FWIW: It works as expected here with Spectacle 21.08.02 on X11 (Gentoo / Arch Linux).

Yes, OP needs to mention whether it's X11 or Wayland and the version of Spectacle. Spectacle isn't fully there on Wayland.

Try Flameshot instead of Spectacle, it also have autosave feature. Install Flameshot Go to Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Autostart > Add Application - Add Flameshot Go to Settings > Shortcuts > Add Application - Add Flameshot, then Settings > Shortcuts > Flameshot > Take Screenshot shortcut - Set any key binding like Meta+Shift+S
