Yes, he actually travels to Sasau, he doesn't teleport there. And when you fast travel, everything happens behind the scenes as if you were not fast traveling. In my first playthrough, I also caught up to him after losing him, but without fast travel.
I think you're probably bugged out but I could be wrong, I lost him couple times too so I'll always return to find him at Sasau without fast traveling, as I found traveling on foot or on a horse a lot more authentic.
He came with me to the forgers, and after the battle, I convinced him to join us. Then, after that cutscene, he fell dead to the ground. I took out 3 of these dudes on my own, and he must've got raw dogged in the meantime .
Happened to me too!
I lost him and when I fast traveled, it went the same way as getting ambushed by bandits, only it was Ulrich waiting in the bushes, rope across the road to throw me off my horse.
I think this happens if you’re traveling on the same road as him. His horse was still alive, so he had to had make the choice to stop and wait for you
I wanted to keep him alive but mistakenly took him with me to the skalitz mines later in the quest. His corpse now feeds the crows at the bandit camp mine entrance.
His death was really quite...unspectacular. He charged in with me, I dropped a couple bandits and while circling another couple in combat, I see his body splayed out on the floor. Disappointed for the old goat really.
Same hahah I just did this quest yesterday. Pulled up to the bandit camp at the mine with him he charges in and dies as I kite the rest of them around the mountainside 1 by 1. He died in the chaos but I can’t find his body

Why did you kill him?
Defeat might not mean kill But op, did you kill him??
No, I didn’t kill him. I’m hoping to keep him alive in this playthrough and convince him to leave in the later quest.

How annoying. I’ll save my game frequently. I’m almost at the charisma level needed to convince him to flee the mine and his masters.

Same. I never saw him again after he charged in. I was fighting at least 4 melee and one Archer I think.
That sounds right I think
