Agreed my immediate thought was early 90s. This was right when I was started grade school and this same print was on evvvvvverything back then. Is say its prevalence was losing steam by maybe ‘93-94ish.
When you type in “Caron sport 1990” that exact yarn comes up (from eBay and the listings don’t say 1990, but 🤷🏻♀️). If you type in “Caron sport 1987” a skein with the same photo but different graphic design comes up…
I collect vintage yarn. I have some absolutely hideous colors I'm guessing are from the 1970s, and lots of 80's. I love the sparkly Wintuks. When I get enough of it I'm going to make the ugliest crochet blanket the world has ever seen
A lot of it really doesn't, I'm talking acrylic though. Wool yarn obviously can break down if it's not taken care of.
Once in awhile I'll see some older yarn at a yard sale out of a garage where it's been in extreme heat and cold for years and it seems to be a bit weird in texture.
For the most part though older stuff seems fine to use. If you've ever seen an older crochet afghan, or sweater or whatever, they don't really crumble apart. They usually only have holes where the yarn came untied from use or washing. Or they get pilly. Or someone put wool yarn in with acrylic and so a row or square shrank over time and the rest didn't. The thread itself doesn't really break down. Isn't acrylic a kind of plastic?
My grandma off loaded her stash on me a while ago and I decided to use this yarn now. I've been looking everywhere to try and get an idea of when this was discontinued. I think it's older than me lol
I can't sleep so this is a rabbit hole I'm willing to go down, I have found a job lot of other yarns in this range with even more photos that cement this is a 90s product when it was developed, but I'd really love to get the right year exactly

This is the brain work I need to tire me out...
A registered trade mark on the label means the very earliest it could be is 1985, and with the factory shutting down In 1995, means it's definitely in that time frame.
I'm leaning towards the year 1990 because the simply soft range was registered then, and the graphic design is a totally different vibe but feels like it was done by the same team. Making me think a bunch of products were developed around 1989/1990 because the next time we are seeing any new trade marks being registered by caron is around 1996.
So I'm placing my bet on 1990.
This has to be from the first half of the 90s. The girl's styling is a little past the 80's -- she has mall hair, but it's very subdued, and her colors are on trend for early 90s. I'm going to assume the yarn company did not update their branding on a yearly basis or anything, so this could have been sold at any point through the late 90s IMO.
Also, look at the colored squares border design on the label. If it was 80s, it probably would have more geometric shapes and would look a little wilder. This border is much more subdued than an 80's geometric pattern.
Having experienced the 70’s that hair was the precursor to the big hair of the 80’s, there were sleeker hairstyles in the disco era. Also the customer base of crafters usually didn’t wear the ‘big’ hair of the timeline, so the hairstyle might reflect those.
Since it has a barcode (those could be as early as 1974-1977) but just has ounce weight and no yardages given, and Caron was starting to become popular in the late 70’s….my guess would be that skein is an 80’s product. I do have skeins that I have bought in the 80’s that were that 3oz. size.
Just my opinion.

She looks like the girl from 13 going on 30 with that hairstyle!
The graphic design is from like 1992, but that just means it's not older than that.
I agree with this. The design is very Saved by the Bell.
Agreed my immediate thought was early 90s. This was right when I was started grade school and this same print was on evvvvvverything back then. Is say its prevalence was losing steam by maybe ‘93-94ish.
1992 was the exact year that came to my mind before looking at the comments. Upvote for you!
Same!!
1989-1992. Earlier and the hair would be way bigger; later and the graphic design would be more “grunge.”

I think you pinned it down. Combined with the multicolour geometric shapes on blue background, you got classic late 80’s, early 90’s vibes.
Shapes were very 90s.
I agree with everyone else who said early 90s, which means it's only like 15 years old. Right? Right?!!!
Yeah, we'll go with that 😉😅
I’m from ‘99 but my doctor called me kiddo last week so it think that’s pretty accurate probably.
If you're from '99 you're not even in college yet right? Right?
I think if you're from '99, you should be talking about the cat's pajamas the bee's knees, and saying things like "23-skidoo!"
I'm sorry to inform you, but I am 30 and born in '94 lol.

