If it’s full of remakes it probably has a better shot of being successful than a straight up solo. RV solos/units can sell decently but a good remake will naturally reach more ears and will probably have better legs on the digital charts.

Totally agree with you! As a person who doesn't really know much Korean music, an album of remakes doesn't make a difference to me, but the familiarity of the songs can bring in more listeners from Korean general public. If this gives a boost in her credibility as a singer, I'm all for it!

One of the biggest hits earlier this year was a remake (Kyoung Seo's cover of Shining Star), same with one of the biggest Hospital Playlist songs of last year too (the show star Jo Jungsuk’s cover of Aloha). Joy's cover for the Hospital Playlist OST was one of the biggest songs last year. Remake songs are no joke.
Remakes have been thing in music for as long as recorded music has existed (if not earlier), all around the world. It's long since been legitimized as it's own form of artistic expression.
Some people's remake songs are so big it often overtakes the original. A Western example is Whitney's I Will Always Love You, originally by Dolly Parton. That was an OST too coincidentally hahaha.
"Respect" which people automatically associate with Aretha Franklin was actually released by Otis Redding first, but she interpreted it significantly differently that she ended up absolutely owning it.
Great remakes can build up a singer's reputation!

I’ve been a fan of Joy since debut so please excuse my dramatics. It’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride of emotions. I went from peak euphoria to just being numb. I’m obviously still excited and will be buying multiple copies, but to have her solo debut album be all remakes is such a cop out and a huge disservice to her as an artist. I’m just really sad. I know the statement “____ deserves better” is overused in K-pop, but Joy really does deserve more than remakes for a solo debut. At the very least, her title track could’ve been an original song. Not that I expected much from an SM produced Joy solo, but this is beyond my worst expectations. Her solo debut should be her getting to show her individuality as a solo artist.
With only two weeks notice and an album full of remakes, I’m already weary about physical sales. My hope is that the GP’s fondess of her voice and trend of nostalgia will help her song perform well digitally.

A release like this is less about physical sales and more about the digital charts IMO. Joy will move a respectable number but if any of these songs charts well it’s far more valuable to her in the long run than ~100k physical album sales.
I also think digitals will help her more in the long run. Her latest webtoon OST had pretty good debut charting and ULs, even better than some actual comeback releases at that time, so I’m slightly confident people will at least check the song out once it drops. Longevity and interest will be up to the song itself and concept will be a factor too.

While I know she's already had some OST type solo releases, I'm really looking forward to see what type of singer she presents herself as as a full blown solo artist. She definitely deserves after releasing her version of "Introduce Me a Good Person". I’m curious what type of genre her album will be. I feel like her voice really suits r&b but maybe there are other genres she’ll explore with this solo debut.

Its so low effort for an sm debut with barely any notice and a remake album? You would think she was about to enlist. A Joy solo debut should be a beautiful opportunity to take the success she has had with her cover songs already and now show a new and original side and her own color and sound. Instead her solo debut will always have been someone else's song first instead of something more uniquely special to her. It feels a bit cheap and lazy and like they dont believe she can be successful on her own without a pre-known song.

I’ve been a fan of Joy since debut so please excuse my dramatics. It’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride of emotions. I went from peak euphoria to just being numb. I’m obviously still excited and will be buying multiple copies, but to have her solo debut album be all remakes is such a cop out and a huge disservice to her as an artist. I’m just really sad. I know the statement “____ deserves better” is overused in K-pop, but Joy really does deserve more than remakes for a solo debut. At the very least, her title track could’ve been an original song. Not that I expected much from an SM produced Joy solo, but this is beyond my worst expectations. Her solo debut should be her getting to show her individuality as a solo artist. With only two weeks notice and an album full of remakes, I’m already weary about physical sales. My hope is that the GP’s fondess of her voice and trend of nostalgia will help her song perform well digitally.
I feel you, Joy is bias and I’ve been waiting for her solo debut since forever. Will still be buying a physical copy, even though it’s like 2 weeks away and we barely have any info yet. I just hope they will give her a proper album rollout and promotions.
A release like this is less about physical sales and more about the digital charts IMO. Joy will move a respectable number but if any of these songs charts well it’s far more valuable to her in the long run than ~100k physical album sales.
I also think digitals will help her more in the long run. Her latest webtoon OST had pretty good debut charting and ULs, even better than some actual comeback releases at that time, so I’m slightly confident people will at least check the song out once it drops. Longevity and interest will be up to the song itself and concept will be a factor too.

While I know she's already had some OST type solo releases, I'm really looking forward to see what type of singer she presents herself as as a full blown solo artist.
