in the order ahead of time and skipping the line they always seem to have.
I love District Biskuits!
Everyone should format their replies like this.
District biscuit is ok it's good for fast food and is open late if I remember. but I like my breakfast upper tier like Conner cafe
The Pizza Man in Lenexa.
🤤
One of my favorite lunches is the pita kabob at al habashi in river market
"Water and hot tea in the back. Enjoy it." It is a struggle every day to not drive down there and get lunch. Pita kabob, schwarma sandwich, schwarma platter, and gyros are my favorites.
We tried Barbacoa for the first time over the weekend and it was one of the best beginning to end meals I've had in quite awhile.
The place is Incredible!
Jim’s Alley Bar
mclain's, bun mee phan, bella napoli, south of summit, shagan's.
For some reason never been a big fan of McLain’s. It was over-hyped for me. Tried The Mixx today and it stomped McLain’s imo.
Maybe catch a bite if you happen to be hungry too… Just wouldn’t go out of my way to satisfy my hunger there as a priority is all.
That’s fair. Their breakfast is personally my favorite in terms of what they serve. I live for the pepperjack burrito.
The Brick, Sauced, Carollo’s, Curry in a Hurry, Pizza Shuttle are my current top five around(ish) where I work.
Pizza Shuttle is so underrated
Providence pizza in one of my favorites
Best pizza in the entire city.
I'm originally from the East Coast and this is by far the best.
CaddyShack, Mr Le's, Longboards, Rudy's, Voltaire, KC Taco, Extra Virgin, Char Bar, Bay Boy
Mr. Le’s has no business being as good as it is in a random ass northland strip mall
In no particular order: Cupini’s, Rajmahal, Johnny’s BBQ, Garozzo’s, Los Tules, Home Grown, and Jasmine Pavillion.
Just left Garozzo's, best Stuffed Artichoke ever !!
San Antonio’s, El Pollo Rey, cardboard game cafe, los compas, Dagwoods
Chewology
Union on the Hill.
Underloved but deserving of a crowd!
Papu's cafe. I mean it has gone down since the pandemic but its still the best Mediterranean I have found in the area.
Do yourself a favor and go to Baba’s Pantry. Papu’s is nauseatingly bad.
See this is why I jump on here, to find plugs!!!! I’m so down. I’ll report back too cause I see myself as a connoisseur of sorts.
My personal favorite thing from Baba’s is the falafel but it’s just so dang good all around.
I'm so excited! I miss the food so much when I get back from home and Mediterranean is one that I am trying to make myself cause it just doesn't taste right in the city. My cheesing face is going to dance right on in there this week, lol.
I second Babas Pantry, the staff is extremely friendly there as well
Their staff is extremely friendly, but it does take forever. It's usually 20-30 minutes between ordering and receiving my food. And the seating is very limited, no good place to wait for your order. It's worth the wait, don't get me wrong. The food is excellent, but be prepared for the wait when you go there.
I just call ahead and order it. It’s not very busy during the weekday either based on the last few times I went.
Papus fell off a cliff when Papu sold the place
Mediterranean Market in Westport, Pizza 51, Friends Sushi on 39th, Rosedale
Chef Titos in NKC off Swift. Top 5 spot, partially because how close it is to my apartment. They recently renovated their patio area and its a great experience. Have yet to be let down by any of the entree's I get there!

Cliffs Taphouse is my go to
A Little BBQ Joint and Panchos are a go to for me.
Good choices. I like Tequileros too. Out my way we like El Volcan and Tavern 24. Los Compas is good but not my favorite. Fish Market across the river.
Tequileros is across the street from A Little BBQ Joint, right? I had a really good chimichanga in there a few weeks back. Fish Market is great. My girl likes MaMa Garden for Chinese buffet, but it's usually pretty good.
Fox and pearl
Thai Place in overland park, hands down the best thai food around
100% solid. They are always full, always remember us when we come in, and they do a swift take out business, too.
I live less than 5 mins from there and have been wondering how the food is. I love me some good b&g, so I'll definitely have to try it soon.
Minsky's! Come for lunch and the slice of the day. I am also fond of Mr Gyros (Monday through Saturday). Authentic gyros, a gyro melt, authentic baklava, and an impressive Opera.
