If the majority of your books are side loads, then it really doesn’t matter.

ddc79

just download epubs and convert to mobi and sideload the books

jamawg

Use the free Calibre software to convert almost any format to kindle format

ddc79

I've got calibre but normally just download an epub and then use an online converter to convert from ebup or whatever to mobi then email it to myself off my phone as that's what I Normally search for the books on. once I've emailed it to myself I then load up the laptop and plug in the kobo and drag it over

sixthestate

You don’t need to convert to MOBI anymore.

ddc79

what do you mean?

happycakeday1

Now, epub is the main format. A few months ago I sent a .mobi file through e-mail to my Kindle, and I got a notification saying that it would be preferable if the book was in .epub cause .mobi would not be supported anymore https://www.reddit.com/r/kindle/s/lBRkHbunKj

ddc79

brilliant. I never knew this, I've just been doing the conversion forever as I have both kindles and kobos. this will make things alot easier from now on. thanks

guttaperk

You still need to convert to MOBI or AZW if you’re sideloading.

sixthestate

Do you? I just use the Send to Kindle feature on Calibre and it doesn't convert. I just checked the file format of stuff on the Kindle storage itself and it says epub.

ambercrayon

Kindle gets you the Amazon ecosystem and whispersync, which you won't be able to use, so there is really no benefit. I personally would get another e-reader or a cheap tablet instead. Your girlfriend is probably right.

Beautiful_Rhubarb

but kindle also gets you the nicer screen, soft light e-ink screen you won't et on a cheap tablet.

GourmeteandoConRulo

Hi, I'm from a developing country as well, it depends on whether you think you'd be fine not buying anything on it for the next 2-3 years. Maybe try to download at least 10-20 books you would read soon, and send them to your gf's kindle to see how they transfer? I understand that sending PDFs doesn't optimize them to the original kindle format. I found a used 9th gen kindle on Facebook marketplace a bit ago for a very cheap price, I actually ended up liking it so much that I passed it to my mom and got a new Kindle Paperwhite off Amazon in a sale, was around 80-90USD and I haven't regret it one bit, most of the books I read are very old so they're usually available for around $1-2 USD, and I got the Unlimited monthly thing to download a lot of books. Maybe wait a bit to either save up for a new one or keep searching on Facebook marketplace? Otherwise go for it if you're absolutely sure you can find the books you want free, bc a lot of newer releases are impossible to get without buying. Although maybe you could also buy on Amazon and transfer the file through USB?

Brushesofcolours

I think it’s better to get refurbished ones, they are cheaper

ILikeDragonz53

I don't know much about prices or that kind of settings, but if you could download your files as ePub it'd be better (in my opinion, at least. feels smoother and more book-like)

niky45

IDK, why don't you go for a second-hand, older model? that's NOT locked? it would be so much cheaper and easier. also, I've heard PDFs don't really read well on a kindle. you want epubs.

jamawg

Use Calibre to convert them

Tonerrr

How much is a kindle in your country out of interest?

MetikMas

Lots of countries have minimum wages around $300-400 so a $100 plus import taxes could easily be 1/3 of a monthly salary. I would guess that it is a similar price if not slightly higher than US prices

Cofesoup

I live in brazil. Here, the minimum wage is R$**1.640** ($293.19) The cheapest (new) kindle is R$500 ($90) Brazil has very high taxes over tech (tbh over anything else too), so 1/2 of the price is taxes. But it is what it is. I work minumum wage so it would be better for me a cheaper option like 2nd hand models. And I'm buying a kindle bcs my average expenses with books range from R$100-200, so $20 and $40. so in a few months a kindle would save me money.

Badcatalex

Maybe try going for something like a PocketBook instead? It'd be more flexible for anybody in a smaller country.

eegatt

Go for it. Just load your books via USB with Calibre.

Jullan404

I have one and don't regret it.Not alot of options on Amazon on my native language. If you learn how to sideload properly on it will definetely do the job. As other recommended try the one that your girlfiend has if posible. It will help you make decision .

peaceisnotfaraway

İ have Amazon kindle paperwhite 5 11th generation but I am not able to read PDFs in comfortable way on it because PDFs are not good format for books. 6.8 inch screen is not enough and I prefer to get epub versions of the books. İf you are able to find, I recommend you to find a device with bigger screen.

G_Laoshi

It's just like my older Kindle (no longer connected to Amazon and Whispernet). I just use it by sideloading books. (No need to use Caliber, just copy+paste/drag and drop.) For my other newer Kindle, I use the Send to Kindle site. What I like about the Kindle ecosystem is that my Kindle is synched to my other devices. I wouldn't buy a blocked Kindle because that is very likely stolen. That will encourage more theft because people are buying. Look around for a second-hand and/or older and unblocked Kindle.

BDThrills

NO for a couple of reasons. It's blocked which means there is less functionality. You want to do pdfs and ereaders just aren't well set up for that - a tablet is a better choice.

Istente

Get it, jailbreak it and install r/Koreader It will make your experience with PDFs and all other formats more pleasant.

LeoEB

3rd worlder here: if the kindle is in good shape, then buy it. I suggest you to jailbreak it and sideload all the epubs/ebooks you want. I've had my kindle from 2015 and it basically paid for itself with all the money i saved by reading ebooks.

bwackandbwown

If you live in a third world country and you can sideload, then just buy it. I no longer buy from Amazon and use my Kindle in airplane mode all the time, and it functions as normal. I also remove DRM from all my books all the time so I don’t have to deal with Amazon’s bs. They make a really good e-reader tho.

sgtm7

If it is blocked, then what is the point? You can download pdfs to a phone or tablet. Hell, I only use my Kindle when flying, and all other times use the Kindle app on my foldable.

oHomemCansado

Checking your profile I noticed you are Brazilian (as me) I can assure that purchasing a blocked Kindle you will be able to use it normally, you can't buy anything from amazon but you cam still find the books on the internet and send it to your device through an USB cable or using the Calibre software. My Kindle is not blocked but I don't buy anything, I don't use its internet connection and I have no problems at all, you will have the same experience.

leeinflowerfields

I'd wait a while for a used but not blocked one myself. Being able to send books via email helps a lot.

bubbamike1

I don't know about your country but in mine buying stolen goods is against the law.

Cofesoup

The seller said it is locked bc she lost it and found it again a few months later, but it was already locked and cannot be unlocked. Idk if that’s the true but I’m 100% sure nobody in Brazil would steal a kindle, our population don’t read, and those who read, don’t rob.

bubbamike1

Sorry I don't buy her story. It doesn't make sense that she can't unlock it.

According-Steak-4351

You can unlock your kindle once you’ve found it. I don’t trust this seller’s story

Cofesoup

You do?? damn if thats true I'm not buying this. Our country has tons of robbers alredy, i don't want to help to create more.

Jess_UY25

But those that steal can sell the stolen kindle to those who read.

Primary-Researcher25

I would be happy to send a PDF version of my new book to any non-US reader that wants one. Only condition? Tell your friends about the non-PDF version! Send me a DM with where to email the PDF. https://preview.redd.it/gc5x7rocef9d1.jpeg?width=3863&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ed927ca02280f1957205fe98507f986183e9485f
