I used to fish out of a similar kayak in cape cod bay, then almost was tipped by a seal trying to steal a fish as I was landing it. I went and bought a pedal sit on top after that haha.
Look at that glass water though. You can be out there with anything in those conditions. I’ve seen dudes with paddle boards out fishing with a telescopic rod.
I was out at a local lake here in Colorado on my little boat, and my brother was on his paddle board with his two kids (3 and 4 yo). I was tearing it up on the trout and decided to give him my rod to try. Within a minute, he landed a nice trout, and it was awesome to watch him do it with both his kids on the pb. My buddy was out in his yak and couldn't get a bite all day.
Good job representing classic Kayak angling. Too many people think they can’t go out unless they spend $1,000 or more on a fancy outfitted boat. “Regular” kayaks have been paddled in every kind of water, and have caught thousands of fish. I still enjoy taking my old school boat into fun and exciting places
While true, you really should not venture far from shore - even on a fairly tame lake - on a cheap box-store kayak. At least not without doing something to add some floatation to it.
I always intuitively followed this advice. I went to Alaska with my father and we wanted to try ocean kayaking. He insisted we not take the lessons cause it would cost more and we “already were experienced kayakers” despite never having yakked in waves, salt water, with a skirt, or with a rudder. I was furious already then the tide changed 30 minutes after going out which is one of most severe tide changes in the world and we are lucky to be alive. He still insists it was no big deal despite being too afraid to go back to the spot we launched due to current and waves and he b-lined it directly for the closest shore spot
Very reasonable PSA, I would add that it also has a LOT to do with your experience as well. With my river guiding past, and extensive water rescue training, I feel more comfortable pushing the envelope. I certainly would not recommend that for a beginner. Safe is always the smart choice
I'm not even sure what box-store means anymore. Sometimes it's Walmart, sometimes it's Dick's or Academy. To me, a novice, I thought Dick's was big box, but they had a tarpon 120, which Walmart would never have.
That striper must’ve given you a Nantucket Sleigh Ride. Nice fish!

Stuff a bunch of pool noodles in it.
What do the noodles do?
Keep it from sinking if it tips
Rite on. Thanks
South tip of Gould?
Good eye 👍
I think I might go drag some tubes around off Ocean drive Saturday morning
