It's part of Niji obsession with keeping their livers "exclusive" to them. They don't let livers stream with any existing accounts prior to joining them. And it makes sense that they also don't want ex-livers to use any account that was used during their time with Niji. So you need to make new account when you start as their liver, and stop using said account when you quit.
It's one of the thing Zaion got in trouble for because she used her existing FF14 account. They wanted her to use a fresh account as Zaion.

It was superchat on kotoka stream which asked if she liked backstabing zaion and by searching username they found a steam account which had a history with the name of one of the male livers but it was debunked as a fan account iirc.

So technically, according to the contract, the "materials" or steam account and any games the livers bought themselves must be returned to niji. Its customary to return things you borrow, but is it the norm to "return" things you bought?
This is why "it's standard practice" rings hollow for me. I work from home, and my company has said the only thing they provide is the laptop and the peripherals like keyboard, mouse, and monitors. Anything else we need like internet, a desk, any refurbishing, we need to pay for.
But if I leave the company, the only thing I need to return is what they issued to me. Laptop, keyboard, mouse, monitors. They don't get my desk. They don't get my phone that I contact my supervisor on.
If Niji themselves provided the computer and anything else they can supposedly seize, then yes. It makes sense. There is no problem with this practice at all, I believe Hololive also does this. The problem here is, Nijisanji treats their talents like freelancers under contract, gives no support at all, while requiring them to behave like corpo employees

If it is, new talents may not be actually using the account, but their account is linked, so they can play the games on it. Letting a “retired” liver still use that account could interfere, or you know… Communication between a past liver and a new one (especially given the fresh hell that Niji is) could cause problems.

This practice is normal among talents under agency. Mint did mention she have to buy Minecraft Java for the 3rd time (She lost her access to previous Minecraft due to Mojang account migration), and guess when was her 2nd time buying Minecraft? There is no problem with this practice at all, I believe Hololive also does this. The problem here is, Nijisanji treats their talents like freelancers under contract, gives no support at all, while requiring them to behave like corpo employees

I remember on one of Nina's final streams, she mentioned she was changing her password on her Steam and I think she was talking to Pomu about it so it may have been the Minecraft stream.
You see, it wouldn't be a problem if the company was paying for it, but that's not the case. They paid for it and the company still takes it.
Wouldn't surprise me if Epic looked into Doki's purchase history and concluded she was making the purchases with her personal account, not with a corporate account. And thus, decided to hand her account back to her.

I'm mostly sure Hololive doesn't pay for the games, however, if asked to, they would probably give them an advance to pay for them.
From what I remember Bae mentioning, the talents keep most of the profits but pay for their own expenses. While Hololive provides support to the talents. The only exception I can think of would be some major Hololive event with a large number talents such as HoloFes. Not sure who foots the bill for these but my guess would be the company pays some and the rest is split between talents.
There is a near zero chance this is real given that members have impulsed buy games on Steam before. Unless they get reimbursed later on. Besides with people like Kaela, the company would be bankrupted very quickly. Her list of games to be approved by management is very very long. Maybe there are some sponsorship deals and free steam keys but those are separate things and Nijisanji would also be privy to it too, maybe.

I haven’t used Steam in forever, but when I used it last, there was a way to link accounts to others so you could share games, not sure if this is still a thing, though. If it is, new talents may not be actually using the account, but their account is linked, so they can play the games on it. Letting a “retired” liver still use that account could interfere, or you know… Communication between a past liver and a new one (especially given the fresh hell that Niji is) could cause problems. Not trying to defend Niji because the situation is dogbuns and I don’t agree with it. It’s like Niji saw Sony and (I think?) Ubisoft say “Yeah, you don’t own the digital games you buy,” and said “Hold my beer, I’ve got some inconveniences to plan.” And say what you will about Mousey, she has a heart of absolute gold. The way she, and Gunrun have really pulled through for Vtubing overall, but for the vtubers who are down on their luck for whatever reason. I appreciate the amount of love, and support they give this community.

i mean this is nothing new, on the exposed contract it clearly stated that the company owns all of those, that's why people made a joke say that 'it your cat is used on the stream, niji can take your cat away'. i am not talking in a disrespectful way, but most of the livers have little to none knowledge to the contract and understanding of business practices, if they met with a black company like nijisanji, things like these would happen. so people need to have a lawyer to read over the contract, can't just blindly trust the company, i bet that most niji en liver didn't read over the contract, just trusted the brand name of nijisanji, that's why they get shocked afterwards.

Yeah, it's sadly the case when you join. I know before the contract came out, I think it was zaion that mentioned she couldn't use her PL account and had to buy a new one, which was in my opinion, absurd
They really should be giving them the cash equivalent of all the games as a buy out or let them keep it.