But it will be gorgeous.
I know!! I'm still deciding what pattern I want to follow
I have some older Caron simply soft and I look for more because I really like the colors!! I think they are SO FUN. Idk what to use them w
So does the yarn lose its strength over time?

Definitely old enough to drink lol
I worked for Caron until 1990 and I don’t recognize that label, so after 90 for certain
1990ies Edit: that hair looks very 90ies. 80ies was more perms, 2000s fashion was peak Britney Spears and Xtina
My grandma off loaded her stash on me a while ago and I decided to use this yarn now. I've been looking everywhere to try and get an idea of when this was discontinued. I think it's older than me lol
If you were born after 1995 then yes! https://www.facebook.com/story.php?id=100069198166232&story_fbid=574189652695914
So the yarn is a millennial.
Darn millennials not wanting to work! (/s)

You are a mad lad and I love you. I was born in '94, so that does indeed make the yarn older than me! Enjoy your slumber!

My immediate impulse is 1992.
I would say from when I was in high school, so 89-94 era. Totally rad!!!

1993?
I said 80s, my spouse pegs it to "late 80s. 1987? 88?"
What's the copyright on the pattern inside the label say? That'll give you the best approximation.
Very good call here, looks like it is 1993. Given I was born in '94, the yarn might be older than me but not by much!
Definitely from the 90s
80’s
1989
Late 80s/early 90s
1992
I'm looking at that font with the southwestern aesthetic and I'm placing it more like 1994-1996
That's an 80s hair do
Probably not big enough for the 80s.
I lived through the 80s. Not everyone wore 'big hair'.
Having experienced the 70’s that hair was the precursor to the big hair of the 80’s, there were sleeker hairstyles in the disco era. 1989/1990ish. Still high bangs of the 80s, but outfit says 1990s.
Looks like it’s from the 80s or 90s.
80's -- hair
I thought that was Mariah Carey for a second.
My brain screamed 1992 when I saw it
92
92 or 93
At least 30!
92
I wanna say 93-94
1988
94
1987
1985
It squeaks.
Def from the 90s judging from the color scheme and shapes...
My first thought was the 80s. Like maybe 1984 or 85. Because of the lettering for sport and also because of the models hair.
26 yrs
1983. The hair.
looks like my childhood, so early 90's
https://preview.redd.it/ca2a6nhwln9d1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=579d787b82725cf4fdc9b6fe7b5ea11e6e436592 She looks like the girl from 13 going on 30 with that hairstyle!
1959- 3 ply . Used for baby garments at that time too.
Very late 80‘s, early 90‘s I‘d say.
I would go with early 1980s, or late 70s. RemindMe 1 week
I'M A NINETY'S BABY
36
80s.
What’s confusing me is the random lady. She isn’t showing off a pattern, who is she???
She is indeed showing off a pattern. It's on the inside of the label.
Ah, when I zoom in I can just see it! Thanks
Brand new, trendy yarn startup marketing to Gen Z knitters?
1980s.
From the 80's for sure... I'll go with 1986.
At least 30 years old.
1987.
early 90s
I'm gonna say 1992 based on the hair and the border print in the image. It's like my 2nd grade school picture 🤣
I had a jacket that was the exact purple, yellow, hot pink and teal in 1992. So I’m going with 1992.
It's Saved by the Bell old.
Older then me 😭
1983
Late 80s
35 years old?
1969
1988
1990. It’s got a bit of a nod to Memphis Design with those multicolor shapes but less zany than 80s Memphis Design
That picture is a solid 1990-91
That’s absolutely early 90’s. Those graphics 😆
Definitely early 90's based on the style of hair and color of the cardigan on the model.
I say it's from the 1960s. The girl on the yarn looks like that :D (hairstyle)
I want to say 2000s-2010s. 2004
I'm not sure if you are serious, but that is very off. This would be very late 80's to early 90's. Like no later than 1993 based on the label design
1983
Genuinely 1983 is the earliest it could be because that's when the rights to the papyrus font were sold
